Is CS6 generally slower than 5?

I'm having slow issues with photoshop 6.  I'm a professional photoshop user since 1993, work on 10-15gb files with 100+ layers.  I use a MacPro 2x2.26ghz quad core intel xeon.   32GB Ram.  Just did a clean install of lion onto an 500gb SSD hard drive.  All my files are SATA connected with a 6TB Raid 0.   Nothing except for photoshop, bridge and Capture one is installed on this machine.  I experience delays on all fronts.  even trying to silhouette a 279mb 2 layer file is painfully slow today.
I've disabled graphics processor
Memory usage is set to 70% (21772mb)
cache levels 4
cache tile size 1024
automatically save recovery information every 10 minutes (how much does this slow the system down?
For ultimate performance, am I better of going back to CS5?

In answer to your subject question, no - it's equal or a bit faster for just about everything I've tested it with.
Have you updated to Photoshop 13.0.1 and Bridge 5.0.1.21 (via Help - Updates)?
Have you tried running it without Bridge (keeping in mind Bridge is set to auto-start under some conditions)?

  • ACR processing in CS6 much slower than CS5

A big advantage of hosting ACR in 64 bit CS5 vs in bridge was that then ACR would process multiple images at once when saving them to jpg which would reduce processing times by 30% or more. For some reason this doesn't seem to be the case with CS6. I just did a short test and CS6 won't process multiple images at once, and was 33% slower than CS5 at saving a batch of 5dmkii images to jpeg.
Has anyone else noticed this? Hopefully this limitation is due to beta status and the final release of ACR will be fully optimized for 64bit processing.

It seems strange that their is hardly any improvement in 64 bit cs6 speed vs 32 bit cs5.    I agree, gpu support for acr would great!

Bridge in CS5 was 32 bit only, and I observed the 32 bit converter as run by Bridge (or Photoshop 32 bit) wouldn't exercise all the cores, so the way I interpret your numbers is as follows:
    1.  ACR7 is 50% slower than its predecessor (34.25 seconds when run in Photoshop 64 bit vs. 22.59).
    2.  Bridge is now 64 bit, so you're running the same code in both cases, which is why you're seeing essentially the same number in Bridge as Photoshop.

  • CS6 Much Slower than CS5.5

I installed Premiere Pro CS6 for Mac and moved an existing project from CS5.5.  The clips are all After Effects compositions, some with elaborate effects. I imported them into AE6 from AE5.5 prior to bringing them into CS6 so they would interact between AE6 with PP6 via Dynamic Link.
CS6 is painfully slow on my machine. Even just dragging a clip from the Project window to the timeline results in a spinning beachball that stays on screen for over a minute before allowing me to position the clip. Playing the timeline also takes forever. Rendering the work area is slow too -- and that's when it works. Some clips render for a while and then crash out with an "unknown" compiling error.
I'm running a Mac Pro from 2011, 6 Core, 32 GB RAM, stock ATI Radeon card, Raid-0 across 3 2TB 7200 RPM drives and a solid state 200MB drive for software and some scratch files. Latest versions of both OSX and Premiere Pro.
The reason I upgraded to CS6 was to gain speed. So far CS5.5, set up in pretty much in identical fashion, was way faster and less problematic.
Can anyone offer advice?  I've scoured this forum and the web and have come up empty.
    Thanks!
    Gene

I have a 25.GHz Core i7 MBP late 2011 with latest OSX and 16GB of RAM.
Just bought CS6 expecting more after a glorious year of using CS5.5.
I HATE IT. Have had all of the problems listed above and more. With the program monitor choppiness, I actually have to quit out of the program and re-open to get it to resume normal playback. I am mostly working with 7D and HVX video files which I have never had any problems with in 5.5.
Other weird things that happen are in the project window. When I try to create a new bin I get the beach ball for 30 seconds to a minute. When I try to move clips from one bin to another, more beach ball.
When I quit the software, it closes the window and then hangs, forcing me to force-quit to close out.
What's the deal? My MBP is a beast and has no problems running the ENTIRE 5.5 creative suite all at once with minimal lag. I do particle effects in AE5.5 and preview playback at 1/2 resolution at almost full speed...
So why is Premiere CS6 sucking so badly? Honestly other than the Warp Stabilizer plug-in (which is AMAZING), there's no reason for me to use it. I'm switching back to 5.5 until Adobe can work these things out and I am lamenting it's suckiness to everyone who asks.

  • AE CS6 Far slower than 5.5 for some reason.

    Howdy..
    I have a fairly complex photo-collage comp in AE CS6. It's 1m long.
When I render with CS6, the estimated time is around 6 hours, however, if I 'save-as' a 5.5 project and render than with 5.5. the ETA is juat 2.25 hours...
Anyone else seeing this? It's on a 2 year old MacPro. 16GB Ram. Quatro 4000 card.
    Thanks!
    Best,
    Ben

  • Premiere CS6 slower than 5.5

We have recently migrate from CS 5.5 to CS6. We install Production premium in many PCs. (same hardware we used for 5.5.) and our editors realized that CS6 moves slower than 5.5.
They used to work very fast and sometimes they have to wait to CS6 to react. Sometimes is no more than 4 or 5 seconds but this is very annoying for someone who needs to keep fast rhythm to finish on time.
    We have already:
    - update drivers for gpu
    - updated premiere to 6.05
    Systems:
    PCs:
    - i7
    -24GB RAM
    -GPU Nvidia GTX 570
    -SSD Operating System
-RAID o for video + 2 more HD(1 tera each), for media cache and previews
This issue happends in all our machines.
We work with same kind of footage (mpeg 2) and same hardware and this issue, never happened in CS5.5.
Is there a way to fix it?
    Thank you

I know this is always an option, but the idea is to find out if there is a solution for this in CS6, so we can take advantage of the improvements of this version. (CC is not an option for us right now)

  • Why is InDesign CC significantly SLOWER than CS6?

InDesign CC is noticeably SLOWER in almost every aspect and functionality than is the latest version of InDesign CS6 on my computer (OSX 10.9.4, 2.66 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, 27 inch iMac). I have stopped using Indesign CC and now only use CS6 to create and adjust documents.
Can any staff or special users in this forum detail ADOBE's understanding or response to complaints of this nature?
This situation does not bode well for me, given the coerced direction Adobe is taking users of its creative suite (towards cloud based subscription systems).

I rebuilt all my preferences and that led to some kind of discovery. Starting InDesign CC everthing works ok (though the drawing tools are slightly slower than in CS6, creating a new page for example is much faster). All the following things mainly have an impact on drawing tools (pen tool, rectangle tool etc. placing multiple images is also affected but maybe because an image frame has to be drawn). After activating the application frame things start to slow down a bit. If I open the collapsed panels on right side things get slowed down again and the biggest hit on performance is evident when the information panel is open.
I wanted to record a screen-capture again but this is so slow that it does not represent the bug accurately. And I guess this has something to do with the user interface because all is linked to interface actions (application frame, opening/collapsing panels, showing the information panel)
Once again my system specs (when experiencing the issues half of my RAM was still free with Safari, Mail and InDesign CS6 and CC open for comparison):
    InDesign CC (German)
    Mac OS 10.8.4
    MacBook Pro 17inch
    8 GB RAM
    2.66 GHz Intel Core i7

  • In CS6, JavaScript Running MUCH Slower than ActionScript

    Hi All,
I am finding that in CS6, JS code runs MUCH slower than ActionScript code. I don't want to double-post here - Full details may be found where I posted them in the InDesign Scripting forum at  - CS6 JavaScript Running Much Slower than ActionScript, before I realized that this forum might be more appropriate.
The basic gist of it is that I had a Flex/ActionScript Extension, which I obviously needed to start converting to JavaScript in advance of the next version not supporting ActionScript. I converted 20,000 lines of my business logic code from ActionScript to JavaScript (grrr...) - only to find that it now runs 5 times slower than it did in ActionScript.
What has been the experience of others who have converted large Extensions from ActionScript to JavaScript?
I would greatly appreciate any and all suggestions.
    TIA,
    mlavie

  • InDesign CC responds slower than CS6 - any advice?

I've been using a trial of InDesign CS6 which ran smoothly for a month. Today I upgraded to InDesign CC.
I've only been using it today but there are detectable and annoying pauses when performing the following actions
    Placing and relinking files
    Exporting to PDF
    Creating new files
    Save as...
    Anyone else experiencing this?
    Using Windows 7 Ultimate
    16GB Ram
    64 bit OS
I have 250 GB SD drive for my software and a 3TB drive for my files.
I'm not great with the hardware so if I need to supply any other info please let me know!
    Thanks
    Ruth

  • Generally speaking import is slower than export. Right ?

    DB version : 11.2, 10.2
Because of the extra validations like Foreign key, ...etc, , Isn't import usually slower than export ?
If yes, By what percentage will it be slower for a regular dump which has 'regular' tables without LOB, CLOB.. etc ?

I can not think of any situation where export will be faster. Export just reads the dictionary and grabs information. Import needs to create all of the objects. For indexes, it needs to build the indexes, which can take lots of time.
As for how much more time... it is pretty much impossible to say. If you have indexes, it could take a long time to build indexes, it really depends on what objects are in the dump file. If you have statistics of subpartitioned tables, recreating all of those statistics could take a long time. How busy is your system/db. If not too busy, you could try the parallel option of Data Pump to use multiple processes to get the job done a little faster.

  • Help Please! Video is running slower than audio . Premiere CS6

    Hello everybaody.
I have that frustrating problem whit video runing slower than the audio. When i choose a video clip from my Phone for example(format 1980-1080 mp4 file)
It starts normal and after 4-10 seconds the video starts running slower and is getting me crazy. I thought it could be because of my hardware performance if its
not that good but actually I have a good notebook (Asus G74sx). It does happen whit most of the video files i tried but no all. Some video files are running good.
I am new to this video editing world so guys please help me and give me an advice what to do ? Its really annoying me. I have also exported some of these videos
that the picture is slower than the voice and after the export all the play programmmes are playing the same way. But when i play the videos before i touch them with
the Premiere they are running absolytely whit no problem.
Thank you for your time , and i am looking forward to hear from you guys.

  • Why is Thunderbolt so much slower than USB3?

I'm considering two different drives for Time Machine purposes. Both are LaCie. Either of these:
    - Two Porsche 9233 drives, 4 TB each
    OR
    - A 2Big Thunderbolt drive, 8 TB, which I would configure as RAID 1 (a mirrored 4 TB volume)
My question is this: I've viewed both of these product pages via the Apple Store, and I noticed that LaCie's information for the Thunderbolt drive makes it a lot slower than the USB drives. Meaning: They say that the 2Big Thunderbolt drive maxes out at like 427 MB/s, whereas the Porsche USB drives max out at 5 GB/s. Why is this? Isn't Thunderbolt supposed to be a lot faster than USB (any iteration)?

Not an easy question, short of a whole lot more detail on the construction of those two devices.   You're likely going to need to look at the details of the drives and probably at some actual data.   You're really looking for some real benchmark data that you can compare, in other words.    Particularly which (likely Seagate) drives are used in those (IIRC, Seagate bought LaCie a while back), and what the specs are.
The hard disk drives themselves are a central factor, where the drive transfer rate is a key metric for big transfers (and that can be based on drive RPM as much as anything, faster drives can stream more data, but they tend to need more power and run hotter), and access (seek) time for lots of smaller transfers (faster seeks mean faster access, so good for lots of small files scattered around).  Finding the details of the drives can be interesting, though.  I've seen lots of cheaper disks that spin very slowly, which means that they can have nice-looking transfer times out of any cache, but then... you... wait... for... the... disk... to... spin.
The device bus interfaces can also vary (wildly) in quality.   I've seen some decent ones, and I've seen some USB adapters that were absolute garbage.   Some devices have decent quantities of cache, too.  Others have dinky caches, and end up doing synchronous transfers to hard disks, and that's glacial compared with memory speeds.
One of your example configurations also features RAID 1 mirroring, which means that each write is hitting both disks.   The writes have to pass through a controller that can do RAID 0 mirroring, and that can write the I/O requests to both drives, and that can read the data back from (if it's clever) whichever of the two drives is best positioned in related to the sectors you're after.   If it's dumb, it won't account for the head positions and drive rotation and sector target.   Hopefully the controller is smart enough to correctly deal with a disk failure; I've met a few RAID controllers that weren't as effective when disks had failed and the array was running in a degrated mode.  In short, RAID 1 mirroring is a reliability-targeted configuration and not a performance configuration.  It'll be slower.  Lose a disk in RAID 1 mirroring, and you have a second disk with a second copy.    If the controller works right.
If you want I/O performance without reliability, then configure for RAID 0 striping.   With that configuration, you're reading data from both disks.  But lose a disk in a RAID 0 striping configuration and you're dealing with data recovery, at best.  If the failure is catastrophic, you've lost half your data.
But nobody's going to make this choice for you, and I'd be skeptical of any specs outside of actual benchmarks, and preferably benchmarks approximating your use.  Reliability is another factor, and that's largely down to reputation in the market; how well the vendor supports the devices, should something go wrong.  One of the few ways to sort-of compare that beyond the reviews is the relative length of the warranty, and what the warranty covers; vendors generally try to design and build their devices to last at least the length of the warranty.
Yeah.  Lots of factors to consider.  No good answers, either.  Given it's a backup disk, I'd personally tend to favor  eliability and warranty and less about brute speed.
Full disclosure: no experience with either of these two devices.  I am working with Promise Pegasus Thunderbolt disk arrays configured RAID 6 on various Mac Mini configurations, and those support four parallel HD DTV video streams with no effort.  The Pegasus boxes are plenty fast.  They're also much more expensive than what you're looking at.

  • How Can I Improve Mavericks Performance (much slower than 10.8)?

When I upgraded to OS 10.9, I immediately saw a significant slower performance than with 10.8 or 10.7 (which I had been using for about two years). One big difference was a delay with the boot disc thrashing a lot when I started the computer and when I launched any app. That is, after starting my Mac Pro (2008), once the windows are all visible, there is a 30+ second delay (with the boot disc thrashing a lot) before it responds. A very similar thing happens when I launch any app. For example, when I launch iPhoto, after the photos appear, it takes 30+ seconds before it reponds to any mouse clicks. Under 10.7 and 10.8, there was about a 5 second delay (which I always thought was Faces doing its thing). This disc thrashing and delay before the app will respond happens with every app (Word, iMovie, Disc Utility, etc.) These delays never occured under 10.7 or 10.8.
A few people on the Apple Support forum suggested I run EtreCheck and remove various apps that they said could cause a problem with the OS. I removed every app they suggested, but I do not see any difference in performance. In my opinion, OS 10.9 has implemented something new that is causing my Mac Pro to run much slower.
I just ran a Safe Boot (using shift key while starting). I don't see any difference.
    I would appreciate any advice.

First, back up all data immediately unless you already have a current backup. If you can't back up, stop here. Do not take any of the steps below.
    Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
Run Software Update. If there's a firmware update, install it.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the View menu or the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for User, System, and Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the Memory tab. What value is shown in the bottom part of the window for Swap used?
Next, select the Disk tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in andWrites out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • New MacBook Pro slower than a snail

I have just upgraded to a new MacBook, and am having speed issues, first with Mountain Lion and now with Mavericks. It seems as though almost all operations, even selecting a file in the Finder, bring up the beach ball of death, and opening applications like Keynote or Pages can take 30 or more seconds. I am not here to knock Apple, although as a 20+ year user I am disappointed since this is the first time I have ever encountered anything lke this, but I am lost as to where to begin to correct this. Below is the latest EtreCheck output -any suggestions will be gratefully received.
