Is Firewire broken in 10.4.9 (Intel)?

My iPod photo, that has been connected to my Intel iMac 1.83, 2 MB RAM for nearly a year, became unreliable upon the OS X 10.4.9 and iTunes 7.1 update. Syncing with iTunes and copying files to and from the iPod in the Finder became unreliable, with lots of beach balls.
The Firewire cable was used with PowerBook G4 with no issues. An USB2 cable was introduced into the Intel iMac and it works fine.
Restoring the iPod to factor specs had no effect.
About the only test I have not tried (that I can think of) is bringing another FW device onto the iMac as I do not have one handy.
Do I have a software issue? A hardware issue? Any thoughts?

I have had the system hang on an Intel iMac running OS 10.4.9, with latest Security Updates, after importing an image into Photoshop CS3 via firewire connection to an Epson scanner. No problem previously with the firewire scanner on an iMac G5 running OS 10.4.9. Since everything was more or less updated at the same time, not sure where the problem lies. The scan is complete and just as the image opens in Photoshop, the system hangs, and Force-Quit doesn't work. The Force Quit dialogue box shows 'Photoshop is not responding'. I've had to manually shut down the system by holding the power button down. This has all happened within the last few days, and the issue appears intermittently--some scans complete normally.

  • Older iSight (Firewire 400) on New Mac Mini Intel (Firewire 800)?

Hi! I have an older iSight camera (circa 2003), model number A1023/EMC no. 1950, which uses the older FIrewire 400. It was purchased with one of the first gen Mac Mini's (PowerPC) which I still have.
I've upgraded and now have a new Mini with an Intel Core 2 Duo, and the newer Firewire 800 port. I have a Firewire 400->800 adapter, and when I plug the iSight in, the green light on the camera lights up, but then goes off. The system doesn't recognize the camera (System Profiler/Hardware/FIrewire). iChat doesn't see a camera.
    This is the adapter:
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002HMTV1I/ref=oxya_ohproduct
Under the profiler/firewire, I see " Firewire Bus: Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec" but no entries for the camera.
Is the problem in the adapter? The computer, or the camera? Is there a way to force the Firewire 800 port speed down to 400? Don't know what to do. Thanks for any advice! --michael

    Hello michael
Connecting your iNtel min's Firewire to any Firewire 400 cable automatically sets the correct speed.
If your iSight and cable will work with other Macs and if Firewire 800 devices will work with your new mini, perhaps your new adapter is faulty.
My method for verifying external iSight function is explained here:
      http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage4.html
You will need to add your adapter to the other connectivity devices (ports & cables) that must be tested.
If other Firewire devices can be recognized by your new mini, the next tests I would suggest is to connect your adapter, FW-800 cable, and iSight to your old mini to see whether it still works there. If not, and if you have reset your iNtel mini's Firewire ports, the cable or adapter you have may be defective.
If iSight works with the new cable and adapter on the old mini but not with the iNtel one, apply all relevant suggestions from Apple's iSight Troubleshooting article to your new mini:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
The reset suggested there sometimes restores proper iSight function.
One other possibility is that a different brand of FW800 cable might work for you. Depending on which FW800 cable you are using, this thread may be of interest:

It appears that my Firewire connection from an intel imac 2GHz seems to be down. It is not showing up in the "More information" section in the in "About This Mac". Is this a software or hardware or cable issue?

  • Mac G4 external firewire broken

I've recently encountered this problem which caused me to lose a lot of data. The setup is mac mini g4 + external firewire hard drive from Freecom.
What is happening is that read/write operations do not result in copy fidelity. Here's a terminal log to illustrate:
    ariel:Freecom FW 1TB kaitlin$ cp another.avi another1.avi
    ariel:Freecom FW 1TB kaitlin$ ls -lh another*
    -rw-r--r-- 1 kaitlin staff 176M 2 Sep 11:48 another.avi
    -rw-r--r-- 1 kaitlin staff 176M 2 Sep 12:07 another1.avi
    ariel:Freecom FW 1TB kaitlin$ md5 another.avi
    MD5 (another.avi) = 6eedf37d80b81f61f0c4a8f71dfea57c
    ariel:Freecom FW 1TB kaitlin$ md5 another1.avi
    MD5 (another1.avi) = b8cffac964d494279a508f11151ee529
So basically the original and its copy have different hashcodes which means they're not the same file, so I can't trust the firewire. It does this consistently with any file read/write operation to/from any destination. The machine does NOT behave like this with external USB drives or the internal drive.
I've got two computers, both G4 1.5 GHz of the same era (Mac mini and Powerbook 15"), and the same symptoms appear on both machines, as well as when hooking the drive up to a FW800 port.
I tried connecting the drive to a friend's Intel Mac Mini, and it does NOT exhibit this behaviour. So I'm suspecting it's a recent software update that caused the drive to fail, since I have used the same firewire disk for a few months without any problems.
My question is, has anyone else had this experience? and if so, is there a fix?

This problem seems to be with Mac OS X 10.5.8. I've reinstalled a clean Mac OS X 10.5.0 and the issue doesn't occur.

  • FireWire broken since.....?

Anyone else got problems with importing DV via FireWire?
I do not know since when things got broken but last night I tried to import a DV tape via FireWire as I did many many times before. But iMovie does not 'see' my Sony cam anymore. I checked the FireWire in System Profile and it does not show my cam. I tried two different Sony cam's (dcr-tvr12 and dcr-hc44e) and two brand new FireWire cables. Nothing works!
What is going on? I do not understand where or what busted the connectivity

    Here's a bit more info
I'm currently using Snow Leopard where my previous imports where all done in Leopard. Reading some fora I read that Apple stopped supporting FireWire400, I guess this could cause the problem.
    Anyone having the same issue?

I have the proper fire wire cable.
How do I do this? Isn't there a special start up key - combo I do in order just to access each other's HD?

  • Is my Firewire broken?

Neither my iPod dock nor speakers are working through my MacBook's firewire port. Is there a way to see if it's fried or fix this?

    HI,
Please click My Settings on the right side of this page and fill out you profile. We need which Mac and which Mac OS X you are running. It helps us trouble shoot for you. Thanks!
Shut down your MacBook. Disconnect the iPod and speakers. Wait about ten minutes, restart the MacBook and connect your iPod. See if it mounts on the Desktop and is recognized by iTunes.
If that doesn't help, try resetting the SMC, instructions here.

  • Vsync broken with i915 since [mesa/intel-dri/libgl]-7.10

    Hi,
    I have a netbook with intel i945gme.
Since last update with mesa 7.10 running glxgears is not smooth and the fps are ~ 1/2 of the screen refresh rate.
    chris@chriseee ~ % glxgears
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
    192 frames in 5.1 seconds = 37.623 FPS
    146 frames in 5.0 seconds = 29.159 FPS
    ^C
    130 chris@chriseee ~ %
But it does work without vsync. It is really smooth then (and proves that the fps are higher then 1/2 of the screen refresh rate when not limited):
    chris@chriseee ~ % vblank_mode=0 glxgears
ATTENTION: default value of option vblank_mode overridden by environment.
ATTENTION: default value of option vblank_mode overridden by environment.
    1633 frames in 5.0 seconds = 326.594 FPS
    1639 frames in 5.0 seconds = 327.623 FPS
    ^C
    130 chris@chriseee ~ %
    I have no xorg.conf and no ~/.drirc.
    Can anyone reproduce?

Gusar wrote:Can you then report issues in another app?
For me, personally? YouTube / Flash and even Neverball and Osmos. If I let the mouse idle, the performance begins to "jerk" a bit. It has gotten better with each new iteration of the intel driver, but it was noticeably worse with 2.10 through 2.12. Now it's not really too big of a deal (but it's still worse than 2.9.1 and earlier.)
I understand this "glxgears is not a benchmark" argument, but it does allow you to observe a change. For instance, running glxgears with intel driver 2.9.1 would not change framerate based on idle/active cursor. Then with 2.10+, it suddenly does, so it at least marks a noticeable difference that you can refer to if you have other issues. "I noticed such and such after I updated from version X to version Y. Maybe that's why this crashes after the recent updates."

  • Non-firewire MacBook via USB to Intel Mini as External Hard Drive

I'm working with the aluminum MacBook that doesn't have a firewire and a Core 2 Duo Intel Mini. Is it possible to connect the Mini to the MacBook via USB and have the Mini act as an external hard drive for the MacBook?
If so is it possible as well to do it the other way around; the Mini as the boot drive and the MacBook as the external hard drive?
    Thanks.

    Wesley
I really think there is no way to connect a computer in target mode to the Unibody Macbook which has no Firewire port.
I did the stupid thing to plug a USB2toUSB2 cable into a brand new Macbook and it fried the USB port (which are soldered on the motherboard) thereby loosing my computer.
I still don't know IF I made a mistake or IF the cable was the culprit.
see this post about my mishap

So my advice...do your data trasfer via Ethernet or external HD or take out the old disks.

  • Epson Stylus Photo R1800: successful Firewire install on Intel iMac?

Has anyone been able to succesfully install the Epson Stylus Photo R1800 on an Intel iMac using the Firewire connection?
After installing the Intel drivers from the Epson website, if I connect the printer via the USB cable the printer and associated driver show up in the Printer Setup Utility just fine. But if I connect the printer via the Firewire cable I just see a printer named "E" in the printer setup utility and no R1800 driver at all.
Epson support just keeps instructing me to uninstall and reinstall the driver.
I've hunted around in the discussions here and have noticed some people having trouble with this particular printer, but I've been unable to establish whether anyone has been succesful with the Intel iMac/Firewire combination.
iMac 20" Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I am printing with a firewire connection. I have an intel iMac. Prior to buying the R1800, I checked out Epson's site for new intel printer drivers. A new update has been posted with an alert about the bundled software that comes with the R1800-don't install it! And if it was installed there's an uninstall walk through. The software did not come anywhere near my new imac. I downloaded the new software and I am printing with a firewire connection. I have one issue with the download. I can't print CDs because the application is on the original software cd. I contacted Epson and asked if I could install just the CD print software and not the printer driver. I will be waiting for an answer. I installed the software on a powerPC imac tiger. The printer is firewire connected and there are no printing problems, I can even print CD labels.
    I will post epson's response.

  • External drive enclosure, USB 2 mounts, firewire invisible!

I have a venus ds3 external enclosure with a 300GB 7200rpm WD hard drive inside it. The enclosure works fine with windows and usb2, and it is also detected and mounted on usb2 on my mini (1.25ghz ppc mini). However, nothing happens when I try to use the firewire connection on the mini. In system profiler, I see:
    FireWire Device Tree
    FireWire Bus
    Unknown Device
It is an oxford fw911 chipset, and I did run the updater to FW911V4_00_0000Release.bin, but still no firewire action. The updater saw the enclosure via firewire on my mac, but os x will not see the drive itself.
Am I doomed to using usb2? Would it still be possible to boot from this drive on usb2 instead of firewire?
mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   upgraded to 512MB ram

    problem is
you cannot use 300 gigs as fire wire on any mac mini
the max you can use is only 200 gigs before mac os x
    no longer recongnizes the drive
so you need a 200 gig hard drive sorry
Is there some documentation that you could cite on the 200gb barrier?
I'm also interested if it's a ppc-mini only problem or if it affects other systems as well.
I have a 250gig firewire drive on my wife's intel mac mini
and it works fine. Even if it only regognized on 200gig and
I didn't notice, it mounted and worked.
I now have it partitioned into 2 samller volumes. So, if it's
a problem on the PPC mac, then he should be able to
partition the drive and make it work.
I just now tried partitioning it again via usb, and made two 137gb partitions (or whatever odd number it came out to be), and it was still not recognized when I switched over to firewire.
If it turns out that john was right, and nothing over 200gb will work, can I still get some use out of the drive? Can I install applications on it or move the swap files over to it?

  • Question pertaining to firewire 400 vs. 800

I am currently in the process of learning the Mac world. I have been using my wife's iBook for sometime and am waiting for things to work out for a new MacBook. So as I embark on my switch over from the Dark-side to Mac I was wondering, if firewire 800 is the new big deal, why wouldn't Apple have used it instead of the 400 in its newest books?
Is there something that I don't know about the actual use of 800 vs. 400, or does Apple possibly know of common problems with the 800 that we don't?
    -Al-

I think Apple will remove itself from firewire over time. USB2 and intel is their direction. Firewire 800 is not all that its cracked up to be. Its cretainly not 2x as fast as FW 400. I have all three and mostly use FW 400 because it is the most convinient to use. USB2 on a Mac is significantly slower than on a windows machine although the intel Macs have better USB2 throughput. I'll still use my firewire 400 devices and some time in the future migrate to USB2.

  • A 5.25 firewire external that works?

Anyone know of a 5.25 firewire external enclosure that works with intel macs? I had a few, macally style, and they only work usb-2....
    any help greatly appreciated.
    thanks

Have a look at this 5.25" enclosure (link). OWC are a well respected Mac supplier. The only downside is that it seems to have an ATA5 bus in it meaning hard drives are limited to 128GB but I guess as you want a 5.25" enclosure you rather have an optical drive in mind.
Alternatively look at the whole package (link).

  • Audio Interface (Presonus) on Intel iMac - Control software not visible

I'm trying to use core audio compatible Presonus Inspire 1394 firewire audio interface on my new Intel iMac. My main problem is the only controls for the interface are onscreen, but software for said control panel doesn't visibly open. The icon for the device oscillates side-to-side in my dock, and trying to move the inspire file from the desktop reveals that "the app is open." However, I can not see the control panel or any other evidence the file is open. With the help of Presonus tech, I've discovered a couple of things:
    1. The device syncs with my iMac, as evidenced by its presence in the Audio Midi Setup panel, plus
    2. Play back of a song in iTunes goes through the interface's headphone jack just fine.
My install procedure has revealed two things, also:
When I put the software disk in, open the Inspire control panel file, then the control panel is visible. However, when I then plug in the firewire device, I get an eternally revolving beachball and eventually have to force quit (new to mac, but I figure that is my only option at that point.)
However, if I plug in the firewire first, then try to open the control panel file, I get the open-but-not-visibly-so problem I first mentioned (appears in dock, etc.).
Does anyone have any suggestions? Has anyone experienced a newly loaded app appearing in the dock but not visibly open?
I've tried restarting mac, reinstalling sw and device, downloading said software from the Personus web site (vs the disc supplied version), and both repairing and verifying HD permissions. I am at a loss. Presonus said the device is plug-and-play with core audio. a check reveals the device is PowerPC, but they said it should run on intel mac too, based on their assurances from apple personnel and other stuff I didn't understand (it is an OS X issue, not platform...or something).
    Thanks for any suggestions.

  • USB 2.0 vs FireWire 800

I just got a 500 LaCie d2 Quadra and I don't know if I should use the USB or the 800 FireWire connection for backing up with Time Machine. Suggestions?

One of the best tests to see if a backup is good, is if it is bootable. Though that's only with clones. Time Machine isn't a clone per se. But with Powerbooks if you do clone, to test its bootability you'll need Firewire. USB can't boot PowerPC Macs. Only Firewire can with Mac OS X. Intel Macs on the other hand can boot via USB and Firewire.
