Is Firewire charging possible?

with the new Nano?

Unfortunately that article seems to be iffy as far as how much we can depend on it to be correct.
For example, the chart only shows "Classic" and does not differentiate between the older 80/160 models and the new 120GB model. The chart states iTunes 7.6 with the Classic. However if you go to the user manual for the new 120GB Classic, it states iTunes 8.0. Which is it?
In addition, both the new Classic and new Nano user guides make reference to USB1.1 being slow, implying it may work. The chart, on the other hand, claims it won't work at all (not even a #2 check indicating OK but USB2 recommended). Again, which is it?
And there are some models listed on there that I am fairly sure will charge off Firewire but are listed as not chargeable on Firewire.
So being listed as not chargeable on that charge may or may not be accurate.

I've got an old iPod interface in my car -- the kind that charged the first gen iPod touch via firewire.  Will the new lighting to 30 pin adapter convert firewire charging to USB?

doubt it as it would be as easy for the old charger to do that as the new ligthing
when a feature is removed then it would not make much sense to remove it and then reinterduce it later on with no benefit to the producer of the product

  • Can I charge my 2013 ipod classic with my original ipod classic firewire charger?

Can I charge my 2013 ipod classic with my original ipod classic firewire charger?

Nope, I'm sorry. iOS/iTunes only (you need a connection to your network, and the iPod classic doesn't have network capabilities).

  • No charging over USB after Using Firewire charging - 5G ipod

After charging two 5G ipods (30 & 60G models) with my sons firewire power adaptor (charging is supposed to be supported for 5G models just not syncing) both iPods have not been able to be charged using orginal USB cable supplied through macbook pro and have to be rebooted each time I want to sync them using USB (but still won't charge at same time).
I tried resetting etc...nothing. My connections now gives warning that "ipod is connected to a low-speed USB 1.1 port....you should connect it to a high-speed USB 2.0 port"... Trouble is all of my macs have usb 2.0 and since using the firewire (as a charger) it now thinks they are all USB 1.1 ports.
I have even disconnected the battery on the 30G model but this did not fix it either.
    Any suggestions?

Yes, After 5 hours of charging on my Mac, I plugged it in a brand new PC with USB 2.0 for 3 hours. I even tried reseting the iPod (in case it is a software problem...) When I took the iPod of the PC, the battery level was still at 70% and I still hadn't used the iPod Nano. He just refuses to charge to 100% and won't accept firewire charging. My next step is letting the iPod play for a while (untill batterylevel is red) and then recharging, see if it actually charges.
PS: Could it be that charging the Nano with a firewire adapter messed up anything?

  • Can I use my old firewire charger with my iPod Touch

I've recently got an 8GB iPod Touch which obviously only came with a USB cable to charge and sync with my laptop.
However, I've also got an old 4th generation 20GB iPod which came with a firewire lead that connects to a firewire mains charger. Can I use this to charge my iPod touch from the mains? Also can I use either the firewire or the old USB cable to connect to my laptop??
    Thanks very much.

You can use the firewire charger to connect your Touch to the mains. I use my old one and it works just fine. I suppose you can also use it to charge using your computer though I can't say I've tried. However, as the newer iPods don't have any kind of firewire circuitry, you can't use the firewire cable to sync you iPod.
    Best of luck.

  • USB v Firewire Charging Pin

I have read that the reason the iPhone 3G does not charge anymore on 'older' third party devices (i.e. car docks/ BOSE sounddock) is because the firewire charging pin is no longer used on the iPhone 3G. Now, does anyone know of an adapter that can be purchased that effectively 'swaps' the firewire to USB charging pin? This way, although not perfect, once can simply interpose this adapter between the iPhone 3G and the third party device to at least enable charging!

It appears that someone finally created a converter to allow older firewire-type devices to charge newer iPods/iPhones...

There are adapters for firewire to usb. Google is your friend.

  • IPod firewire charger and international travel

I have the Apple firewire charger (model A1070) and I was wondering if anyone knows if it's dual voltage capable for international travel? My digi cam and other chargers all say that they are, so they just need a simple plug adapter, but this charger only says 0.4A Max input.
I was hoping to use my same basic plug adapter for the iPod too, without having to buy the travel kit from Apple for $35.
    Thanks!

I've used mine overseas (Scotland, Spain) without any problems.

  • 2011 iMac, Lion, iPod 3G, FireWire - charge yes, sync no

I'm posting this in both the iPod community and in the iMac community. My appologies to any who are bother by this...
I just bought a 2011 iMac (21.5 w/ 2.5GHz i5) and it came w/ Mac OS X Lion (currently at 10.7.2). I have a WD MyBook Studio connected to the single FireWire 800 port w/ an appropriate cable. The MyBook works just fine all the time. I have an old 3rd generation iPod (3G, 10GB) that I have been using for years via FireWire 400 on various PowerMacs, older iMacs, a couple of eMacs and even a Dell running XP Pro. I just picked up a FireWire 800 to 400 adapter that I plugged into the second FireWire 800 port on the back of the MyBook external HD. My iPod started charging as soon as I plugged in my genuine Apple iPod-FireWire cable that came w/ the iPod. To my dismay, the iPod makes no indication that it is connected to a computer and the computer makes no indication that it is connected to and iPod. I unmounted my MyBook drive and disconnected the cable from the back of the iMac. I then plugged the FW800-400 adapter directly into the back of the iMac and plugged in my iPod. No change. The iPod charges just fine but won't connect in any way. To be certain that my iPod and cable are OK, I fired up my old eMac (I'm glad I haven't put it on eBay yet) and the iPod works great. I can sync w/ iTunes and use disk access to move files on and off the iPod from the Finder. My eMac is running 10.4.11.
My next attempt was to check if the iPod is compatible w/ Lion and the latest iTunes (10.5.3) so I used a USB cable that came w/ my much newer iPod Classic 120GB. The old iPod 3G connected right away, synced and everything is fine. I tried turning off disk use as a post online mentioned this as a possible solution. I ejected the iPod and moved over to the FireWire cable. No change, charges fine but no connection. I tried the cable yet again w/ the eMac and everything is fine. I even tried my iPod Mini. That too works great via the FireWire cable on the eMac but only charges via FireWire on the iMac. The iPod Mini works fine via USB as well. I also tried both the iPod 3G and Mini w/ the FireWire cable on my Dell w/ an off-brand FireWire PCI card. Works perfectly. Both iPods are up to date according to iTunes. Even iTunes 10.5.2 on the Dell under Win XP Pro says it's all up to date. Yes, they are "Windows" iPods so I can connect them to any computer in a pinch.
If I can use USB for all of my iPods, then why am I worrying about FireWire? It's all about convenience. The battery in my iPod 3G doesn't last all that long. When connecting via USB, it communicates but doesn't charge (it needs the 12V of FireWire to charge even though it has USB capability). Bad things can happen if the iPod's battery dies during syncing. Connecting via FireWire not only takes care of the battery issue but it is also noticeably and measurably faster syncing files over FireWire than USB (I've done an apples to apples comparison of this in the past). I also paid $1200 for this iMac and another $10+ for the FW800-400 adapter. It should work. Apple has a number of articles that say FW800 is 100% backwards compatible w/ FW400. I can't find anything out there that tells me it shouldn't work and lots of things telling me it should work fine.
Can anyone shed light on why my iPod won't connect via FireWire to my new iMac.

It sounds like your talking about iPod (dock connector) from 2003, And a Mini from 2004?

  • 4G iPod suddenly not recognized by Windows but firewire charges it.

All of a sudden today, my 4G iPod isn't recognized by either of my 2 computers through any firewire port. When connected, it charges and the charging icon blinks, but the iPod screen does not say "do not disconnect" like it's supposed to. It just remains in the regular menu mode (fully functional and playable through earphones). iTunes reports "No iPod Connected." My PCs do not see it as a drive, disk or an iPod. It was fine earlier today and nothing abnormal occurred to the iPod or to my computers.
One of my PCs is running Windows XP Pro and the other is running XP Media Center Edition.
    So far I have:
    -reset the iPod 10+ times
-tried the internal diagnostics (all passed)
    -putting it in "disk mode"
    -rebooted my PCs numerous times
-run iPod Updater to see if I was able to update or restore ( software just says "plug in an iPod to update it")
-tried several different ports on my PCs and several different iPod cables (with and without a dock)
-tried ending and restarting iPodService and iTunesHelper in Task Manager
-kicked myself for not extending the service plan with Apple
I don't think that there is a problem with the iPod port itself because it is able to charge through the firewire and AC adapter.
Can someone please offer a suggestion? I really don't have hundreds of dollars to pay for repair or buy a new one. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
    PC   Windows XP Pro

OK I fixed it. I'm not sure how or why it worked but it did. Here are the steps I used if it helps anyone:
    1. Reset charged iPod while not connected to machine.
    2. Put the iPod in Disk Mode.
    3. Connected it to the USB 2 port
    4. Windows saw it but itunes said it needed to be restored and could not see any of my music.
    5. Installed Anapod
    6. Anapod saw the iPod, and corrupted music files.
    7. Using Anapod's Manager Options (right click on tray)/ ipod devices/Recover Missing Tracks, the music was quickly restored and itunes was able to see the whole library
8.Using Copypod, I transferred all the music on the ipod to my computer.
    9. Restored the ipod with the latest update utility
    10. Transferred my music back to the ipod
    I hope this helps someone.

  • Firewire connection possible?

I actually have two questions. We have a foreign exchange student from Vietnam. He wants to buy an iPod. Our computers here at home include a G4 w/ 800 Mhz dual processors and an iMac G3 500 MHz. Both have USB 1 and FW 400. In the specs for the 5th generation iPods, it mentions only USB 2. Is this iPod also able to connect with FireWire? If yes, that problem is solved.
If no, is it possible to add USB 2 to the G4 dual-processor Mac? I'm guessing it is probably not possible to upgrade the little iMac to USB 2.
Our student will return home to Vietnam next summer. If he gets a Mac-formatted iPod, will it be possible to reformat it to Windows before he goes home so he can use it at home? (If not, our solution might be for us to buy the Mac-formatted iPod from him for ourselves and for him to then buy a PC-formatted iPod to take home with him.
We have no experience with iPods yet, and would like to find out about these issues before we take our student iPod shopping.
    Thanks,
    Linda

I did solve the problem -- bought a 5-port CompUSA brand USB 2 PCI card and a Belkin hub. It took 5 minutes or less to install the PCI card and software drivers. It worked perfectly first rattle out of the box.
I checked around for a combination USB 2 and Firewire 800 PCI card, but didn't find one available. There was a USB 2/Firewire 400 card, but my computer has FW 400 built-in. I wouldn't actually need or use FW 800 right now, but thought that as long as I was doing the USB 2 upgrade, I might as well do the other if such a card were available.
Otherwise, all if just fine now, and Khoa is happily learning the ins and outs of using his lovely new iPod.

  • Is Firewire Netboot possible?

I've got several Netboot server systems (10.5 and 10.6), and would like to offer Netboot across fw0 (firewire port) for various unrelated reasons.
The Firewire port is set to properly use a coherent IP #, it is on same subnet, it is enabled on Netboot (and I've got a good netboot image which is currently in use across other NICs), but I can't seem to target it for booting.
I've tried this on both Intel and Motorola systems, but neither is able to target it for boot OR see it in the "Startup Disk" PrefPanel.
In tracking it on logs, I have seen DHCP Discovery in action via a particular system's MAC address, but the system (server) never responded or never handed out an IP.
Does the pixiboot sequence toss out a request that is flipped off in OSX Server? Is this simply NOT possible?
I've found several threads questioning this, none actually answered, and all 'locked'. From other locked threads, it would seem that this may be a taboo topic, or is it just a great unknown??

    Hi
PXE Boot is not used on the platform. NetBoot uses BSDP, DHCP & TFTP.

  • Will an old iPod "firewire" charger work for my iPad

I have an old Firewire wall charger that came with my first iPod (wht 20gb). It is a 12 watt .64Amp output.
Will this work with my iPad. The iPad comes with a 10 watt charger.
Will the extra wattage harm the iPad?

When the current goes through the wire to the dock connection on the edge of the ipad, the devices does not "know" the shape or configuration of the connection to power at the other end. Clearly, the ipad does not interface with a firewire DATA port. However, there is an adapter cable for ipad devices with three ends: dock (to device); USB (to computer for data); FireWire (to AC wall adapter for power).
It seems to me that the 12V 1.0A output of the old wall adapter should be able to charge the ipad. I do not have the three legged cable, but do have a ipod power adapter with FireWire only connection. Has anybody tried this alternative to the 10V output wall adapter intended for the ipad?

  • Ipod update freeze, firewire problem, possible fix for many.

    Hello all,
I've been having a problem with my ipod 3rd gen updating in much the same way as many in this forum have throughout a number of topic threads.
    PROBLEM:
During song/playlist/content (not software update or restore) updating function one of two things would happen:
    - update would freeze at some point of the transfer (5, 74, 687 songs in to the update) and I would have to force quite itunes and, not being able to dismount the ipod through recommended procedure, I would physically dismount the ipod and receive a scolding for improper dismounting of device.
    - system would crash at some point of the transfer yielding the shaded screen and a prompt to restart the computer by depressing the front panel button for two seconds.
In each of the above cases, no matter how many songs that itunes thought it had transferred, I would only have about a dozen songs on the ipod itself, perhaps indicating a bottleneck on the G4 end of the transfer.
DEADENDS FOR ME THAT MAY STILL SOLVE PROBLEM FOR SOME:
    - swaping out cables
    - ipod software restore or restore to earlier version
    SOLUTION:
After contacting Apple support, I was led to the opinion that the problem was with the firewire port itself. This was confirmed by attaching my ipod with my cable to a roomates G5 resulting in a faultless transfer of his song library. I was ready to go out and purchase a new firewire PCI card but decided to research firewire problems in the G4 folder of Discussions. This is where I found the fix to my problem (see links at bottom of document). It would seem that Mac ports, both firewire and USB, have a tendency to bog down after awhile and need to be reset. This can be a addressed by one of three possible solutions. The first and easiest was the solution that worked for me (for other solutions please follow links at bottom of page):
    - powered down and disconnected all firewire and USB cables from the G4
    - disconnected power cable from G4 (for laptops I would guess that the battery would need to be removed, not sure if that causes any other problems though, please research)and let sit for about 30 minutes.
    - reconnected all cables and restarted computer. Ports should be reset at that point
    - I took the added measure to restart my computer once with nothing attached to USB and firewire ports and then powering down with front panel button before connecting cables and proceding with final restart.
    RESULT:
Faultless transfer of 37.6 gigs of content in less that 45 minutes.

    This worked perfectly for me!!!
    SOMEBODY PLEASE TAG THIS POST!!!
i have had the problem that everyone has posted about (i.e. - updated iTunes/iPod software and had the update/freeze problem, tried all solutions, to no avail, and was pretty much screwed.)
JUST DO EXACTLY WHAT HE SAYS TO DO (powermac g5, by the way):
    1) power down the computer
    2) unplug EVERYTHING (usb, firewire, power, monitor, etc.)
    3) leave unplugged for 30 minutes
    4) plug power back in
    5) power up from main power button
    6) wait for computer to start back up, then shut down from power button
    7) plug everything back in and power up
    8) restart once more for good measure
    9) update your ipod
    10) take a sigh of relief!
you are seriously a godsend...only one thing...I BOUGHT A NEW ONE ALREADY!!! i literally bought it the day that you posted this solution. After a month and a half of trying to fix this problem, i finally gave up and bought a 20GB iPod Photo with applecare...cost me about $380.
no matter, i think i'm gonna sell my "older" ipod to my mom or dad. they'll use it doing whatever they do. plus, that way, if there's any problem, i can fix it for them without feeling bad about screwing over some stranger.
thanks again, this solution worked perfectly.
