Default fan controller, or one of the many daemons for the task?
Hi folks,
I have recently undervolted my laptop using the instructions in the PHC Archwiki and it is running nice and stable. I was thinking about looking at the fan speeds to further increase the efficiency of my system the system and reduce noise. I am using an Acer Aspire 5920G.
What I am looking for is more adaptive fan settings that are more in tune with the temps of the system, while keeping the fan noise to a minimum. My fans currently come in settings that seem to be 'off', 'low' and 'full', when what I really need are more adaptive speeds, i.e. more steps. Is one of the fan control daemons a better option for my needs, or is my system firmware usually the best choice. Does anyone have any comment on laptop fan scaling?

I have the acpi-cpufreq module running which I configure through the power management setting in KDE. As I'm sure you know, it works the same way as the various cpufreq modules, but can powernowd be used to control the CPU frequency using the built in KDE tool? I always used to use powernowd when I was running Gnome, but only recently made the switch over to KDE 4.4.
As for the fan speed. My laptop fan runs well enough and there is not really an issue with the fan per se because the laptop is pretty decent. My issue is really that the CPU temps seem to fluctuate. The fan seems right when under very low load (off) and when under very high load (full), it is in between where I have the issue. It seems to stay too low for too long, then jumps to full pelt when doing CPU intensive tasks, if there were more speed increments in between, this would resulting in an overall reduction in heat and noise. What I am really asking is, does the fan speed daemon provide this?

One of the many, "Can't Send" using Mail
Have been a Windows user for 15 years and made the switch to Mac. Everything has been good except using Mail, which has been a horrible experience, 4 hours worth. I configured Mail as my email provider (Go Daddy) advised but did not work. Using authentication for SMTP, and one of three ports (80, 110, and 3535). ISP is Comcast. Have also configured Mail using Comcast configuration. Any help is appreciated. Thanks,

You should be able to send via smtp.comcast.net:"your username" - in advanced set use SSL and your username and password
This will only work when you are on your Comcast connection

After recent update, cannot find my ringtones. Tried syncing and they don't come back. Only 1 list in the contacts to be selected. Tried to sync the ringtones by themselves and it still won't sync them back to the phone.
These are iTune purchased ringtones.

The mystery of the double headers : one overtakes the other and i dont have two headers in my code
This is a total mystery to me and I have tried to resolve the issue for ages and I don't undestand what is going on!
When I look at my website www.genevievegilbert.com, the top of the browser window from my index page shows me the title 'ARTISTE DES NOUVEAUX...'etc.
When you look at the source code from the browser, the page shows ONE title, which is 'ARTISTE DES NOUVEAU...'etc
When I download that original file from the server itself (index.htm) and open the page in Dreamweaver, it shows me a normal header with the title that I want there, named above.
On my website I have a few links such as 'News'. When you clic on 'News', the top of the browser window from the 'news' page shows me the title

Now, this is the title of my corporate website, which I DONT WANT to appear in my creative practice website.
I have no idea why is is part of the title of the other pages in my artist's site. The reason it is a mystery that this title appears there is that when I download to my desktop the actual page (news.htm), IT DOES NOT SHOW TWO TITLES in its header, just one! I open the file in Dreamweaver and the code is written normally, with one title in the header, which contains 'ARTISTE DES NOUVEAU...'etc (which is the title i want on all of this site's pages)
How come does the one on my server displays TWO titles in its sources code then? What is going on? This is SO strange.
The first of the two titles in the header TAKES OVER the second one and it is this one that display when anyone visits the site.
I tested it on explorer, Opera, Safari and Firefox: all the same.
I have created this site with templates and I gave up on using the template system when updating my pages as I don't quite fully understand the power of this system. Would that possibly have to do with my problem? How can I solve that problem?
I am applying for grants and I can't have my creative website talking about me wanting to do business! HELP!

Hello,
I want my visitors to be able to see the full directory they are in, in the address bar like, ie; http://microsoft.com/whatever/faq.html
(for example)
As it is currently, they see http://microsoft.com (for example) no matter where they go on my site, it never changes. I can type out http://microsoft.com/whatever/ in the adress bar and it will then display that page and show http://microsoft.com/whatever/ at the top, but once i click on anything to go to another page on my site, it doesn't change to show the new directory , I want it to change as people move thru my site. Seems almost like a URL cloaking feature is turned on, like the ones offered on other domain hosts.
IS this even the right section of the forumn to post this message? Figured it must be "domain name" related.
is this some feature not offered by powweb?
Or is there some simple button to hit in the OPS console?
(btw- i only have one domain name. And my site is all hosted on powweb)

having the address not change is most often due to frames ... if you want it to change just get rid of the frames and you should be fine.

Yes, its must be frames that you are using, because my addresses are not 'cloaked' as you described, but rather it shows the current location of each page I go to.

Business Rules Only Visible in One of the Two Planning Webs
Hi all.
I have this issue with a classic Planning application deployed to run with the calculation module to Business Rules in v11.1.2.1. I have also load balanced EAS/APS and Planning servers but when I log into Hyperion Planning in one of the server and I check the available BR I can see them but if I go into the other Planning web I cannot. This is logging straight into the Planning Webs using the different servers names. Inside EAS I have done the necessary location, provisioning and cluster to be able to appear in both Planning webs but still not working.
Does anyone knows how to fix this problem?

I have 3 older ext. hard drives that I've utilized many times. Today while searching for old files, one of the three is no longer recognized by my PowerMac. The drive is not listed in Disk Utility. Any suggestions?
Is the computer in you equipment line:
Dual Core Intel Xenon
(which is not a PowerMac but a Mac Pro) the one you are asking about, or do you have an older PowerMac?

and, as Mac Pros have a totally different architecture from the pre-2005 Macs this forum covers, you may not have the same issues that can affect the older models. If someone didn't notice your equipment line, you could get advice that doesn't apply.
If you really have a pre-2005 PowerMac, read on.
If the stubborn external is USB and does not have its own power brick (i.e., it gets power only from the computer's UBS ports--"bus powered"), it may not be getting enough power. As electric motors age, they can demand more power than when new, and the power available on any USB port is limited.
The typical workabouts to making a computer recognize an aging, bus-powered USB drive are:
Get a powered USB hub (has its own power brick
Get a "Y" USB cable: 1 Meter USB 2.0 A to 5 Pin Mini B Cable - Auxiliary USB "Y" Power Design for external hard drives.
The second gets power from two USB ports on the computer and often that's enough.
Remember that the USB ports on your keyboard seldom provide enough power even for a thumb drive, so be sure to use the USB ports on the back of the computer. -
I use more than one computer to access my four business email accounts. When one computer is on (and mail is open) emails do not get through to the other computers. This is fine, but how do I make one of the other computers the dominant one?
I assume these are POP accounts and all computers are set to remove from Server after downloading.
So on the non dominant ones... Mail Preferences>Accounts, highlight an account, Advanced tab, uncheck remove from Server, just have the main dominant one remove from server.
Or get/setup IMAP accounts. -

You are asking several different questions. If you need to store your photos, music, and movies on an external volume, you certainly can. Any externally connected hard disk drive will work, connected either directly to your Mac or to your Time Capsule as a shared volume.
You should not rely upon using that as a backup device though. Although you certainly may use it for both purposes, it is a better idea to have dedicated backup devices for a variety of reasons not limited to redundancy. You would not want to simultaneously lose all your pictures as well as your backup. If they are all on the same device, that could happen. Furthermore, a backup cannot back up the volume on which it is running.
As for adding an Extreme or Express, using its LAN port for your iMac, and then enable Internet sharing so you can effectively use the iMac as a "hotspot", you can do that too, but I am unclear on what benefit you believe this arrangement would convey for you.
An Extreme's Guest network is separate from its Main network; that is the reason for having it. -
I have been trying to get my iPhone to sync with a new computer. As a result I have ended up with many of my apps on the old computer, but missing from the the new one and the iPhone. How do I get the apps on the old one to the iPhone and then the new computer?
You don't. Backup your itunes library on the old computer and move it to the new computer.

I have a library of nearly 2000 songs and all of which were purchased/downloaded in their entirety. It seems that after one of the iTunes updates… many (not all, but plenty) of those songs were “cut off” after playing about 2/3 through them… I haven’t gone through the entire library to see which are complete and which were cut off, but hoped this is “known problem” and hopefully with a known “fix”… Make sense?
