Is connection possible without ping request

I have a question which is conceptual in nature, is it possible to receive traffic from a remote host to my host machine even if the ping from host to remote machine is not happening in Linux( Red Hat).
I hope my question is clear that is it possible for a connection to happen from a host to remote machine even if it is not pinging from host to remote machine in Red Hat Linux.
Requesting a reply to my query.
Regards

Hi,
Like Dude said, we check the connection between Linux hosts by ICMP request/response and if you want to transfert data between Linux hosts there are many solutions like scp, ftp, sftp, sync, ......
Note 1: Protocols like ICMP, ssh, ftp,.... use a different ports number, so you can block ICMP and accept Other. Or you can block ftp and accept ICMP.. As you like
Note 2: The response of an ICMP request can be blocked by firewall or by the kernel it self when you modify the contents of the file /proc/sys/net/ipv4/icmp_echo_ignore_all from 0 to 1.
Best regards

  • Lost Mode and Play Sound are "Pending."  However, iCloud indicates that it connected and backed up to iCloud at a date that is 1 week after it went missing.  How is this possible without locking (Lost Mode Pending an internet connection)

    Hi,
    My wife lost her iPhone two weeks ago while on vacation in London (cell service inoperative in foreign country).  Using Find My iPhone app on my device, I activated Lost Mode and Play Sound.  However, both are listed as "Pending," since it those actions require the phone to connect to the internet (wifi only due to no cellular data coverage.).
    We recently returned home and purchased a new iPhone.
    However, when looking to restore the apps/settings from her old phone using a previous iCloud backup, iCloud indicates that the old phone connected to iCloud and backed up the original phone at a date that is 1 week after it went missing.  How is this possible without locking (Lost Mode Pending an internet connection)?
    If the phone was activated and connected to the internet via a wifi signal, shouldn't it immedately lock, show up on the map, Play Sound, and send me an email that the phone has been found?
    I also read somewhere that if running iOS 7, the iCloud website interface enables you to track previous locations, for instance if the phone moves from wifi hotspot to hotspot.  Is that true?  If so, how do I do that?
    Thank you for your time, and have a great day!
    Sincerely,
    - Matt

    just giving this a wee bump as time is of the essence here and i need advice/ answers quick!
    apologies if i've broke any rules!

    Connect time capsule via ethernet to Mac for back-up only. Is it possible without internet connection ?

    Hi Bob,
    I'm not certain the post I sent was posted correctly, as I added it as a reply to a 3-year old thread. Since this is a recently-active thread, though not specific to the issue at hand, I thought I'd post again:
    Three years ago you helped me set up a roaming wireless network in my home. It's been rock-steady and I'm forever grateful to you for the time and guidance you gave me. I'd now like to swap out my AirPort Extreme base station for a time capsule. As I understand it, I should be able to unplug the base station and replace it with the TC without problem, so long as I use all the same settings on my TC... network name, security protocol, password, etc. Given the complexity of my network, I thought I should check with you first for any advice you might have. I don't want to set up a new network or make any changes to the existing one-- with the exception of using the TC in place of the AE. I'm already using Time Machine for backups. As a refresher, my current setup has the AE as base station and 3 expresses hard-wired with Ethernet connections elsewhere in my home. I have a 4th express set up wirelessly to use with my stereo system at the front of the house. All AXs are 'n's and are set up, as per your instructions, in Bridge mode to extend the existing network. I'm running the most updated version of Mavericks on my MBPro. Any suggestions you might have will be, as always, very much appreciated! Sincerely, Phyllis Sommers

    Can anyone please help? Every time I start up my imac OSX 10.6 desktop my Aperture 3 programme opens up without being requested. Is it possible to stop this happening and only allow Aperture to open by using the desktop icon? Thank you for any assistance anyone may be able to give.
    Best regards, John.

    because there is absolutely no mention in my System Preferences of either Users & Groups nor Start Up Items.
    John,
    William's solution was much easier - just for completeness sake: The preferences panes to edit your startup items moved between the Mac OS X updates: I forgot that the "Users&Groups" preference pane used to be called "Users" in Mac OS X 10.6; it is the panel that you use to create new User accounts; and earlier systems had a separate preferences panel "Login" to enable and to disable the applications that are launched at login. Both are now combined in "Users&Groups". Sorry for sending you on a wild goose chase with the wrong Preferences panel.
    Regards

    my iPod was originally connect to an old HP. The HP has since died and now I own a Macbook pro. I want to transfer the music from my iPod (originally synced with the HP) to my Macbook Pro. Is this possible without losing the music on my iPod?

    Your iPod is designed to sync with only one iTunes library at a time.  It will recognize the iTunes library on the PC as a new library.  If you sync the iPod with this new library, all content will be erased from the iPod and replaced with what is in the new library.  So what you will want to do is copy everything from the iPod to your new iTunes library on your PC first.
    See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

    I sync my iphone with my office computer, but what I really would like to do is syncing only the calendars (because my secretary uses them to set up new apppointments), but syncing all the rest on my home computer. Is it possible without losing apps or music?

    Although not recommended, yes.
    Disable automatic syncing when the iPhone is connected with iTunes on each computer.
    The only item you will have selected for syncing with iTunes on your computer at work will be Calendars, which is selected under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes. Nothing else will be selected under the various tabs for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes on your computer at work. You will get a warning message that your iPhone is associated with another iTunes library on a different computer which you can ignore when syncing calendars/calendar events only with iTunes on your computer at work.

  • Idoc to Webservice to Idoc scenario- is this possible without BPM?

    Hi guys
    We have a scenario where we need to send an IDoc to webservice and get the response back into another IDoc.
    Questions:
    1. Is this scenario possible without a BPM? or do we need to use BPM (Sync-Async bridge).
    2. Is there a Async to Sync bridge in BPM?
    3. How do I use this bridge in my scenario and customize it?
    Appreciate your quick response
    Regards
    Satya

    Hi Satya,
    >>1. Is this scenario possible without a BPM? or do we need to use BPM (Sync-Async bridge?
    You need BPM
    2. Is there a Async to Sync bridge in BPM?
    You dont need a "bridge", just take a synchronous send step
    3. How do I use this bridge in my scenario and customize it?
    Map the IDoc to request container and the response container to the second IDoc.
    Your need 4 container, receive step, transformation, send step (synchronous), transformation, send step (asyncronous)
    Regards,
    Udo

  • Inbound Service Interface without Input Request Message

    Is it possible to create an Inbound Service Interface without Input Request Message?  We are trying to create a web service to get all records from a database table hence no input parameter is needed.  We have tried in both XI 7.0 and PI 7.1 but couldn't do it.  Is this scenario not supported by ESR or am I missing something?  Any hint will be appreciated.
    Regards,
    Jiannan

    In the scenario I described in my initial post the table structure is only needed in the response message to receive the data.
    For a web service generated from a RFC function module using the service creation wizard (SE80) a table parameter is automatically included in the request message.  I can understand this as the wizard can not figure out if the table parameter is needed in the request message or not.
    I have tried to use the service creation wizard to generate a web service from the function module RFCPING that has no input or output parameters.  As shown in below WSDL segment the WSDL does allow not having any input or output parameters.
    - <wsdl:types>
    - <xsd:schema attributeFormDefault="qualified" targetNamespace="urn:sap-com:document:sap:soap:functions:mc-style">
    - <xsd:element name="Rfcping">
    - <xsd:complexType>
      <xsd:sequence />
      </xsd:complexType>
      </xsd:element>
    - <xsd:element name="RfcpingResponse">
    - <xsd:complexType>
      <xsd:sequence />
      </xsd:complexType>
      </xsd:element>
      </xsd:schema>
      </wsdl:types>
    - <wsdl:message name="Rfcping">
      <wsdl:part name="parameters" element="tns:Rfcping" />
      </wsdl:message>
    - <wsdl:message name="RfcpingResponse">
      <wsdl:part name="parameter" element="tns:RfcpingResponse" />
      </wsdl:message>
    Thanks,
    Jiannan

  • No connection possible to BI master system SAP_BW

    Hello
    We are using the BEX query designer (BI 7 version).  When we open a query in design mode and we then click on the Execute button, we encounter an error as follows:#
    - internet explorer opens up
    - we are prompted to enter a user id / password
    - we then receive an error message
    We get the same error if we try to run the query from RSRT.  If we run the query within RSRT itself, it runs successfully.  If we run the query through RSRT ABAP web, it is also successfull.  We get the error above if we try to run the query using the JAVA Web option.
    Your assistance in this regard will be highly appreciated.
    Kind regards,
    Razia
    The error message is as follows:

    In the /usr/sap/BWD/DVEBMGS00/j2ee/cluster/server0/dev_jrfc.trc file the error below appears.  How do I identify where the setting is made where it is trying to find the Group=PUBLIC and where it is trying to run this RFC from?
    The only place where group = Public is being used is on the following page in the Portal:
    System Administration -> System Configuration -> System Landscape
    Then under PORTAL CONTENT
    ->Systemlandscape -> SAP_BW
    Then in the property editor  there is an entry for Group which I cannot seem to change from the property editor screen.   Using the Configtool how can I access this screen and delete this entry?
    Please advise

    Hi, SDN fellows.
    I finished applying SPs for Solman Manager 7.0 (updated to Solman 7.1 EHP1 - just the Java Stack with JSPM). Then, I decided to start install SAP ECC 6.0 IDES in D drive (solman currently installed in C drive). When I ran the SAP ECC installer till the screen where it require Solution Key, I stopped the process due to invalid solution key provided.
    After that, my Solman system became not able to connect to MS SQL server anymore. Here is the trans messages I got from "R3Trans -d".
    Not sure what isthe root cause, but I found couple messages maybe the leads to root cause.
    I wonder why the DBNAME become empty on this line: 2EETW169 no connect possible: "DBMS = MSSQL                            ---  SERVER = 'MYSERVER101' DBNAME = ''".
    These message also shown that this maybe login related issue:

  • Why does my system respond to ping requests?

    I have the software firewall on and in stealth mode; the online modem Firewall Setting must be at "Minimum Security (Low)" because if I use "Medium" or "High" my e-mail message center in Safari Version 5.1.5 (6534.55.3) times out. I ran GRC's Shields Up and my computer failed the "Ping reply" test. Here's the result:
    Ping Reply: RECEIVED (FAILED) — Your system REPLIED to our Ping (ICMP Echo) requests, making it visible on the Internet. Most personal firewalls can be configured to block, drop, and ignore such ping requests in order to better hide systems from hackers. This is highly recommended since "Ping" is among the oldest and most common methods used to locate systems prior to further exploitation.
    If this a problem that I should address what should I do. Thank you.

    Thanks fane_j.Based on your answer and following your instructions step-by-step, I am definitely behind a router which does NAT although I only have a wired Westell 6100F modem connected to the computer. I use no wireless devices and I do not connect to public hotspots. I did read somewhere that GRC's ShieldsUP! firewall test tends to "exaggerate" the severity of failing the ping reply test. So, at this point, it seems that I can uncheck the Mac's firewall "Stealth Mode" setting (which appears to have been the default unless I had checked it myself at some point in time and forgotten!!) Also, should I double-check my ISP's administrative controls (that can be changed online) and look for "Discard PING requests from the WAN side" or any words to that effect or is it unecessary? Lastly, should I just leave the online Firewall Setting at "Minimum Security (Low)" (because if I use "Medium" or "High" my e-mail message center in Safari Version 5.1.5 times out)? Thanks again.

  • Is clone Siebel server environment possible without using nsbrowse utility?

    Hi, can someone give me a quick firm answer about my question "Is clone Siebel server environment possible without using nsbrowse utility?" We try to automate the Siebel server enviornment using cloning and reconfig on Linux while nsbrowse is a utility only runs on Windows. Is there some command line commands that can be used as a replacement of nsbrowse editor utility? This is very important for us to made the decision on automation strategy. Thank you very much!

    "...hosted in a datacenter for high availability for when internal environment fails and the mail system is still up and running. "
    Yes, Office 365 (Exchange Online) would work perfectly with DirSync.
    If the requirement is for mail to work even when the internal environment is down, then do not implement AD FS because in that scenario, authentication is dependent on access to the domain controllers in the internal environment.
    As for simply hosting one's own server in Azure, I just read an article that recommends against it:
    - Exchange uses alot of resources. You would need a rather expensive configuration.
    - You would still be responsbile for the updates.
    - Your VPN connection would have to be very reliable. Exchange is constantly querying the domain controllers / global catalogs. EDIT - I see you wrote "without a VPN" - well, that's not possible. Exchange will never work directly across the Internet
    like that.
    I can't find the link to the article but there are others that also advise against that option:
    http://paulrobichaux.wordpress.com/2014/05/15/exchange-server-and-azure-not-now-vs-never/
    Please mark as helpful if you find my contribution useful or as an answer if it does answer your question. That will encourage me - and others - to take time out to help you.

  • Connect By Without Prior

    Hi,
    In 2005, this link (AskTom) discussed connect by without prior and Tom Kyte said:
    "I shall file a documentation bug to have the documentation updated to accurately reflect reality."In 2007 11g was released and Oracle 11g doc states:
    * In a hierarchical query, one expression in condition must be qualified with the PRIOR operator to refer to the parent row.
    PRIOR is most commonly used when comparing column values with the equality operator. (The PRIOR keyword can be on either side of the operator.) PRIOR causes Oracle to use the value of the parent row in the column. Operators other than the equal sign (=) are theoretically possible in CONNECT BY clauses. However, the conditions created by these other operators can result in an infinite loop through the possible combinations. In this case Oracle detects the loop at run time and returns an error.But connect by without prior is still allowed in 11g

    Tom saw it as a bug in the documentation because of the way that Oracle allows connect by without prior to be used.
    I know some people who still argue that the documentation says you shouldn't do a connect by without a prior and that it will be unsupported, but...
    a) In 10.1.0.2 if you did "select rownum from dual connect by rownum <= 10" it would actually return 11 rows and this was "corrected" in 10.2 so that it returned 10 rows. Why would Oracle correct something that they didn't support?
    b) I think the key thing is to try and understand what is being said by the documentation...
    In a hierarchical query_, one expression in condition must be qualified with the PRIOR operator to refer to the parent row.
    A hierarchical query is where you want to refer to a parent row, but are we doing that with our "select rownum|level from dual connect by rownum|level <= X" statements that don't have a PRIOR in them? I would consider it that we are not asking for a "hierarchical" query but are in fact just asking for it to connect to itself, therefore creating a loop, while the loop condition holds true.
    In fact, if you try and use PRIOR with rownum or level you get...
    SQL> ed
    Wrote file afiedt.buf
      1  select rownum
      2  from dual
      3* connect by rownum = prior rownum + 1
    SQL> /
    connect by rownum = prior rownum + 1
    ERROR at line 3:
    ORA-00976: LEVEL, PRIOR, or ROWNUM not allowed here
    SQL>which is actually telling you, in no uncertain terms, that if you are going to use PRIOR then you can't use level or rownum, and conversely, if you are going to use level or rownum then you can't use PRIOR.
    This would therefore indicate that it is expected behaviour and it is just the documentation that is worded badly and often taken wrongly.
    ;)
