Is FC Studio too much application for hobbyist?

I visited my son at his college today. They have the academic version of the latest final cut studio for sale in the student store for $299. That's a steal compared to what it sells for in the Apple Store.
My MBP 2.0 is a little over 3 years old and i'm not sure if it can handle the demands of FCS. I have about 20 gigs of space on my internal HD and a few external drives with about 1tb of free space.
I edit using FC express now and do ok. But the $299 price is almost too hard to pass up.
I don't mind paying the $299 but I don't want to do it if my MBP would not be able to handle it.
I'd appreciate your thoughts and comments.
Thanks.

but why should that stop someone who wants to use it, and pay money for it from doing so.
Umm, because how you're suggesting they go about it, is a breach of the License Agreement? i.e. ILLEGAL ?
Sorry, but the licenses are NOT open to our interpretation. Just because you think we should be able to act however we want, doesn't make it right. In doubt? Ask an attorney to clarify it for you. See, there is no gray area here. If you suppose Studio X is being strict, well that's fine: that's the only way to be. You either keep it 100% legit and legal. Or you don't! There is no middle-of-the-road here! Sorry.
This is just like the people who ASSUME that it's A-Okay to use any music that they want in their videos because it's only for "private" use. Again, we don't have the luxury to interpret the law however we want. Despite our infinite ability to rationalize it.
So how do you try the software? Go to an Apple Store and have an employee show you as much as possible with FCE and/or FCP. Play around with them for a couple hours. Insufficient? Too bad.
And who says Apple is the ONLY way to go? Don't like the fact they don't have trial versions? Go to adobe.com and download their 30 day trial for Premiere! Tools are tools! Do you want to be an editor or a button-pusher? Point is: a great carpenter is great despite whose name is stamped on his hammer. Çraftsman, Stanley - irrelevant. Sure you have to commit to "someone's buttons" to start pushing in order to get the editing experience - I get it! But FCP doesn't help you make editing decisions. Neither does Premiere, or AVID, or Vegas, Quantel, Smoke....
I'm not so naive to think that there aren't 1,000's of people using FCP (& the Suite) illegally. However, when we get folks on the "fringe", like our OP here, it's our duty to bring them into the fold of 100% legitimacy. We should NOT be encouraging anything but this. Bending the rules IS breaking the rules!
If we can guide our "peers", is it best to have them steal the software outright, bootleg it? Completely and blatantly break the law? Or is it better to encourage them to break the law a LITTLE bit, by spending some money, while still breaking the license agreement? Some money is better than nothing, right? Sounds like you're condoning the latter.

    I just bought a macbook pro 13" with 4gb and would like to get aperture on it.  Will aperture require too much ram for my computer?  Thanks for any support.

    I just bought a macbook pro 13" with 4gb
    I have been using Aperture on such a system, and it was o.k. with Snowleopard and moderately sized images. After I upgraded to Lion and started to user larger image files - 30 MB tiffs, I saw the occasional beachball spinning. You should be prepared to quit other applications that will hog the RAM (like Safari), when working with Aperture on Lion or Mt. Lion with only 4 GB. If you can, follow Frank Caggiano's recommendation and upgrade to 8GB. It will make a large difference.

    You may need to reset your network settings, making sure the network you're accessing is stable: tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
    If your iPhone still can't connect to App Store, tap Settings > iTunes & App Store > tap the Apple ID and sign out > later, sign in with your Apple ID.

  • Too much resizing for capture sharpening?

    For images that will be offset printed 2.25" wide by various lesser heights, is there a disadvantage to shooting large raw captures? At first I wanted to keep a large original 3008 x 2000 ppi as a master in case we wanted a larger print. But I'm not sure if exposure and other develop settings are degraded when image is resized too much. Would capture sharpening be less effective if image is reduced so much? I'm trying to test whether I should set a smaller file size when shooting, or hold certain develop settings till after resizing.
    Thank you,
    Tim

    Tim, I think that Stu may have misunderstood your potential workaround. If I understand correctly, your plan was to:
    1. capture sharpen in LR
    2. export from LR at the new size
    3. re-import the newly resized version into LR
    4. Use the sharpening tools on the resized version to output sharpen
    5. Export the output sharpened resized image at "full-size" (i.e. no further resizing on export)
    And your question was "if both LR and PS are being used to sharpen the same re-sized image, what can PS do that LR cannot," right?
    Well, I have also been experimenting with this workaround and have found it to be satisfactory for many images. From what I can tell, USM in Photoshop is different in at least these potentially significant ways:
    1. PS has Threshold which, from what I can tell, works differently than Detail. You should play with each to get a feel for when it might be advantageous to use each. I have found threshold to be most useful for keeping PS from applying sharpening to fine-grain noise in the image. However, most fine-grain noise will be "averaged out" when downsizing, so this might not be an important difference.
    2. PS can apply a much greater amount of sharpening. Your need for huge amounts of sharpening will depend on the image.
    3. PS can use radii less than 0.5, which can be very useful for small thumbnail-size images.

  • Not sure if Blackberry is too much phone for me - any thoughts????

    I'm not a techie, not crazy about a lot of the new technology, and have used just a plain old razr for a few years and that was moving up for me as far as cell phones.  Bought a Blackberry primarily for the PDA aspect and because I heard so many great things about them.  I feel very awkward and dumb when I'm trying to figure things out, although I have straightened out a few problems on my own.  Now I'm not sure if I have too much phone....   Will I ever get used to this thing and all the things one can do with them or should I downsize to something simpler?  Will probably not use it to access the web, send e-mails, download whatever - at least no plans at this point.  Would the new Blackberry flip phone work better for me?  I'd appreciate any thoughts from all you experienced users.

    Welcme to the Frums!
    Absolutely  you will get the hang of the BlackBerry! It will jsut take a lot of patience and alot of researching. I suggest taking the BlackBerry 101 class ! Read through it, it is very helpful and the people here on the forums are wonderful to help you!!!

    I think the CURVE would be better if you are not tech savy as the flip blackberry uses suretype and its a little more difficult to learn if you are new.

    Using an older, second-issue iPad, I can download images into it from my camera. I cannot move them out of the iPad into a thumb drive. The message I receive is that the thumb drives require too much energy to make the transfer. What can I do?

    Thats how its designed. in order to export your images or videos, the best method might be by connecting the iPad to your computer, or directly to the thumb drive connected to your computer, not to the iPad. Then is as simple as drag and drop. The other method could be sending them by email or uploading via a cloud service but that will take more time do get it done.

  • [Solved] Too much applications start at boot up !

    Hello !
    I apologize in advance for my poor English ...
    So I used to run GNOME as my Desktop Environment, and I set some applications to start at boot up, such as Tilda, Cairo-dock, conky ...
    Now, I'm using OpenBox, and some applications start, even if they're not in my autostart.sh !
    So, here is my autostart.sh
    # Run the system-wide support stuff
    . $GLOBALAUTOSTART
    # Programs to launch at startup
    xcompmgr -t-5 -l-5 -r4.2 -o.55 &
    # Programs that will run after Openbox has started
    (sleep 2 && conky) &
    So in this case, xcompmgr and conky starts, but cairo-dock and conky too, even if they're not here my autostart.
    How can I control these applications ?
    This problem is like a window$ problem, so I must do something !

  • JDBC adapter taking too much time for inserting

    we` have given a "update insert" query to be used in the JDBC adapter to insert these records into the database. Consists of 3 tables with 29fields in first, 4 fields in the other two.
    While message in XI gets processed in just 1-3 secs, the database processing time goes up to as much as 8 minutes for one record to get inserted.
    As immediate solution, is there any way we can have the JDBC adapter process these messages faster? These messages get queued up and hence all the other messages also get queued up delaying the other interfaces. We have a central adapter engine...
    Also is there any way we can get alert when the status is in "Processing/To be delivered/Delivering" and the message count exceeds a certain number say 1000

    I am using only one receiver JDBC channel
    We have been inserting three different table by using 3 different statemets tags(i.e) statement1(for table1),statement2(for table2),statement3(for table3).
    My structure is,

        <Statement1>

  • Too much data for JTextArea

    Howdy people, I've been stuck on this problem for a while now. I writing a povvy hex-editor, and it works (yay!), but when I open largish files (>= 20kB) it really chokes on it. Not on the conversion from bytes to hex string, but (you guessed it) displaying it in the JTextArea. I've tried a couple of things. Make it a Thread (so it can update a pretty progress bar), I tried appending the data in sections, instead of one giant setText().... No go.
    Here's what I have so far:
    import javax.swing.JTextArea;
    public class DisplayThread extends Thread
        private static final int BUFSIZE = 100000;
        private FileEditor parent;
        private JTextArea textArea;
        private StringBuffer data;
        private ProgressDialog pd;
        public DisplayThread(FileEditor p, JTextArea jta, StringBuffer s, ProgressDialog pr)
            parent = p;
            textArea = jta;
            data = s;
            pd = pr;
        public void run()
            System.out.println("starting DisplayThread");
            long time = System.currentTimeMillis();
            textArea.setText("");
            int len = data.length();
            for(int i=0;i<len;i+=BUFSIZE)
                int n = (i+BUFSIZE<len)?i+BUFSIZE:len;
                textArea.append(data.substring(i,n));
                pd.setProgress(i, len);
            System.out.println("It took " + (System.currentTimeMillis() - time) + "ms by buffering");
            time = System.currentTimeMillis();
            textArea.setText(data.toString());
            System.out.println("It took " + (System.currentTimeMillis() - time) + "ms directly");
            textArea.setEditable(true);
            pd.setVisible(false);
            System.out.println("finishing DisplayThread");
    }At the moment I've got both the "bit-by-bit" display method, and the "one-shot-setText()" methods going to compare times, but check out these times for a 900k file...
    It took 673439ms by buffering
    It took 137628ms directly
    For the first one, that's over 11 mins!!!!
    Anyway, I did searches on what to do in this scenario, one answer was Don't!, the other was "only display what's necessary".
    So...
    I've tried to create a "BufferedJTextArea", and only set the text according to what will be visible in the scrollpane/scrollbar, but it's not working (all sorts of complications with adding a scrollbar to a JTextArea, or adding a JTextArea to a scrollPane....)
    Also, even after it loads all the data into the JTextArea, it takes it's sweet time to repaint...
    Any ideas on how to make it faster? Continue with the "BufferedJTextArea" (if that's the case, that'll be the next question)?
    Or give up and warn ppl not to load files larger than about 15k?
    Thanks ppl,
    Radish21

    But with a JList, you can only have one column, right? That'd mean I have to break up the String with \n all over the place.
    I did look at JTable first, and even tried to use one, but I've never used them before, and now I know why. Too damn difficult.
    I'm getting closer now, but still having hiccups (or is it hiccoughs? :)
    I had to make the class a JPanel itself, that adds a BufferedTextArea to a JScrollPane... it works, so why fix it? ;)

                super();
                setLineWrap(true);
                setVisible(true);
                fontMetrics = getFontMetrics(getFont());
            public void adjustmentValueChanged(AdjustmentEvent e)
                val = e.getValue();
                adjustView();
            public void setText(String s)
                data = s;
                len = data.length();
                startIndex = 0;
                if(len <= BUF_SIZE)
                    endIndex = len;
                    super.setText(data);
                else
                    endIndex = -1;
                    val = 0;
                    adjustView();
            protected void adjustView()
                if(endIndex == -1 && startIndex == 0)
                    endIndex = java.lang.Math.min(len, BUF_SIZE);
                    super.setText(data.substring(startIndex, endIndex));
                    return;
                if(len <= BUF_SIZE)
                    return;
                int startLine = scrollPane.getVerticalScrollBar().getValue() / getRowHeight();
                int linesVisible = // haven't worked out what goes here yet
                // Some way to work out whether I need to adjust things.
    }Anyway, thanks for the tips, but I think you're right, I'll stick with the BufferedJTextArea....
    If you have any ideas about checking for if the view is about to get out of range, let me know. Also, I've tried setting the vertical scrollbar's maximum value, but it ignores me (because I need it to be reflect the entire data string, not just the segment displayed). If you have any ideas, they'd be greatly appreciated.

  • 60GB ipod, too much content for 80GB Macbook, with a twist

    I have searched through the discussions and couldn't find an answer, so here goes (quite frankly, I couldn't decide how to search for an answer to this question)...
    I have a 60GB 5G ipod; 40-50GB of content (music, TV, podcast, movies); an 80GB Macbook.
    I want to put 100% of my content on my ipod (and have it not be deleted when I update daily), but I can't afford to leave all that content on my Macbook. HOWEVER (the twist), I do not want to just move my iTunes Music folder to an external hard drive, as I want access to some things (music, podcasts, etc) when my Macbook is divorced from the external hard drive (while traveling, etc.).
    So, is there any way to have to have my cake and eat it too?!? Thanks in advance...
    Macbook, 60GB 5G iPod   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    You can delete songs from your iTunes/computer hard drive after transferring them to the iPod, and for this you need to set your iPod to manage the iPod content manually.
    However, this is an extremely risky option because when (and not if) there comes a time to restore your iPod, which is a very common fix for iPod problems, then all the music would be erased. If you no longer have the music in iTunes (or any other back up), then all that music would be lost.
    What if the iPod were lost/stolen/needed repair? Again, the music would lost. I strongly recommend a back up, and if computer hard drive space is in short supply, you should seriously consider an external hard drive. They are not expensive, and the cost is well worth it when compared to the loss of all your precious music.
    At the very least back up your music to either cd or dvd before deleting it, particularly any purchased music/videos, as this would have to be bought again if it were lost. See these about backing up media.

  • Too Much Music for iPod Nano

    Hello everyone,
    I need help adding music to my Nano.
    I used to have a first generation Shuffle, which automatically chose music from the iTunes library when I plugged it in. It tended to choose music randomly so that I had different songs from many albums.
    I now have a Nano and would like iTunes to randomly pick music to add to my Nano (since my music library is too large to fit on the Nano). However, when I plug the Nano in, it creates a playlist, but chooses entire albums.
    Is there a way to make this more random? I thought it'd be neat to sync the Nano with the Party Shuffle Playlist, but iTunes won't let me.
    If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanks!
    Allison

    How about a workaround which requires two steps to update:
    Create a single playlist, set it to Play Count is less than 900000, limit to the number of GB or number of songs that will fit, selected by "Random". Sync your iPod to this list.
    When you want a new random list, edit the Smart Playlist and change random to "Album", choose "OK", then edit it again and set it back to random for a new list of songs to sync.
    Hope that helps
