is Disk Utility in OS X 10.8.2 the version of Disk utilit that controls the Fusion Drive on new Imacs?
No. Only those computers with a Fusion Drive installed will get the special version of Disk Utility. Do a Google search if you want to find out how to create a fusion drive with older systems, but I suggest it's a waste of time.

I am having trouble seeing my usb printer from my second gen airport extreme using the newest version of airport utility under Mountain Lion. UGH! And while I can see and network to my Canon IP5000 from my macbook pro running leopard, I can't from my new macmini running Mountain Lion. Any help would be appreciated in configuring my macmini so it can see the Canon IP5000 on the airport extreme. Don't want to "share" the printer from the laptop because that would be a cludge. Thanks ahead
I solved this one based on another post. Turned out I needed the snow leopard IP5000 driver. I had just copied over the leopard driver (I had saved my .dmg file) and installed that but it didn't work. So I downloaded the latest driver which turned out to be for snow leopard and I am guessing since it is 64bit that is why it worked and the leopard driver didn't. Anyway, I also had to hook the printer up via usb to the mac mini to get it to work locally before the O/S would see it over Bonjour via the airport extreme.

Hi. I bought PSE11 from the Apple online store and received the disk. Our new iMac hasn't got a dosk drive so I'd like to know if it's possible to downlaod the software from Adobe and use the product key on the box to activate it?
Thanks in anticipation!Download the trial from http://prodesigntools.com/photoshop-elements-11-direct-download-links-pse-premiere-pre.htm l

Does the Version make a difference?
Got "Spring Cleaning 9.0" for Mac.
Claims <Disk Utility> is damaged.
I reinstalled from the Tiger Disk <DU 10.5.4 on iMac DC>
Spring Cleaning gives it a clean bill of health.
What it replaced was <DU 10.5.8 on the iMac DC>
Is this version difference important?
What caused it to change from the original?
-wbajr tbc
eMac DVD iMac DC intel Mac OS X (10.4.10)Yes, it makes a difference. You should only use the
version of Disk Utility that was installed when you
installed the version of OS X you are currently
running. If you are running Tiger then you should be
using the version of DU that was installed by the
Tiger installer.
Any updates for DU would be made by an OS X updater
for the OS X you are using. For Tiger these would
be 10.4.1 through 10.4.10. The current Tiger version
of DU is 10.5.8. If would be safe to use on any
Tiger system.
I would suggest you not rely on Spring Cleaning. It
has a notorious reputation for being buggy and
unreliable. The best commercial tools to have are:
Disk Warrior
TechTool Pro
If you are concerned about system upkeep:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for
OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot
handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW
only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most
disk problems are caused by directory corruption;
Disk Warrior 4.0 is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro
provides additional repair options including file
repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk
defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.2 is Intel Mac
compatible; Drive Genius is
similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various
repair services provided. The current version,
1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are
scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly
period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM
only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If
this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to
download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW
PseudoAnacron, or Ana
cron that will automate the maintenance activity
regardless of whether the computer is turned off or
asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in
size, so unless you have a disk full of very large
files there's little need for defragmenting the hard
drive. As for virus protection there are few if any
such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the
computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus
protection software ClamXAV
. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus
software because of their potential for causing
problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware
utility TinkerTool
System that you can use for periodic maintenance
such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing
caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack
. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to
start in single-user mode from which you can run
Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance
routines from the commandline.
When you install any new system software or updates
be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions
beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software
updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size
to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a
bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone
using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can
also make and maintain clones with good backup
software. My personal recommendations are (order is
not significant):
1. Retrospect
Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
2. Synchronize! Pro
X (Commercial)
3. Synk
(Backup, Standard, or Pro)
4. Deja
Vu (Shareware)
5. PsynchX
2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
6. Carbon
Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal
Binary)
7. SuperDuper!
(Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup,
but cannot create bootable clones:
1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with
Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
2. Toast
3. Impression
4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also
backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD.
However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is
primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other
two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups,
only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to
CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab
FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance,
optimization, virus protection, and backup and
restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.

Very Helpful!
Thanks for the NFO.

Powerbook won't see the internal hard disk drive
I'm scratching my head with this one...
Seemed to me that my HDD had died, when I booted the computer I got a grey screen. I tried using Firewire Target Disk but the other computer connected didn't see any drive pop up, and when I booted from the installer CD the HDD did not show up in Disk Utility.
So I bought a new HDD and replaced it, but the problem was the same. I took what I thought was my dead HDD and put it in a 12" PB and it booted fine (and I was able to get my data off it that I'd thought I'd lost).
The problem I now have is that I don't know the reason why the HDD is not working. I ran the Apple Hardware test and the PB passed in both the basic and extended tests. The software reported that the mass storage (I presume that is the HDD) passed. I don't understand how it can pass when the HDD doesn't show up at all.
I'm hoping the problem might be the HDD ribbon connecting cable as that would be a 10 quid replacement, but with no feedback from the hardware test I haven't a clue.
Has anyone else encountered something like this and can they give me suggestions?Looks like your HD cable is the problem.
Apple hardware test will not tell you that the problem is your HD ribbon cable. But from my past experience with this kind of problem, I could tell you that most likely your problem located in the HD ribbon cable.
You've tried your HD in another unit and it is working fine and by process of elimination then the HD cable is next to be tried and if after you replaced hd cable the problem still persist then you can tell that the culprit is the logic board.

How do we get the raid to appear on the desktop in disk utilities
raid admin see's the xserve raid but won't mount to desktop!!!!!! how do we do that......we would appreciate any help. thanks.
It would help if you'd given some idea of what you've done so far, so that people don't waste time going through the things you've already done.
For example, you don't say whether or not you've connected the XServe RAID to a host system via the fiber channel cables. That's the first thing.
Have you yet configured the XServe RAID (using RAID Admin) with the array settings you want (e.g. RAID 5, RAID 1, one slice, 5 slices, etc., etc., etc.).
Out of the box, the XServe RAID will be configured for one RAID 5 array per side, so you might be OK there, but you might not.
Then does Disk Utility show the arrays at all?
If not, does System Profiler show the arrays connected?
If they are connected Disk Utility would usually show them, which might indicate the fiber channel cables are not connected.
If Disk Utility does show them, you might need to initialize the arrays. Once they're initialized they should appear on the desktop. -
How do I share a hard drive with the new iMac to load a disk from macbook pro
How do I share a hard drive with the new iMac to load a disk from macbook pro. I want to install office for Mac from a disk but dont know how to share har drive from macpro
thanksThe new iMac's don' t have DVD drives however almost all have a disk drive. The easiest method of installing MS Office for Mac on your new iMac is to download it from Microsoft and then input the code you received when you purchased your original license. Otherwise you can use the DVD drive on your MBP to install on your iMac, that feature is called Remote Disc. Instructions for Remote Disc can be found at:http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5287

5.4.2 of utility: "A newer version of AirPort Utility is required."
The Airport Utility for osx 5.4.2 pops up this warning when I try to configure the base station.
"A newer version of AirPort Utility is required.
This version of AirPort Utility doesn't support this Apple wireless device and might improperly configure the device if you continue to use it. Use the version of AirPort Utility that came on the CD with your Apple wireless device. Check www.apple.com/support/airport for the latest version of AirPort Utility."
Maybe I'm tripping but I believe 5.4.2 is the latest version?+So what do we do when someone has the newest Time Capsule (late 2009) but cannot find the install disc?+
You would need to call Apple customer support. Apple has not posted AirPort Utility 5.5 for download because...according to a "genius" at the Apple store....Version 5.5 is not fully compatible with earlier versions of the AirPort Extreme, Time Capsule and AirPort Express. -
External startup disks will not start with my new iMac
My external devices which are startup disks will not start when connected to my iMac, although it appears in the bootable drive selections after the chime sound, using the option (Alt) key. I get the bootable drive selections and when selecting it all I get is a gray screen with the apple logo and that is it. No matter how long I wait the start up does not happen. I am sure that the external device is not damaged because there is no problem to use it as a startup device when connected to my MacBook Pro.
Otherwise the devices work as they should. If I connect them to my iMac then they will appear on the desktop, etc. The only thing which does not work is that they cannot be used as startup disks, even though they work fine as startup disks if connected to my MacBook Pro.Based on your description it is very hard to tell what is going on.
You appear to have an i7 iMac. That model was delivered with Snow Leopard (10.6.x).
My guess is that your external disks may have a version of OS X that predates the version supplied with your new iMac. You cannot run an earlier version of OS X than what was delivered with your Mac. -
Time machine backups are failing. I've followed the instructions I found on the Time Machine troubleshooting page (http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html) but have gotten to where I don't know what to do next.
Sequence of events:
The main error message is always:
An error occurred while copying files. The problem could be temporary. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk.
Yesterday, I opened Disk Utility and verified the disk. Got this error:
Error: This disk needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD. Restart your computer, holding down the Command key and the R key until you see the Apple logo. When the OS X Utilities window appears, choose Disk Utility.
I ran Disk Utility and repaired the hard drive. Then I manually started the backup before going to bed, figuring it was going to take a long time to run. When I got up this morning, the backup had failed with the same "could be temporary" error. I checked the log, which says:

Does anyone know what the problem is here and what I should do?
Thanks,
TeryYou have repaired your boot drive (which is good) but have you repaired your time machine drive? I don't own a Time Capsule so I don't know if disk utility can operate on it. If it can, you should repair it as well. You may need to erase it and start a new backup. That happens to time machine volumes from time to time and is why people who are serious about their data never rely on a single source of backup.

1. Insert your Windows DVD in Optical drive. Disconnect any external storage.
2. Insert a USB2 Flash drive. This will be used to hold the BC drivers.
3. Start BCA. Check the options to download software and Install Windows. You do not need to download Windows. The BCA will download the BC drivers to the USB.

HT4718 FileVault 2, the Recovery System, and the use of Disk Utility
I have FileVault 2 turned on for my Lion-equipped Powerbook Pro. When booting from the Recovery System, however, the Disk Utility thereon cannot even verify the internal HD, much less repair anything. I am aware that this is due to the encryption, of course.
However, for external encrypted drives, all I need to do is enter the password to mount them. So is there something that one can do in order to get the Disk Utility on the Recovery System -- on this very same drive -- to recognize the main volume, in order to enable it to perform diagnostics?
Secondarily, if I put the Powerbook Pro into target mode, and connect it to another Mac (which I have not tried yet) will I be able to mount it from the other computer if (A) It is running Lion OSX or higher, and (B) I can provide one or more of the login passwords?
I am one who has always liked to keep my hard drives running smoothly (e.g using Disk Warrior, Drive Genius, Disk Utility...whatever). So this is a bit foreign to me to be unable to run at least basic diagnostics. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks. If you're talking about just the Recovery HD, you only need 1GB so use a 4GB USB thumb drive and the OS X Recovery Disk Assistant to create it.
If you're talking about the ML installer (installESD.dmg) use an 8GB USB thumb drive. -
Hi. Trying to connect iomega ext. HD. i have to reformat for Mac. When i plug in & go to Disk Utility, the external shows up and i'm supposed to click "partition". When i do, a box comes up saying ""Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility." I quit and relaunched, same results. After googling my question, i came up with this:
"Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility."
(Quitting and reopening Disk Utility does not help.)
The following also appears in Console log:
*** malloc[419]: Deallocation of a pointer not malloced: 0x290a410; This could be a double free(), or free() called with the middle of an allocated block; Try setting environment variable MallocHelp to see tools to help debug : for architecture i386 object: ./Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunes malformed object (unknown flavor for flavor number 0 in LC_UNIXTHREAD command 27 can't byte swap it)
Workaround
Quit Disk Utility.
From the Finder's Go menu, choose Go to Folder....
Type the following, then click OK: /Library/Receipts
Temporarily remove these iTunes receipts from /Library/Receipts (sort the folder alphabetically as a list):
iTunes.pkg
iTunes4.pkg
You can put them on the desktop, for example. Do not remove iTunesX.pkg or iTunes Phone Driver.pkg.
Open Disk Utility and repair disk permissions again.
Quit Disk Utility.
Put the removed iTunes receipts back in /Library/Receipts.
Note: This issue does not affect Disk Utility's verify or repair disk features.
All seemed good, for a moment, until, upon going back to Disk Utility after removing itunes4.pkg and putting on desktop (i did not have itunes.pkg to remove) the same thing was happening. When i highlite my iomega ext. on left of page, disk perrmissions is grayed and does not allow me to click on it. Same problem from the start. Can somebody please help me out here? That would soooo awesome. Thanx!i'm just scared i will do something wrong on my own and lose my data.
You shouldn't be scared of that, because you should already have backups. If you don't have backups, then backing up is the first priority.
Insert the Snow Leopard DVD and restart. When you hear the chime, hold down the C key and keep holding it until the Apple logo appears on the display. You should now see the language selection screen. Select your language, then choose Utilities > Disk Utility from the menu bar. In the Disk Utility window, select the external drive (not the internal). The drive may already have a data partition, in which case there will be another icon below the drive icon. Choose the drive icon, then select the Partition tab. Create a single partition with the default options (GUID partition table, Mac OS X Extended Journaled).
When the partitioning is done, select the startup volume on your internal drive in the DU window. Select the Restore tab. Drag the icon of the startup volume to the "Source" field. Then drag the icon of the newly-created volume on the external drive to the "Destination" field. Make sure you have this right. Then click the Restore button, and the data on your startup volume will be copied to the external drive. -
I have had several kernel panics on my iBook G4; the panic message shows up just after the desktop appears. Although the startup volume shows up in Startup Disk, the installation disk reports an error when I attempt an erase and install. Disk utility is unable either to erase or partition the hard drive. The hard drive shows up in disk utility, but the startup volume doesn’t HELP!!!
Do you have the original system discs that came with the iBook when it was new?
Which exact iBook model is it?
You can choose from this list:
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/index-ibook.html
Erasing the disc and installing Mac OS X 10.5 will result in loss of the other applications (such as the iLife applications) which came pre-installed on the iBook. -
when i did all that shows up in disk utility now is something called expansion and all my opitions are greyed out in the partation tab, it doesnt mount and idk what to do please help.

8gbs memI would try it on a PC and see if you can format it, then put it back on the Mac and try again. If it's not seen on a PC, then there's the strong likelihood that there's a hardware issue; either the bridge/chip set or the HD itself is dying/dead. There's also the small possibility that the cable is faulty, so I'd try a different cable too.
