Is Force Quitting Bad?
Approximately 20% of the time My MB pro can't be awakened from sleep mode. Screen stays black regardless of what I do. So, To get my Pro going again I must force quit it using the power button, then restart. All's well then.
Is it true that force quitting with the power button is hard on the machine? Could it cause problems down the road?
I'd take it to an Apple genius bar to get the sleep issue resolved but the anomaly can't be reproduced at will.
"Force Quitting" is not a bad thing, but that's not what you're doing. A Force Quit is when you exit an application that's not responding (Apple menu > Force Quit or keyboard shortcut).
What you are doing is a forced shut down. That can cause problems down the road, because forced shut downs can cause damage to the directory structure of the hard drive. You can check that in Utilities > Disk Utility by clicking Verify Disk. Usually, Disk Utility can repair the problems (you need to boot from the Install DVD or an external drive to do that), but sometimes a more powerful 3rd party utility, Disk Warrior, is needed. Directory damage doesn't happen every time, or even all that frequently, but forced shutdowns do increase the likelihood.
So, your best bet is to get to the root of the problem, if you can.
One question - when you close the lid, do you wait for a little while for the MBP to actually go to sleep? Look at the light on the lid latch - while that light is on steadily, the MBP is writing the contents of RAM to the hard disk (Safe Sleep). The MBP is only asleep after that's done, and the light starts pulsating. If you just close the lid, grab your MBP and take off you may interrupt the process by triggering the sudden motion sensor on the hard drive. That is one common cause of sleep/wake issues.

I upgraded to Firefox 4.0.1, and it now constantly freezes, won't respond at all, and has to be force quit and restarted. Within less than 5 minutes of use, over and over and over... I'm assuming it is a bug in the Mac version.... Am switching to Safari as I can't waste this much time constantly quitting and restarting and getting my tabs all back up. Any suggestions on ways to let Firefox know about the bug would be greatly appreciated. It worked fine until I upgraded :( Am running Mac OS X 10.6.7

Is Force-Quit Bad for Performance?
I had a very slow OS. So, I wiped my hard drive and reinstalled completely. But, back in the days, I used to force quit any app which wouldn't quit quickly.
During a force-quit, would the memory get released?
Or would it create memory leaks which could possibly lead to a slowdown in the long run?Force quitting an application can cause it to bypass its normal exiting procedures and can lead to problems especially loss of data if the app was unable to complete any data saving operations.
Force quitting an app should be reserved to those times the application is truly hung up and hasn't exited in a reasonable amount of time, not used to try and correct a (possible) memory problem. -
Force quitting InDesign as a Matter of Routine. Bad Practice?
I am trying to convince InDesign users here (CS4, CS5) that using Force Quit as a matter of routine for quitting out of InDesign at the end of the day is a bad practice. I think this started because when we were using K4 (enterprise InCopy/InDesign plug-ins), InDesign DID take a long time to quit because of communication to the K4 database and disconnecting.
I need some good evidence to convince everyone to quit out of InDesign normally. And also other programs they use. My argument is that when InDesign quits, it updates its preferences and perhaps may even clean something up. Anyone know?I work on local files only, and I still have to either leave my desk for 10 minutes after I try to quit then shut down, or force quit and shut down. I do work on some large files though (50-100 meg catalogs) with lots of photos linked in. I guess it takes forever to clear all the cached memory or something. If I try to do a shutdown with InDesign open. I always get a time out error. Also when I go back to InDesign after working in Photoshop, FreeHand, Entourage or FireFox it takes a long time to redraw the InDesign screen and menus.
I also have a couple of indexing scripts, but don't run them often. Don't see how that would affect anything.
I read a post somewhere that you could change the "Live Screen Redraw" setting to help with the slowness, but I cannot find that setting in CS3. It may only be in later versions.
Thanks,
BJ

Force quiting apps on iphone bad for logic board???
While visit the apple store this weekend in regards to our phone not working they asked if we double tap the home and slide up on our apps to close them, of force quit the application. We responded yes and were told never to do this. However on previous visits we were told to do this because multiple apps will drain the battery and slow the phone down. I would love to know what the correct answer to this is and understand why we would be told two different things.
Closing apps does not harm anything.
Whoever told you that is mentally challenged. -
Acrobat Pro Freezes completely so I need to Force Quit
I hope I am posting in the right place. Please let me know if I should move this. I am so desperate-- I have tried everything I can think of and I hope someone has another idea I can try.
I am using Acrobat Pro. When the problem started I was using Pro X. I tried upgrading to the trial Acrobat XI to see if that fixed the problem, but it didn't. I don't care which I use as long as it works.
The program starts up, but I can't click on any of the choices on the "splash screen" (where you can choose Open a Recent File or Select a Task). When I roll over the choices I see the rollover highlight, but nothing happens when I click. I can open a file from the FILE menu, but when I do I can't do anything with it. None of the tools on the window tool bar work. Then the whole thing freezes and I have to Force Quit to close the program.
I am on a Mac running Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.5 with a 3.2 GHz Intel Cose i3 processor and 12 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory. When the problem started I was using Lion 10.7.5, so I tried upgrading to Mountain Lion, but it didn't fix the problem.
Here is what I have tried:
> Uninstalling and reinstalling Acrobat Pro X numerous times
> Installing, uninstalling, reinstalling Acrobat Pro XI
> Installing in Safe Mode
> Uninstalling every other Adobe product I had (After Effects Trial, inDesign 5, Adobe Reader)
I also tried various things I found in the Forums-- so many that I can't remember now. One had to do with moving certain preference files and opening the program again, one was the fix for a CS6 conflict problem.
When the problem first started I discovered that my Time Machine backup was not working because my backup disc was full and Time Machine wasn't deleting the old backups. I didn't have a recent backup so I didn't want to do a system restore to before the problem. I got a new 4TB external drive for Time Machine, and got a 3TB external drive to clear a bunch of large documents off my main hard drive.
I am willing to try anything. Please help!!!
KatieWell, after two weeks of pulling my hair out I finally figured it out last night! The problem was a bad mouse driver. I use an Evoluent mouse (which I LOVE) but it is an older model and I suppose the update from OX 10.7.4 to 10.7.5 just kicked the driver into incompatiblity. I had tested the mouse a week or so ago and my Mac wireless mouse worked but didn't solve the problem because when I did the test I didn't actually unplug the Evoluent mouse. Once I did that last night, and used only the Mac wireless mouse, Acrobat went back to working properly.
I just ordered the newest Evoluent mouse which is compatible with OS X. I can't wait for it to arrive tomorrow!!
Thank you to everyone who viewed this question and tried to think of a solution.

IPhoto doesn't update to modified pics after force quit
iPhoto didn't respond to my 'quit' command, so I chose to +force quit+ it. Before I did so, iPhoto had a problem connecting to Facebook, which seemed to cause iPhoto not being able to quit (this happened to me several times recently, and I always had to end up force quitting iPhoto). Every time I clicked on an album under FACEBOOK on the left column of the iPhoto application window, an error message came up saying +"Facebook authentication with server failed. Please check your login and password information."+ I thought perhaps stopping iPhoto from syncing with Facebook would help, so I +removed my Facebook account from iPhoto+, in an attempt to set up the connection again where I would re-enter my login and password information.
However, after this, when I clicked on a photo and then clicked the Facebook botton on the bottom right corner, then clicked *Set Up* in the message box to +set up iPhoto to publish to Facebook+, the Facebook login box never completed loading (it was all white and plank besides the loading bar on the bottom which never exceeded loading more than about 12%). I waited for more than half an hour and the loading didn't process any longer, so I closed the box. I tried this for several times in the next few hours and the same loading problem came up each time.
In the mean while, the Faces under LIBRARY in iPhoto had an +updating circle+ next to it which seemed never able to end the search. So I did some search over the Internet to find solutions to the problem, and came across with this: _http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2444899_.
The problems now were that 1) iPhoto could not load me to the Facebook login page for me to re-enter my Facebook information for iPhoto; and 2) iPhoto could not quit.
Because the solution posed on the above link has a first step of "quit iPhoto", so I force quitted iPhoto and followed the 1) to 6) processes stated in that thread (i.e.: removed ~/Library/Caches/, ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.LSSharedFileList.plist, and ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist to trash; deleted iphoto.apple.com inside Keychain Access; restarted computer; and launched iPhoto again).
This time I could come to the Facebook login page on iPhoto, and quit iPhoto for no problem. However, I now find that some of the pictures I edited within iPhoto before force quitting do not show the modified versions when I open them, even though the +modified versions+ are shown in thumbnails and they can be located in +iPhoto library+ (~/iPhoto Library/Modified/year*/album name/picture name*). The other weird thing is - the problem does not occur to all photos I edited before force quitting (e.g. for two photos I edited one after another, one has the problem and the other does not).
I did some search over the Internet before posting this message, and found one to be a possible solution to my problem: _http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2771968&tstart=15_
Nevertheless, I'm a bit resistent to downloading +iPhoto Library Manager+ in thinking of the down sides of doing so, if there are any. What would be the best way to solve my current problem? How could I get iPhoto to recognize and link to the modified photos instead of the original files? By the way, I did not have this problem before force quitting iPhoto.
Thank you in advance for all your inputs!i'd like to keep all modified files because it took me quite some work to edit the pictures
Then recover them from the damaged Library and import them to the new one. That said, remember they will be treated as "new" photos, not as edited versions of the others. There is no way to recreate that link.
1) Would it be bad for me to keep working with my old iPhoto library?
This library is corrupted. It is known to be damaged. The chances of dataloss are greatly increased. You will have more problems. Personally, I wouldn't.
2) How to *back up*? And I assume it should be conducted regularly?
*Most Simple Back Up:*
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
*Slightly more complex:*
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate
*I'm Serious about Back Ups.* +And you should be too.+
My Library lives on my iMac. It’s Backed up to two external hard disks every day. These disks are permanently attached to the iMac. These back ups run automatically. One is done by Time Machine, one is a bootable back up done by SuperDuper
It’s also backed up to a portable hard disk when ever new photos are added. This hard disk lives in my car. For security, this disk is password protected.
I have a second off-site back up at a relative’s house across town. That’s updated every 3 or 4 months.
My Photos are backed up online. There are many options: Flickr, Picasa, SmugMug etc. However, check the terms of your account carefully. While most sites have free uploading, you will often find that these uploads are limited in terms of the file size or the bandwidth you can use per month. For access that allows you to upload full size pics with no restrictions you may need to pay.
Every couple of months I test the back ups to make sure they are working correctly. It’s very easy to mis-configure a back up application, and the only way to protect against that is to do a trial restore.
3) Should I un-do the removal of ~/Library/Caches/, ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.LSSharedFileList.plist, and ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist, as well as the delete of iphoto.apple.com inside Keychain Access?
No.
Regards

Macbook Pro Running Slow, Constant Force Quit and Hard Restart
Unlike other folks in this forum, my Macbook Pro has been on the downturn for the last several months, as opposed to suddenly having issues when I downloaded Mavericks or some other program. I try to shut it down regularly so it's not constantly running, close out programs as I finish with them, etc, but it still seems to be very bogged down. I did Etrecheck with some more details on the issues below:
Problem description:
Macbook Pro running slowly with a myriad issues, including:
-I often have to force quit applications to close them because when I try to close them regularly, I get the rainbow wheel.
-When my Mac goes to sleep, it sometimes will not respond when I try to wake it back up and I will have to hard restart to get it to do anything. When it DOES respond to me moving the mouse, it will take a minute or two to boot up, during which time I get the rainbow wheel, or it will be stuck on the sign in page but won’t allow me to click in the password box or type my password.
-I get a pop up asking me to install Java Runtime Environment every few hours, but when I try to download it, the website says it’s not compatible for Mac- yet I still get the notification on my computer all the time!
-When I am connected to Apple TV and my computer goes to sleep, the screen on my laptop won’t return to normal size, even though it is no longer displaying to the Apple TV.
-And those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head…

Installed Itunes 8.1 and now it crashes at close and must be force quit.
I just installed Itunes 8.1 on my Mac. I did not realize any issues at first. I can still change cover art, make new playlists but when clicking on the info button (for previously purchased content and in the Itunes Store) the info page opens so big I cannot see the bottom or the top and I cannot close the info page. The only way to get rid of the info page is to close Itunes which crashes and must be force quit.
This is very disappointing. I will not use the info button until a fix is made to this release. I have already seen the posts that you cannot re-install the lower versions.. This was very badly done.Because I really needed to view the info on new items available in the iTunes Store I experimented with my display settings.
By lowering the display settings to 1280x800
(still could not see bottom of box at that time)
and then raising it back up to 1440x900
I was finally able to see the bottom of the resized box
and now when the box is opened it maintains the new size.
Hopefully next upgrade the box will default to the lowest and not the largest box size on windows and you can resize from there.. -
I had Cs2 and Office for Mac 2004 installed on an OS 10.6.3 system. Worked fine. This weekend my computer did an auto update to OS 10.6.8 and now I cannot save or print from any office or CS2 Apps. What happened. Office also freezes and I have to force quit. Any advise. System or Software problem?
Bad timing. Reapply the security update:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1489
What happened is that version 1.0 of the security update was available for a bit of time this weekend, and that disabled Rosetta. Version 1.1 brought it back. -
Need help...Force Quit doesn't work & keep crashing HD b/c of it
For a week now, I have been trying to re-download my iTunes library from the iTunes store. Turns out, the problem has to do with the amount of downloads they put in my queue, which causes iTunes to crash. But, when it does crash, Force Quit doesn't work UNTIL I am forced to unplug the hard drive it was writing to. This is BAD and could kill my hard drive (I've had to do this AT LEAST 20 times this week and have repaired it 4 times with DiskWarrior and TechTool Pro during the past week).
Is there ANY way to get force quit to work without having to do this to the hard drive?? Seagate is no help as their phone just rings...no customer support avail even though hours say they are open. I am using 10.4.10 and a 500GB Seagate Pro External Hard Drive. I would put this in iTunes, but Force Quit is a Tiger thing. Off topic a bit, do you think iTunes would crash less if I downloaded to my internal HD instead (though, not really feasible as my internal couldn't fit all the downloads anyway)???
Thanks in advance for any suggestions! The previous reply was correct -- the freeze you are experiencing has nothing to do with the number of songs in the iTunes queue. The problem is with your hard drive. The newer Seagate FreeAgent drives (and all FreeAgent Pros) use a chipset that does not play well with recent versions of MacOS. I am not sure if Seagate uses two individual chipsets: one for USB and one for eSATA (assuming you are using a FreeAgent Pro), or simple one that supports both protocols, but that is the causing your mysterious freeze.
I have spent weeks troubleshooting this very same problem and have yet to find a solution. Right now, I am in standby mode until Apple releases 10.4.11 which is said to have fixed "issues with USB devices." I have tried many brands of external drives (Western Digital, Hitachi, roll-your-own, pre-FreeAgent Seagates) and they all work fine. I have even removed the drives from the FreeAgent Pro drives and put them into roll-your-own USB enclosures and they work fine. The problem is with the Seagate FreeAgent interface chip itself.
Hopefully you can still return your new FreeAgent drive to the store you bought it from. I am a strong believer in Seagate drives and use them extensively at home and work (over a dozen externals total) and the FreeAgents have caused more trouble than I've ever experienced with an external device. As of now, I am using a Western Digital 750GB MyBook drive until Seagate or Apple can find a permanent fix for the issue.
That being said, the FreeAgents have worked fine in the past and only recently have begun to have issues, so if you can, try rolling back to an earlier version of 10.4 and try again. Being a software developer, that option wasn't available to me. -
Force quit, doesn't.
I've been having this problem for awhile - almost since I got my Mac back in August. Basically, if a program hangs up and I have to try to use Force Quit, nothing happens. I can give the Force Quit command multiple times, and nothing ever happens. Also, sometimes this causes other programs to hang up, too. Trying to shut down the machine doesn't work either, because then the shutdown hangs as well - usually the dock, desktop icons, and menubar will disappear, and the FileVault box will show up (maybe), but then it freezes and I have to hold down the power button to turn it off manually.
This problem predates not only the 10.5.7 update, but even the 10.5.6 update. Like I said, it's been happening almost since I got the computer in August. It doesn't happen every time I try to Force Quit something, but it happens a lot.You might take a look at some of threads and see if you get any ideas for things that could be your problem. I've had it happen a couple of times, just not very often. If you are seeing it quite often there might be an underlying cause that can be fixed. As I mentioned, some people DO get it to stop. It's just that each solution appears to be for some different thing--for instance, I've seen bad RAM, font mess ups, all sorts of things, which when fixed ended the annoyance for that person.

IPhoto '09 won't shut down unless I force quit
I am trying to thin out my library and am manually copying them to an external drive. When I then move event to the trash and empty trash, iPhoto locks up and will not close. After I force quit, all the events are back in the library, but grayed out. Please HELP. What am I doing wrong, or is there a way to quickly back up the entire library to an external drive?
I followed your advice and dragged the library onto the back up drive, and it copied it all over, but is it just running it from that location now?
Nope. You need to choose it first. Now that the Library has been copied you need to tell iPhoto to look at it.
To tell iPhoto which library to read:
_Quit iPhoto if its open
_Hold down option on the keyboard
_Keep holding option and launch iPhoto
_You will get a window that asks you to choose a library
_Go down the list of libraries and locate the one that is on the external drive (as you click on each library you will see it's location listed at the bottom of the window)
It didn't clear up any space, and when I opened iPhoto from the desktop to delete the events it seems to also delete from the backed up version.
Once you have followed the above steps to switch iPhoto to your library copy on the external drive you can then go to Home > Pictures > iPhoto Library and dump that Library in the trash.
_Launch iPhoto again to make sure you have your pictures. If you do, then you can empty your trash which will free up the disk space.
<hr>
Back to your backup question.
By moving your iPhoto Library to an external drive, and then deleting the Library from the computer, you now have your iPhoto Library in one and only one location, the external drive.
So what happens if that external drive crashes? poof all pictures gone.
To avoid that from happening you want to have a backup. What is a backup? A backup is a copy of your information. By having your information in two different locations, if one location stops working (failed drive, lightening, cats) you have a second location where the data is stored.
For VERY important information that you never want to lose, you should consider having even more backups like on DVD or even another hard drive that you disconnect from the computer and store somewhere safe (like inside a fire-proof safe). You would update that additional backup every now and then.
Here is how I have my computer setup.
_Macintosh HD -- This is my computer. It has all my files minus iTunes, iPhoto, and Movies.
_Media Drive -- This is my 1st external hard drive. It contains all my iTunes, iPhoto, and Movies. (I did this because my Macintosh HD was getting so full because of all the iTunes, iPhoto, and Movies content.)
_Time Machine Backup Drive -- This is my 2nd external hard drive. The Time Machine program performs automatic backups of both the Macintosh HD and the Media Drive to this drive.
If I have an issue with either the Macintosh HD (the computer) or the Media drive (the location of my pictures, movies, and music) I have a backup in that Time Machine Backup Drive that I can get my files from.
You could setup your system in the same way.
I have a "my passport" drive, but I've been warned that they are a bit sketchy.
I don't own a passport myself though I've seen them. Have you actually had an issue with it or is this someone else's reports of issues? If you have had issues with your drive you should contact the drive's manufacturer to get those resolved (assuming it's in warranty still).
If you have doubts or have had recurrent issues with one of your external drives, you might want to consider replacing it with something you do trust. Why keep a drive you think is bad? Hard drives are really quite inexpensive these days. You can get big drives for relatively little. Examples from Apple's website (but you can buy drives at pretty much any store that sells electronics).
If your shopping for a backup drive go for the largest one you can afford (you can always use more space because you will eventually fill it up). Also going for a faster connection like Firewire is a good thing to look for, though certainly not required.
Cheers -
Is it only me or do anyone's C655 force quit when shutting down?
I bought my Toshiba C655-S5049 model from best buy about two months ago and everything is great about the laptop, it's just that everytime when I shut down the laptop, it always force quit before shutting down. I want to know why it's doing that and if it's only me that's having this problem.

I've recently upgraded to FIOS, and so far it's been a bad experience on almost all fronts....kind of wishing I'd stuck with DSL...one of the main problems being the DSL support was so much more helpful...FIOS tech support can't seem to help with anything..
My main issue I'm having is connectivity on my laptop is inconsistent. Sometimes it's fast, sometimes it's about as slow as dial-up. I know the laptop's wireless connection is outside the scope of Verizon's support, but when I had DSL I had similar issues, and support was able to recommend changing some settings on my modem that resolved the issues. Now FIOS support, which seems to be US-based compared to DLS's India-based support, has no idea what to do...
Seems your main issue is resolved, glad to hear it!
As for US-based tech support... I can tell you that the turnover rate for phone positions in most US call centers is crazy. It's a stressful job, it generally doesn't pay very well, and chances for promotion are few and far between. People get burned out or find a better job, and the center has to train someone new to replace them. When I worked in a call center years ago, they had to double up and stagger the training classes for new hires to keep up with the attrition rates.
I don't know what it's like in call centers outside the US, but I would certainly hope they have more people keeping the job for longer, allowing them to gain knowledge through experience.

when i start downloading a CD purchase it downloads approx 3 to 4 songs then just stops says downloading waited a hour still downloading had to force quit iTunes then reopen to complete download keeps doing this every time i purchase a cd any ideas ?
I too am facing this problem, however a little differently. I am in the process of uploading my vinyl collection to digital format in Audacity and am having this problem with multiple tracks when played in iTunes. The first few albums I ripped play just fine in iTunes, but the last few skip over about the last minute of every song and go to the next song. As you said, if you drag the time marker past the skipping point though, the rest of the song will play to the end just fine. I then synced these songs onto my iPod and they play perfectly straight through. I was leaning toward a bad mp3 encoding process that was maybe creating a glitch but I'm not sure at this point if they play correctly on my iPod. In quicktime the song will just stop playing at that specfic point, but if you hit play again, it will continue to the end. I can say though, I haven't seen this problem with any iTunes download, or ripped CD that I have ever put into iTunes (which makes my situation a tad different than yours), it's been purely the songs that I have imported via Audacity from LP's.
