Is Final Cut is killing my firewire cards?

I have had a Lacie 800 firewire card for about 10 months and just the other day, it went out on me as I tried to do some digitizing from my video camera. I hadn't used the camera for a few months but had used it numerous times before with no problem. But, after numerous attemps at switching PCI slots, still nothing.
Today I went and bought another card and when I first signed on with two external drives and my camera attached, it seemed to work fine. Then, about 45 minutes into digitizing my FCP froze and when I rebooted, no more fire wire card again.
Anyone else have this problem? I can't keep buying cards obviously at $80 a pop. There are no new changes in my computer so what could cause this?

Could also be a short in either the Firewire cable or one of the two ports.
During the several weeks/months that you did no Firewire transfers did you;
1. crimp 2. drop 3. immerse in liquid 4. use as a leash for your dog; your Firewire cable?
It may turn out that you are fortunate to only have lost $80 dollars... it could have been the machine that card is plugged into.

  • Can bad ram kill your firewire card

i recently installed bad ram in my eMac
it was a 512 module given to me by my boss, we use macs at work so i figured it was safe. it was the right speed for my mac and it seemed great!
well, I installed and everything was going awesome. Until all of my pictures dissipeared out of iPhoto. they were still on the HD but vanished from the program. so I ran the hardware test and bad ram. I replaced it with the old ram and everything was fine, until I tried to dump some footage into iMovie.
Now iMovie will not reconize my camera and i am scared as i use this program the most. could this ram have killed my firewire card?
    Please Help

It sounds to me as though your problem goes beyond bad RAM. While a faulty RAM module may cause issues, they are generally performance issues. Disappearing photos sounds like a hard disk (or other) problem. Did Apple Hardware Test uncover any other issues? If there was something wrong with your FireWire inputs, Hardware Test should indicate so.
Try deleting your iMove preferences file (User/Library/Preferences/com.apple.imovie.plist). Log out and back in again; open iMove and try to reconnect your camera. Also, check with your camera's manufacturer to be sure that there are no firmware or driver updates for your model.
Report back, and we can take it from there.

  • Final Cut Express not recognizing firewire

I recently deleted my hardrive on my '04 iBook, and reinstalled all my software. I have Final Cut Express version 2.0.2, and upon reinstalling it, and firing it up for the first time, with my XL2 on and attached via firewire, the "External A/V" window pops up, and says "Unable to locate the following devices..." referring to the firewire connection. Now that always pops up when nothing's plugged in that's turned on, but this is the first time it's ever done this when my camera is plugged in and on. I went through every NTSC firewire setting on the "Easy Setup" window, but nothing changed. iMovie reads my XL2 just fine with the same firewire cable. This problem did not occur before I clean out my hardrive, and reinstalled everything. But prior to reinstallation my "capture" function was freezing up after 5 minutes, and said my "startup disc" was full. Any ideas on what the current problems is?

I'm experiencing the same problem. I have a macbook pro 2.4 GHz, using a Canon HV20. When I enter FCE is prompts me saying "Unable to locate following device: Apple Firewire NTSC." However using imovie, everything works fine, I'm able to capture images simply by turning on my camera.
Not sure if its a problem with my FCE, because I've tried to edit in FCE using video from imovie and it gives me an error message constantly.
    any ideas?

  • Using Final Cut Logo on Business Card

I am a video editor of trainer of Final Cut Pro and I am currently designing a new business card. Does anyone know the legality of including the Final Cut Logo on the business card(i.e. the Final Cut Studio Box image or a screenshot from within the program). I would love to use these images if possible as it tells prospective clients a lot without getting too wordy.
    Any thoughts or ideas,
    Much obliged,
    Adam

As an Apple Certified Pro end-user for both Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio Pro I can confirm that you do in fact need to be a certified pro in order to use the Apple logo on your business card/website. And you can only use one logo despite multiple certifications.
When you pass the certification exam they Email you a link where you can download the logos and there's also a form that explains how and where you can use the logos. You also get a nifty certificate in the mail that you can frame and hang in your office. FWIW you can not use the logo on a resume. Only websites and business cards, in this instance. (you can use the Apple Authorized reseller/etc. logos on ads too)
    Hope this helps you out...

P.S. My Motion certification is next on the list oh and I challenged the exams also (not to brag or anything, but I earned it)

  • Video cameras no longer connecting to Final Cut Express

I have two video cameras (Sony TRV-25 and Sony HDV-A1U) which are no longer connecting to Final Cut Express through the firewire (4-pin to 800). I get the "unable to initialize" message. What's weird is that they were working fine just last month.
I'm on a relative new iMac, running 10.6, FCE 4.
I've double and triple-checked the settings on the cameras (i.e., HDV and iLink output settings), and I've selected the appropriate settings in Easy Setup in FCE (1060i60 for the HDV, NTSC-DV for the TRV).
I also reset video devices under the View menu.
Just for kicks, I tried connecting the TRV-25 to my old Mac. I had no problems at all. [The old Mac won't work with the HDV camera, so I didn't bother trying that.]
There are no other firewire devices connected to the Mac. There is an external drive that I use for capturing the video files that is attached through one of the USB ports.
I went and bought another firewire cable just to make sure, but got the same results.
For what it's worth, I also could not get the cameras to be recognized in iMovie.
Is there anything else I should try?
    Thanks!

When I looked in System Profiler and click on the firewire line, it just said something about maximum speed 800 MB per second or whatever. Should it actually have the camera listed there? Is that the right way to check?
The firewire is 4-pin (iLink) to 800, and there are no other devices connected.

  • Graphic problem with Final cut pro X

    Hello
Since some days I have graphical problems, it seems it is related to final cut pro X (10.0.8), all other programms are running well.
When I import events to my project the graphic is ok:
After modification, example: here stabilization on, I have some colored pixels in the preview:
After this happens once, I found some colored pixel also in other programs or on the background picture.
I'm not sure if I have a problem with final cut or with the graphic card. When I use my iMac without final cut, I found no problems
Can anybody help me? Thank you

    Thank you for you answer.
I have 12 GB Memory and Final Cut Pro X was working properly until now.
The problem occure already at the preview windows, as soon as I close Final cut the graphic background looks good again.
I found that I have a similar problem also with iMovie, so I think it is maybe a hardware and not a software problem.
The hardware test does not show any problems, do you know another method to test the graphic card?

  • Connect Handycam Sony DCR-DVD101 to MBP and Final Cut

Hi everyone. I´m trying to connect my handycam to a MacbookPro to capture some video in Final Cut Pro. The problem is that the handycam only have USB cables to connect to the macbook. Do I have to buy another cable with Firewire?... Is Final Cut only compatible with Firewire?. what can I do? Please I would appreciate some advice...
    Thanks in advance.

macbook pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

DVD Camcorders are not compatible with Final Cut Pro. You can still import the footage with an analog video input device which converts the analog output of your camcorder to firewire. I don't have any experience with these.
As far as consumer camcorders go, if it has a hard drive, flash memory, or DVD to record the video, it most likely won't work with Final Cut (Pro or Express) or iMovie.

  • Final Cut Studio 6/7 Capture Idle/Error

I've been using Final Cut Pro with Panasonic P2 cards for years, log and transfers have been no problem until today.
The video files playback fine in Log & Transfer, but as soon as I try to add the selection to queue and capture, it hangs and I get the red exclamation point and nothing is captured.
What's mistifying is that the individual clips playback fine in the Log & Transfer window, but they can't capture once they're in the Queue.
    I use FCP 6.0.6 and FCP 7.0.3
Filmed on Panasonic AG-HPX500P in 720 on E-Series and R-series cards.
I tried capturing from a P2 deck, the camera and files I copied onto my hard drive.
    All have the same failure.
Has anyone experienced similar issues and found a solution?
    Thank You,
    -Tsubasa

So you have both fcp6 and 7 installed on the same system?  That might be the problem.  Just a guess.  Do some searching here and google having both installed on the same system to see if there are any problems.
You say this system worked fine up until today.  Have you installed any other programs or done any software updates?  I strongly recommend having a clone of your startup drive so that if things go south, you can quickly restore your system to its working state.
    Try deleting your fcp preferences

  • Installed New Firewire 400 card - Final Cut Pro unexpected quit.

I just installed a new PCI firewire card in an earlier model dual G5 tower. Final cut pro now won't even get to the splash screen. All I get is an unexpected quit with the following message.
You can tell from this message that it is quitting right around when it looks at the firewire bus. I have a drive plugged into the card and it works fine. When I uninstall the card, final cut starts up fine.
Any ideas. My thought is probably a cheapo firewire card, should I upgrade to Lacie or something?
    Thanks

  • Playing Russian Roulette with Firewire 400 drives and Final Cut Pro

oh boy! this has been a fun week!
I would love to ask the advice of the group about checking the firwire
ports on my computer, and also on the separate external drives.
Here is what has been going on.
Final Cut Pro 5 starts up and then starts to pinwheel.
but in short here is the result, I have recently lost 2 external
FIREWIRE 400 drives, one by LaCie that is my newest drive of the
group, it is 160gb 2 port FW400, and another by ProMax which also has
2 FW400 ports. the lacie was the first to go and is just not mounting
and does not show up using any of my Disk Utility software (even the
heavy duty stuff like DATA RESCUE II or Disk Warrior), I am thinking
that both ports are bad(maybe fried by another bad port on my tower?)I
can hear it when i boot it up and it sounds normal with the same
routine sounds, but it just doesn't mount, nor show up, so is this the
    ports?fried?
Now, on my tower I have the following setup - 2 FW400 ports that are
STOCK that came with the TOWER G4 when I bought it. There is also a
FIREWIRE 400 card which has 3 ports. In the past I have used all the
ports for drives, and for a printer and a scanner in my studio.
Everything mounted and worked properly. Then, recently I moved the
drives and the tower to another location(in the room and no I didn't
drop or shake anything) and replugged everything in again, probably in
different slots but upon boot the external firewire drives didn't mount.
I had to UN PLUG them and then RE INSERT them by trial and error(which
I thought normal as I have done this when using these drives with my
laptop, until I got them to mount. they all did mount. However, once
up an running I started Final Cut Pro 5, and it started to get a
PINWHEEL for more than reasonable and if forced me to RESTART the
    computer.
The next time, one of the HARDDRIVES (the LaCie 160gb) was no longer
mounting, and I tried to change firewire ports and on the stock and
also on the card for fear that the 3rd party card might be faulty.
I even ran APPLEs HARDWARE Utility and it gave no results as to
anything faulty on the firewire ports. It just said they were there.
Both stock and the PCI firewire card.
Next, I tried to mount this LaCie 160gb onto another computer, with no
results.....it now acts as if both ports are faulty, again, I hear the
drive spinning and going through its initial startup, which sounds
exactly like the other drive, but it never mounts. which is odd...what
is your idea about this drive? and how to save it?
is there a way to take the drive out of the casing and test it in my
other LaCie160gb that is currently working?
2nd, this is where it gets funky, then upon starting Final Cut Pro,
the pinwheel reappeared now with another firewire drive a PROMAX 160gb
that was plugged into the STOCK FW 400 port (on the tower) starting to
show a RED light(not good), however, after restart, I didn't see the
PROMAX drive mount, but I was able to load it up with DATA RESCUE II,
and it is doing a QUICK SCAN to save the DATA on that disk......
now I have backed up most of this data, but the problem now is not the
data, it is whether or not to even plug any of my other drives into
any of these FW ports until I can test them for faultiness.
A friend told me of another friend having a problem where a firewire
port was frying drives as soon as they plugged them into the certain
port. How can you figure this out without re-acting like 'Deerhunter?'
This feels like playing Russian Roulette......if you get my drift?
How do you check any ports for such foul play?
Thanks in advance for your support....
    makin

well, now I am finding out that the culprit is I think the POWER MAC g4 itself.
For it has been blowing the firewire ports over time by frying them with power.
    Has anyone had this happen?
My Power Mac g4 will not shut down.
    It powers itself back up.
I end up having to press the POWER button and holding it, but this sends power to the firewire ports and I can hear them turning on.
so all this time I had just dealt with the issue
Apple had seemed to blame it on a 3rd party MATROX card in the PCI slot.
But, now that has long been taken out of the equation.
The only thing left is that the 17inch MONITOR is plugged into the POWER MAC and for some reason it is keeping a charge?
Can anyone help me in this matter?
As this has haunted me for 5 years with this machine, and I have probably fried more drives than I care to mention.
I just want my computer to SHUT DOWN when I tell it to.
is that too much to ask?
Might the POWER SUPPLY be at fault?
What in God's name could keep this ******* of a computer from shutting down?
I have no USB hubs or keyboards hookedup
the only thing is the MONITOR itself....that you can press its button to shut down etc.
I would be honored to know what this is as APPLE CARE never could figure it out
I didn't want to go through the hassle of taking out the RT MAC card, and just either left the machine on, or Unplugged the thing....
that is a nasty way to shut down a computer is it not?
much thanks to any one who can help me to figure this out?
    thanks

  • Final Cut Express 4 (HD) -- needs firewire?

I have a pretty nice camcorder, a Canon HG10.  But it uses a USB wire to transfer film to a computer (has no firewire).  I bought Final Cut Express (FCE) 4 (HD) and now I have been told that FCE 4 only can work with a firewire?  Is that possible?  I don't understand as the USB/firewire is just the mechanism to transfer the firm and FCE is really the editing software.  With this camera film is transferred (by the USB wire) adequately/quickly into iMovie etc.
Any comments/workarounds would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Use Log & Transfer with either the USB-connected camera or a card reader. FCE will convert to AIC to enable you to edit your AVCHD footage.

  • USB or Firewire for Final Cut Pro and or Premiere Pro

I have a macbook, and i need to do a crap load of final cut/ premiere rendering, and i need to get a external for the capture scratch and ect.
But what i want to know is, what one to use? USB or Firewire 400,
I was originally gonna get a LaCie Rugged, cuass its buss powered and extremely portable, but my friends told me, seeing ive got only one firewire port, im gonna have to get something like the 320gb o5 500gb LaCie, which has two firewires on the hard drive, although its not that portable.
So i asked, why cant i get a USB external, that was a dumb thing to ask. They gave me reasons like USB speed isn't constant, not secure stuff like that.
So what should i do, and which is the best one to get?
    Cheers

    Don't know about PPro.
For FCP, you really should have FW. The problem you'll run into, is that the Mac Book only has 1 FW bus. It doesn't matter how many ports the computer or external have, they will all run on the same FW bus. And I don't believe the MacBook has the capability of using an Express34 card (or any other FW expandability). I could be wrong, but don't think so.
One solution is to capture directly to your internal harddrive, then copy the files over to the external FW drive. Others have posted about daisy-chaining your camera/deck through the external FW drive, but I've not done that and can't tell you how.
Even capturing to the internal may not work, depending on what format you're capturing.
