Is Direct2D (re. GPU) installed on my computer ?

My computer: Thinkpad T-520, purchased from Lenovo in Feb. of 2012.
O.S.: Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit
On "patch Tuesday" Feb. 2014, Microsoft released a security patch re.: "Direct2D Memory Corruption".
This patch has not appeared in my list of Windows Updates for the month of Feb. or March.
I discovered it because every day I check the list of vulnerabilities (for all major companies) that are published
Mondays through Fridays by Secunia.
I have already proven that Windows Update is not correct 100% of the time: I refer you to its inability
to provide to my computer the long-standing update for "Microsoft XML Core Services". See the article
"Why Microsoft XML Core Services is the most exposed program on private PCs for 11 months running",
Oct. 31, 2013, on the website of Secunia (an IT security/Vulnerability Assessment/Patch Management
company) at "http://secunia.com/blog/why-microsoft-xml-core-services-is-the-most-exposed-program-on-private-pcs-f...
In this case, my computer was factory-installed with MSXML Service Pack 2 .
"But in the case of MSXML, patches are only offered for MSXML Service Pack 3. Since older MSXML Service Packs are considered End-of-Life, users are not being offered patches as they normally would."
If not for my checking of Secunia's reports, I would not have discovered that my computer had a security hole. (The link to the article is still present on Secunia's home page.)
The Microsoft advisory does not mention any provisos or exceptions regarding its applicability to
computers with W~ 7. My factory-installed Lenovo User Guide makes mention of "Direct3D", not 2D.
My search of the Lenovo website (Support, Forums, and overall) yields a few references to Direct2D,
and alot of references to Direct3D, but nothing specific to whether or not I have one, both or neither on my
specific computer. An article at a Mozilla Firefox Support webpage suggests that the browser's "Use hardware acceleration WHEN available" box is ticked (check-marked) by default WHEN Firefox detects that one's O.S. has the requisite software and/or hardware. The box is NOT ticked in my case.
The circumstantial evidence suggests that Direct3D, not Direct2D, is installed on my computer. However, I would rather be certain.
SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTION:
In my Internet Explorer 9 (32-bit)'s Tools / Internet Options / Advanced / Acceleration Graphics, the option
"Use softw. rendering instead of GPU rendering" is un-ticked (not check-marked) by default. Once I get the security
update issue resolved, should I choose the "GPU rendering" option ?
Thank-you for your help in resolving this question.

The second ling I gave you stated:
"Only the content that is stored in the backup will be restored back to the device after the update is complete. Attempting to do this may result in iTunes alerting you with the following message:"\"
Since the apps are not part of the backup the iTunes makes, the apps will not be on the iPOd after the update if the apps are not in the iTunes llibrary.

after installing maverick my computer is very slow, what can I do?

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
    Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|timed? ?o' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
Run Software Update. If there's a firmware update, install it.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the View menu or the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for User, System, and Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the Memory tab. What value is shown in the bottom part of the window for Swap used?
Next, select the Disk tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in andWrites out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

Some MacBook Pro versions cannot be upgraded past 10.6.8; others are maxed out at 10.7.5. newer models can go all the way to 10.10. So it is important to know exactly what version you have--there may be close to 40 variants produced since the MB made its debut in 2006.
You can safely give us a snapshot of your model and its current config that will allow us to deternmmine your model and its upgrade potential, plus show it you have any software that may impede any upgrades. Please download and install this free utility:
    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
It is secure and written by one of our most valued members to allow users to show details of their computer's configuration in Apple Support Communities without revealing any sensitive personal data.
Run the program and click the "Copy report to clipboard" button when it displays the results. Then return here and paste the report into a response to your initial post. It can often show if any harmful files/programs are dragging down your performance.
Remember that, on leaving OS10.6.8, you lose the ability to run older softare written for older PowerPC Macs (yours in Intel-based). Programs such as Office 2004 will no longer work (min of Office 2008 needed to work on newer OS versions), and AppleWorks will stop working completely

  • Quicktime and itunes wont install. I have never had quicktime installed on my computer before

I recently bought an ipod touch 4g and realized that I needed itunes to activate it. After downloading itunes it wouldn't install, no error messages or anything, when I click on the installer it just doesn't do anything.
After downloading several versions of itunes (older versions) I finally found one that started to install. Then it told me that I need Quicktime on my computer in order for it to install. So I downloaded the latest version of quicktime and had the same problem, when I click on the installer, nothing happens. I tried downloading older versions of quicktime but still had the same problem.
I have never had quicktime or itunes installed on this computer before, so I know that it isn't an older version of the program hidden in my computer that is preventing the installation from happening.
My computer is running on Windows 7. I know that there wasn't a problem with downloading the software, the files weren't corrupted or anything. There are no error messages, the software doesn't even partially install. When I click on the installer, nothing happens. I have tried running the programs as an administrator and that doesn't change anything.
I have tried so many different things, but can't remember everything that I tried. Yesterday I spent nearly 10 hours trying to sort this out because I was determined to get my ipod running. I only stopped when my internet credit ran out and today after buying some more, I am trying again. Please help.

I appreciate the quick response, thank you for that.
One thing I did try was windows cleanup utility and searched through the program files for all apple software, but had none. I even deleted the temp files on my computer, and on my internet browser, but nothing happened.
One thing that I didn't think of was deleting the installation files in my downloads folder, pretty silly of me but I didn't think it would make a difference. I also spent about 2-3gig on downloads yesterday and didn't want to delete the files but as a last resort I did and emptied my recycle bin, then downloaded a fresh copy of Quicktime and finally it installed!
Now I am in the process of downloading a fresh copy of iTunes, the download hasn't finished yet so I haven't had a chance to install it yet but I have a much better feeling about it this time after deleting all the old installation files from my downloads folder. If Quicktime worked after that, I am sure iTunes will.
I can't believe it was something so simple as deleting the installation files in my downloads folder and emptying the recycle bin. I had seriously gone through my entire computer looking for any little file that was related to Quicktime or iTunes. I didn't even think of the two most obvious places. I spent so much time and credit downloading multiple files and my computer even got a virus when trying to download a copy from an unauthorized source, I had no problem getting rid of the virus, but struggled with Quicktime and iTunes, that is why I got so frustrated! I feel like an idiot now :-P
Thank you for your help. I still havent installed iTunes yet, so fingers crossed. I think it will work now though.

  • Servers where patches will not install automatically or manually, Live updates are broken and when checking installed updates shows "NO UPDATES ARE INSTALLED ON THIS COMPUTER" SFC \SCANNOW will not run

Hello, (Bit of a long one but please read)
We have 3 servers in same physical location and server OU etc that are exhibiting the exact same behaviors (we have server servers in this location that are not), as above theyt are all W2008 R2 SP1 and all built from the same standard
image we use on hundreds of other computers, they have also been in production for different amounts of time and we started to see this behavior at different times with them: (Its odd they are all in the same site where there are also several other servers
that are not effected, there must be a link ? )
These servers are all missing several patches when checking our internal tool that reports from IBM endpoint management that we use to deliver patches (they are not all missing the exact same patches some ore or less than other), although
SCCM (we used SCCM to deliver patches until around 6 months ago) and IBM EM are both running (some ptches hark back to the SCCM Delievry days) they are not patching and when attempting to patch manually by downloading the exact patch coresponding to the fixlet
ID and the KB , the stanbdalone installer starts and after some time you receive an error message “The update is not applicable to yoru computer”. Windows update returns error 80070006 for all of the servers.
it is worth noting that other applications and products also using the .MSU extension will insatll so it is not a problem with the installer service.
The above led me to think a corrupt patch may have stopped the sequence of patching so I then looked in “Programs and Features” => “Installed updates” and this is blank for all of them returening the message:
“NO UPDATES ARE INSTALLED ON THIS COMPUTER”.  (this I believe is a part of the fundamental issues and resolving this may resolve the patching)
Another issue is that if you run  “SFC /SCANNOW” It starts the scan and then returns: “Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation” (Also in safe mode and both from an elevated CMD and WMI is started as a service)
The all three are probably related so I think fixing the “SFC and NO UPDATES SHOWN” issues will resolve the first.
The things I have tried so far are:
Running : wmic qfe list full /format:htable > c:\updates.htm             Should produce a list of updates but instead returns :  No Instance(s) Available (this is not hopeful)
Fix: Ran the “SYSTEM UPDATE REDINESS TOOL” from  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
Result : Update Ran successfully but NO CHANGE
Fix: Ran the automated and manual fix “RESET WINDOWS UPDATE COMPONENTS” here :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058/en then undated windows update agent.
Result : All ran successfully and NO CHANGE
    Fix: Ran MBSA
Result : Runs successfully and then stays at “Done downloading security update information” (Log gives no obvious information)
Fix: Renamed the software distribution folder/restarted services (Various variations of this fix online, tried a few)
Result: Runs as described in article with new Software distribution folder being created,
    NO CHANGE
Fix: Create/Correct the  reg key for windows trusted installer located here HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Version (several articles relating to this and the above issues)
Result: the existing key was correct as should be from internal system information gathered , required in article.
Fix: Ran the “Windows update trouble-shooter”
    as here :
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/troubleshoot-problems-installing-updates#1TC=windows-7
Result:  It detected and fixed error’s but still no change.
The WMI Repository checks out on them all for both of the methods I know to verify “Get-wmiobject –list |measure” and ensure count is over 900 and also “C:\>winmgmt /verifyrepository” and the repository came back as “WMI Repository is consistent”. I guess
this is not hard evidence the WMI is OK, but these are the only methods I know.
I have also tried removing the server from its OU , running a GP Update and then rebooting and testing but to no avail (Bit of a longshot but tried to link the distinction between the three servers and the OU GP is one of them)
I have tried a few other articles registering .Dll’s etc , but I did not take a note of links as I was at the start of this and didn’t expect it to go so long so please reply with anything you see not above im happy to try again.
I have thought about removing SP1 and reinstalling it but this will require a major downtime and only possible if the backup files of SP1 have not been removed.
    Any help is apreciated !

    Hi,
Please try to rebuil the WMI repository.

  • What did I do wrong? I used to have iTunes installed on this computer and lost it when it crashed. No I can't get past a certain point in the installation point. I keep getting an error message stating that I need to verify that I have access to this file

Help!! What's going wrong here. I used to have iTunes installed on this computer but lost it when it crashed. I've tried re-installing it numerous times but I keep getting the same error message. "Error writing to file: C:\ProgramFiles\iTunes.Resources\es.lproj\iPadLicense.rtf. Verify that you have access to that directory." I know I have access to that directory because on a different computer I can sync my iPad and iPhone. What am I doing wrong? What do I need to go in and authorize or turn on? Any help greatly appreciated. Thank you.

That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

  • When I open InDesign files from our design team, the fonts don't show up even though I have them installed on my computer. How do I get it to recognize fonts I have installed?

I use my Adobe programs from the Creative Cloud. When our design agency sends me files, I open them and fonts I have on my computer aren't showing up when I open the file. Everywhere online it says I need to add the fonts to InDesign's font file, but since I'm working out of the Creative Cloud, I don't have that option. How do I get InDesign to recognize these fonts when I'm opening files from our agency?

ID sees fonts installed on your computer and contained in a Document Fonts folder in the same folder as the document, if one exists.
I don't really understand what you are saying about fonts you have installed not showing up. And cloud makes no difference -- all the applications and support files are installed on your hard drive.

  • How can I detect spyware or keylogger programs directly installed on my computer?

    Hello,
I have a serious problem. My ex had physical access to my MacBook Air and I believe he installed either spyware or a key logger program directly on my computer, as he had administrative access. It could be a program like WebWatcher or Spector Pro. There are a number of programs that allow someone to install this software by downloading it from the internet directly onto your computer.
Unfortunately, I'm a physician whose been involved in reaserch which has classified information on it. It never occurred to me that someone would do something like this, but I am very worried that he has installed something. I recently installed MacScan and Little Snitch to determine if anything was detected.
    MacScan Displayed the following:
Last Spware Scan Run on: Sat 4/26/14 01:15 am
Spyware Detected on Last Scan: 0
Total Spyware Detected in all Scans: 148
I'm unsure if what was detected by Mac Scan were simply cookies.
I also tried Linc Davis' suggestion and here are my results:

    CAN ANYONE HELP ME?
    Thank you so much.

I am adding information from Webwatcher's own site:
    Q. Is WebWatcher easy to use?
    A. Yes. WebWatcher is very easy to use and you can begin monitoring immediately without having to read a lengthy manual. Our web based interface is user-friendly and can be conveniently accessed from any computer in the world with an Internet connection.
    Q. How does WebWatcher compare to other monitoring software?
    A. It's the most powerful and intuitive tool on the market. As the only web-based program, WebWatcher ensures the security of your data while providing you with the flexibility to monitor any computer from anywhere in the world. While some products email data, email is NOT a secure means of transporting information. Anything sent by email is extremely vulnerable, and can be seen by dozens of people before it reaches its destination. WebWatcher, however, uses 128-bit encryption guaranteeing the safety and security of your information.
    Q. Is WebWatcher PC or Mac compatible?
    A. WebWatcher is PC compatible, as well as Mac OS X compatible.
    Q. Is WebWatcher truly invisible?
    A. Absolutely! WebWatcher is 100% invisible. It doesn't run as a service, it doesn't appear in the list of running processes and there are no visible files that can be seen. Not only does WebWatcher work invisibly, but it's also friendly with all known firewall software and hardware allowing you to gather the information you need without raising any red flags.
    Q. How will I know WebWatcher is working?
    A. Just login to your secure online account to see the recorded data. Or you can enter the hotkey sequence on the monitored computer to view the WebWatcher status panel.
    Q. If I buy WebWatcher now, how soon will I receive the software?
    A. Immediately. Within minutes you'll receive a confirmation email that contains the username and password needed to download WebWatcher.
    Q. How do I install WebWatcher?
    A. Within minutes of completing your purchase, you'll receive an email with a link to the Setup Wizard. Just follow the onscreen instructions. Once the Setup Wizard is complete you'll receive a link to download the software. Important: you can complete the Setup Wizard from any computer, but the SOFTWARE MUST BE INSTALLED ON THE COMPUTER YOU WISH TO MONITOR.
    Q. Do I install WebWatcher on my computer or on the computer I want to monitor?
    A. The Setup Wizard can be installed on any computer, but the actual monitoring software must be installed on the computer you wish to monitor. Since WebWatcher is web based, you won't have to download the software onto the computer you'll use for viewing the recorded information.
    Q. Can I use different computers to check what's been recorded?
    A. Yes. Once the software is installed on the computer you wish to monitor, you can view the data from any computer in the world with Internet access.
    Q. Do WebWatcher icons or messages appear on my computer or on the monitored computer?
    A. No. Since WebWatcher runs invisibly, no icons or messages will appear on your computer or on the monitored computer.
    Q. Will WebWatcher email the recorded information to me?
    A. No. Email isn't secure for transmitting information. Any program that emails your data puts your private information at serious risk. WebWatcher offers the only web based monitoring system of its kind. We use 128-bit encryption to ensure the highest level of data security.
    Q. How do I retrieve the information that WebWatcher has recorded?
    A. Just log into our secure web based interface from any computer in the world with a standard web browser. Visit our demo to see actual screenshots of the program.
    Q. Will WebWatcher work on a laptop?
    A. Yes. WebWatcher will record computer activities and upload the data to your account when the monitored computer is reconnected to the Internet.
    Q. Does WebWatcher record emails?
    A. Yes. WebWatcher records emails and you'll be able to see the subject of the email, who sent it, who received it, the time and date email is sent and received, the contents and any attachments. Our email recorder is compatible with all of the most popular email programs including web based email.
    Q. Does WebWatcher record IMs?
    A. Yes. WebWatcher records instant messages. Our software is compatible with all of the most popular instant message programs including AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), MSN Messenger, Windows Messenger and Yahoo Messenger.
    Q. Does WebWatcher record websites visited?
    A. Yes. WebWatcher records websites visited. With just a click, you'll be able to visit the exact website visited and see what was viewed including searches performed.
    Q. Can WebWatcher block websites?
    A. Yes. WebWatcher can both block websites and record websites. When it encounters an Alert Word on a site, it can block that page or take a screenshot for later review. You can also block specific URL addresses.
    Q. Does WebWatcher have a keylogger?
    A. Yes. Our invisible key logger records every keystroke, even when a user is offline.
    Q. Do I need one license for every computer that I wish to monitor?
    A. Yes. An individual license is required for every computer that you wish to monitor. We offervolume discounts for multi-license purchases.

  • I have two versions of Lightroom installed on my computer, can I uninstall the older version?

While looking at the "Programs and Features" folder on my Windows 7 computer I discovered that I have two versions of Adobe Lightroom installed on my system. One is Lightroom 5.2, installed on 9/19/2013, and the other is Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.5 64-bit, installed on 7/5/2014
      - Can I uninstall the older version?
      - Will uninstalling the older version cause any problems with the newer version?
      - If yes to either question, is there anything I need to do before doing the uninstall (i.e. deactivating, etc.)
Any advice on how to correct this problem is gratefully appreciated.
PS; I have the same issue with Muse CC. See: I have two versions of Muse CC installed on my computer, can I uninstall the older version?

    Jim,
I thought it was odd that I had two versions of Lightroom installed as well. I have been able to track the issue back to an apparent "bug" in the Lightroom 5.2 update that installed a second version of Lightroom in addition to updating the existing version on my computers. At the time, I posted about it at Lightroom 5 installed twice on my laptop. While I never got an answer to my question, which was "Is this normal?" I did hear from others in the forum the experienced the same problem and had the same question. As time passed, later releases updated one of the two installations, but did not effect the second. Hence, two different versions of Lightroom 5 installed on the same computer.
Uninstalling the older version solved the problem. Thanks

Old computer died and I am trying to install Illustrator CS5 on new computer.
Last version I had before CS5 was/is Illustrator 10,which has been installed on new computer.
CS5 install says I need CS2,3 or 4 before installing 5, but old computer went directly from 10 to CS5.
How can I repeat this 10 to CS5 install?

It does not seem likely that CS6 was upgraded from version 10.  You might want to check your purchase history in your Adobe account to see if there is some missing link in the chain of purchases you made.
You can always try contacting Adobe support thru chat to see if they can find information or otherwise assist you in this matter.

... With the latest software updates for OS X, I've read that anti-virus software is largely superfluous for Mac. Any opinions to the contrary/negative experiences?
Almost. Anti-virus software is completely superfluous for Mac.
I have tested most of the commonly available Mac "anti-virus" products under controlled conditions. The only differences between them are their varying degree of worthlessness. Some are malicious and will corrupt your Mac. The vast majority of Mac problems reported on this site are the direct result of using such products.
OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Disable Java in Safari > Preferences > Security.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.
