Is EDGE Secure?

Guess when I'm here at home I have nothing to worry about since I'm connected under my secure wifi network...but is the Edge network secure?
say I'm out and about and wish to sign onto my online bank account (Wamu) or want to purchase or check my auctions on eBay, or see my Paypal balance.
???

HTTPS provides end to end strong encryption. If you have an HTTPS (SSL) connection it doesn't matter what encryption is (or is not) available on the individual links.
If you are using WEP on your home network that is essentially equivalent to no encryption at the current time. There is freeware that will break WEP in seconds, so anyone within range of your network can monitor what goes over it. This is why HTTPS encryption is essential.
WPA is much stronger if you have a long passphrase, but HTTPS is stronger still.

  • Wifi/Edge/Security Questions

I got the Iphone recently and have had the WIFI option disabled because I thought there were security issues with that and figured that should be the 2nd option when Edge can't connect. But EDGE is soooo slow.
So from what I've read, I should have it try to connect to Wifi first, which I've just configured with my home wifi connection. I've entered the password and it works beautifully (and much faster). My question is how to handle the connection when outside my home. Should I keep it on Wifi? What about security issues when using a public wifi? What is the general rule of thumb for connecting this way...thx!

When connecting a laptop or device such as the iPhone to a public Wi-Fi access point - password protected or not, it is preferable to use an email account that supports using SSL for the incoming and outgoing mail servers but regardless, you should approach such a connection as if data sent and received can be intercepted by someone else accessing the same network.
You don't want to do any banking or financial transactions with Safari - even though these types of websites are secured and just assume any data received and sent via email can be intercepted and read. Don't be sending or receiving any sensitive data via email, etc.
Your Wi-Fi connection at home is secure or should be - at least WEP encrypted but using WPA2 is preferable since it is much more secure than WEP for a wireless network to prevent others from gaining access to your wireless network but even worse, access to data on computers or devices connected to your wireless network.

  • IPhone/Edge security and available space question

    2 questions here:
    1) Is it 'safe' to access sites like online banking or enter credit card information using the iphone/edge, or is it not really secure? As a side-question, is it more or less secure to do the same using iphone/wifi?
    2) I have about 45MB free on my iphone (according to itunes). Does this number include ALL space on the iphone (meaning if I fill that up, it won't have any room to cache data/download email, etc..) or does it have a portion of the drive partitioned off for its own uses? Should I be worrying about keeping some free space or will it do it on its own?

    1. Safe is a relative term. If someone is snooping they may intercept your transmission. Same thing with WiFi. When you connect to banking sites, you are establishing secure connections, and some have better security than others. But even with a hard connection, someone can have a sniffer hooked up to a port somewhere down the line and intercept your transmission. Bottom line - I connect to these sites and dont worry about it too much.
    2. 45MB??? Where did all your space go??? There is a space allotted for the system, but as an old-schooler I have never "used up" all my storage - it tends to cause problems. I am pretty sure the system will alert you if you fill up beyond capacity or if you will hinder its operation. It a pretty smart phone. I would not fill it to capacity though. Its just an old habit I have.

  • IPhone Security using Edge an/or WiFi

    Hi.
I'm curious about security on the iPhone, particularly using the Mail app when using Edge and/or WiFi. Is Edge secure in a way that WiFi isn't? I don't know anything about WiFi, but understand that packets can be sniffed in transit, and anything sent in the clear can be compromised.
Any truth to that? And if so, is surfing the web and checking mail with Mail while out and about any safer with Edge? What about using the AIM client to chat?
Please understand that I'm not familiar with Edge and WiFi, just looking for some clarification.
    Thx,
    Scott

The most dangerous aspect of checking email is that most systems pass username and password in the clear. Especially if you are using an email client without SSL.
If you are on WiFi with no encryption (WPA, WEP) like at a starbucks, then the worst thing you could do is check email that has no SSL. You are throwing your Username and password on the wire. A person could take, go to Amazon and any other major website and say they forgot the password. Put in your email address and then watch your mailbox for a reset. Then they go to Amazon and order stuff with your credit card (that is on file).
The cell network, as mentioned above, is a little safer only because you don't have to worry about someone sitting in the same room monitoring your data usage.
Same rules apply to AIM, but if you don't have any stores or credit cards tied in to it, the worse that happens is someone watches your conversations and impersonates you.
These security issues are not limits of the iPhone, but email and AIM implementation by your providers.

  • Is the 2950 secure?

    Hello,
In my opinion, any network device that is considered obsolete is also considered insecure in today's world.  If I am wrong, please correct me on this.
If a Cisco 2950 switch that went EOL/EOS over 13 years ago is secure enough to put at the edge of a network, can someone explain how and why to me?
    Thank you in Advance.

If a layer 2 switch (such as the 2950) is only needed for external connectivity and has no control plane exposure or special access into your interior network, it can function with quite adequate security for the network edge.
You should have security controls both upstream and downstream of it that perform the significant edge security functions. Generally an external-only switch does not need to do anything security-wise other than protect itself from security-related attacks. Without a control plane exposure (i.e. no publicly addressable interface, no snmp services etc.) it can do a decent job at that.

  • IPhone stays on Edge even though secure wifi is present and connected

My phone connects to unsecure wifi fine. If I try and connect to a secure network, enter the correct ID, the phone says I'm connected and I get the wireless symbol for about a minuit before it switches back to Edge. Unsecure wifi networks no problem. The same thing happened on three different secure networks - connected and then switched to Edge? Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a software issue with iPhone or am I missing something? We have numerous computers connected via the secure wireless network working fine. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.
    iPhone

The Solution to the problem that you having is the following:
    "Go to" SETTINGS
    Wi-Fi
"Arrow over on the network which you are trying to connect"
    Forget this Network
    "Confirm" Forget Network
    "Go back to" Wi-Fi Networks
"Choose the network which you are trying to connect"
*"In the Security box arrow over and choose" WEP hex or ASCII
    "Now press" Enter Password
"Now enter your WEP Key etc..."
This should allow you to stay connected to a security protected network.

  • Security/Firewall recommendations for DirectAccess 2012 (Dual-NIC Edge Configuration)

    Hello all,
We have installed and configured DirectAccess 2012 with the Edge Configuration with the thought that we would be able to install TMG directly on this server (as we did with the original 2008 DirectAccess/UAG). It appears that we cannot install TMG on Server
2012 R2, so now we have a server directly connected to the outside world with public IP's assigned to it and no firewall other than Windows Firewall. I know that most organizations choose to configure DirectAccess behind an Edge device (hindsight being perfect,
we should have as well) however we did not and it appears that we can't easily change this without completely reconfiguring DirectAccess (which took several days to get it right).
So my question: What are the security/firewall recommendations for a DirectAccess server in an Edge scenario? I've Googled this and have not found much. Thanks in advance,
    Brad
    -Brad

Its always good to have a Firewall infront of a domain joined machine and of course DA Server is not an exception.
Server 2012 can work behind a Firewall with NAT functionality enabled or disabled.
if you have a fully functional DA with EDGE profile enabled, still you can configue any firewall(without NATing functionality) without changing the configuration settings in DA.
Also you can have TMG protecting your existing DA setup. Below is the link for it.
    http://www.isaserver.org/articles-tutorials/general/implementing-windows-server-2012-directaccess-behind-forefront-tmg-part1.html
Please let me know, how it goes.

  • UAG DirectAccess more secure than 2012 DirectAccess in edge scenario by default ?

I installed 2012 DirectAccess in Edge configuration, first interface connected to intranet and second interface connected to internet.
When I did port scanning from internet, to my suprise there is about 1000 port open to internet. 85% are high ports, and rest are well-know ports.
Ports like tcp 3389, tcp 135, tcp 445 are open to everybody by default.
Isn't this enormous security issue ? At least it should be mentioned somewhere ?
So options are, you manually configure windows firewall rules or you put your DirectAccess server behind edge firewall, or you build you DirectAccess with NAT.
With UAG DirectAccess you really did not have this problem, you opened to internet only the few ports that were needed for DirectAccess. UAG DirectAccess was easily built
    without an edge firewall.
    Thanks,
    -oraat

Hi, Although technically Windows has a very good firewall a DirectAccess Server is an Edge device that should always be located behind a front-end firewall. And optionally in front of a back-end firewall. Maybe the following post I have answered provides
    you a bit more information:

  • Origin Edge Setup Security Settings

I am currently testing security hardening with FMS 4.0.3 r4011 in an Origin Edge setup.
What I have found is that the SWF verification can only be processed on the Origin, is this correct? The config ( adobe/fms/conf/_defaultRoot_/_defaultVHost_/Application.xml ) within the Edge server is ignored when <SWFVerification enabled="true"> is set and the correct SWF file copied to the correct directory, once this config is enabled on the Origin then SWF-v takes place.
RTMPE calls from client to edge fails on the origin with error message connection rejected by server. Reason : [ Server.Reject ] : Connection failed.
We know RTMPE from edge to origin does not work ( with this version of FMS ), however if I remove the rtmp block ( <DisallowedProtocols></DisallowedProtocols> ), rtmpe from client to edge works and is accepted by the origin server. If I do the same call (rtmpe) direct to the Origin with rtmp blocked it works fine.
My questions really are how do I only allow rtmpe and enable SWF verification within an Origin Edge setup. Can the Edge server do any security checking?
To enable the Edge I have done the below and have successfully played content before changing to enable rtmpe only and enforce swf-v.
    <Mode>remote</Mode>
    <Anonymous>false</Anonymous>
    <CacheDir enabled="true" useAppName="true">
    <RouteEntry>*:*;my_origin_server_ip_removed:1935</RouteEntry>

If I only allow rtmpe on the origin for mt application, then the edge can not connect to it as that is set to rtmp. To be having an edge to do a simple rtmp block requires a lot of work where the option is available within the application.xml which is not used, so scripting and further work is required to do a simple task.
So this means using an origin edge setup you can not enforce RTMPE unless you do some scripting or extra work, which requires time, testing and extra for the support guys.
How do I put in a request to have edge servers block RTMPE without scripting and moving the <DisallowedProtocols></DisallowedProtocols> key to the Vhost.xml or something?
Plus user-agent checking to bypass rtmpe is very weak security to allow FME or fmscheck.

  • Securing Internet Edge Switch

I am fairly familiar with hardening of Cisco routers acting as an internet gateway, like enabling SSH and blocking inbound access to private range IP addressing via ACLs, disabling , but what about switches?   Is there a best practice on configuring a switch that is being used as a L3 device for internet access?
    Thanks...
    Andy

    Hi,
For L3 switch @ internet edge, you can use the similar security restrictions (ACLs, disabling services that is not needed etc) and inaddition 'admin down' the ports that are not being used. In addition to that if the switch IP not required to advertise to interenet, do not add the default route (you may need this incase of L3 behaviour, but you can judge better).

  • How secure is Safari/Edge?

    Hi,
    I'm new to Mac.
I use internet banking and paypal quite often from my home pc. As yet I've been hesitant to sign on to any financial web sites that require passwords over the iPhone and Edge network.
    Is it safe?
Any recommendations for maintaining security with the iPhone would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Donald

Its as safe as any other over the air connection. Most of your financial sites require secure servers so there is a layer of security there.
That being said, if someone is in range of your iPhone and they want your personal information they can get it. No OTA connection is 100% secure. The odds are low that they would be able to hack you on the fly but there is always a chance.
I personally don't risk it and only do my financial transactions on my hard wired Mac.

  • EDGE and Security

    Howdy
Is there some way to be certain the info I send over my iPhone via an EDGE connection is secure? I will be traveling in France, where I can access EDGE, but I have not found any info in the forums that talks about a possible security issue with EDGE.
    Thanks for any help
    rlmslo

I would be more concerned with sending info over Wifi than EDGE. This is not a simple thing to hack like packet reinjection of encrypted Wifi connections. Your phone's link with the network is constantly altered using an algorithm unique to that specific interaction. Not since TDMA has this been an issue.

please i didnt run BGP on this router ,please can i protect this router or network from attack by ACL ? or need to install ASA Firewall ?
Yes, you can protect your router from attack using ACLs.  Regarding protecting the rest of your network, i.e. do you need something like an ASA, that depends on the security needs of the rest of your network.
What firewalls offer, that "normal" ACLs usually don't do, is basing security on session state.  I.e. Firewalls often will restrict some/much external traffic to return traffic (some host on the inside had to start the session).
But do you need a firewall?
Again, depending on your interior network security needs, security features of a router might be sufficient.  For example, you might only allow return traffic using a reflective ACL (http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/ios/12_2/security/configuration/guide/fsecur_c/scfreflx.html).  Or you might only allow TCP traffic that has the established bit set (could be spoofed but unless it matches what's expected by the directed to host, the host will drop).  If you use NAT, return traffic much match an outbound session.  Additionally, beyond ACLs, Cisco routers often support a security feature set that will provide additional firewall features, such as CBAC (http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/security/ios-firewall/13814-32.html) or ZFW (http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/security/ios-firewall/98628-zone-design-guide.html).
A dedicated firewall device, such as an ASA, is often needed when your security requirements cannot be met by the above.  Is this true for you?  Don't know.  If you don't know, that's a question probably better answered obtaining personal consultation.  Network security, as a subject, is complex enough that Cisco offers secuity certifications from CCNA to CCIE.
