Is BT Infinity ready for the masses?

Just have a look at this speed test results, we have a system set-up to run a speed test on the line every morning at 06:00, this then logs with speedtest.net and here's the results.
I just cannot believe just how unsable the internet connection has become since upgrading to the 80/20 package!

I never trust Speedtest, my figures have always been all over the place with that site and never consistent from one minute to the next.
I find  this site http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/ to be more in line whith what I would expect from my line.
But the ultimate test is always a realtime download of a file.
I'm not a fan of constantly logging your speedtests and checking them over time, what are you hoping to achieve, either your infinity is working real time, streaming iPlayer playing Xbox etc, or it's not.
If you have a problem you'll soon know by someone saying they have lag playing Xbox, or their film is buffering on netflix. I would say that most would not even need the 76Mbps their profile quotes.

  • Choosing proper CoDecs for the masses?

Here is a website that serves up QT movies of a specific person's commercial film work: http://www.sprocketfuel.com/2007/reel.html
For some reason, the Fast Start QT movies created for this site are not working very smoothly... it almost seems that the computer will play the beginning of the QT movie, and then catch up to the download, and re-set, only to begin playing from the beginning again.
These movies are only :30-:60 seconds in length, and only 4Meg to 8Meg in size... it doesn't seem like they should be so troubled!
They were exported as Fast Start movies from QT Pro 6, using Sorensen 3, High (not Best) Quality and 22K stereo audio.
In the past, we have had pretty good luck with that, but now they seem to be acting quirky.
Should I choose a different codec? Make them even smaller? What is a good rule of thumb to make them play smoothly for the masses?

    Hmmm...
I don't know if I just answered my own question, but I went ahead and did the JavaScript updates for the Windows IE fix... and it seems to have improved things dramatically. Who'da thunk it? I only use FireFox, so I didn't think that would affect my experience, nor could I understand why the JS fix would help either... but something triggered and it works a lot better for me now.
Any webmeisters that haven't yet changed their OBJECT and EMBED coding, I highly advise that you do! Very weird, but it seems to work well.
I was sure my problems were from odd codecs, slow servers, or funky computers... but it seems to have been a Microsoft "update" that killed the established way of doing things.

  • Linux is not ready for the desktop - Mandriva devs

I just read this in the latest DistroWatch Weekly:
You wouldn't expect something like this to happen at any time, let alone on the eve of Mandriva Linux 2007 release. Last week, two Mandriva developers went on record saying that "Linux is not ready for the desktop". In a web log post entitled Why I'll never use Linux for my main desktop, Vincent Danen concluded: "This kind of thing is precisely why, for me, Linux belongs on the server. Now if those kernel-developing idiots would get their act together and give us a 2.6 kernel that was a) stable and b) supported for more than a week, then I'd really be pleased." Another Mandriva developer, Fabrice Facorat, agreed. In a post called Linux ready for Desktop? Of course not!, he had this to say: "For me when you have control over the environment and the hardware, Linux is ready: think servers, workstations, thin clients, kiosks. However when you have no control on the hardware, Linux is not ready because it somewhat lacks flexibility."
There you have it, right from the horse's mouth! From two guys who have been working for a Linux company, developing a popular desktop Linux distribution, for years! Yes, that's right, Mandriva Linux is not ready for your desktop! Don't waste your money buying it!
One really has to wonder about the future of a company which happily asks Gaël Duval to leave, yet is quite pleased to keep developers who publicly hint that they consider Linus Torvalds, Alan Cox and other kernel developers "idiots"! A perfect pre-release PR, non?
No comments... I just cannot find any words.    :?

ughhhh. Mandrake have always sucked at marketing, they do themselves no favours. IMHO, they're becoming more and more irrelevant with each release. Once upon a time I might have reccomended mandrake to a newbie, but certainly not now. They've got great assets and a good base. The *potential* to become a good distro. But each release, stupid bugs make it through, and the improvements seem negligable.
Once of their better features is their huge repository of packages -- which is horrendously poorly advertised. You'll find nowhere in the GUI's or desktop a place to access their 'contrib' repo which is the equivalent of our extra, and contains a huge amount of packages. Also an important point for mandriva has been mandrakeusers.org/mandrivausers.org, which has been a huge community offering great support for newbies to mandrake, rather than directing them into the expensive mess that is known as the mandriva club. Mandriva have totally ignored this resource, and have made no attempt to support this board, upon which you'll find, I have quite a reasonable post count from back in my early days of Linux (mandriva 8.2 was first distro), and continuing on to now. It also exemplifies their (lack of) decent customer support.
The distro has had countless irritating bugs which pervaded through releases, and all sorts of utterly stupid ones that should never have made it through the testing process. They do little to help themselves with this. I've reported countless bugs, and all of them have been ignored for months. On their last release, they included the old rt2500 module, which at the time, hard locked SMP machines, and made my mandriva unbootable as it was loaded on boot. I filed a bug, marked it as high priority and it was utterly ignored for more than 6 months, so much so I had forgotten about it. Other bugs and emails have suffered a similar fate.
It's GUI tools, have become a complete mess, for example wireless, in 2006 release, was absolutely horrendous to configure, and had no support for WPA -- wpa_supplicant wasnt even on the CD's so people could configure it manually.
It's good to see they're finally ditching their old desktop theme, which they dragged on for far too long. It's always been absolutely hideous.
Their business model emphasises the 'club' far too much, making it difficult to even find a download on their site for the standard version, which has "Free" tacked all over it, as if to try and make you feel like a cheapskate. Doesnt help how they change their release cycle frequently either.
The stupidity of Mandriva just confounds me. PR like this does nothing to help them. They criticise the developers for not providing a 2.6 kernel that is stable. Maybe mandriva should look in their own backyard, and offer a distro that's remotely stable. Last time I used it, it had a horrendously old udev, hotplug, and a very slow hardware detection system. It still used bootsplash, which has been unmaintained for over two years, and included supermount, which Con Kolivas has disowned and again, has abandoned for years. They're hardly doing themselves favours patching their kernels with this out of date crap. Nor do they update them, I dont see mandriva offering updates to newer ones, which would no doubt fix many of the reported issues.
Alternatively they could do what other distros do and pitch in and help. Many of the kernel developers are also employees of other vendors, or have an important part in other distros, such as Daniel Drake and Robert Love. It'd be great for mandrake if they employed a kernel developer, because it's clear THEY are the ones who are the idiots.
I have no idea how they made it out of their bankrupcy, with the lacklustre state of their miserable distro, I think their days are numbered, unless they do something to change around their image and fix their product.
    ok, im done.

  • Ready for the enterprise?

Forgive the newbie question, but I'm looking for testimonials for/against using htmldb to create enterprise scale applications. With most enterprise apps, the bulk of the work is in interfacing to existing infrastructure. Very little data is human generated - most comes from other processes and systems.
Now, I recognize that no development system is going to cover all the issues listed. I'm just trying to see how many are covered by htmldb.
    My questions include:
-Are there mechanisms for SQL access by htmldb apps to tables/views in other databases and allowing other applications SQL access to htmldb's tables/views?
-What is the integration with Oracle's single-sign-on (SSO) infrastructure for credentials?
-Are there automated import mechanisms to get data into htmldb? For example, we have one business process that has 10,000 small files in a linux filesystem that we would like to import into tables. A manual process for this is impractical. Is there an API for import?
-Is there an ability to create a secure shell (ssh) session on an external computer, issue commands to the shell, and parse the results?
-Is there a signaling mechanism so that an htmldb app knows that another external process has finished and data is ready for import? Likewise a way for an htmldb app to send a signal to an external process?
-Is there a way to schedule periodic jobs, log cleanup for example?
-Is there a way to pass a data file to an external application and display a graphical result from that external app? Think of a statistics package like SAS, where we want to send it business data and display the .jpg or .png graphical results in our htmldb app.
    Thanks,
    Bret

    Hey there...
I think part (if not all) of your question can be answered by abstracting it a level. Think of all the tools that are available through PL/SQL or JAVA in the database. For instance...
    * Heterogeneous Services that allow you to access any ODBC/JDBC data source directly from within the Oracle database.
    * DBMS_JOB that allows the scheduling of jobs to run at a given time/interval.
    * DMBS_FILE_UTL that allows Oracle to interact with the file system.
That doesn't even take into account the things you can do with Java in the database.
In short, just about everything you mentioned can be done in one shape or form with tools that reside in or around the oracle database.
HTMLDB is a front end interface tool that has access to all of the tools available to you at database level.
So in short (and in my opinion): Yes, it is capable of creating Enterprise level applications. I'm building a fairly complex one right now that interfaces with 2 external (non-oracle) databases via Heterogeneous services, and which used DBMS_JOB to schedule jobs to collate data from an external file system.
    I hope this helps..

  • User roles were deleted for the mass change in CUA system.

    Dear Team,
I have assigned a role to a set of users in CUA via SU10 to a specific child system, as like I have executed the task 3 to 4 times for the assignment of the different roles to a set of users and some users may repeated in each execution .
And when I check in child system after few hours the old roles were deleted and contains the role which I have assigned in the mass change.
It was happened only to few users not more than 20 users, then I expected that may be the users who get repeated in SU10 more than one time for the different role assignment it get impacted.
But that is not a problem, because I verified some of the users who repeated more than one time in child system and they didnu2019t get deleted  the old roles and it was appended with the new role to the existing rights of the user.
Still some of the IDOC were showing in SCUL transaction with Yellow signal triangle shape
So please help me out what would be the issue.
Kindly let me know if need more information....
    SV

    Hi,
It is a problem related to IDOC issue. Please contact Basis Team regarding pushing of the Idocs. I am giving an over view of the steps that needs to be executed for idoc push. Please contact Basis with the same.
    Run RBDAGAIN report (se38)
Give Idocs and save as variant.
Now go to sm36 specify a job name and start.
This will change the Idoc status from 02 to 30. For 03 to 30 it needs a different report. Please check and let me know if any issue. As long as idocs are not pushed properly it will give an error. At times also check the CUA user is ok or not. It gets locked at times. To know which one is the CUA user->Login to child system->su01->See the change executed by the user->Get the user name.
Let me know if any issue.
    Regards
    Aveek.

  • Is JDeveloper production ready for the mac?

    Hi
I have a macbook pro (dual core, 4 gb of ram, OS 10.6.3), and I am trying to start developing webcenter applications in JDeveloper. I am using version 11.1.1.3.0, with the webcenter extension installed, but I cannot really work with this.
    Problems include:
Crashes (several this morning), being very slow, taking ages to deploy even the simplest applications, huge CPU and memory usage (100% and >1000MB) and a lot of errors with the weblogic server, including an unreachable console and taking forever to load a simple application.
I have followed the official installation procedures (including defaulting to Java 6, making a symbolic link to classes.jar).
In its current state I cannot use JDeveloper for any real work. So my questions are:
Is JDeveloper considered usable for production on the Mac, and does anybody have any useful tips to improve?

    Hi Jesse,
I have been using 11.1.1.2.0 for a few months now, so the following comments apply to that release.
Everyday I use jdev and adf on my macbook pro. I also have a PC set up with the environment so I can compare. It crashes a little more often on my mac, but the difference is not catastrophic as if you are used to work with adf/jdev, your used to a few crashes here and there.
Here is a post I followed to install the environment http://jipp-jipp.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2009-11-18T12%3A35%3A00-08%3A00 which is mainly a reference to a post from Andrejus http://andrejusb.blogspot.com/2008/10/jdeveloper-11g-production-on-mac-os.html
For the memory usage it is normal for jdev to use more than 1GB gb, and from my experience it keeps on requisitioning more as time go by so I restart jdev a few times a day.
    Good luck

  • 3 weeks into learning Oracle, and I think I am ready for the next step.

    Hi all,
I am in need of some suggestions. I have been learning oracle for almost 4 weeks now, and I need to design a database with some real world functionality. I want it to be fairly difficult so that I am able to learn things by being "thrown to the wolves" so to speak. I will be designing it from scratch basically: requirements gathering, ERD and Normalization, Table creation, and then implementing functionality in increments. I know that is a lot on my plate, but I'm sure I can do it with the amount of resources and documentation there is available.
First things first, I will be using Oracle 10g XE as the database software. I am trying to determine what kind of database I want to design though. I really would like to stay away from the traditional/generic databases, if you know what I mean. Or if it is one of the popular starter DBs, then something with a twist maybe. Here is one of the things I have thought about, hopefully some of you guys that respond can shoot some more ideas at me:
Corporate Inventory database for a company that does a lot of field service work with local parts, but would sometimes require parts to be shipped from other locs:
DB would track inventory for all offices throughout company.
Basic users could only view inventory for each office.
Mid-level users could add/remove items at their local office, and request items to be shipped from other offices.
Management-users could add/remove items, request items, and would be able to approve any pending inventory transfers.
DBA - The administrator, can add new users, remove users, and all the other power that comes with being a DBA.
Does something like this seem like a good project? I would be able to address concurrency, error handling (with codes), multiple user types, etc.
Can somebody suggest a front-end for this?
I was thinking to maybe make a JSP/JSF web based service (to be run locally at first) for all of the forms and such and then use the Oracle XE for the back-end. Does anybody think there is something more suitable?
Also, if anybody can think of another DB system to design that may be better to learn from or more interesting, please suggest it.
Best regards to all those positive community members,
    Jason

I would like to take this project slow, I mean I do not plan on having this be a working application in 2 weeks. I would like to slowly develop it and move on to each step after the previous step is understood.
Such as, first start by understanding what tables and keys I will be needing in order to have a database which tracks inventory. Then create users that only have certain privileges. Then start to slowly create the functions/procedures and triggers that will be used to perform certain transactions on the database, starting with the most simple ones first. Finally decide on a front-end that will be best for allowing users to perform transactions in a friendly interface.
By no means do I think this is simple, but I do believe if I approach it correctly I can learn a lot. I was basically just hoping the experienced users in this community could help me understand the best approach and some basic ideas I may need to understand about developing a project like this.

How many iphones do you think they will have for the verizon customers on the 3rd and how many do you think apple and verizon will have for everyone else on the 10th?
Im guessing a million pre orders and two million for everyone else.
Im basing this on the sales numbers to date of the att iphone 4.
600k pre ordered on att and 1.5 million got one the weekend it was released.
    hmmmm
I hope they have a LOT for the signs of high demand

  • Question for the masses regarding hard of hearing

    All,
I have a new employee who is partially deaf. This user requires a telephone on my CUCM/IPCC system to take calls for our servicedesk. Here is my challenge that I was hoping some of you might have already faced and solved and be able to give me some advice. The employee who is partially deaf has a hearing aid that has bluetooth capability. A headset is not an option as the hearing aid has feedback if it is covered up with a headset.
Per some of my research - the only phones I have found that are offered from Cisco that support bluetooth are for the 500 series small business system and then the 7925 series wireless phones. Both are not options for me here. Are any of you aware of headset devices that have bluetooth capability that would work with a Cisco 794X phone and that would pair with a bluetooth hearing aid?
I welcome any insight or input you might have.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
The Cisco 9951 and 9971 IP phones support Bluetooth for headset connections and so may be an option if you are running a version of CUCM that supports them.

  • Standardization for the masses

been trying to be patient, and read the manual, and learn this new take on Logic...
ATM just messing around with some of the channel strip presets, and all I need to say is 'man somebody spent alot of time on this...' but really, I am not hearing anything I can use. At the end of the day nobody in their right mind is going to use these kinds of preset. And I can tell they really spent alot of time on this... instead of, well you name it. I think someone was way off target allocating resources for all of this preset and library BS. Like yeah, I am really going to use the 'Goa Remix' for my Goa /psy track. Its WAY off base... and don't even get me started on the Euro Dance Remix preset...
***!!! is this MacLogic or what...? I hope someone smart is reading this so they can quickly change course on the development direction. Alternatively, why couldn't it have been Cubase that was chosen by Apple for this... MAN!
<its not all that bad, but when you see the corners that were cut, why spend time on this BS..... >

    jord wrote:
Don't agree at all. Some other person may find it's just what they needed, or is a good base for getting what they need. As for the no lo-cut, it all depends on the genre you're looking at. Some genres boost the lows. Again, sounds rather myopic.
Goa being a dance music genre you would cut the lows. it has to be correct in the context of the genre to be applicable. just illustrates that anyone in their right mind who may attempt to use the preset is going to laugh the minute they see it
And I totally disagree with you on what the best EQ preset is... there is no best EQ preset and anyone relying solely on presets is not only not using their ears, but they will hit the imagination wall rather quickly.
my point exactly - the best EQ preset is no preset. I think perhaps we concur on this, no?
anyway to state it clearly, I would have liked better audio processing (why not build Soundtrack Pro's functionality into the audio editor?), offline processing of effects to audio a la Cubase's function, editors integrated into the arrange so that you can zoom in an edit the material in the arrange as opposed to having to go into an editor, and not removing external sync to midi clock, and the double click on the track to open the evironment/mixer, grabbing/cutting/pasting of audio in the arrange without the need to cut a region
no, the presets I dont need. maybe for the beginnners a few good strategic ones, but why so many that are questionable? Euro Dance Remix? Paris House Remix c'mon man? I think I may be the one who needs the anti-troll wizard about now....

  • An invitation to help with a JDev ADF Methodology "for the masses" at OOW08

You can easily tell when a tool has matured to being a productive environment. Software developers move from playing and learning features, to supporting production systems and discussing best practices and development methodologies to ensure the success of their next project.
Oracle Technology Network is happy to announce that Oracle Fusion Middleware ACEs and ACE Directors will be gathering at the Oracle Open World 08 Unconference to discuss just this, to start collaborating on producing an ADF Methodology for JDeveloper. The goal to produce Oracle Wiki pages capturing the ACEs' discussions, their thoughts, their experiences in what needs to be done for a successful ADF project.
Please join them to share your experiences and concerns in what should be outlined in such an ADF methodology. More information will be posted on this Oracle Wiki page. Please ensure to check back regularly for updates.
    (apologies for the cross post)

And in the last week we've talked about the orchestration of application workspaces with a view to 11g's Task Flow feature. If you're not participating, you're missing out on some great discussions on how to put together your JDev applications.

I have a VI where I need to time the value of a boolean which I use a tick counter in ms which is fine.  So when the value is 'true', the timer starts and when the value is 'false' the timer stops and using an indicator I can see in (ms) the duration which the boolean was true.  not a problem (see attached).
But what I need is that duration time to be recorded to file, txt doc or what ever/spreadsheet not fussed at the min.  but it needs to be stored!
Once it has successfully stored the time, I want the timer to reset to 0 ready to time the next value and recored it, but not write over the previuosly stored time.

That's why you subtract the curent from the previous.  That will give you the duration you are looking for.  It is accurate to the ms.  So if that is all the resolution you need, it works wonderfully.  If you need more accurate, then use the High Resolution Relative Seconds instead.  If your time length is more than seconds, then start looking at using the system timestamp.

Latest update says it won't run on my Mac (see question above) and current latest compatible version (3.6.17) will have full tech support for only a limited time now. Is there anything I can do to bring my Mac up to spec. Is it really a dinosaur already? Will I be able to run FF4.0 (or later) at a later dater date?

  • Ready for the knackers yard?

My old faithful iMac is suddenly crawling along at 1/100 th normal speed. No new software or anything obvious to me. So I
tried to run first aid on disk utility-this wouldn't run (I run this regularly)
tired disk utility on restore disk-wouldn't run
ran an old hardware test that happened to be hanging aroung (iMac 1.2) all OK
booted up in 9.2 to run first aid there, didn't work, got "unable to read from disk"
I then couldn't find 10.4 to reboot from so I used install disk
Do I run fsck from single user or is this just for start up problems?
Do I rebuild using Disk Warrior? I have DW 2.1, is this still good?
    Any other suggestions or comments?
    Thanks in advance people!

    Martin,
According to Alsoft: In order to run DiskWarrior while started from Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) you will need to use DiskWarrior version 3.0.3. Earlier versions of DiskWarrior, while not compatible with Tiger, will not harm your disk. Attempting to rebuild a disk with DiskWarrior 3.0.2 or earlier, while started from Tiger, will result in an error stating that a "Mac OS Services" failure occurred.
Attempting to rebuild a Tiger disk while started from a DiskWarrior 3.0.2 CD can also result in an error message stating that "This disk appears to have a newer version of the Mac OS disk format than this version of DiskWarrior." When started from earlier versions of the DiskWarrior CD, DiskWarrior may simply indicate that the disk cannot be repaired. In all cases, DiskWarrior 3.0.2 and earlier, will not harm your disk.I would suggest that you update your version of DiskWarrior before throwing in the towel on a Diskwarrior repair.
    Cheers
