Is Captivate Right for Me?

Can anyone lend me their expertise?
I have just been brought on to help with company marketing. No background in marketing, just creative and good with computers. And at a small company, you work with what you got.
I need to take a class on one of the Adobe products so I can help develop a looping presentation that will be displayed at our booth at an upcoming trade show/conference and may one day be uploaded onto our website. Basically, I will be taking a power point presentation and enriching it with videos, animation, voice overs, etc. Generally classing it up. A lot.
I don't have any coding experience. I am good with computers and a fast learner, but only have 6 months to pull this off.
Someone recommended Captivate? Sounds legit but all the information about it keeps saying it is for eLearning...?
I just need to pull together a professional, dynamic, multimedia presentation from an existing power point. Any thoughts?

Hello,
Sorry, this is not a typical Adobe language. Adobe Presenter, when installed, shows up in the Powerpoint menu, that is what I mean by a plug-in. It is not an independent application if that is the right terminology (I'm not a native English speaker). But you can add audio, video, animations, add a Table of Contents and arrange for publishing. You do publish normally to a zipped file that uses the Flash player to be distributed.
An assessment is sort of a test to check if the user has understood the training. It can be scored and eventually report to a Learning Managment system or a webserver. In Captivate this can be done by an assessment simulation (for p.e. software training) eventually in combination with Quiz slides. You can add Quiz slides in Presenter too.
Soft skills is the term used to describe skills that are not purely technical: examples are the human skills needed for a helpdesk, for the reception desk, for safety attitudes etc.

  • Is Captivate right for this project?

I am quite familiar with PS, AI, DW, etc., but learned about Captivate today while doing research on presentation authoring software for an upcoming project at work.
I am hoping someone here can tell me whether or not Captivate is a good fit for the project.
We are re-doing a training program.  It is a very simple software training program.  It is a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM.  It has an auto-start/run feature so that it starts up and opens to the main menu upon insertion into a computer.  There is a dvd-like menu so that the student can skip around to different sections on the disc.  Once a selection is made, a QuickTime video (we don't insist on using QuickTime, in fact some of our students have trouble installing it on their cpu's) plays.  The video is surrounded by a frame that includes playback controls (fast-forward, rewind, pause, etc), the company logo, the currenly playing section number and disc, and Menu, Previous, and Next buttons.  The videos in the past have been nothing but screen captures with voice overs, but we would like to incorporate PowerPoint-ish slides into the videos if it can be done without having to pay someone to edit the video, as that's not in the budget for this product.
The contractor that did the last one for us is a great trainer, but produced a lower-quality product than we like.  I suspect he used a free or very cheap program.
Your thoughts?  Does this seems like a project for Captivate?
    Bryan

    Hi Bryan,
It sounds like this can be achieved in Captivate. Can I ask which version of Captivate you are using?
Captivate allows you to insert FLV videos (or AVI) so you could definetly do the video part without too much trouble. The menu can also be developed in Captivate and it's also possible to publish the entire project to a CD/DVD.
You wouldn't be able to add Powerpoint slides into the videos by using Captivate so you would need to find some form of videoediting program instead.

  • Is Captivate / E-learning suite right for my needs?

Is Captivate / E-learning suite right for my needs?
Having been on hold for over 90 minutes to Adobe yesterday, and searching Adobe.com and You tube for info I am throwing my request for information at your collective feet.
The organisation I work for needs to deliver some e-learning modules, these are informing on non-software based actions and information.
We have had modules professionally designed for us in the past (almost certainly in DW or flash) – the number that we need for the next 12 months has grown, although each individual module is smaller – so professional design is less attractive due to minimum costs per module.
Content at the moment is delivered as a page or frame of text, with still pictures, video, and audio content. Roll over information, and links through to supporting documents and web sites. The user then clicks on through the pages as they demand. Finishing with a quiz and a certificate of pass mark.
The core of any information I have found about Captivate 4 represents it primarily as screen recorder. I need to build a module outside of screen recordings.
Is captivate the product to do what I need?
I can’t find any in-depth information beyond “it’s a great screen recorder and software demo tool”.
There doesn’t seem to be any supporting documents, books, videos that could be used as a platform for training users how to work with Captivate 4 – and I can find no face to face trainers in Australia.
If anyone to shed some light on what captivate is capable of doing beyond screen recording, and if there is any training available online / from books / or face to face in Australia I would be very happy to hear from them.
The available delivery formats that Captivate can output would be very helpful too – as a government organisation we have a limited amount of software / updates we must work with.
    Many Thanks
    Gav

    Hi there
Iconlogic is one of many companies providing Adobe Certified Captivate instruction. Many companies are using the curriculum they wrote. Note that their curriculum is designed for two uses. Learn it on your own with no instructor present and as a companion for an Instructor Led class.

  • Captivate 6 for Mac too buggy for use (screen corruption, mouse/audio instability)

Corrupt Screens. The main problem is corrupt screens (visually jumbled, with elements of previous screens). The corrupt screens appear in both Preview in a Web Browser and in a published project. I've observed the problem when I capture website interactions (using either Safari or Firefox). It might be isolated to web browsers and not other applications, but I'm not sure. The project slides themselves look fine. The problem occurs during the transition to an HTML/SWF-based preview or published file.
Unfortunately the problem appears to be intermittent and unpredictable: one Preview (in Web Browser) might show one corrupt screen; a subsequent Preview (in Web Browser) might show four corrupt screens (after making no changes to the Captivate file). It appears to be related to various timeline factors (mouse position, mouse duration). I was able to temporarily eliminate the problem in one project file by making sure all mouse elements had a 2/10th second gap before the end of the slide and were no longer than 2 seconds long. But in a later test, controlling for these variables did not work.
There are two other related bugs that occur in Preview or publish:
Mouse. If I move the mouse object from its original position on the timeline, say, from the end of the slide to a position just before, and then move it back to the end of the slide, the result is faulty mouse behavior. It moves very slowly over the first part of its arc, then either skips suddenly to the destination or doesn't complete the arc at all when the slide advances to the next slide.
Audio. Sometimes the audio for a single slide will not play. This is intermittent and unpredictable, like the screen corruption bug. The problem sometimes goes away after moving the mouse on the timeline slightly, but this isn't reliable.
In any case, moving the mouse away from the end of the slide is not a desirable workaround, even when it does work. The delay between the "click" and the slide transition looks sloppy, and is contrary to the expected mouse behavior (to quickly trigger a slide transition).
I have been working with two people at Adobe tech support, but we have not found a solution or isolated the problem. I've also documented several keystroke bugs on this forum. So, after nearly 3 weeks of aggravation, I have concluded that Captivate 6 for Mac has serious bugs and is not reliable. I am forced to go back to Captivate 5.5.

I have experienced the exact same issues.  I've republished files over and over again with unpredictable results.  Missing audio, ghost backgrounds, visual artifacts.  That doesn't even begin to address the other major annoyances like the stage jumping around when you do things like adjust element properties, audio editor opening up half off the screen so that it has to be manually dragged back EACH TIME.
I'm totally frustrated and disgusted with the quality of this product.  I don't care one bit about all the new features it has, I just want the featues that are there to work right and work reliably.  Today alone, I lost over 4 hours of productivity to resolving buggy software issues... I'm not exaggerating, 4 HOURS !.  This is absolutely unacceptable.  The software does NOT work well at all.  Adobe should be horrified with how bad this software performs.  I can't say enough negative things about this without using expletives that are well deserved.
After purchssing adobe software for 25 years, I am running out of patience.  They are too big and too focused on new features instead of just making the ones they have work well.  I used to love Adobe more than any other software company.  That is definitely no longer the case.  I have no intention of up doing any more upgrades after this.  If these APPALLING blatant issues are not resolved before they release version 7,  I will not upgrade and may well consider enlisting others in a class action suit.  Fire all the developers who have a hand in this.  Fire all the managers who signed off on it's readiness.  Go back to the drawing board and make this right.
I fully intend on posting this in every forum I can find.  This software has cost me too much time and money.

You can download the trial version (http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/acrobat-downloads.html) to convert the PDF back to WORD if you do not have the original. The conversion may not be perfect, but it is typically better than starting from scratch. You may be lucky and get a good result. You might check the settings (in the save screen) to try retain format versus retain text flow. The format version can be a pain to edit since it creates a bunch of text boxes. The flow version may require you to reformat in WORD, but you likely would want to do that anyway.

  • I can't synchronize my iPod's with my iTunes software (Windows Vista Home Premium) due to problems with the access authorization / rights for this operation

    Hi there,
I'd like to ask you something:
I'm trying to synchronize all my iPod's (I have as many as 4 iPods: 2 iPod touch a 8 GB each and 2 iPod classic a 160 GB each) with my iTunes software (Version 11.3.1 which is installed on a Windows PC (Windows Vista Home Premium)). Unfortunately, the iTunes software refuses to run the command "synchronize with the iPod connected" regarding each and every iPod I have. iTunes just declares:
Synchronizing is impossible because I wouldn't hold the access authorization / rights for this operation.
I uploaded the songs at issue to my iTunes folder from CD's (all songs are in AAC format now).
What is this access authorization, why was something like that invented and what can I do to get it?
How do I have to proceed in detail?
    What would it cost?
I am brand new here and have never ever made a post in any support community anywhere in the world in my life. Well, and I am not excessively knowledgeable about the particular computer or mac language but I know the very basics or can find out about them.
Anyways - can you help me please?
If you can't help me, who can do so?
It would be nice if you could answer me as soon as possible!
    Thank you guys
    Prying Pedro

Yes, others have experienced the problem, a simple search of the forums would have revealed that and the simple solution.
Termporarily disable any security software on the computer.

  • Macbook Air right for an engineering major?

I'm currently a Biomedical and Mechanical Engineering double major at UC Davis, and I wanted some input on whether or not a Macbook Air would be suitable for my needs. The 13" 2013 unit with the Haswell CPU is only $999 on Amazon right now and I figured it is priced so competetively with other ultrabooks now that I can actually consider it.
As far as I know, I need access to a Python and C/C++ IDE and compiler, MATLAB, and several CAD applications that my school gives us for certain classes. That's pretty much all I need from now through my bachelors degree. I'll also dual boot Windows 8 since I may occasionally miss Windows, since this will be my only PC from now on (I completely stopped gaming so I sold my custom desktop). I'll also run any programs that are Windows only in Windows of course.
Sure, I will be doing some software design, but the ULV i5 is plenty powerful. I'm not doing some insane rendering or anything. Just some very basic rendering and programming.
    So I have 3 questions:
    1. Is a Macbook Air right for an Engineering major? How has having a Macbook "changed" you as an engineer?
    2. Is there any way to have a Windows Partition, an OSX Partition, and an exFAT partition to share my music and videos across both OS's? Both Windows and OSX can read and write to exFAT right?
    3. What external hard drive and USB drive formats (other than FAT since I have files larger than 4GB) are best for transferring files to and from OSX and Windows machines?
Thanks for the help! I'm looking forward to purchasing a Mac since they are so competetively priced now. I think Apple mad a great move with these price cuts.

I second the above opinion, as I am an Electrical Engineering student currently. I've been using an 11" Air for everything (full options, i7, 8gb, 512ssd). I was using a mid 2011 and i just got the new 2013 model and I have to say both have performed outstanding.
Since you're gonna be an engineer i'll tell you how I run my machine to let you know how powerful it is for school:
I run 4 desktops that i swipe between constantly with 10+ programs running, most of which are not your normal small programs (Autocad, MotionBuilder, etc.)
My 5th desktop that i swipe between is Parallels Desktop running windows 7 for the non-mac apps, inside of windows i typically run 3+ programs which include AutoCad, Quartus (electronic modeling) and PSpice.
Keep in mind that I run all of this at the same time and it's probably too much (I don't need to run everything at once I just love to keep evrything up so between classes I don't have to prepare for the next).
All I have to say is the machine kills it. i'm serious, no lag, fluid autocad building, low heat, and great battery, i got about 5 hours out of my 2011 model and i expect to see 8+ out of this one when school gets going again.
You're in the right direction, i think you'll be more than happy with a new Macbook Air if you max out the options, and then you'll increase the resale so in 2-3 years you can grab the latest and greatest as i did.
Good luck in engineering and don't let it get to you, stick it out and it'll be worthwhile!

  • Problems Managing User Access Rights for Web Gallery

Has anyone else had issues changing the user access rights for a web gallery? It seems like the access is everyone or no one. Are the user rights handled per event in the gallery? I had issues adding events to the user's view/download rights in the publish settings.
Also, can these settings only be set when an event is first published? Attempting to change the user access rights after the event is published seems to require a re-upload of the images.
    Any thoughts?

    Problem solved.
I had to put the following lines in the specified "0000_any_80.my.website.conf" file:
            <Directory "/Library/WebServer/subdomain.domain">

  • CP8 - How to embed a pdf into a captivate slide (for LMS publication)?

    Hi,
How to embed a pdf into a captivate slide (for LMS publication)?
    WebObject doesn't work...
    Thanks

I accomplished this by publishing my PDF to a directory I called "PDFWebObjectEmbedFiles" on my webserver outside of where my published project lives.
For example...the PDF to embed lived at:
    http://mydomain.com/PDFWebObjectEmbedFiles/file_name_of_PDF_to_embed.pdf
Then I went inside of Captivate and inserted the Web Object widget.  I put the URL to my PDF inside the widget.  Then it loads perfectly with no problem.
    Hope this helps.

  • Admin and user rights for change active airport

    Hello alltogether,
my son has a new MacBook (System 10.5) for his school and he learn with the computer in all school-subjects. So I create two users, admin and one for him. After he has install all applications that he need for school, I gave the admin a password. Now my son can't install applications or change system settings. But i must give him admin rights, because when he stay at school, he must change the airport environment for school and if he stay at home he must change it back to home. Is it not possible to set the rights for a not admin user so, that he can change the airport environment?
    Thanks for reading.
    Regards,
    Tommy

If he needs admin status to use the wireless connection, then you need to make him an admin user. As far as I know, there is no partial admin configuration.

  • Is a Macbook Pro right for me?

So I'm looking in to buying a new computer, and I want to know if the Macbook Pro is right for me. (Making the topic title sort of self explanatory.)
I've been using PCs all my life and I've recently been lounging around the Apple site and looking at the Macs, since, until now, I've never had a large enough computer budget to buy one, but I'm into gaming and my main concern is the graphics card in the Macbook Pro, since I have to pay over my ($1,500) budget, though, the $1,529 refurbished mac is 15 inches and has the Radeon 6770m, which is actually a pretty good graphics card from the notebook check benchmarks... does anyone use their Mac for gaming? My backup is the 27" iMac with the 6950, which is also very good. I also think that most of the programs are just better quality for the kind of stuff I want to do. iMovie > > > > > > > > Windows Movie Maker (especially that new Live variation...) and Garage Band is better than anything I can get for the PC. Just saying.

I think I'd like portability, being I could bring on trips and stuff like that. Here's the link to the one I'm looking at.

or this mac if I can scrape together some more funds.

  • I suddenly cannot startup Captivate 4 for reason Flash Player for Internet Explorer not installed or older version, but I have verified that Flash Player 16,0,0,235 is installed. Please help.

    Hi,
I haven't used my Adobe Captivate 4 for a bit, but when I try to start it up, I get the following message:
"The Flash Player for Microsoft Internet Explorer, is not installed or its an older version.
You will automatically be redirected to the Adobe website to download the latest Flash Player.
Please note that the Adobe Captivate cannot be used until the Flash Player is installed."
Even if I click the OK button and reinstall the Flash Player, I still get the same message, when I try to startup Captivate.
I have verified that I'm running Flash player 16,0,0,235, which is supposed to be the latest version.
I'm running Windows 7 and Internet Explorer 11.
    Please help.

The problem is that your version of Captivate 4 needs to be updated with a patch that Adobe used to supply.  (I don't have a link anymore to it.)
Captivate 4 was unable to recognise Flash Player versions beyond a certain number.  It gives you a misleading  error message that makes it look like you have the wrong version of Flash Player.  But the real problem is that Captivate needs to be patched to recognise the latest FP versions.
I'm hoping that someone from the Adobe Captivate team will chime in here and give us another link to download the patch.  Otherwise, you really might be forced to upgrade to a newer version of Cp.  However, if your current projects are being built in Cp4, your next issue will be that if you purchase Cp8 it will NOT be able to upgrade your Cp4 projects.  You'd need to download a trial version of Cp5 or 5.5, and do a two-step upgrade.

  • Is the IPad right for me

    hi guys,
i am trying to figure out if the ipad is right for me. i very much want one, but it seems to me that there are several reasons that it won't work for me.here is my situation: i travel a lot for work, so it would be in my best interest to consolidate how much i have to pack with me when i travel. right now i have to bring my 15' mbp with me wherever i go. i must have internet access for my job. since i spend a lot of time in hotel rooms, i have transferred most of my movie collection to a portable external hard drive that i bring with me....its about 600gb of data.
    so here are my questions:
    1) is there a way the ipad can access the movies on the external hard drive?
    2) most hotels have wireless, but there are some i stay at that only have wired internet in the rooms
    3) i have 64 gb itouch and an amazon kindle already, so is there any reason to get a ipad considering that i have major problems with the fact that the 3G plans aren't unlimited, and so if i only got the wireless version, i would basically have the itouch with a book reader (which i already have).
i very much want the ipad, i just am not sure if there are solutions to those problems above. i really don't want to get into jailbreaking the thing because i don't want to void the warranty, so i know that takes away some possibilities right there. any advice anyone can offer would be appreciated. thanks!!

thanks for the response julian, and to answer your question, of course i don't NEED the 600gb of movies, haha, but WANTING is something different, right ..... to be honest, no, i don't need all that, but sometimes i am on the road for 7-10 days, and i don't watch tv really, so its nice to be able to have anything i need in the area of movies. as for the airport express, i just found that solution as well, and i already have an airport express at home, so then is it possible just to create a wireless network if need be in the hotel room? i havent done that before.

  • Is Arch Linux right for me?

Arch seems like a pretty awesome distro, and I think I would like it a lot. But is it right for me?
I was first introduced to Linux and Unix-based systems last summer when I took a course at my local community college. Since then, I have installed Ubuntu on my HP laptop. In the past months, I have learned and taught myself a lot about the way linux works: downloading and installing software, Unix command line prompt, etc.
Ubuntu is a fantastic distro for linux beginners, but I feel like I'm ready to take the next step and I'm always itching to see a little more of what goes on behind the scenes. I read a guide on Arch over at LifeHacker and skimmed the "Getting Started" guide on Arch Wiki and I generally understood everything that was going on; nothing seemed way over my head. So I think I could handle Arch. What do you guys think?
If you think I should take Arch for a spin, is it practical to install it as my main OS on my main machine? Should I dual-boot it next to Ubuntu or similar? I am planning on building a PC this summer and am currently debating over which OS to use; Arch is a main candidate. My main uses for this computer will be surfing the net, listening to music (integration with my iPod would be great), a little video editing, some casual gaming, and general programming/tinkering with my computer.
I know y'all probably get a lot of these but I appreciate your feedback.

Check out the Beginner's Guide and The Arch Way in the wiki.  It's important to note that what really distinguishes Arch from most other distros is that it isn't a distro in the most common sense of the term.  Ubuntu, Fedora, SuSE, Sabayon, Mandriva, PCLOS, etc. have graphical installers that pre-configure everything for you;  the choices are made for you, and you'll have to work around anything you don't find to your liking. You can easily add and remove programs, but always limited by what they've provided: packages that are patched in order to work in the way they've deemed appropriate, and an init system that's opaque to users (remember the fuss over certain graphics drivers not rendering Plymouth splashes correctly?  I've never had that issue in Arch).  Arch, on the other hand, is essentially a set of tools--the Arch Installation Framework, a couple init scripts, about six config files (give or take), repos, the ABS tree, the kernel and a package manager--that allow a user to craft their own operating system to their liking.  A couple of the things I just mentioned are even optional as it is; at least three of those config files have never been touched by me, as I don't need them.  Combine this sense of freedom and control with the DIY philosophy (which I find empowering as well, but hell--I enjoy research, learning and problem solving) and the close-knit community, and you've got my favorite distro.  Ultimately, it's the choices of the developers that make a distro what it is; the software--at least in principle--rarely changes.  In the case of Arch, most everything comes straight from upstream, goes in the testing repo briefly, then ends up in the standard repo, only altered if deemed necessary for security or basic functionality.
I left Ubuntu after switching to KDE and finding Kubuntu not to my liking;  I also found that many of the "conveniences" of Ubuntu (and the 9-12 other distros I tried afterward) just got in the way.  For example, why use the Ubuntu USB Startup Disk Creator or Unetbootin when "dd" is faster and easier?  How much frustration could I have avoided installing the Catalyst driver in Ubuntu or SuSE if I'd done so manually (with a number of console commands I can count on one hand) rather than mess around with a GUI, thus knowing exactly what I did wrong?  To me, it just seems better to start with what I absolutely need and build up piecemeal, rather than add a bunch of crap I don't need/want/even know is there in the first place and hide it all behind extra GUI's, then try and pick it apart.  Ultimately, you make Arch what you want it to be.  No one can tell you if it's right for you, or if you should install it (there are rare cases where folks here would flat-out say "No," but yours doesn't seem to be one of 'em ).  Check out those wiki articles I mentioned;  if it seems like something that interests you, give it a whirl!
