Is Compressor For Me?

I am creating a slideshow in Keynote at 1080 x 1920p and exporting it to a QuickTime movie file. I want to be able to put it on a SD memory card, insert that in an HDTV and play the movie. As far as I can tell, the HDTV supports MPEG2 and AVCHD video formats, so I just need to convert my .mov file into an MPEG2 or AVCHD.
Is Compressor the right tool for me or is it overkill? Is there a cheaper/simpler tool? I don't use Final Cut, I really just want to transcode video.
Thanks.

Well, Greg, one of the cheapest transoding solutions is MPEG Streamclip a free download. It's faster at doing a lot of things than Compressor, but isn't as full-featured. Another benefit of Compressor is that it provides access to a wide range of codecs. It can also do many other tricks including simple disk authoring and outputting for mobile devices. But if you're not getting into editing, try Streamclip and see whether it meets your needs.
BTW, an alternative way to play your slideshow is from your MBP through your TV.
Good luck.

  • Where to get compressor for 10.9.4

I could really use Compressor for use on my MBP that is running 10.9.4
When I go to purchase from the app store it says it is only compatible with yosemite. And it will not download.
    Can't I purchase compressor v 4.01 ?
And if I can, where do I purchase it?
    Thanks,
    theo

You definitely don't need FCP to get Compressor.
But you do need Yosemite. Apple does make available updates to earlier versions of applications for people running 10.7 and higher, but AFAIK it's only for those who have previously purchased the application. Here is the support doc if you're interested in testing whether it will work for a new purchase.
Alternatively, if you don't want to update 10 10, there are a couple of dual boot methods to consider: 1) You may be able to partition your existing drive and install 10.10 on that volume. 2) Connect an external drive and install 10.10 on that/ In either case, you would download Compressor and boot from the new volume when you wanted to run the application.

  • Best compressor for quicktimefiles

I mostly work om DVCPRO HD material so I cannot export with the DVCPRO HD compressor if I want I file suitable for computerplayback (not all macs and pcs kan play it..)
h.264 works fine on all computers with Quicktime 7 but I loose a lot of color with that compressor. Is it a better compressor that works fine on all computers?

I don't see a lot of color loss when exporting H.264 files... are you using compressor for this export? Might try that. If you are seeing some loss, you might try preserving the color with that option found in the last tab in the Inspector under the "filters" button.

  • Compressor for Final Cut Exp

Is there anything like compressor for FCP´s little brother FCE? I need to encode Movies into MPEG 1 Muxed (Mpeg 2,4 and Flash) and bug them.
Are there any applications that allow batch processings and so on?
    Thank you

There a number of other applications that can do what you want, Sorenson Squeeze, Cleaner, Telestream Episode. They all have demo versions.

  • Setting up compressor for project.

from final cut studio. how or what am i to do. after i export the movie into compressor from final cut. the movie is in HD any suggestions ?

First you'll need to decide what it is you want Compressor to do. Will your video be for web delivery? iPod? Cell phone? DVD-Video? Maybe a combination of delivery methods?
Once you've determine how you want to deliver, you choose the presets in Compressor for those delivery methods accordingly. And once you've chosen a preset, you can alter it (if needed) to suit the needs of your particular program.

  • Cropping 16:9 video in Compressor for output in 3GPP format

    Hi all,
We need to regularly batch convert video for a client, from a 16:9 original to 3GPP's 176x144 ratio by cropping and resizing in Compressor. However, when setting up the encoding settings for 3GPP output, the Geometry fields are greyed out, meaning I can't crop the edges from the original.
The current workaround is to output the file first as an M-Peg (cropping it at this stage), and then re-encode that file in the 4 different 3GPP versions we need.
The question is, is there a better way to do this? Can I force the crop to take place at the same time as it's encoded to 3GPP, or, if we're stuck with a 2-stage encoding process, can I make Compressor automatically begin the re-encoding of the M-Peg file to 3GPP, as soon as the initial transcoding is complete (AppleScript, Automator?)
    Thanks

So, if I drop in my source, add an MPEG-2 preset (120 minute video) and then modify the aspect ratio drop down to 16:9, is there anything else I need to do to get the same result as the 16:9 preset in Compressor 2?
There shouldn't be anything else you need to do.
By the way, it should automatically detect aspect ratio (via the anamorphic flag in DV/SD QT files) but I suppose setting it manually couldn't hurt.

  • I just purchased Compressor for Final Cut Pro X. Won't complete

    Hi there
Help please. I was so looking forward to Compressor working simply and effectively. I have an hour video in HD edited in Final Cut Pro x. Pulled down Compressor which I just bought. Every time I try to render it in a smaller compressed file from 1920 to 540 it starts the process but slowly starts off with an estimated completion time of 26 minutes to a day later still going at it and now estimates 48 hours!!!!!! It just gets longer and longer and doesn not complete.  I tried numerous different settings and everytime the same result. Driving me nuts. Help please anyone. I will make you a cup of coffee!

HI Duane, it's worth trying to isolate the issues if it is compressor.app. If you have time you might  expand a little in your procedure that you are using to use compressor so that others may offertheir advice.
    Procedure;
see if the FCPX project is having issues being rendered within FCPX.
determine if you can export a master with FCPX.
see if compresor.app without Qmaster will transcode a distribution
    Questions:
Are you using QMASTER? IF not that's a good start to help isolate your workflow issues.
FCPX Have you COMPLETELY rendered out the Storylines in your FCPX project? (do this first... yeah I know BG procesisng)... but try this first before procedding to step 3..
FCPX : WHen this is done (step 2), try and EXPORT | SHARE the project using the DEFAULT codec (Prores??) to a separate MASTER FILE...
Compressor.app: add the MASTER file from Step 3 to compressor.app as a batch and submit WITHOUT using QMASTER (This Computer) to make you new distribution ..
see if you get some satisfaction from the above.
IF you get through these steps then you may elimiate your FCPX project as the error cause and focus on compressor..for any errors (console.app) ..
Lastly, appreciate that FCPX must render some tranistory (intermediate) "master" in order to "Send to Compressor" (if that's what your workflow is) . It will render this first first. Check activuty monitor.app for "promsrenderer" subtasks. THis pre-flight renedering may take time and is managed by FCPX before is appears in Compressor.app. THis is why I ask you to try above procedure first.
If this work or doesn't let this thread know. Yell out if you need help.. plenty on this forum!
(BTW.. my coffee = beans for the Netherlands, ground locally in my machine served super strong with Japanese milk... frothy .. loll
Post your results for others to see.

You have to add the Service Offerings and the Request Offerings in the Catalog Group. Nesting doesn't work because Service Offerings and Request Offerings are different types of objects.
This offers the option the manage the access to Service Offerings and Request Offerings very granular if needed. For instance you can control access to a Service Offering in one Catalog Group related to one user role (A) and use two additional Catalog Groups
with different Request Offerings related to other user roles (B) and (C). Result will lead to:
User in Role A and B -> Can see Service Offerings A containing Request Offerings B
User in Role A and C -> Can see Service Offerings A containing Request Offerings C
User in Role A, B and C -> Can see Service Offerings A containing Request Offerings B and C
User in Role A only -> Don's see anything because of the missing permission on any Request Offering. So the "empty" Service Request won't show up in the portal.
    Hope his helps.

  • Apple Video Compressor for iBA?

Is Compressor - https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/compressor/id424390742 useful for videos in iBooks Author? Or is iBA doing the same job for free?

The Video is most likely "Multiplex". Its explained here on how to find out.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302588
If it is, you need another program to convert the file to a "ipod friendly" format like Videora (Free) or quicktime pro (Buy)

  • Compressor for dvcprohd 1080i60 material

    hi -
i've just finished editing a sequence in fcp 5.1.4. the settings for the sequence are dvcprohd 1080i60 @ 29.97.
i'm trying to author a dvd using dvd studio pro. i exported the sequence using the dvcprohd 1080i60 compressor. when i open the material in dvd studio pro (whether in the simulator or in the viewer), i notice that there are artifacts.
is this because i am using the wrong compressor? should i be using mpeg 2 to export from fcp? i'm simply trying to author a standard definition dvd at the highest quality possible (it is only a 3 minute sequence) so any help in terms of workflow/compression would be great...
    thanks in advance.
    paul

Exporting to Compressor from FCP (encoding directly to SD mpeg2) will be the best way to go. There is one more option you can use to ensure the best possible quality:
Since the frame is being resized, you can activate the frame controls in Compressor - setting the resize filter to best will force Compressor to do a smoother job of the image resampling, but it can greatly increase encoding times.

  • Encoding in Compressor for iDVD 7

Is there a way within iDVD 7 to change the burn speed of the SuperDrive? I have not been able to find it. BTW, is there anything I should know about encoding a Final Cut program in Compressor and bringing it into iDVD 7 for the themes and burn?

Much easier and cleaner to use Compressor w/ the pro apps / FCP => DVDSP.
However, it's not impossible to use with with iMovie ..... here's the steps I took under expert settings (and btw there are a few minor artifacts as you pointed out above mainly over fast moving objects). Fred's 100% correct about GIGO....

  • Compressor for JVC files, good work takes time?

    Hi,
I am using Compressor to convert my JVC footage (*.TOD, 1080P output) into ProRes 422 (HQ) before importing into FCP 7 (being "native" to FCP). Trying to keep the quality maximal.
Up to now I found no other way than to first convert to h264 *.MOV (for which PavTube TOD Converter gave me much better results than MPEG Streamclip, but maybe I got lost between those millions of settings). Then I use Compressor 3.5 to further convert to ProRes. Files have been compressed first (about one third of original size), but during the Compressor process they get decompressed again (about ten times). Wonder if I loose a lot of quality in the process?
Besides, Compressor is taking forever to do the job. Once the batch is running, it is relatively fast (multithreading is still another age), compared to preparation of the batch, even on low priority. Dropping more than ten files onto the droplet makes it stop responding for 15 minutes, then submitting takes another five. Is there a better way to make the process smooth and quality preserving?
Has any of you experienced users a clue for me? I would be very grateful, meanwhile I keep crawling on with my superfast Mac.

    Hi Zak,
Sorry for not coming back before, I was away for some time. Thanks for your answer. I tried very many settings in MPEG Streamclip, but most interesting will be to set up both MPEG Streamclip and PAVTube TOD Converter with the same settings. I took a clip of a Newspaper page plus fast movement of the camera, full daylight.
    MPEG Streamclip:
    1. Codec h.264, Qual 100%, B-frames, rate 25, Size 1920x1080 (16:9), Interlaced scaling, Reinterlace Chroma, Upper field first, then
    2. Codec Apple PrpRes 422 (HQ) other settings same (except B-frames, greyed oput), then
    3. Codec XDCAM EX 1080i50, B-frames, frame rate 50, others same
    versus PAVTube TOD Converter
    4. Codec h264 HD Video, 1920x1080, Rate 12000, frames 25, audio aac, 48 kHz, Bitrate 320000, Channels 2
    Results:
    1. Sharp, but interlace lines visible, motion blur
    2. Sharp, but interlace lines visible, motion blur less
    3. Less sharp, no interlace lines visible, motion blur
    4. Sharp, no interlace lines visible, motion blur less.
It is clear to me, that 4. gives the better results. Be my guest to repeat the experiment, you can download a fully functional copy of PAVTube on http://www.pavtube.com/tod-converter-mac/ Only thing is a watermark in your output.
Please advise me if there are any flaws in my approach, I will be grateful for suggestions how to get (even) better results.
Re Compressor, it does its job well, but why the long waits, there must be smart programmers with Apple who can do better, or am I doing something wrong? I use a droplet which starts the program by itself. But twice submission plus waiting takes an hour for a complete folder of some 1,5GB of clips.

  • Opening Compressor for the 1st time.

I'm pretty new to Compressor and I'm opening it for the first time to create an export but it doesn't open an untitled new batch...or indeed anything. I'm trying to figure out if it's anything stupid on my part before I re-install. Thanks

Yes, not quite that green. Nothing happens when I do that. Kind of frustrating. The App seems dead.

  • Workflow process import and compress footage in compressor for FCP

What is the workflow to import footage from Panasonic H2 camera to compress to Apple Pro Res 422 codec?

    Open Compressor.
Drag your footage into the dropzone on the upper left.
Look in the SETTINGS area in the OTHER WORKFLOWS>Advanced Format Conversions>Apple Codecs for the ProRes 422 for Progressive.  Drag that setting onto your clips.
    Press SUBMIT.
Move the resulting compressed files to where you want them to be on your media drive.  Get rid of the added naming Compressor puts on there (Apple ProRes 422)...then bring into FCP.
    Very simple.

  • Using compressor for Studio Pro first  then....

I wanted to get a jump on the rendering because the titles are not ready yet
for the dvd and thought about using Compressor to go ahead and make the
files like DSP does .Now if I do that, will DSP recompress those after importing them and will I have wasted time going this route
or should it scoot through pretty fast on the muxing thing?
DVD will be 1 hour with better quality.
    TIA
    Tony B

If you have encoded your video files to m2v for tracks, and imported them, then they are not reencoded upon build.

  • How do I configure Compressor for a 122 min clip?

I'm trying to make a 122 min viewer DVD ...its not fancy .. no menus, no titles ... its first play. I've read the user manual trying to figure out how to configure Compressor but I can't make heads or tails of it -- calculating bit rates and all.
its a 22 GB file. I don't need high quality video output. I just need to get this whole clip on one DVD that will play in a consumer deck.
I used Compresssor 1.2 to create files for DVD Pro 3 ... using the "MPEG2 120 min Fast Encode" preset and got 5 GB.
is there a better preset? ... something else I need to do to the quicktime file to fit it on a 4.7 GB disk?
    thanks for your help!
    ana

    Try 120 minute best quality.
Don't forget to compress the audio to AC3.
If that ends up too large, duplicate the preset you just used and dial down the bitrate and save it. Then apply the new version and try again.
Rinse and repeat as nec till it fits.
