Is DVD Dead?

The college classes I teach use FCP7.  I'm looking to migrate that to either FCPX or Premiere, and I'm trying to decide which direction to go in. One huge factor is that Apple has dropped DVDSP, so how is an X user supposed to author a DVD?  Premiere has Encore.  DVDs are important to my students. They put their reels on them -- in their world, with their markets, people view reels on DVD.
So I wanted to gather your opinions.  Is DVD dead?  In four years will DVDs be around? Should the lack of DVD authoring software for FCPX even be a factor?
Thanks for offering your two cents.

Thanks everybody for your input.
Hollywood still releases movies on DVDs.
For now.  They used to release movies on Laser Disk too.  So DVDs will disappear -- just a question of when.
If not...look for Toast or other DVD authoring software.
I tried making a DVD in Toast. Worst compression I've ever seen.  Motion has an echo.
there's no reason why you can't keep working in DVDSP
Because it's unavailable. My students can't buy it.
why do you want to migrate?
I can make the argument to my students that I'm not teaching you software, I teaching you editing. But why have to make that argument and teach them on some current software that's purchasable by them.

  • CD/DVD dead??

    Hi,
I have the Satellite L355D-S7825 and all of a sudden the cd/dvd drive has disappeared. It is no longer listed on the Devise Manager. I searched the support area and did the regedit and still no drive in the manager.
Any other things I can do. When placing a disk in the drive it flashes exactly 15 time and then nothing. I'm thinking that this drive is deader that dead - what do you think?

Possibly.  Some Toshiba's will only accept actual Toshiba supplied DVD drives due to Firmware Issues from what I've read on this Forum though.  I've never replaced one on a Toshiba so I can't say one way or the other.  I know that I have been able to install DVD drives I've purchased from other sources like Newegg in Dell, HP, and Gateways with no problems.

  • IMac 17" Hard Drive and DVD dead after install.

I am attempting to install a WD 250gig hard drive into a 17” flat panel 800mhz imac. I followed the directions of taking the base apart and installing the new drive with great care. The Original 80 gig drive was set to master and the DVD drive was set to slave. I set the new WD drive to master and put the base back together. All I got was a flashing question mark. That was not unexpected, but I have been unable to get the iMac to recognize the existence of a hard drive or the DVD superdrive. I started the iMac from my Powerbook in firewire target mode. And verified that the iMac does not see the drives within the system information or the Disk Utility.
I have tried resetting PRAM, changing the jumpers on both drives, making the DVD master and the HD slave, setting the HD on cable select. Formatting the HD in my Powermac and cloning the original HD to it with CCC and replaced the ribbon cable. I now can take this iMac apart and put it back together faster then a Chinese factory worker.
I have abandon hopes of a new hard drive and put the 80 gig back in exactly as I found it. The iMac will not recognize the original configuration either. I started this project as favor for my sister who owns the iMac. There is not a lot of money here to send the whole works into service.
Does anyone have any ideas on what went wrong?
Is there a way I can test the power supply to the drives?
    imac 17" FP 800 mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Well we figured it out. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. Since nothing we did worked, I figured we had nothing to lose. With the assistance of my electronics wiz brother, we powered up the iMac while having the base opened and the components spread out on a table. Using a voltmeter, we determined we were only getting 3.6 volts to the drives. It should have been 12 volts. Somehow, something went wrong with the system board. After careful examination under a magnifying glass and some prodding with a voltmeter, we discovered that a tiny component next to the power connector on the system board fell off. It was no more than 2mm across and was marked (L13). We figured this was an inductance component and probably a filtering device for the power to the drives. We powered up the board and jumped the leads with a screwdriver. The HD and DVD fired right up. A careful soldering across L13 made the fix permanent. I got it all put back together and everything is running great.
The moral of the story; be extremely careful when pulling connectors off the system board. I must have knocked the component off when I first took the iMac apart. I just got lucky we found out what it was and were able to find a quick fix.
This a nice little iMac, but i never want to work on one again.

  • Is the DVD dead?

Ok, my question is a bit flippant, but...
I've posted quite a few videos to YouTube, and a few more to Vimeo. It's the first thing I think of doing when I want to show stuff to people. And of course, I have quite a few embedded YT videos in various site pages.
Although I've owned FCS for years, until the other day I never even launched DVD Studio Pro. I did so because I wanted to send some footage of my kids playing in a concert to relatives who are in a remote location with very slow internet.
It was only then that that I discovered, what a fantastic program DVDSP is!! (And my first DVD (with footage from shot on a Panasonic DVX100a) was pretty impressive, even though I say so myself…)
But back to my original question, does the DVD (still) have a future?
Just wondered what you all thought?
    Hugh

Whilst there are new technologies appearing all the time, the bulk of the general public are slow to change, especially when the existing stuff is much better than most people require.
Take Blu-ray. Over here in the UK, Blu-ray is about as popular as a porcupine in a balloon (edited by censor) factory despite being promoted vigorously.
True, gadget freaks and people engaged in video production tend to embrace these technologies, but the bulk of the population find that standard definition TVs, normal DVDs and even VCRs produce results that more than satisfy them.
So I think DVDs will be around in the mainstream for at least another decade, in spite of what Apple and other tech companies are hoping for.
In the beginning, TV was very poor quality and there was great room for improvement, but things have now become so good that there is very little room for meaningful improvements.
And what about steam-radio? That almost prehistoric technology is experiencing tremendous popularity.

  • IBook number 4, DVD dead AGAIN!

Ok, this is the 4th iBook I have purchased, not including clam shells! I mean the white ones, 14.1" screen. Yet again I have no DVD functioning? It used to be that it worked periodically, then the player would crap out, or Toast would not work. Or I could not eject the disk without rebooting.
For the longest time, DVD's have just not worked in my latest G4 iBook. I assume it is a known issue. CD's continued to work until today. Again, it is hit or miss getting the eject to work.
    So my questions are:
    1. How do I get a DVD/CD out of a slot loader? Is there a paper clip slot somewhere?
    2. Is this problem with DVD/CD players on the iBook G4 a known issue?
    3. If so, is there a recall or something? It seems every time something pukes I have to buy a new iBook. My previous powerbook lasted me a good 5 years + before I finally found it too slow.
    4. Is there anything I can do to get my DVD/CD player to work? Could it be a software problem? It shows up in the System Profiler.
Help I cannot afford to buy an iBook every year!!!
    Thanx!

    Lola,
I hate to tell you, but thats not exactly true. You see people posting these problems because it happens to them. But in the big picture there are plenty of iBooks without these problems. Maine has a law that all middle schoolers will have a iBook through the school. Thats hundreds of thousands of computers though schools alone. This is a mainly a Support page, meaning that only people with a problem would really post. Apple, along with other companies, have recalls on products because a the product or batch of product has a provable design defect. I think since that since the slot drive has been out for awhile not only on the iBook, that it is not a major problem. If your drive is broken under AppleCare, they will replace it.
    I hope that helps,

  • DVD DEAD

I tried to use this old clunkers DVD drive for the first time (CD's are fine) and when dvd player version 3.2 starts up (it does load) I get the message
! "DVD Player encountered a serious error.
    The current machine or system configuration is not supported. {-70013}
then the only option is to quit
I dont even know if I'm in the correct discussion forum so I apologise in advance if I'm not.
this happens irrespective of whether I use the internal internal ROM drive or an external DVD/RW drive. The DVD works fine in a G3 imac running osx.2.8 so I doubt there is any system configuration problems

  • Apple store returns my MBP17 with a new logicboard but broken dvd & battery

    i posted here before http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2383997&tstart=0
this is regards to MBP17 2006 NVDIA defected card return policy as prior thread title states, the computer fell under the coverage once the video card died, apple stores covered the parts by replacing the logic board.
Now i travel allot and apple claims where i took it i must return to fix it if the store messed it up., before this i asked them if it was fine to send it to spain so when i got there it would be ready, they agreed to accept it and ship it out if it was delayed in any way.
the mbp was sent to spain from italy, the logic board was replaced if not the next day, the store claimed they had a logic board in stock around and i was lucky, i told them not so true since i paid over 5 grand for this computer while everyone knew it was defected and i have to use it allot for video editing and any thing like that slows your cpu down., they denied that the logic board effects the performance even if the NVDIA video card was basically dying, one can not complain about that one right.
But what is interesting is that i took this mbp to the same apple place in spain a year before about the NVDIA card flickering, the clerk at the apple store agreed the flickering was the video card and told me it was covered, however, 14 days later they gave me a bill of 800 dollars instead for a broken dvd, dead battery, no blue tooth or airport and refused to replace the card until it was completely dead, i mean they really must argue with every word in their contracts legally to what they will cover to save penny's, but what is impossible is that it all worked accept for the flickering going on by the video card so i basically paid 4700 dollars for defected computer.
i showed the clerk again in his face after i complained that everything but the card worked and the bill was incorrect and he said he did not understand what happened and i should speak to the technician and he was not in as i assumed because i had to go to Berlin that day, assumed they knew that, So when i called i used skype and recorded this conversation, the tech said according to their tests the battery is dead, dvd player does not work and no airport or bluetooth works, but im on the net now speaking to him over skype about it, but he insisted its what their tests say and the problem. weird.
the prior experienced led me to believe that something stinks here, can a apple store run a chop shop billing people, can people test there computers to see if parts are replaced, when they where last used for what to protect themselves from scammers?
the recent experience tells me once you go to a apple store in Europe and they screw up apple claims you have to return to that same store, even if your traveling or had the computer shipped to italy or france?
what can i do to prove this computer was working besides 15 dvds i burned since the time they told me the dvd player was broken and now i can not even run a hardware test becuase it spits out every dvd, its not dust either, and aiport works, im on line now, blue tooth works, synced my sony 10 secs ago while typing, the video obviously finally works, th efan works since the heat sensors are not connected properly,
what am i supposed to do now outside of spain where im told i have to send it back to the same chop shop in spain?, how can customers protect themselves if something suspicious like this takes place?

Logic, it's difficult to say. As a previous of several years with the company I can speak from one perspective. As a customer of the company for 14+ years before employment, my experience would indicate something else.
While in England on a business trip my optical drive failed (2nd time) with the original replacement being performed by an Apple Authorized Service Provider in France. The service was performed in a very satisfactory timeline, with a genuine Apple service part. I got my receipt and copy of the work order "for my records."
When I went to the store in England (again, Apple Authorized Service Provider) and they asked about prior service on the machine I showed them that work order. Their response was pretty clear: "Wow, you hold onto those receipts? That's fantastic because the systems we use with Apple are pretty much confined to the country of repair and we can see very limited service history outside of the country."
This incident was 6 years ago, so I'm sure some things have changed. But I'm still a firm believer that for the best "end result" for the original poster would be to begin the process in the country where the service occurred and then proceed from there.

  • HD on DVD via DVD Studio Pro ?

    Hi
Was in a discussion on HD - and that DVD is in it self a limiting standard to SD-video.
Was contradicted that with Compressor™ and DVD Studio Pro one could do DVDs with 1240x720 resolution or even better.
If so - I've missed this totally.
Can someone with deep insight Please set me into a true way of understanding this !
What is possibly to get ?
What of this can playback on a standard DVD-player ?
Yours eagerly interested Bengt W (to be able to not lie in iDVD-forum)

SD video is SD video. If you start comparing 720x480 out of iDVD/FCE/FCS I think you will find that there data rates should be identical(iDVD could be the exception). You can compress it different ways and your monitor and player can improve the picture in some ways but it is still a SD source.
Your HD monitor is making your SD discs and Netflix rentals look good but keep in mind that they are not HD. If you are not playing HD-DVD(dead format) or Blu-Ray you do not have a HD system.
I do not have a lot of experience with iDVD of FCE but all SD video must be converted to 720x480 mpg-2 in order for DSP to create a SD DVD.
You can get the better quality by compressing your footage less and either limiting you footage to 75 minutes a disc or burning DL-DVD-+R media to get two hours on a disc. I would recommend and avg BR of 6.5 and a max of 7.7 with AC3 audio.
I do not have a recommendations for BR burners but I would search this forum and Creative Cow.
If you have laptop you should be able to play your HD QT movies through your TV and you wouldn't have to buy a player or a burner.

  • Inventory Program 2

I need some serious help and I'd appreciate anyone who knows Java. Here is the assignment:
Modify the Inventory Program so the application can handle multiple items. Use an array to store the items. The output should display the information one product at a time, including the item number, the name of the product, the number of units in stock, the price of each unit, and the value of the inventory of that product. In addition, the output should display the value of the entire inventory.
*?h Create a method to calculate the value of the entire inventory.*
*?h Create another method to sort the array items by the name of the product.*
*?h Post as an attachment in java forma*
I have not completed the program so I am not sure what kind of errors I will get. For some reason I cannot get past the first part of code. The errors are in bold print. The error for "new DVD(....) reads "cannot find symbol". The System.out.println("...") error reads "cannot find symbol..symbol: method getDVDPrice()...location: class inventoryprogram1app.DVD[]...operator + cannot be applied to java.lang.String,Arrray.getDVDPrice. I think that most of the bottom half is ok because I have no errors here, it's just the top part that I cant get past. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Inventory Program Part 3

Hi. I'd like to thank all who replied to my Inventory 2 program. Today I am working on Inventory Program Part 3 and need a little help with this also.
    Assignment Description:
    CheckPoint: Inventory Program Part 3
?h Resource: Java: How to Program
?h Due Date: Day 7 [Individual] forum
?h Modify the Inventory Program by creating a subclass of the product class that uses one additional unique feature of the product you chose (for the DVDs subclass, you could use movie title, for example). In the subclass, create a method to calculate the value of the inventory of a product with the same name as the method previously created for the product class. The subclass method should also add a 5% restocking fee to the value of the inventory of that product.
?h Modify the output to display this additional feature you have chosen and the restocking fee.
?h Post as an attachment in java format.
I think that I have most of the code correct, however I still have errors withing my code that I have changed around multiple times and still can't figure out how to correct the errors.
Here is my code for Inventory Program Part 3:
    package inventoryprogram3;
    import java.util.Scanner;
    import java.util.ArrayList;
    public class InventoryProgram3
         * @param args the command line arguments
        public static void main(String[] args)
            Scanner input = new Scanner (System.in);
            DVD[] dvd = new DVD[10];

You say you "ran" it. I think you mean compiled it? The public class is InventoryProgram3, not DVD.
If you did mean you tried to run it, then additionally, instead ofjava inventoryprogram3/InventoryProgram3
    Should be
    java inventoryprogram3.InventoryProgram3

  • The War is over: the winner is...

    Hi(Bonjour)!
    The WAR is over:
    http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/19/official-hd-dvd-dead-and-buried-format-war-is -over/
    And the winner is... Blu-Ray.
So, no more question about HD-DVD production/distribution but still no app to produce Blu-Ray DVD.
Be patient, I'm pretty shure that some companies should conquer this +terra incognita+ soon and we will see Blu-Ray DVD burners, media and authoriting tool on the market.
    Michel Boissonneault

It's funny you should bring up HD right now.
A few hours ago I was reading a question from someone who is thinking of getting a Canon HV20 and as I knew nothing about it I googled its name.
The link I got was to Amazon who were selling it incredibly cheaply (£545) and under the price were the words, "Want guaranteed delivery by 1pm Wednesday, February 20? Order it in the next 8 hours and 52 minutes.................. "
I suddenly remembered that date was my birthday !
Was this some omen telling me to part with my cash ?
I also looked at a comprehensive review which seemed to sing its praises - Canon HV20
So if I did decide to get it, would it work well on FCE/FCP ? No capture problems - after all it is a Canon and we know about their FW implementation ?
In short, would it be a good camera for shooting video and editing with FCE/FCP ?
    Ian.
P.S. My wife says we can have an HD TV to go with it - but, then it's my money she's talking about !

  • Stuck: Need Disk repair but DVD drive dead and only have USB 1

[1 Ghz flat-panel iMac with USB 1 ports (no USB 2) and also Firewire 400]
I noticed a strange discrepancy (small but concerning) between the size of a folder on hard drive (folder of all mp3's with no subfolders) and the backup of the same folder on a mounted thumb drive.
(The size difference was not due to any invisible .DS_Store files and both folders are displayed in List view format.)
    Disk Utility reports three things:
    1. Incorrect number of thread records
    2. Volume Bit Map needs minor repair
    3. Checking volume information.
Volume free block count",0)   [I might have mangled this line]
(It should be 13438611 instead of 13437937)
Here is the GOOD (but these are useless as explained under the "Bad"):
    - I have a Tiger 10.4 boot DVD for a repair ==>but see below
    - I also have a Disk Warrior disk (never used)
    Here is the BAD:
    - My built-in optical drive [Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-105] is -- I now discover - defunct and DEAD - it does not run the Tiger Boot DVD (in pristine shape).
    - I bought an external SuperDrive (unopened) but I believe no boot from USB 1 is possible in PowerPC so a SuperDrive with USB 1 is useless.
    Questions:
1.) Is there any way to boot from some external source (optical drive is DEAD) to run Disk Utility and/or Disk Warrior? -- I see none in this case! (gulp).
2.) More importantly (and this is my fundamental concern): Do the three Disk Utility hard drive issues constitute any direct threat to the integrity of my files?
I have almost everything backed up to duplicate thumb drives over these many months as standard practice.
Are these Disk Utility errors fully isolated to hard drive directory-keeping...or do these directory damage errors pose the possibility of mangling or harming my files or their metadata (filesize, etc.).
Put another way, when files are backed-up from a hard drive under the Disk Utility reports above, do they remain unharmed and undamaged by the situations reported by Disk Utility?
    Thanks,
    Bill

    Jeff and Michael,
Thank you both for your generous and thoughtful input.
Michael: As I slept on it overnight, the exact same idea occurred to me of trying a Target Mode to the iMac from my Lion MacbookPro (I have it but stupidly have yet to use it much!).
I did buy a Firewire 800 (MBP) to Firewire 400 (iMac) adapter cable a few months ago!
CONCERN: Would there be potential compatibility issues or risks in running Lion 10.7's Disk Utility against the hard drive of the old OSX 10.4 iMac in Target Disk Mode?
==> Assuming an "it's ok" answer to the Target Disk question, would the majority of users agree that the Target Disk Mode would be more prudent than running:
fsck -fy   in Single User Mode
I have never done fsck -fy before especially because I was under the impression there were issues with Journaled drived but from what I have read today...it looks ok to do)
Jeff: Can't thank you enough for the reference to the OTW DVD drive. I might first invest $10 in one of those DVD lens cleaner disks that I've read about. It's probably not the issue or else why would the drive read commercial Music cds perfectly well!
    Thanks,
    Bilil

  • CD/DVD Drive Dead

    Hey everyone,
My CD/DVD Drive is dead. Trying to reinstall the OS 10.6.
My Drive is dead, takes the disk, makes lots of grinding, and does nothing but spit it out. May have recognized it once out of 20 times, but failed during the install.
I thought about using the Remote Install OSX like you would for a MacBook Air, but it seems that the Mini doesn't have the options for WiFi or network when booting holding option on the Mini so that seems to be out.
Anyone have any experience with this? I was thinking that I could use an External USB DVD Drive to install the OS. Does anyone know if that would work?

The drive itself seems to be dead, Doesn't read any CD / DVD's
I haven't tried using a Laser Lens cleaner, usually those are not recommended for Slot load drives, I have also not tried using Compressed Air to blow into the slot.
It would be much more useful to me to have a USB External CD/DVD drive, as I could use that with any of the computers here. I'm just wondering if anyone knows it the Mini would be able to Boot / Install from an external USB Drive.

  • How can i restore from Recovery Disk if my notebook's hard drive and dvd drives are dead.

Hi. Good day. My hard drive just crashed and im trying to restore from my restore disks. Unfortunately, my dvd is dead too. I copied the recovery disks to a new hard drive and tried booting from a flash drive but the noteebook is still giving me the SMART hd error message. Please help. Thanks.

    Hi,
If you have, or can borrow an external CD/DVD drive it would be worth trying this although I'm not certain your notebook will support booting from a drive connected via USB.
Another option may be to see if you can find a second hand optical drive on somewhere like Ebay - the drives compatible with your notebook can be found on Page 59 of your Maintenance & Service Guide.  It may even be worth removing a re-seating your existing drive just in case this helps as described in this section.
Does the drive show up in Device Manager?  If it does, right click it and select Properties.  Select the driver tab and see if there is an error code in the status box.

  • Dead CD/DVD Drive

    Hello,
I was using my laptop recently and the CD I was using died and I couldn't access it or eject it. I finally was able to get it out using the credit card/boot up method online. I then tried several different CDs and DVDs with the same result. The drive spins up the disk when I insert it but it just doesn't mount. System profiler and drutil list show no drive, thus I am assuming the drive is dead. Anything else I should try before sending it in for repair?

My drive was immediately ejecting any disc I inserted. The PMU reset cured that problem long enough to complete a project. I am planning to replace the drive in the near future.
