Is Front Row part of the 'Bundled Software'?

With the Leopard update disk I got when purchasing my Mac Mini in February, is there an option to reinstall just the bundled software, without being forced to reinstall the entire OS?. Is Front Row part of that bundled software package?

bundled software means ilife ( iphoto, imovie, garage band, iweb and idvd). Is this what you are talking about? ilife is not part of leopard so it wouldn't be on the leopard upgrade DVD. if you want to reinstall it you need either a separate ilife DVd if you bought it or the original Tiger install disks that came with the computer. Insert the tiger disk, open it in finder and double-click on 'install bundled software only". this will reinstall ilife.

no. Front Row is part of the OS itself. you can reinstall Front Row fromthe leopard install DVD using [Pacifist|http://www.charlessoft.com>.

    Hi
I usually only install the driver when I get a creative card, as the bundled software tends to take over. I use the cards just for Cubase ASIO drivers. I'm just wondering am I missing out on anything. Is any of the software bundled with the card really worth installing? Or am I better off just leaving it on the CD

  • I sure hope the next Front Row update includes the Apple TV 2 functionality

I bought a Mac mini the day Leopard was released, and now it is my media server. It was that or an Apple TV, and I liked having more control plus a DVD player in the box.
Front Row 2.0 is nice, but I've been trying to find add-ons, like Sapphire, to give it more features. Nothing yet will play YouTube or other internet video, which is one of the things I'd really like. So, after today's cool demo of ATV 2.0 software, I'm hoping that Steve & Co will keep Front Row on parity with ATV.

AppleTV includes HDMI and HDCP, which are not present in Apple computers. Although computers play HD movie trailers just fine, I suspect that studio demands for DRM would ensure that rental HD downloads (or HD-DVD or Blu-ray) would not appear on a computer. Unless the computer had HDMI and HDCP enforced.

  • Front row, where's the app and login problem....

    Hi all !
When a use front row via the apple remote, each time my Imac core duo goes to sleep, and i try to change playlist in itunes it ask me for my login/password... So i have to get up and enter the password, annoying since i'm in the bed trying to sleep on sleeping music :-))
BTY where's Front row don't find it in the app folder ?

BTY where's Front row don't find it in the app folder ?
Front Row in Mac OS X 10.4.x is not an "application" so it doesn't live in the /Applications/ folder. It is part of the /System/ folder.
each time my Imac core duo goes to sleep, and i try to change playlist in itunes it ask me for my login/password...
Under the Security System Preferences, do you have the box checked "on" by the option that says, "Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver"? That must be the option that's causing the trouble. There's nothing built-in to Front Row to require a password...

  • Can Front Row continue playing the next video? (continuous playing)

    Hey everybody,
I tried searching the forum, but no hits, so I thought: let's post something
I got lots of small (get-a-mac) video's in my Movies folder, and I want to play them on my TV through Front Row. But after every video I have to select the next one and press play...
That can't be the way to go...?!
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Dirkuijt, Netherlands

This question has come up before. Unfortunately, there's no way to make a "playlist" of videos as you might in iTunes for music. The videos are played with the QuickTime Player application, not iTunes. The QuickTime Player application has no ability to read/play a list of videos.
If you choose an iTunes playlist that includes movies, you'll only hear the sound and you won't see any video.
Since Apple considers Front Row a part of Mac OS X, I'd send Apple some Mac OS X feedback and let them know you'd like to see this option:

  • Is there any way I can browse photos on Front Row and choose the music?

    Hi!
Without creating a slideshow or anything in advance, is there any way using Front Row that I can browse my photos and either keep my iTunes music playing in the background or the music I choose in Front Row?
    Thanks

I am going to assume you are on Leopard, if so, as far as I understand it, under FR 2.0, this is not possible. This is the sole reason I have yet to upgrade to Leopard, hope you listening Apple!!! I only have one mac, a mini, that I use as a HTPC. Why this functionality was removed is like a Windows type decision, pointless and ridiculous.
I have a seen a lot of talk about being able to install the old version of FR, search the forums, for how to do that.
Under Tiger, it is totally do-able, as long as you ensure your default picture slideshow setting does not have pre-saved music.

  • Front Row Trailers Always the Same

Ok, I'v been using Front Row for more than a month now, but all the movie trailers remain the same, despite frequent updates on the Apple's website. There are already new movies but Front Row still feeds me with trailers of movies months old. (I tried to find other posts about this issue, but most seem to focus on non-responding servers)
How do I make Front Row update the list of trailers? Please.

I think that it's a different server that runs the Front Row trailers. Up until recently, a ot of people would do good to get any trailers at all. They still do update, just less frequently than the Quicktime site.
They are also all in HD I believe, so that might factor into the limited number of them.

  • Front Row freezing in the movies menu

Hi, I got my new Macbook last week, last weekend I ran all the updates, including FR, and everything seemed to work fine. Last night trying was the first time I went into the "Shared" video folder in the FR menu, and after that while trying to exit FR froze up. It keeps doing the same thing, and it only happens in the Movies menu. Sometimes I'm able to exit after 20-30 seconds, sometimes I have to shut down the computer.
Is there any way to reset/reinstall FR just to get rid of the problem? Thanks!
I'm an ex-windows user, new to Mac, still trying to get used to it

i have the same problem on my new notebook (a mac book pro intel). I observed that it freezes everytime i'm not connected to the Web and i haven't turned off airport...
is it possible front row tries to download some information by internet, it doesn't recognize connection is not active and given that mac is not connected the research freeze the application ('till a timeout message is sent back..after looong time...)?
everytime the solution for me it was to wait long time (really long) or to turn off computer...

  • Front row connects to the wrong itune store

when connecting to itunes through front row it connects to the wronng store and not the uk store .any idea,s

Delete your Front Row preferences. You can find the file in this path:
    <Macintosh HD>/Users/<YouUsersShortName>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.frontrow.plist
Just drag the .plist file to the Trash, log out and log back in. (You might want to log out, log in drag the file to the Trash, log out and log back in just to make absolutely certain the Front Row process is not currently running in the background when you delete the file.) The iTunes store you've selected is almost the only thing saved in that file.

  • Is Front Row the unloved child of iTunes?

I get the feeling that Front Row is the unloved child of iTunes. iTunes progresses, but there has been little change to Front Row.
MANY months ago, cover art stopped displaying from a shared library. Now we are witnessing many cases of videos not playing properly (e.g. Video but no sound, Sound but no video).
And my latest issue is that items in my iTunes library aren't even appearing in the Front Row app (which I will post next).
Please Apple / iTunes -- give Front Row the love it deserves!!

  • FRONT ROW PROBLEMS

My FR is missing. I have checked CoreServices folder in the System folder and there is nothing that appears to ressemble FR. My IR is working and Apple-Escape key-combo does not invoke FR. IR appears listed as USB in the System profiler. What else can I do to recover FR?

In any case to put it back in you will need to perform and Archive and Install...
No, you can install Front Row only with the "Bundled Software" installer without going through the whole Mac OS X install. Just insert your Mac OS X Install Disk 1 and double-click on the "Install Bundled Software Only". You can customize the installation at the "Installation Type" window by clicking on the "Customize" button. You can uncheck every other option besides Front Row and continue.
Of course, it's always a good idea to have a backup, but this should be a much simpler method of getting Front Row back. You will want to run the Software Update afterwards to make sure your "old" version of Front Row is up-to-date with the rest of your software.

  • Front Row vs third party apps (i.e. Boxee, etc.)

My next project is to create a home theater computer (HTMAC) and a separate networked media server. I'd like to use a mac mini as the HTMAC, especially if they start putting blu-ray players in them. I would also attach an external PVR to record TV. My goal is to rip all my DVDs, move all my music/photos, and record TV to the media server. Then I would be able to watch all my movies, recorded TV, Live TV, or browse music/photos from the HTMAC. But the catch is I want to have all that functionality from a single app like Front Row, so that to the user it wouldn't even look like a computer, just a very robust DVR. The next step would then be to get apple TV (or similar device) for my other TVs so that I could view any media from my media server.
I've looked into Windows and Linux/Unix based solutions, but I want the networking ease that Mac brings.
Playing with Frontrow on my MacBook Pro (with no PVR attached) it seems that networked media is not easily accessible. I've read some of the tricks about creating shortcuts to the networked folder on your computer. Is there a way to no kidding change the source folder? I also want to record the TV programs to their own folder, not my iTunes library. Is there a way to get the "TV" menu to point to a folder and not the iTunes library. Also if I connect a PVR will Front Row give me the option to watch live TV, or would I have to quit Front Row and open the PVRs software?
Does anyone have experience with Boxee, Plex, or some other software? Any thoughts on if those apps will give me what I want? Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Go Plex. Front Row is dead. Hasn't been updated since they ruined it with Leopard.

  • Front row is gone, how do I reinstall from the CD?

I lost Front Row a long time ago, so long ago that I don't remember why anymore. Spotlight does not bring it up. How can I reinstall Front Row again with the CDs?

How to Use Pacifist to Replace Deleted or Missing OS X Components
Insert the OS X Installer DVD into the optical drive. Use a simple utility like TinkerTool to toggle invisibility so you can see invisible items. Alternatively, open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and at the prompt enter the following:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles Yes
    Press RETURN.
To turn off the display of invisible files repeat the above command substituting No for Yes.
The install packages are located in the /System/Installation/ folder on the DVD.
Download the shareware utility Pacifist from VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Use it to extract a fresh copy of the missing item(s) from the file archives on your OS X installation DVD. The file archives are in the /System/Installations/ folder (use Go to Folder option in the Go menu of the Finder.)
Here are Four Basic ways to use Pacifist (courtesy of George Orville.)
    A. Drag a .pkg icon onto the Pacifist window .....proceed to step 7.

    12. In steps 8/10ß.... you also have the choice to “cancel”
    Notes.....
    • Pacifist may find that a file it is installing already exists on the hard disk. Pacifist will present you with an alert panel....
    Stop
    Leave original alone
    Update ..... Default selection
Replace .... Replace option should only be used on full install packages
