Is fxLegalizeNTSC trustworthy to keep color safe for broadcast?

Cutting a promo for broadcast and I just want to make sure that fxLegalizeNTSC at the top of the stack will keep color in safe regions.

ON first establishing a relationship with a b-cast entity, get their specific requirements for codecs/standards/formats & etc and then do a SHORT sample of the kind of footage/subject you'll be shipping them. Send it to their QC types to load onto their system and make sure it meets their specs. Adjust as necessary from there. Some folks around here have complete editing production setups with separate vid cards for b-cast monitors all designed to be calibrated to spec. They pretty much know that what signal they put out WILL match any particular given need. They still always send a test to any new service they deliver to.
For the rest of us, running less-"enhanced" equipment, but still calibrated to consistency, such tests are also needed ...  and again, modify the outputs according to the feedback you get.
It's simply kind of scary to expect to send b-cast ready material to a network/service that you haven't worked with before ... it might fly, but if it doesn't, wow ... not good. I know my screen is calibrated for rec709, and most of what I do goes to dvd's for clients to have a personal items or to the web for short fun promo pieces. Neither is nearly as critical as delivering content for a network b-cast, but I still have tested on various types of tv's for the dvd's, and through various web players for the web-deliverable material. Though those two 'streams' of viewing have rather wide possible individual ... projection, what do we call it these days? ... still, I note the range of visual results and set a seemingly middle-course set of output criteria so the content looks at least decent over most equipment it will be viewed on. I've had a couple guys what deliver all their material for tv stations & networks ... who find their output needs vastly simpler than mine as they can just set their calibration and when it's on, it's on. I have to ... guesstimate ... at times.
But then most of my clients are NOT as critical of optical senses as you'll find in many professional b-cast centers.

  • Colour safe for broadcast help...

    Hi all....
Right, not too sure about this one....
Having taught myself coulor corrections, luminance and Gammas etc.... I am now being carefull at my colour levels throughout my sequences, I am left with an issue.
My sequence is done and I am about to apply a broadcast safe filter throughout the sequence to keep my levels below 100% brightness.
But for broadcast I understand that I also need to keep my RGB values below 100%.
I understand that the way to check that those are below 100% is to check the vectorscope.
But that means going through everyframe of the sequence.
Broadcast safe doesn't seem to affect colour? or am I wrong?
Does it just modify the luminance?
Whats the best way to check the coulor levels?
    Anyone?
    THanks in advance
    Steph

But that means going through everyframe of the sequence
yes it does ... welcome to our world
Broadcast safe doesn't seem to affect colour? or am I wrong?
Does it just modify the luminance?
the Broadcast Safe filter does indeed affect the color ... it is just far more forgiving, at its default setting, than perhaps you were expecting. if you try some of the other settings "ultra super duper conservative" etc you might see more appreciably that it is in fact working.
Whats the best way to check the coulor levels?
Use your scopes as you go through the sequence.
Plus, go to View menu > Range Check... > Excess Chroma - make sure it is checked - then scrub through your edit and see if you get any warning flags come up in the canvas.

You're welcome, and thank you for the reply.
    2) Yesterday I made the subclips with the In-Out Points and Command-U, the benefit is that I've seen the clip before naming it. Now I'm using markers, it's benefit is that I can write comment and (the later) clip name at once, the drawback is that I have to view to the next shot's beginning before knowing what the shot contains.
But now I found out that I can reconnect my clips independently to the format I converted the master clip to. I reconnected the media to the original AVI file and it worked, too! The more I work with, the more I'm sold on it... - although it doesn't seem to be able to read and use the date information within the DV AVI.
    1) Ok, I tried something similar within FCE. Just worked, but the file size still remains. Which codec settings should I use? Is the export to DV in MOV with a quality of 75% acceptable for both file size and quality? Or would be encoding as H.264 with best quality an option for archiving, knowing that I have to convert it back to DV if I (maybe) wan't to use it for editing later? Or anything else?
    Thank's in advance again,
    André

I'd go a little farther than Peter and say, "No, it's not safe."
And I'd go a little farther and say, "No, it's not safe," and ask the question of why they didn't just buy the color they wanted in the first place

  • Setting color codes for more than one photo at a time

Is there any way to set color codes for more than one photo at a time?

    Hi John,
I will look at keywords. My issue is speed. Right now I am culling and editing an event shoot that spanned a week with 35 separate events and more than 5000 images. So I use the fastest most convenient method I can and it still takes a long time to have a completed and final shoot. On this shoot I will end up with a final set of around 1500 images. Right now I am finishing processing a show that will hang in the Deutsches Amerikanish Zentrum in Stuttgart.
As I am sure you are aware by now, having seen enough of my inane questions that over the last two years or since Lightroom version 1.xx if I could not figure out how to do something I skipped it. So many things in Lightroom are buried and unless you have a mind like a steel trap (and think that some of you guys in the forum do) locating how to do something is not obvious.
For example, I only learned (in the last hour) that I could assign colors as a group of selections by using Shift + number. I found this in a side head in Martin Evenings Lightroom book. I still do not know how to find a way to display the color filter "selection" set in Library mode. Is there a way?
To top it off, Stuttgart Media University asked me if I would add a Lightroom module to my schedule this year. Now I have a compelling reason to learn all those missing pieces that I have created workarounds for. Hence the number of posts you have been seeing from me over the past few of weeks.
I tell my class that there are no such things as stupid questions, only questions. Now I am practicing what I have been preaching for the last gazillion years. Guys like you have been great.
    My workflow is
    1. I first separate all images by event. I do that at the time of import.
    2. I do a fast pass rejecting all the obviously bad images
    3. I do a second pass grouping the images by sub-group (speeches, people talking, performances, etc.) This is where I run out of selection methods and your key-wording could work but it would probably take too much time to establish a keyword set for a single event. Where I have more than five subgroups I set up different collection sets with one collection for each sub group. However I would like to keep a single event in one collection.
    4. I then select the images to be used by color code.
    5. Next I process the final images (crop develop etc) by collection.
    6. Last I output the set according to client requirement.
If you have a better workflow, I am all ears.
By the way, what is your photo specialty and where are you located?

  • Color management for flash player with hardware acceleration

I have tested the color management for flash player 10.2 with and without hardware acceleration (GPU) on different PCs with different video cards.
Videos that are played via flash without hardware acceleration on PC have proper color as designed in After Effects.
When I switch on hardware acceleration, the color shifts, for example green becomes lighter, although grey values are OK. I have tried this by writing a  small Flash programme for playing a movie; I wrote two programmes one with color management as described in the article "Color correction in Flash Player" http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flash/quickstart/color_correction_as3.html and another one without color management. In both cases I got the same color shift when hardware acceleration was turned on. From the result I concluded that color management does not work when hardware acceleration is on.
My question is: are there any plans to have color management for flash player with hardware acceleration (GPU) in the near future?
We need to play complex high definition movies streaming through a high speed local area network that need hardware acceleration to avoid stuttering.

Hi, LOL at my screen moniker. That's interesting that the FF beta has an Option for that. The only problem, is that I have heard that each browser must UNcheck the H.A. I'm sure you'll find out.
Hope that works at least for FF. Let me know if you have time.
I've been checking out Apple TV and Google TV. Just saved the links and some info, haven't had time to go further. I'd prefer Apple TV over Google tho.
I have a 55" HD Sony/Blu-ray Surround Sound Speakers, etc. I hooked up the VGA cable for Internet, and WOW on the Screen/Monitor!! Now I'm thinking about the iPhone 4 with VZ too, on their pre-order list for 2/3/11!
Hard to keep up with the Technology, moving faster today for some reason.
We are under the Snow & Ice warning, getting it now. Hope I don't lose power! If so, I'll be offline for sure.
If I find anything on that H.A. for IE, I'll let you know.
    Thanks,

  • Snow Leopard's Default Gamma & Color Correcting for Pre Press in Photoshop CS4

After searching the forums I thought I would start my own thread on this subject.
I have Photoshop CS4 and InDesign CS4 and I have continued to color correct, for pre press, in OS 10.4.11 Tiger with the 1.8 Default Gamma and 6500 color tempurature, using Apple's display calibration tools in the OS's System Preferances.
I want to switch to Snow Leaopard but with it's Defualt Gamma of 2.2, I'm not able to make my minitor manually adjust to the needed range for brightness and contrast that is needed to begin the calibration process.  Is there a way to color correct photos, for pre pre press, in Photoshop with a 2.2 Gamma setting in my display preferances?

I have had success just with Apple's System Preferences for color calibration.  I do design and pre press for a number of customers of the various printers I work with.  Most of the photos I work with are from digital cameras and are provided by the customer.  The only point in the whole process, where the photos get adjusted to have eye pleasing color, when coming off the printing press, is when I work with them.
The printers I work with continue to send their customers to me, for design and pre press, because they like my color work on the photos.  I send the pre press files as Press Optimized PDFs to the printer's FTP server and the printer does all the direct to plate separations in-house.  I want to continue to be reliable in that area and so the brighter default Gamma built into Snow Leopard seems to complicate things if I ever want to move up from Tiger to Snow Leopard.
I have two 17" Apple CRT displays that cannot adjust into calibration range when I'm booted in Snow Leopard. These CRT displays can only manually adjust in range for calibration under Tiger or Leopard. It sounds like if I purchase an IPS based LCD monitor, made by Apple, Dell, or other brands, I will probably be able to manually adjust the display for Gamma 1.8, under Snow Leopard.
I was posing this question about using Gamma 2.2 because if I could color correct for pre press with the 2.2 setting, I could continue to use my old Apple 17" CRT displays and also any web content I create will preview closer in color, on PCs as they will on my Mac.  Maybe my review PDFs will view with similar color on my customers PCs if I work with a 2.2 Gamma setting and instead of 1.8.  For now I know I will keep my printers happy if I continue to work with a monitor that has a 1.8 Gamma setting and a 6500 color temperature setting.  If that must continue to be the standard for pre press, then I will need to get an IPS based LCD monitor that will allow me to adjust in the 1.8 Gamma range while booted in Snow Leopard.

  • Is there a way to switch back to the old color scheme for the keypad? The new black-on-white color scheme is more difficult to see and use for the visually impaired.

Is there a way to switch back to the old color scheme for the keypad? After upgrading to ios 6, the keypad switched to a black-on-white color scheme.  I have a severe visual impairment and found the previous white-on-black color scheme much easier to see and use.
The inverted colors option doesn’t make things look all that better.    My dad, who does not have any serious vision problems, has put off upgrading his iphone because of the color scheme changes.

I have exactly the same concern. It seems it would be a simple fix for Apple to allow users to turn off the camera (and even the mic) while keeping FaceTime open -- especially now that it turns out FaceTime must remain open in order to send and receive iPhone calls on a Mac.
I like to think this new functionality of FaceTime will be baked into a future release of Yosemite, as the current setup has that not-quite-finished feel of a work in progress. In the meantime, there's nothing like a little piece of Post-It stuck over the camera to keep the NSA from watching your face as you type a post to the Apple Support Communities.

  • Iphone keeps asking me for apple user password

ok so I have looked at a few threads on the same topic, but I can't as of yet figure out how to fix it.
Basically I was using an app and I purchased something within the app which needed my apple password (all safe, done it plenty of times), so it started out then as only when I had this app open it would ask for my password. Now it's just popping up randomly asking me for it when I am not even using the app.
I tried doing everything suggested that I could find in other threads, nothing in any download queues, no downloads paused, reset my phone, synced it, made sure everything was up to date. I even tried deleting the app in the first place ...
I know that restoring my phone and starting from scratch will probably do it, but it's such a pain in the *** doing so ... so wondering if anyone has experienced something similar and could suggest anything else to try first?

I've got automatic downloads turned off and I tried signing out and in via the settings and still keeps asking me for an apple id.
It doesn't do it continuously, it'll just pop up randomly ... if the phone is just sitting there it may ask for my apple id and regardless of whether I press cancel or enter my password nothing happens .. it may be another 2mins, 5mins, 15mins but eventually it'll just randomly pop up and ask me again. It does accept my password though because I tried entering an incorrect password to see what happens and it gives me the error saying it's incorrect, so when I enter the correct one in the box disappears and it accepts it as I say, but only for so long before it pops up again.

  • Changing color table for intensity graphs

Hi, I've been working on superimposing intensity graphs and I'm almost getting it, I'm just having trouble with color table, it is suppose to be composed of a 1-D array of 256 colors
I have 2 intensity graphs each with a different color table (256 color - 256 locations in the color table array). I need to "squeeze" both color table into a third color table for the superimposing of the 2 intensity graphs. therefore I figure I would take every other color value from each of the first 2 color tables (so each color table shrinks to 128 color) and add the values to form a 3rd color table so that the bottom will correspond to the first color table and the top will correspond to the 2nd color table.
I can do this manually, but it takes WAY too long, so I've been trying to use some kinda of algorism, but I cannot succeed. Anyone have any suggestions? it seems that color table is an unusual kinda of array
    My attempted program is attached.
    thanks very much!!

    Brian,
I think this is what you're after (attached). The easiest thing to do is to decimate, then concatenate your original color tables to form your new "squeezed" color table. However, keep in mind that you also have to squeeze, or remap, your underlying data values to correspond with either one half of the color table or the other.
See if what I did makes sense.
    Regards,
    John

  • Color support for AJA IO?

I know this has been discussed before, and I've read thru a multitude of threads about it...but, was just curious: Has there been any progress on allowing Color to support the video output to AJA IO through Firewire 800? We've got a working system setup here that works great with FCP for what we need, I'd just really like to be able to use the same video output to preview my work in Color. Thanks.

Y'know, Apple does pretty much what it pleases, and if it wants to throw money at COLOR, that would be their prerogative. But that would be a whole other piece of history, to put such a formerly high-value app into a loss-leader... oh, well... and then pour tons more money into base-level functionality rather than more flashy tricks (aka shiny things)? Where is the business case that favours things like reliability and stability -- when most retail buyers just want a bagful of instant effect plugins and keep shelling out for those? "Now less crash-prone!" would not a make great ad blurb -- but its pretty much the only thing that will keep the pros interested, IF Avid can revive its fortunes. Because, guess how many of those pre-built effects I use? Clue: its a REALLY low number.
At the moment, the whole architecture of the software is built around a PCIe GPU/graphics and AJA/Blackmagic Video I/O hierarchy. I don't know all the north-bridge and south-port Intel processor gack, but my bet is that it would take a start-from-scratch approach to change this. Just the way that FCP and COLOR have wildly divergent strategies for display wrt effects (RTE, anyone-- how would that work in COLOR?)
Firewire for COLOR? There could always be a surprise, but don't expect any miracles. The next priority appears to be integrating REDflow. That would appear to be in the opposite direction from FireWire.

    :) listen dude
Every display (TV, LCD, TFT, notebooks display, external display, etc.) might affect your eyes if you would not follow the rules recommended by manufacturers and eye specialist ;)
You should take a break between the computer work sessions and gaming.
You should keep distance to the monitor and be sure that your environment is bright enough
Read the user manual and ask your eye specialist how to avoid red eyes ;)

"If you've forgotten the Apple ID password how did you log in to make the last post?"
Exactly! The password I used to log on here and write my post I figured was the same Apple ID password I would use to reset my computer login password. But my computer isn't recognizing it as the correct password so it wont let me update my login password. I have 2 user accounts on my computer.
As far as the link you provided, I already looked to that for help earlier. It states:
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Users & Groups, click the lock to unlock it, then provide an administrator name and password. Select a user, then click Reset Password.
I did these steps, but I don't remember my admin password. The question is: How do I reset my admin password so I can reset my log in password.
Is my admin password the same password I use to log onto this website to post questions? If so, like I said previously, I already reset that password and my computer isnt recognizing it.
