Is CS5 a good edit program to edit mpeg-4 AVC/H.264 with?

I always used adobe premiere pro 2 to edit DV. But now i've bought a new HD camera so i'm searching for a good program to edit my movies with. Right now I have to convert my HD movies in elements 7 and transfer it to adobe, but the result is very poor, time consuming and frustrating.
I'm about to buy a new computer and also a new edit program. But is CS5 a good choice? Is it possible to capture or transfer my movies of mpeg4 AVC/H.264 straight into a project in CS5? is there anybody out there who already uses this kind of codec for projects in CS5?
Monique.

Thanks a lot, I will check this section.
Can you also give me information about the quality when burning
(H.264) projects from CS5 on DVD?
Or do I have to use a blue ray recorder to avoid looking at unstable/jerky
images?

If you get a fast enough computer, you should be fine. Check out the

help make the most of Premiere.

im new to mac... here is my question. I hve a jvc mpeg hard drive video camera. What sort of program do i need so my mac can edit and burn these mpeg's into a dvd with chapters.. menus.. etc Thank you

iMove can Import some types of mpeg file directly - File/Import menu
If that doesn't work check out Mpeg StreamClip or DropDV
You can then use iMovie or iDVD to create discs.

Hi I have a question about shooting in Raw with my Canon EOS 6d.
I'm in the process of learning photography and my goal was to start shooting in raw.
I have Photoshop CS5. When I tried to edit my images in raw I received an error message stating, "The photoshop camera raw plug-in did not recognize the format. If these files are from a camera, you may need to update your camera raw plug in."
In researching the issue I read that to edit in raw you need a camera model requirement of at least 7.3 which only works with CS6. My version of CS5 is 6.0.0.205. Being new to all this I see that my options are to upgrade to CS6 or convert by using DNG converter and paying a monthly fee. Two things I know nothing about and don't know which is would be more beneficial.
I'd appreciate any advise on which route to go and how upgrade and what it may cost. THANKS in advance!

In researching the issue I read that to edit in raw you need a camera model requirement of at least 7.3 which only works with CS6.
That is correct. Your camera was first supported by Camera Raw 7.3. Camera Raw 7.3 will not work with CS5. You need CS6 or CC.
Being new to all this I see that my options are to upgrade to CS6 or convert by using DNG converter and paying a monthly fee. Two things I know nothing about and don't know which is would be more beneficial.
I'd appreciate any advise on which route to go and how upgrade and what it may cost.
It all depends on your preferred workflow and your budget.
Using the DNG converter is free. There is no monthly fee. You use the converter to convert all Raw files from the EOS 6D to DNGs then edit the DNGs in CS5. That's an extra step every time - every photo. Some people don't like the extra step. Others don't mind.
Camera raw, DNG | Adobe Photoshop CC
Or you can upgrade to CS6 (non-Cloud) and pay the upgrade fee
    Creative Suite 6
Or join the Cloud and pay the monthly fee
Or join the Photoshop Photography Program (US9.99/month) and get PS CC+LR

  • How do I change the default external editing program in Lightroom 5?

I have Photoshop CS3 and CS5 Extended on my computer. CS3 is the default external editing program Lightroom 5 chose to use to open files during initial setup, which causes selections such as "Open as Smart Object or Merge to Panorama" to be grayed out. How can I change the default to CS5 Extended, short of removing the CS3 version on my system? Thanks for you help!

  • Pro Video Editing Programs Alternatives for Final Cut

Hey I like to shot and edit movies in my spare time and Ihave a 2006 Macbook and I've tried to install Final Cut Pro X and Final CutStudio 3 only to find unsucessfully that my computer doesn't support them. So Myquestion Are there any good video editing program out there besides the FinalCut Series and Imovie which I have?

You may want to look at Avid's Media Composer. Our facility uses Adobe products. For editing, we're currently using Final Cut Studio 3. At the moment, we're "waiting it out" for the next best choice.

  • FCP Project File & other Editing programs

G'day, I apologise if this has been brought up earlier but this is a question I've had for a while.
FCP projects obviously maintain the file extension .fcp for the file projects.
My question is can FCP open, use and edit other file projects such as those from Windows Movie Maker or Vegas which have extensions .wmm and .veg respectively?
And can those other editing programs such as Vegas open and operate FCP project files?
I'm currently operating from a university computer with the latest FCP software (FCP5) available.
    All answers are greatly appreciated.
Final Cut Pro 5   Other OS
      Other OS

I've never tried, but I'm 99% sure you cannot simply open a project file from another program, and have FCP read it, and vice versa. Such things are not common practice among most applications (as it would require Apple licensing proprietary technology to competitors).
There are however, ways to do this. There is a plugin for Final Cut called Automatic Duck that provides import options between pro apps like FCP, Avid, After Effects, Combustion, etc. However, its not free, and would most likey not support an app like Vegas, and certainly not Windows Movie Maker.
The other way to do it is to utilize an Edit Decision List (EDL), which is a textual summary of all your edits and sequences in the project, and importing this along with your clips may allow another program to rebuild your project. I've never really needed to use one before, but I know FCP is capable of importing and exporting them (I would assume it uses XML). I have no idea how well EDLs are supported in Vegas, and I would assume that there is no support for them in WMM.
    Good Luck

  • IPhoto is the lamest photo editing program ever!

Is it just me or is iPhoto the lamest photo editing program ever? I had photoshop elements on my windows machine and was happy my new MAC came with iphoto & iMovie. Now that I have tried to use it I find it doesn't do much in the editing department. Infact Picasa has more editing features.

So instead of helping me out you insult my intelligence? You are pretty brave over the internet. So why does Apple advertise their computers coming with all the software you need.
iPhot: iPhoto gives you everything you need to do everything you want with your photos. Keep them organized and easy to find in lots of different ways. Use powerful yet simple editing tools to perfect each shot.
iPhoto isn't even a "good" photo organizer. Picasa is better at organizing & editing and is free. So don't blame the price.
So I guess if I were as smart as you guys, I would ASSume that iMovie doesn't really edit movies either, just organizes them right? This was the only thing I hated about moving to MAC. Apple Fan boys are very annoying.

  • User Friendly Image Editing Program?

OK, I have searched everywhere I can think of for a simple photo and image editing program. All I want to do is manually crop images into irregular shapes and make one image transparent over another, and not have it look spliced together when I get done. I have been using Appleworks draw, but these are two things it lacks. I have downloaded and tried dozens of applications, everything from Adobe trial version to freeware programs and none of it does any good. The complicated expensive applications make you spend two hours figuring out how to rescale an image and the cheap ones can't even do basic overlays. Is there some kind of image editing program out there that can do these things, but has a simple interface like IMovie or IPhoto?
    IMac duo-core 1.83ghz intel   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I use Photoshop Elements v2 with Tiger. Since it's old, you should be able to get a copy for $10-$20.

  • Best Program for editing quicktime movies

What is the best program for editing quicktime movies.
For example, I have several quicktime movies in the 4:3 aspect ratio, but the video is ment to be 16:9 so there is black on the top and bottom. I want to be able to crop out the black and make the video file a true 16:9 wide screen video becuase my laptop has a widescreen 16:10 aspect ratio lcd. And when playing back these videos, you end up with a couple inches of black on the top and bottom, and right and left, so a lot of screen space get's waisted. The only programs I have found so far that can make a 16:9 quicktime video have not supported the H.264 format, and only stetch the video to 16:9 rather then croping it, so the black remains on the top and bottom and the aspect ratio is off and every one looks short and fat becuase it's not in its native aspect ratio correctly.
Does anyone have any advice on what program I should use?
Also, does anyone have any recomendatiosn for how to convert wmv files to quicktime / itunes videos? I have found one program that does so, but it comes out very blocky and the audio is out of sync with the video by a good five seconds.
    Thanks

MPEG Streamclip (free) can crop and Save As so you wouldn't need to add any new compression to the existing files.
The make a Windows version now (it used to be Mac only).
No tips on converting WMP files but you'll find dozens of solutions in the iPod Discussions pages.

  • So then - do most people use other programs to edit thier photos?

After hours of reading on this discussion forum - which is incredibly informative and useful - and others, it seem that a lot of people use Aperture for its management abilities (I know, DAM) and not as much for its editing abilities. (Perhaps its intended function?) Is this accurate? Is it intended to be a compliment to <insert you favoite photo editor title here> rather than a replacement?
It seems to be far too powerful an editing tool to simply use to structure my files - but send them out to an editing program when I want to edit.
Again, I am a newbie and am probably missing something, but as an example using the sharpen edge tool I cannot seem to apply much sharpening at all even maxing the sliders. In PS (I am not trying to cause I debate, it just happens to be the program I have been using to this point) you can easily sharpen, over sharpen and completely distort the image beyond useful with tiny adjustments in the parameters. I have about a half a dozen presets as baselines in unsharp mask (normal, reduce haze, portraits etc) that I start with and change slightly per photo. I wanted to create the same structure in Aperture, but it does not seem to have this ability - which I find strange because just about everything else I do in Aperture seems to have abilites way beyond my own and I find I am having difficulties with simple things, such as adjusting light levels.
    Any thoughts?
    As always, many thanks.

As has been noted by those wiser and better than I, "take the picture right, then you don't have to muck with it in the darkroom." There is, of course, a lot of truth in this but the digital image is another beast compared to film. I suspect that I handle about 90%+ of my images directly in Aperture. I have a number of plug ins (SilverFX, Vevezia, Photomatix HDR, and Noise Ninja) and I link to an external editor. Most of what needs correcting, improving, focusing, etc., can be done within Aperture particularly now that the plug ins are 64 bit. Still, I have a full copy of Photoshop (actually CS5) as there are things that can be done in PS that I don't know how to do any where else. (There are also hundreds of things that PS can do that I haven't learned!)
So the answer to your question: depends on how deep you like to get into the image. I liked the dark room in the old days (dating myself here) so I have found the amazing power of a program like PS to be irresistible. YMMV.
    Robert
A few years back I was able to get Adobe to switch me to the Mac version of CS2 by paying the upgrade fee difference. Won't hurt to ask. There was a bit of song and dance routine (faxes and stuff to prove I had the Win version) but it worked out. Worth a try but recommend you learn Aperture and its available plug ins first.

  • Photo editing programs?

At the moment i am using iphoto and I am searching for a new photo editing program that enables you to edit and change the photo but also keeps the original. Also with iphoto you can crop the image but it wont save, it will revert back to the original size, why is this and are there other photo editing programs for mac os x available?

After applying the Crop you must click on the Crop button before clicking on the Done button.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Photo editing program suggestions?

I need to add a photo editing program to my Macbook Pro. Is Photoshop Elements a good choice? I know it has video friendly presents to work in non-square pixels. The Windows version I've seen wants to catalog every bit of media on your computer, could this cause a problem with Final Cut Express every time you create a render file or something?
I've also heard about The Gimp, a free program that you download in pieces. Is it hard to configure? Probably no non-square pixels?
    Any other suggestions?

Elements on the Mac is a very good editor for the price. It's different from the Windows app in that it's not a manager, just an editor. It can be used in conjunction with it's Bridge, iPhoto or Aperture as an editor for their organising capabilities.
Someone once described Elements as 85% of the power of Photoshop for 15% of the price.
What's missing? Some bells and whistles, sure, but principlally CYMK support - of no interest to video editors

  • Photo editing program

Am new MacBook Pro user looking for a god photo editing program - I used Paint Shop Pro on my former laptop and really liked it. Don't really want PhotoShop but not sure what would be the best one to use on my MBP.

    Hi d,
IIRC, Photoshop Elements has a good trial period, and then if you like it and need to use it enough, it should be worth it to purchase.
