Is Edition Based Redefinition available in the Standard Edition of 11g?

Thanks for all replies.

Online index rebuild and Online table redefinition require EE version - http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/license.112/e10594/editions.htm#CJACGHEB
I believe other features of Edition based redefinition are available in all versions - http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/appdev.112/e17125/adfns_editions.htm

  • How to use Edition Based Redefinition in APEX?

    Hello,
This might be my first question on this forum ;-)
I am trying to get 11gR2 Edition Based Redefinition to work within APEX. But for testing purposes (before altering the database to use the new edition as the default) I have to set the edition at the session level. But as APEX shares sessions from the pool (I might get another session with every page refresh/call), I need to execute an ALTER SESSION command.
I can't use EXECUTE IMMEDIATE, 'cause that results in:
    execute immediate 'alter session set edition=HR_RELEASE2';
ORA-38815 : ALTER SESSION SET EDITION must be a top-level SQL statement
So is there a way to just run a SQL command at the "start" of a page (request)?

    Hello all,
Patrick and John were on the right track...
After contacting Bryn (the Oracle brain behind EBR), there appeared to be a DAD attribute called 'database-edition'. Using this you can change the Edition of a DAD (and via the DAD ... all the users that use that DAD):
    begin
    dbms_epg.set_dad_attribute('APEX', 'database-edition', 'HR_RELEASE2');
end;The funny thing is that a user doesn't have to re-connect. With the next server roundtrip he will use the other edition!
Remarkable fact: This setting doesn't effect the Session-Edition, but only the Current-Edition. Have to test how that'll work out when using CrossEdition Triggers...
Another thing: There seems to be an equivalent for the Apache /HTTP Server.
You have to add a line to your dads.conf setting for PlsqlDatabaseEdition.
If I add that line (in my environment) the HTTP Server fails to start with:
    /home/oracle/OraHome_1/Apache/Apache/bin/apachectl start: execing httpd
Syntax error on line 48 of /home/oracle/OraHome_1/Apache/modplsql/conf/dads.conf:
Invalid command 'PlsqlDatabaseEdition', perhaps mis-spelled or defined by a module not included in the server configurationApart from that: You have to restart the HTTP Server to use the changed DAD. So that is in opposite of the whole goal of EBR (24 x 7 availability).
Once I figured it all out I'll write a blog post about it. If somebody has anything to add to this thread, feel free! Especially the HTTP Server/Edition combination would be interesting!

  • XA Libs available in 10g Standard Edition?

    Hello,
I'm a bit confused about the availability of XA support in the different versions of Oracle 10g. Are the XA Libs (oraxa10.lib, xa.h) available (and licensed) in the Standard Edition or Standard Edition One?
Docs don't give a reliable answer:
The Feature Table says 'Y' for "Distributed queries/transactions" for all editions - but is XA meant here?
    http://oracle-doku.de/oracle_10g_documentation/appdev.101/b10779/ociadwin.htm
"The Oracle XA Library is automatically installed as part of Enterprise Edition."
Does that mean other editions don't include it?
    OTOH...
    http://oracle-doku.de/oracle_10g_documentation/appdev.101/b10795/adfns_xa.htm
"requirements - None. The functionality to support XA is part of both Standard Edition and Enterprise Edition."
    Any hints?

"The Oracle XA Library is automatically installed as
    part of Enterprise Edition."
Does that mean other editions don't include it?Considering the "functionality ... is part of SE and EE", perhaps the above means just that a standard EE install type installs XA libs, in other cases (Std, Custom) you need to explicitly select some component for libs etc. to be installed.
But instead of guessing, try and see if you have the time :)

  • I want to try out the Standard edition of Acrobat XI. What do I do?

I want to try out the Standard edition of Acrobat before purchasing to see if it is right for my company, but the only available trial is for the Pro edition. I don't want to commit to purchasing the Standard edition before trying out that specific edition, since it will have less features than the Pro edition. I want to avoid a scenario where I pay for the Standard edition, find out it doesn't have the features I need, and then pay again for the Pro edition. Advice, anyone?

Also wondering if, when I downloaded the Standard edition, there would be the option to upgrade to Acrobat XI Pro while only having to pay the difference between the two prices, rather than paying the full price after having already purchased the Standard edition? Can anyone confirm whether this would be a possibility?

  • Ordered Thetharhythm Limited Edition but got the standard edition instead

I'm thinking the game has the same SKUs and the website does say Limited Edition but i got the standard edition instead. I'd like to play the game but I'm wondering if there's a way i can get an LE or if I should just return my copy.

    Hello Geodude,
First, my apologies for the late response here! Things get a bit crazy around the Holidays, so I appreciate your patience while awaiting a response from us. With that, I’m sorry to hear that you may have received a standard version of Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call, especially if you ordered the Limited Edition.
Due to the delay in response, it’s quite possible you’ve made a determination here. If not, checking with your local store to see if they have the Limited Edition of the game available wouldn’t be a bad route to go! Returning the game is definitely an option as well, as you acknowledged, although we usually hope for a resolution, so you don’t have to go that route!
If you still need help here, please don’t hesitate to send me a private message using the link in my signature.

  • Editions based redefinitions to replace individual schema  objects concept

    Hello,
Just wanted to get some opinion.
    Oracle db : 11.2.0.2
Our company has only one schema where all objects reside in the design database and developers add code, modify objects etc within that same schema and invalidate other code and other developers sometimes spend a lot of hours around this.
We personally thought to use editions based redefinitions to resolve this , that way, each developer could modify code in his own edition and other developers are unaware of the change and unaffected.
Would this be ok and if we go this route, how does this affect the current tablespace and what other issues could we expect.
Lets say we re talking 10 developers.
    Thanks.

    >
The problem is even if we have private objects in our own schema, those would not be referenced since developers login to the app using the main schema bcos of object access restrictions and other thing is most of the code references objects using main schemaname.object (old code) and not much synonyms.
    >
I understand that but edition-based redefinitioning is primarily to support 'code' updates, not DDL and object updates. And it is primarily used to support those updates in the higher-level environments even including production. For those environments it isn't really necessary to have editioned tables or the other currently non-supported objects; the goal is to get new code into place while the current code is running and then 'switch' to it as seamlessly as possible.
The white paper I cited lists the limited objects that can be editioned.
    >
editionable object types, editions-enabled users, and editioned objects
    • Views (and therefore editioning views), synonyms, and all the kinds of PL/SQL objects
type13 (and therefore crossedition triggers) are editionable object types. There are no other
editionable object types. For example, table is not an editionable object type; nor is
    java class14.
    >
Unfortunately, for DEV environments those restrictions are generally too onerous when entirely new features are being added.
A few of the larger environments I've worked in the developers essentially needed their own local version of the entire chain of browser, web server, app server and database. Functionality such as single-signon was global but that was about it.
Because of the limitations and the relatively steep learning curve to properly architect and implement editioning you need to do adequate preparation and testing to make sure it is going to help you more than hurt you.

  • Problem Moving From the Standard Edition to the Enterprise Edition

    Hi !
I am trying to move from Oracle 10g R2 10.2.0.1 Standard Edition to Oracle 10g R2 10.2.0.1 Enterprise Edition.
Platform is MS Windows XP PRO SP2
I follow all steps described in "Oracle® Database Upgrade Guide 10g Release 2 (10.2)" - section Moving From the Standard Edition to the Enterprise Edition.
    http://download-east.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14238/intro.htm#sthref10
The problem is that after update from St. edition to Ent. edition when I run:
    select * from v$version - I see :
    Connected to:
    Oracle Database 10g Release 10.2.0.1.0 - Production
while I expect to see something like .....
Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.1.0 - Production With the Partitioning, OLAP and Data Mining Scoring Engine options
Am I wrong ? Why information in view v$version does not update after this ?

    Phil

In your document you refer to the upgrade guide, this upgrade guide applies when you are upgrading from previous Oracle releases to 10g, not SE->EE.
If you want a procedure to upgrade the SE to EE, then follow this metalink note:
"How to Upgrade from Standard to Enterprise Edition ?
    Doc ID:      Note:117048.1"
If you performed this specific upgrade and you still see this error, then probably you are facing a bug, similar to the one described in "5844095", where the version is changed form SE->EE after 10.2.0.3 patchset application.
In your case it should be enough to apply 10.2.0.3 patchset to show it properly.

  • MS SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition on Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition

    Hello Team,
Is there any issue/conflicts/limitationn to install MS SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition on Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition.
OR their is nothing to worry about it I guess their is memory limitation between both of them. Please suggest
     Regards
    Naveed Amir

    Hi,
Here you can find the officially Hardware and Software Requirements for SQL Server 2008 R2:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506(v=sql.105).aspx
There should be NO problem as much as I know if the basic limitation fit you (as shanky mentioned).
I had (an clients still have) several servers with Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard & SQL
Server 2008 R2 Enterprise and Standard with no problem (today I have one old developing server with this exact installations work great for several years).

  • Using BizTalk Enterprise Edition 2009/2013 with SQL Server Standard Edition vs Enterprise Edition

    Hi All,
I would like to know what are the Drawbacks of using BizTalk Server Enterprise Edition 2009/2013 with SQL Server Standard Edition vs Enterprise Edition.
We are currently using Enterprise Edition.
    1) Are there any adverse performance constraints? Microsoft mentions to use SQL Server Enterprise Edition for "Optimal Performance" but does not expand on the topic.
    2) Any features missing?
    2) Is there a supported way to downgrade SQL Enterprise to Standard for an exisiting BTS Environment?
    Thanks!

    1) SQL Standard is limited to 4 CPU's and 64GB of memory while Enterprise is 8 CPU and 2TB or memory.
    2) The only BizTalk feature dependency on a SQL Enterprise feature is BAM Real-Time Aggrigations which requires Analysis Services RTA.
    3) Yes, but it's not a SQL downgrade really, you would move the BizTalk databases:

  • Assets upload: Deactivation Date is not available in the Standard Program

    Hi,
I am trying to use the standard program for Assets upload,RAALTD01. But, the field de-activation date (ANLA-DEAKT) is not available for mapping. This is the only field am missing out of more than 200 fields involved in the upload. What would be the best approach inorder that I can use LSMW and at the same time map this deactivation date field ; provided we are not using the Recording method.
    Looking forward to your replies.

you can use ABAP program with BAPI
    call function 'BAPI_FIXEDASSET_OVRTAKE_CREATE'

It is not possible to do this in the transaction AS91. When you are doing the take over during a fiscal year you have to go from the tab Asset values to Transactions and fill in there the ttype for deactivation.
Other wise you have to create a LSMW that is doing this deactivation after the upload

  • Edition Based Redefinition in Oracle 11g R2

Regarding new feature EBR in Oracle 11g r2
As we all know Editioning view is like a wrapper over the base table which allows each edition to see the table in the form it needs, all data operations will be on editioning view once the view is created.
( Small downtime is required to rename the original_table to original_table_base, as we need to create editioning view as "original_table", applications do not have to change anything as its still pointing to "original_table" )
During our POC on editioning views (DMLs on E.Views), we have noticed base table names into redo logs ("original_table_base")!!
This requires significant amount of changes on the application utilizing redo log as source. (for example Goldengate).
My question is do we have any work around to convert those redo entries into "original_table" ?

    Deepak,
If I do remember correctly, 11gr2 table compression is enabled for the subsequent data only(can't recall whether its applicable to the exsiting data as well, need to verify it). Also, if the table's data is mostly unique, the rate of compression won't be much higher.
