Is cloud computing just a way of renting resources?

The company I work at recently hosted a web service in Windows Azure and announced that. Now trade online magazines say lots of meaningless stuff like "company X moves to the cloud", "company X drops desktops for the cloud", etc.
Looks like there're lots of materials out there (starting with Wikipedia)
that are very lengthy and talk a lot about "services" and "low entry price" and other stuff but I've read all that and don't see how they could be helpful for a layman in drawing a line between a service in a cloud and Stack Exchange that
is also a service but is run on brick-and-mortar servers in a colocation.
Now from my experience with Windows Azure the real difference is the following. With a cloud the service owner rents hardware, network bandwidth and right to use the middleware (Windows 2008 that is used in Azure roles for example) on demand and also there's
some maintenance assistance (like if the computer where a role is running crashes another computer is automatically found and the role is redeployed). Without a cloud the service owner will have to deal with all that on his own.
Will that be the right distinction?

Creative Cloud Installer gets half way through downloading the desktop app then just disappears, without downloading, why is that?
I have recently purchased a student subscription to the 'complete package', my credit card was charged.  Then I download the Creative Cloud Installer from the website, that's fine, then I double click the Creative Cloud Installer as per instructions, it starts downloading the desktop app, but only gets to about halfway then just disappears.
I've tried using both safari and chrome, restarting my computer, but neither has worked.
I have noticed that the website will not keep me logged in for long either, it keeps switching to BUY instead of DOWNLOAD.
    Any ideas?

    Hi brett242424,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The movie would be in your iTunes library, in the Movies application.  However, if the rental period has expired, you may need to contact the iTunes Store Support about your situation:

Ok so I have tried evey combination of restarts. It tries to boot up, the start up bar appears on screen, but the computer just goes completely after the bar is a third of the way across. Is is doomed?

Have you tried booting into the Recovery HD and running Disk Utility to see if anything needs fixing on the HD. Restart holding down Command+r and once it hopefully boots select Disk Utility>Repair Disk. If anything gets fixed click on repair disk again until you get a clean pass. Try restarting as normal from the Apple menu once done.
Do you have backup to restore from if it proves to be the Mac has a hardware fault?

  • I would like to not use the i cloud and just go back to the way my phone was before

I recently upgraded to the 6.1.3 OS and then proceeded to lose all of my contacts.  My fault for not backing up!! But, I also ended up having the i cloud and I really don't want it.  I don't need any more complications.  I would like to delete the icloud from my phone and just go back to what I had before.  I have backed up now but the contacts are lost forever. But, i cloud is just one more thing to learn, worry about, eventually pay for etc. and it is not important to me.  I don't do movies or music.  Just use the phone for calls and email.
    WenSue

You don't 'pay' for iCloud, unless you voluntarily upgrade from the free 5GB of storage.
Also, having iCloud automatic backup on, with Contacts set to 'On', means that your Contacts will backup to the iCloud... which means if you lost them off of your phone, you could retrienve them.
Read this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4859 and then decide if it's right for you. There are ways to back up your data to prevent accidental loss.  Use them.

Hi Jeff:  thanks for getting back to me.  My daughter was downloading

uninstalled what she thought was the demo but now we are unable to

  • Role of SAP vendors in Cloud Computing

    Hi all,
I have come across several articles mentioning how SAP is adapting itself to enable its integration with Cloud Comouting.
I would just like to know that in case SAP moves to cloud computing, what will be the role of the the existing SAP vendors?
Will there still be scope for customer specific implementations?
    Pls answer my querries.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,

    Hi Tushar,
The role of SAP BW Consultant in a Implementation varies from project to project and also on the requirements specifications.
Check the below thread for your understanding.

  • Cloud Computing

    Hi everybody,
There's a lot of good information coming from the experts here.
It seems to me that more and more people are using the cloud to store their data.  It frees up space on their hard drives.
    Just how safe is it?
What security is available to insure that my data is safe and is not being subverted?
Are there any restrictions as to what data is allowed to be saved to the cloud?
Does the company that hosts the cloud have access to my data?
It seems to me that a company or an individual could store questionable data to the cloud if there weren't any restrictions on content.
Are there any recommendations as to what clouds are good to use?  Which ones are safe?
What happens to your cloud if the company that hosts it goes out of business or gets sold or merged to another company? I think I already know the answer to this one.  I'll bet a lightning bolt gets shot into my cloud and my stuff disappears.
I've been tempted to use cloud computing, but I'm just a little leery of the implications.
I use a few hosting sites to store some pictures, but nothing major.

How safe your data is or what happens to it if the company fails aren't functions of "the cloud', but rather functions of the companies with which you choose to do business. If you're looking at a cloud-based provider, some questions you will want answered include:
    1. What type of encryption is used to store the data?
    2. Who, besides yourself, will be able to decrypt and/or access that data?
    3. What contingency plan does the company have in place in the event of failure (natural or financial)?
The biggest advantage to out-sourcing your data storage is so that you can access that data from multple devices / locations. This also means that the biggest disadvantage is that the data you've stored can be accessed from multiple devices / locations. If your login credentials are stolen, attackers could gain access to the data you've shared.
Some folks will encrypt files before they are uploaded with a second layer of encryption applied at the host. If you're storing sensitive data, encrypting data twice is a good idea. If you're storing non-sensitive data, then the encryption supplied by the cloud supplier is probably fine.
Note that whatever you store there will be subject to subpoena / search / seizure if it's suspected you are engaged in illegal activities.

  • Cloud Computing Decrease Job Opportunity

    Hi Guru's,
I have a query about Cloud Computing now everyone talking about the same, that from 2014 companies start thinking about the same. So it means DBA jobs are less in market
So What need to do to cope up with this possibility.
    Kindly guide over this.

    >
    Hi Vikas,
So in this scenario what you suggest to do wheather we need to update
skills on Oracle or we need to go with cloud or what exactly the path need to followCloud = Shroud! ;)
At the end of the day, the term "cloud" is just a fancy term for network combined with
    data consolidation.
The data will have to sitting in a database somewhere.
The only thing "cloud" means is that instead of the data sitting in a smelly server-room
in the basement of your building - it will be in a data center in New York, Dublin, Bangalore
or <insert city of your choice>, but DBA's will still be required.
Think of the cloud as being the new Sysadmins (again consoliated).
Of course it is a good idea for the DBA to have some clue as to the network
capacity &c., but it's not mission critical for the DBA - just as Sysadmins can see
databases merely as another consumer of network resources.
A good Sysadmin will have a good knowledge
of the systems he's working on, but it's not critical. In the old days, maybe
(as has frequently happened) the Sysadmin was the DBA and vice-versa.
The IT workspace is becoming increasinly consolidated, but you needn't worry
about running out of DBA jobs any time soon.
    Again, IMHO.

  • SaaS/Cloud Computing/Business By Design and SAP

    Hi All,
The concept of SaaS is now not new as this is getting popular day by day. I remember three years back during the same time SAP has announced about its entering into SaaS market with its mySAP CRM as hosted solution.
Lots of Big giants were also coming with the idea of SaaS.  SAP;s Business by Design was also based on hosted or rented solution i guess.
Now Similar situation is with Cloud Computing concept.
Looking at the current market scenario, what you all think about the SAP's Next move towards SaaS or Cloud Computing......
    Thanks,
    Raja

Valid point.  However, I do appreciate Sapu2019s go-slow approach to the business model given all the attendant practical limitations - broadband bandwidth etc.
Nonetheless I believe technologically we are almost there (Netsuite), SaaS has definitely matured and SAP is right to have a foothold now.
Some thing to watch for the future!

  • I just downloaded Lion and now my computer just shuts down for no reason. What is its problem?

I just downloaded Lion and now my computer just shuts down for no reason. What is its problem?

I recently made the same mistake.  The thing to do is download the new Quicken Essentials for MAC.  After you install the new version follow the instructions on how to transfer your old files.  There is a way, it just takes a little time and, if I remember correctly, it takes the info from your quicken backup files. Hopefully you had auto back up on and your files are intact.  I didn't and reconstruction was a bear but entirely possible.  The new Quicken is quite different but seems to work quite well.  Good luck.

  • Building Flex application with Flex Builder in a Remote Server - Cloud Computing

    Hey Guys
I have a query or its confusion probably
I was just thinking if this kind of solution is existing or possible with say cloud computing or anything else?
This is what we all probably do for building our flex application?
    1. There is Remote Server hosting our source code
    2. Developer check out the code in their system locally by some Configuration tool like Perforce, CVS etc
    3. Developer Install Flex  Builder IDE locally and open the IDE and then create.build locally and then on testing check in the code in repository
All this is fine but we have some problem here
    a. We have to get all the source code checked out/downloaded in some local machine
    b. We have to install Flex Builder in each every developer machine with license.
A possible modification in the above can be as follows
    1. Don't download/check out the source code locally in each machine
    2. Create a mapped network drive of the Remote Repository and then work directly with the mapped network drive
    3. Install Flex Builder  locally
    4. Start Flex Builder create a Flex Project with source code in the mapped network drive
But this has some potential problem as now the building of the flex application directly work with the mapped network drive. This is very slow especially when we Keep the "Build Automatically" Check box to true
My question is that can we have a solution like this ?
    1. There is Remote Server hosting our source code
    2. There is another 2nd Remote Server which support workspace for each user
    3. Flex Builder installed in the 2nd Remote Server
    4. Each Developer connects to the 2nd Remote Server log in to their workspace
    5. Each developer check out code by connecting to 1st Remote Server. This code which is checked out now goes in their workspace in the 2nd Remote Server
    6. Start Flex Builder instance which is running in the 2nd Remote Server
    5. Each developer open source code modifies, build application in their workspace and check
I think this is something that I heard cloud computing can do ? Do anyone have any idea whether this kind of environment is possible in Flex or can anyone suggest something which is almost close to this ?
    Regards
    Biswamit

    Hi
The concept of cloud computing is not even very clear to me
I think this is what I understood about it ...........from this link http://communication.howstuffworks.com/cloud-computing.htm
    It says
"Instead of installing a suite of software for each computer, you'd only have to load one application. That application would allow workers to log into a Web-based service which hosts all the programs the user would need for his or her job. Remote machines owned by another company would run everything from e-mail to word processing to complex data analysis programs. It's called cloud computing, and it could change the entire computer industry"
"There's a good chance you've already used some form of cloud computing. If you have an e-mail account with a Web-based e-mail service like Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail or Gmail, then you've had some experience with cloud computing. Instead of running an e-mail program on your computer, you log in to a Web e-mail account remotely"
My issue is not with the license. The solution that I am looking for is
    1. Don't want the developer to download the source code in any fashion either checked out or anything else in the local machine
    2. Want the developer to work directly on the server
    3. Looking for a solution where each developer is not required to install Flex Builder locally and the developer can use Flex Builder that is installed on the server and in his workspace and create/modify build on the server itself
Hope I could make you understand this time ................
