Is Garage Band right for me?

Hi - I'm completely a novice at recording. I'm a singer/songwriter and am looking into getting a recording program. I've heard people say that Garage Band is really user friendly to the novice. Would it be a good program for me to start on? My goals are to be able to take my recordings and release them as albums and hopefully not have to go into a studio anymore. I won't be recording anything except for my vocal tracks and guitar. I plan on trying to use the virtual instruments provided for everything else.
Also if you have suggestions on what type of equipment (mics, speakers, plug ins) I'll be needing/wanting to go with a new Mac to reach my goal please let me know. Thanks
Pete

GB is perfect for what you want to do.
equipment depends a lot on what your budget is, but you can find interfaces here:

with links on the left for mics and other things.

  • Editing audio and samples- garage band fit for the job?

    hey folks,
I'm rather new to Garage band but know other applications quite well (i'm an Acid & soundforge convert).
A few questions to help get me up to speed.
Garage band is great for loops and recording but what about editing samples and existing files?
For example, I have hours of recorded sounds from the streets, etc that I'd like to chop up into loops. Im having trouble zeroing in with garage band on start and endpoints for cropping...
Is Garage band an 'all in one' or are you expected to use an external editing software to do this? IF so, what software are most people using for this?
next question. any easy way to reverse a file in Garage band??? how about use your mouse cursor to define the start point in playback (Kind of important when you're zeroing in while editin).
Sorry for the loaded questions = these are my roadblocks right now...

what about editing samples and existing files?
An audio editor is a better chocie for, well, editing audio:

  • How do you record video with usb mic and have the audio from garageband be the sound when recording and not just your normal voice but garage band effects for youtube?

How do you record video with usb mic and have the audio form garageband be apart of the video when recording, meaning the audio from garageband and echo  and not just your normal voice for youtube post?its not add the garageband audio its just normal voice from mic no  effects is going thru?

    Hi Life93,
What you describe would be possible by recording your video, then removing the audio from it and adding audio from GarageBand once the video is in iMovie (I presume here that you are using iMovie for your video production. Other applications may need different methods.)

  • Where do I find the "Puzzle Piece" icon in garage band for Ipad 2?

I Recently downloaded the "Garage Band" app for my Ipad 2. I began a new song, with two sections - section A and section b. Every time I try and play the song, it only plays one section, depending on which one I scrole to.
I Looked up this problem on the internet and saw that someone had a similar problem. I eventually found instruction to click on the "Puzzle Piece" icon in Garage Band and that there would be instruction to do so from that icon. Problem is, I cannot find the icon in this app, any where.
Can anyone describe where I can find this "Puzzle Piece" icon, either with words or a screen shot Of the app?  Thanks!

Tap the "+" icon (the song section button) at the topRight of the timeline;  then tap "All Sections".

  • Opening Garage Band files in Logic Express

I'm a school music teacher and have just started using Logic Express 7 to open kids' Garage Band files for tidying up and polishing.(Still a beginner with logic I'm afraid!) Have just purchased Logic Express 8 update, but haven't installed it because I heard that it won't open Garage Band 3 files. Is this true? If so, is it possible to have both 7 and 8 running independently on the computer? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The original release of LE8 had a bug which required a workaround to open GB files. The subsequent 8.0.1 update fixed that. After you install LE8, go to Software Update and install the 8.0.1 update and you will be fine.

  • Garage Band 4.1.1 Crashes

Yesterday I downloaded and installed Garage Band 4.1.1 after reading at iLounge about its support for making custom ringtones for the iPhone and exporting them to iTunes. I followed my usual routine when downloading updates through Software Update - repair permissions, download and install, repair permissions. Today I tried to make a ringtone following the ten-step instructions at iLounge and could not get beyond the main Garage Band window for more than a few seconds before it crashes unexpectedly. I restarted several times, repaired permissions again, tried beginning a new project, opening an existing project (the one I named and saved from trying to start a new one), but nothing works. It crashes within seconds of opening its main window each and every time.
After talking to a Mac friend of mine later today, I went looking for, downloaded, and installed iLife Support 8.1.1, of which I was not previously aware. Still no change - crash, crash, crash.
The crash report for sending to Apple, among a LOT of other things I don't understand, says "Exception: EXCBADACCESS (0x0001) Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000000 Thread 0 Crashed:"
I have no idea what that means.
I upgraded to this Mac Pro in mid-October from my old 733 mHz G4 and this is the first problem I have encountered. This is also the first time I have tried to use Garage Band, which came pre-installed on the computer along with the other iLife '08 applications, so whatever is crashing it could have been present in the 4.1 version before I installed 4.1.1 for all I know.
Does anyone out these know what is going on and what I might do to fix this?
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Help! Size of garage band song too big when exported

I'm trying to share songs I've created with Garage band. For some reason they are way too large (40 - 60MB) to attach to an email and send. They shouldn't be that big, they are just average sized songs. Thats the size that they each came out when I exported it from garage band to itunes. A friend recomended a program Audacity to reduce their size (or bitrate?) but I haven't a clue as to how to use it to make my songs normal size. Is there some simple way to reduce their size so that I can send them to people?
Also, the second part of my question is I would like the songs to be in a format readable not only by Mac users but by PC users as well.
As you can see I know very little about this stuff but I really need to send these songs out, any bit of help would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou, Marc.

We get posts like this one here fairly often, and I can't understand it.
Go look at your CD collection. Every 3-minute song on any CD takes up 30 MB of file space. Every 5-minute song takes up 50MB of file space.
It's the same with GarageBand, because GarageBand records and mixes music to 16-bit, 44.1KHz two-channel stereo, just like on a CD. One minute of stereo music takes up approximately 10 MB.
Complaining that a five minute song in GarageBand takes up 50 MB is like complaining that a foot has twelve inches in it, or that a kilogram contains 1000 grams.
Use iTunes to burn your GarageBand songs to a CD in the regular audio CD format. Then mail the CD to your friends. They'll be able to listen to it on a Windows PC or a regular CD player at home or in their car.
You can use iTunes to convert your recording into an MP3 that is as small as you want it, but the smaller the end result, the poorer the audio quality.

  • Hi total noob here, any good tutorials on how to use garage band?

Any one know of any good tutorials on the general use of garage band '11 for a complete beginner? I am just getting started and would like a decent walk through. Any suggestions?

  • How can I burn to an external optic drive in Garage Band?

I am a voice teacher. I record every lesson and burn it to a CD for my students. Since updating to the most recent iteration of Garage Band, it only allows for burning to the internal optic drive. My external drive is much faster and is situated in another room so that I can begin the next lesson. I'd like to be able to use it again for practical reasons. So, does Garage Band allow for native burning to an external drive and I just don't see it?

Which version of GarageBand are you asking about?
GarageBand '11 requires an internal optical drive, and the newest GarageBand 10.0 as well.
Insert a recordable CD in your computer’s optical drive. Before burning, be sure your computer supports the recordable CD you are using. Only computers with disc-burning capability can be used to burn a song to a CD.
Choose Share > “Burn Song to CD.”
Added: It does not help, to share the song to iTunes and burn a playlist from iTunes, since iTunes requires an internal optical drive as well.

  • TS1702 Garage Band App is in "waiting" stage. Will not download onto iPhone 4 with updated software (5.1.1) using iTunes with most recent update.

A friend gifted me the garage band application for my iPhone 4. I have updated the phones software (5.1.1) as well as the software for iTunes. However thee app has been stuck on "waiting" for days now.

    I'm running iTunes 10.6.3.
Macintosh has never allowed the user to update and or utilize any app or feature if the Operating System was inadequate to do so. Your answer "iOS 6 requires 10.6.8 to run iTunes 10.7" is ineffective at this point and mute. The update should not have been aloud over Wifi or 3G Network to iPhone without the ability to authenticate resources required or needed to operate both iPhnoe iOS and Desktop OS together.
The issue, as has already been explained is that the version of iTunes on the computer will not work with iOS6.
iOS updates via Wi-Fi have nothing to do with iTunes on the computer and does not care what version is on the computer.  Personally, I find it completely moronic to update via Wi-Fi as there is really no option for backup or a restore from backup if the update fails.  To me, it seems like a great way for the user to create issues for themselves that do not need to exist.
As there is no officially supported method to downgrade the iOS, the only option left if syncing is desired is to upgrade iTunes on the computer.
I really do not understand why you seem so defensive about updating iTunes.  Update iTunes on the computer, then sync the device, if that's what you want.
If that's not what you want, other options include updating apps directly on the device via Wi-Fi or 3G or living with it as is.

  • Spoken word and Garage Band

I will begin work on a book soon which will require interviewing many people. Rather than taking notes I plan on recording on my Mac with a Snowball. Is Garage Band suited for spoken word or is there some other software better for this? What about software that will convert spoken word to text?
    Thanks for your input.

Is Garage Band suited for spoken word
At it's core, GB is a "Multi Track Recorder" What you record on those tracks is up to you, guitar, violin, or vox, GB will record it fine if you use a decent mic (the snowball is a good mic)
or is there some other software better for this?
If I were doing it, I'd probably use an Audio Editor, but that's personal preference

What about software that will convert spoken word to text?
Forget about that as an option.

  • How to convert garage band mp3 to mp4a for iBooks Author

I wanted to share a quick and easy tip for converting mp3 audio fiiles done in Garage Band for a book in iBooks Author. SImply click  on the mp3 podcast and drag it into Quick Time Player and when the audio file comes up in Quick Time, export the file. The export will convert the audio podcast into the mp4a format required by iBooks Author. This file can be dragged into the media box provided by the Widget. Simple, easy.  I am getting ready to publish a book of 70 podcasts.

Jeanette... I believe you are talking about an M4A file (also know as AAC). MP4 files files are what Apple used to use in the iTUnes Store and are DRM (digital rights management). Being that iBooks Author only accepts M4A, it is what's you want to use.
If you have iTunes, you can use it to convert an MP3 to an M4A very easily. here is a YouTube tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7nZRjg7zMw

  • How to get full sound library for Garage Band

I recently purchased the upgrade for Garage Band on my 06 iMac.  I received a huge library of sounds with the upgrade.  However, two days later, we had a power spike and I lost that computer.  So - I bought a New MacBook Pro Retna with the latest version of Garage Band on it, however, it is missing what seems likes hundreds of real instrument sounds.  Any suggestions?  Can't seem to find a way to downlod all thode extra great sounds like strings and sound FX.
    Thanks.

I recently purchased the upgrade for Garage Band on my 06 iMac.
What kind of upgrade did you buy? Jam Packs for GarageBand, like "Symphony Orchestra"? They are not included in the preinstalled version that comes with a new mac.
it is missing what seems likes hundreds of real instrument sounds.
Are loops missing or instruments? If loops are missing, do they appear to greyed out in the loop browser? If they are greyed out, have you pressed the little arrow to the right of the loop name, to download the additional content?
To be able to download the additional content, you have to accept the preinstalled iLife to your AppleID at the AppStore. Sign into the AppStore, go to the "Purchased" tab - "Accept" section, and press the "Accept" button for your iLife apps.
    Regards
    Léonie
If it are the JamPack, that are missing, post back please.
