Is Boot Camp a backdoor into password protected mac?

Hi!
I Have an iMac 27"  with snow leapord and windows 7 pro 64 throgh boot camp installed on it. The Mac has an administator password on it because I don't want anyone accessing that information, but the windows OS does not. If someone boots up in the windows OS, will they be able to "backdoor" past the admin password in to the mac OS?
thanks,
chris

It's not "bad guys" that have access, it's just very sensitive information and the computer has been temporarily moved to a slightly less secure location (ie: not in a locked office) I tested it out today and it seems that as I suspected the password keeps the Mac OS intact because when it exits windows, it reboots into macOS.
thanks though.

  • Convert Excel into Password Protected PDF Files

    Hello Aandi/Lenoard,
I believe you are the Adobe Forums administrators so I thought you guys are the right people to approach.
OTHERS ARE ALSO INVITED TO COMMENT ON THIS TOPIC.
I have C# desktop app which generates Excel files and our goal is to convert these excel files one at a time into password protected PDF files. We use a 3rd party software currently, but I am challenging myself into saying that I can use Adobe Acrobat 9.0 SDK to achieve what is required .
I have downloaded Acrobat 9.0 SDK and also have Adobe Professional 8.0(trail) in my development machine. Can you firstly tell me if this is possible and secondly what would be required on the client machines to run it?
    THanks,
    Andy

"Encrypt with Password" is the policy name, not the policy id.
Did you try enumerating the policy object to see how to set it up? I ran this from the console to get the policy details:
    var policy = security.chooseSecurityPolicy();
    for ( var i in policy )
    console.println(i + ": " + eval("policy." + i));
That will pop up your list of policies. Choose "Encrypt with Password" and hit Apply, which returned the following:
    policyId: SP_STD_default
    name: Encrypt with Password
description: This policy will allow you to set an open or modify password on a document.
    handler: Adobe.Standard
    target: document
Of course, all you really need are the policyId, handler and target. Make sure you read and thoroughly understand the security requirements documented in the API reference for this method as well.

Will boot camp run windows XP on a Mac book pro retina

No. The newest Mac OS X version capable of setting up Windows XP or Vista in Boot Camp is 10.6.8, which is too old for that Mac model.
You may be able to use it inside a product such as VirtualBox, Parallels Desktop, or VMware Fusion.

  • Boot camp files do not show in Mac following Windows restore

I am trying to increase the size of my boot camp partition (using Winclone to create an image).
This is my stupid messing around which created the problem:
I had previously tried changing the partition sizes, repartitioning my HD: making windows bigger (uninstall via boot camp, reformat drives, reinstall mac from time machine and windows from boot camp). This worked fine, but I stupidly tried restoring my files mannually in windows using my file backups, but this messed up the location of some of my files (e.g. creating another C folder within the boot camp (C) partition). So I started again: I had made a system image of windows using the windows backup of the partition, before I physically changed the files.
This is what I did to fix it:
I reformated my drives back to the previous size (making windows smaller, uninstall, reinstall via boot camp assistant; and mac larger) restored windows using system restore in windows. I was able to restore to the previous windows system image, and I can boot up windows using the option key at start up.
This is what I'm left with:
However now the boot camp hd icon is called 'untitled' (not boot camp), and contains no folders (disk utility says it is practically empty). I can't repartition my drives if I am unable to clone the boot camp files (e.g. using WinClone) from the mac partition.
I know the windows restore worked, because I can boot in windows, it seems my mac partition is no longer reading the boot camp side? How do I fix this? How can I find the boot camp windows partition files within my mac?
    Thanks.
I have a mid 2011 iMac with Lion OS X 10.7.2, and Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

Is there a way to do this that doesn't cost money?
What is the problem with my boot camp? Is it the mac side not reading the boot camp files?

  • BSoD after installing Boot Camp 3.0 into Win 7 Pro x64

I installed Windows 7 Professional x64 into the partition created by the Boot Camp Assistent (3.0.4), the whole windows setup worked just fine and finished as usual. Then, after the final reboot to finish the windows setup I installed the Boot Camp software and drivers from my 10.6 DVD. The setup finished and promted me to restart the system - no problems so far. But just as Windows rebooted and was about to show the desktop, it crashed with with a BSoD providing no precise imfomation as to which driver could have caused it.
I have re-installed Windows and Boot Camp about ten times now, and no matter what I tried, the result always remained the same.
I booted in Safe Mode and tried to update to Boot Camp 3.1 and 3.2, but near the end of the setup it shows that Keyagent and MacHAL could not be installed (Setup said the Updates were installed successfully though).
When I rebooted Windows normally it was still the same - BSoD just when the desktop was about to be shown.
I have absolutely no idea what causes this. The BSoD only shows a hex-code, but I wasn't able to write it down since it disappears too quick and I don't know how to 'pause' using the integrated keyboard.
    • Computer is a MBP mid '09 running 10.6.8 with all updates
    • Boot Camp version is 3.0
    • Provided drivers on the Snow Leopard DVD are for XP and Vista/Vista x64 only, but since the setup completes without any error message I assume those Vista drivers are OK
    • Windows - as stated above - is a 7 Professional x64
So, does anyone have an idea what might be the problem and/or how to solve this issue?
If any possibly useful information missing please ask and I'll add them.
    Thanks in advance

Well, at least my Windows won't boot after renaming them to *.sys.old.
But anyway, these two drivers aren't the cause, instead it's actually BootCamp.exe and/or the trackpad or keyboard drivers.
This guy had the exact same problem and the 'solution' was to disable BootCamp.exe.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/10301692#10301692
I finally managed to install all Boot Camp updates but still nothing has changed; as soon as I launch BootCamp.exe or change settings for the trackpad the system crashes.
It seems I have two options now: Use Windows without "Tap to click", "Secondary Tap" and modified keyboard settings, or find suitable trackpad/keyboard drivers.
Speaking of which, is there any chance to get Boot Camp drivers for Win 7? Maybe this would solve my problem since I only have Vista/x64 drivers which I used for Win 7.
    Thanks!

  • Logging into password protected webpage

I downloaded Safari 3.2.3 for windows to check on a new site design that I'm working on. The site is hosted on an IIS7 Windows server and is password protected.
In Safari I get the username / password box, yet no matter how many times I enter the correct credentials it just keeps saying incorrect login or password.
The IIS login works fine in Firefox and IE. I've set IIS to accept plain text as well as the standard Windows integrated authenticated, but Safari still refuses to log in.

    > How do I create a password protected webpage using
    dreamweaver 8
to suggest a method- you need to supply more info.
do you want a common user/pass for all users, all with the
    same access
    rights?
or- do you want different access rights for different groups
    of people, such
as user/moderator/admin tied into a database?
What type of server and what type of scripting can be used
Lastly- take a look in your site's hosting control panel if
    there is one.
Most hosting cp will have a set up to password protect
    directories, and
create authorized users who are allowed access.

  • Unable to install Boot Camp and Windows 8.1 on Mac Mini

    Hello,
My computer is a late 2012 mac mini with fusion drive. OS is OSX 10.9.1. Also an apple external optical drive and a Windows 8.1 full install DVD. I attempted to install Boot Camp and Windows 8.1 and failed.
I ran Boot Camp Assistant and first problem was when it rebooted the computer - I got a text message that said the OS was missing. After a while I tried holding down the Option key while rebooting, then I got several choices to boot from - I chose the windows disk, and windows installation started.
I was eventually given a list of 6 or 7 partitions to chose from, to install windows into. I  settled on the one marked BOOTCAMP. It seemed the best guess. But the installer said that it could not install on this partition. Something about the wrong format or EFI or boot partition(s)?? In fact, the installer would not let me install into any of the listed partitions.
I restarted Boot Camp and it allowed me to remove the boot camp partition and revert to OSX only. Thanks for that!
My questions: is Windows 8.1 supported with my configuration? I know the FAQ says it is not. If in fact it is, did I do something wrong?
    Thanks,
    Doug

Poking around, I found an installation manual which was downloaded to my USB drive with the boot camp windows drivers. It says that when I reached the point in the windows installer where I'm given a choice of partitions, I should choose the one marked BOOTCAMP, and format it. Which I didn't think to try before. So I tried again, using Boot Camp Assistant from the top.
Failure again. This time, when the computer rebooted, I selected the Windows icon as before, but I got a text message saying that the boot manager couldn't be found, and a dead stop.
I also found that on the option-key reboot disk selection screen, I could eject the windows install disk and reinsert it. When I did that, I got the Windows boot icon and another icon labeled EFI boot. So I also tried that icon, with the same result.
So, I'm doing exactly what I did before (I think), but now the windows installer won't start.

  • Boot Camp, Vista Ultimate x64 SP1, 2009 Mac Pro Quad 2.93, ATI 4870 HD

    Hello All,
I’ve run into a problem installing Boot Camp with Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 on my early 2009 Mac Pro Quad 2.93 with Apple’s ATI Radeon 4870 HD (the one with one DVI and one mini-display). I followed the instructions from the Boot Camp Installation and Setup Guide, and everything was going great until I hit page 12 of the Guide (Step 3). The Boot Camp drivers installed without error, and prompted me to reboot. Upon rebooting onto the newly installed Vista x64 partition, the screen went black after the chkdsk screen appeared. I can boot into Vista safe mode, but booting into Vista normally results in the black screen. On a hunch, while in safe mode, I uninstalled the ATI video drivers installed by Boot Camp. I was then able to boot Vista normally, but only with the standard VGA adapter. Then I tried installing the latest 9.4 ATI drivers from the chipset vendor, AMD, http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx. Booting normally after the ATI chipset drivers were installed left me with a mostly black screen, and a few swizzles of horizontal color, but not enough to make out any sort of image. Once again, I was able to boot normally by first booting into safe mode and then uninstalling the ATI driver, leaving me with the standard VGA driver.
The displays I have tried so far are 1) Apple Cinema HD 23”, and 2) Apple Cinema 20”. Also, I have tried all 6 permutations with the ports on the Apple version of the ATI Radeon 4870 HD with both displays (using the mini-display to DVI adapter), 2 permutations with both displays, and 4 permutations with single displays. All permutations result in the same black screen after installing Boot Camp drivers.
Am I missing something? It seems to me that there is a display driver that needs to come from Apple that will work with the Apple version of the ATI Radeon 4870 HD in Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 attached to an Apple display. I’ve installed Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 and many other operating systems in the past 27 years of working with computers, and typically with video cards I’ve had to get the drivers from the vendor that shipped the card, not the chipset vendor. Sure, occasionally the opposite is true, and I don’t mind spending a few days to figure out what works best for me as long as I believe I am making progress.
Has anyone else run into this problem with his or her early 2009 Mac Pro Quad 2.93 with Apple’s ATI Radeon 4870 HD? I’m posting this in the Boot Camp forum as I think this problem is rooted in the Boot Camp drivers, specifically for the Apple ATI Radeon 4870 HD. Please let me know if I should post elsewhere.

You are the second person I think I've seen with trouble using Mac Pro and ATI drivers (other was on Mac Pro forum).
When updating graphics, there are extra steps that insure you get the best working drivers.
I've always found Apple to be behind the curve on Windows support. Drivers that come with a card from the vendor ususally means ATI or Nvidia, and even then, you go to the web and download and install the latest tested / beta / qualified drivers. Some people try a variety of driver versions to find the one that works best.
Apple has not been updating Boot Camp drivers for Late 2008 and on Macs. Boot Camp 2.1 is now over a year old. What is on your OEM Leopard DVD is the only drivers I would use - if at all! try without is what some do, and then see if you can selectively install. Under Windows 7, I don't need or install, and now with the RC/7077 version of 7, Microsoft 'blocks' installing Apple Boot Camp drivers as known to cause problems.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Unistall the various Apple services, drivers, startup items that you can live without or until you narrow it down. iTunes 8.1+ in Windows can break and prevent ability to even use optical drives and devices for instance.
Some tips for upgrading drivers, one from eVGA forum but should translate.

  • Can't access password protected .Mac Web Gallery

Safari is my primary browser. I have been creating web galleries using iLife '08 and my .Mac account and then viewing them with Safari for the past month or so with no trouble. This weekend I tried creating a password protected web gallery and it won't load in Safari. The gear icon just spins forever and has timed out when I have left it alone long enough. My other web galleries continue to load just fine. Clicking on the link from within iPhoto for my password protected gallery doesn't work, typing the url into Safari doesn't work, going to my gallery index and clicking on the icon of the "locked" gallery doesn't work, etc. I can still view all of my other web galleries, but this one that I'm trying to protect just won't load.
This actually appears to be a Safari problem. I don't get a dialog asking for User Name and Password. The url works just fine using Firefox on my Mac, and it also works on a PC running Windows XP. When using something other than Safari, I get the prompt for User Name and Password that I would expect. Upon entering that information, everything looks normal and works just fine.
Tsk tsk Apple! Safari shouldn't be having trouble displaying protected .Mac web galleries. Sheesh!

Just wanted to let you know that I have the EXACT SAME problem, except it is affecting my password protected iWeb site and my Gallery. I can view it from Firefox, so that is the web browser I am using now. I sent a bug report to Apple, and I also send them a request for help using e-mail, but so far I have gotten no response. Hopefully someone is working on the fix?

  • I have a Mac Book Pro A1226 and I want to install Windows 7 Ultimate. I have boot camp 3.0, I have a Mac Book Pro A1226 and I want to install Windows 7 Ultimate. I have boot camp 3.0

Please help.  I have a Mac Book Pro ( late 2007- A1226)  that I want to install Windows 7 ultimate on.  I have boot camp 3.0 and I can set up the partition but when i click start installation, I get a black screen ( for a few seconds) then it goes to a grey window, which alternates between flashing the apple symbol and a circle with line through it.  It will do this for however long I let it go for.
Would it be better for me to buy parallels software than keep persisting with this avenue.

First, make sure you ONLY have the wired Apple Keyboard and wired mouse connected.
You should have BootCamp Asst. 3.3 or 3.4 now I believe is the latest version.
Do you have the W7 disk or ISO download version?
When does the flashing start, after Windows 7 sets the NTFS formating and you click to install?

  • Boot Camp, How to switch back to Mac OS X from Windows?

I successfully installed boot camp and Vista on my imac so I could watch netflix on my computer (other than that I have no use or patience for Vista or Windows). Now, I am in Windows Vista and am unable to switch back to Mac OS X. I have looked everywhere, including the Windows Help and Support and I can't see how to close Windows and get back to the good side.

Open the Control Panel, click on Startup Disk, and change the setting; this item will only appear if the Boot Camp drivers are installed. Alternatively, restart the computer with the X or Option keys held down; in the second case, select the Mac OS X system, push the button with the straight arrow, and change the startup disk from System Preferences afterwards.

  • I installed Boot Camp on Windows 7 PC (No Mac computer!)

I was trying to install drivers in order to use a Magic TrackPad that I got.  I read somewhere that I had to use/install Boot Camp on my PC.  Well, I did so... however, I have no Mac... it's a 100% Windows 7 PC.  So, I was able to install Boot Camp 3.0 and 3.1 (I think!)  When I try to boot my machine, it will NOT boot anymore.  What can I do? Could someone please help me? I noticed that the name of my main C: drive changed to "BootCamp"... it did this automatically.  I tried to fix the MBR via the Windows 7 Installation DVD, but no success. :-(  Someone, please help!
    Thank you!
    Minime is not evil anymore!

No, I cannot do a system restore as there is/was not any system restore point.  I do not care about the drivers for the Magic Trackpad anymore... I just want to get my PC back to the way it used to be... in other words, I'd like to have it boot again. I am able to 'see' the contents of the Hard Drive by means of the Windows 7 DVD; have tried to fix the MBR by doing bootsect /fixmbr and other commands, but still no success.
Is there ANY WAY to get rid of BootCamp or undo whatever Boot Camp has done to my HD by means of a Linux CD or Windows 7 Installation CD or anything else? Is the MBR what has been changed? Any GOOD ideas or suggestions will be welcome.  Please, forget about the Magic Trackpad... I just want to get Windows 7 to boot again.
    Thanks.

  • Boot Camp won't install on my mac

Now I understand, Go to Applications, Utilities, Boot Camp. So I try and run boot camp assistant, Click I have the installation cd and hit continue. Then I go to the WIndow where it shows me how much Space you want for windows. And I click around 60 gigs. I hit Partition.Status: Partitioning Disc. BOOT CAMP ASSISTANT: THE DISC CANNOT BE PARTITIONED BECAUSE SOME FILES CANNOT BE REMOVED: Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again.SO I go to disk utilitiy and click on my HD, Click on Partition. Format is MAC OS Extended ( Journaled ) Size 249 GB.  Now I am trying to partition the disc in disc utility under my Hard drive, Partition, Click how much room I want but still get an error:PARTITION FAILED. COULD NOT MODIFY PARTITION MAP BECAUSE FILE SYSTEM VERIFICATION FAILED...What am I doing wrong here? I Verified disk permissions and it went fine..but still I cant get boot camp to instal

BAD message. common also. Misleading definitely.
    Zap PRAM
    Repair Permissions
    Verify the drive
    Safe Boot
    Try again.
If that does not work boot in safe mode or DVD and then shrink the parittion by 70GB.
Then take it back to full length.
That should fix or get around it.
Otherwise if those do not THEN you need to take your backup and boot from another device, erase and restore.
I prefer Carbon Copy Cloner instead of TimeMachine.
