Is Garageband for me?

Back in 2004 I spent several weeks on a sound project using Garageband 1. My requirements were not very onerous: up to 6 tracks, non-destructive pan and volume, no loops or anything similar, all source material was recorded by microphone, and away I went.
I now have Garageband 2.0.2 on my computer, but it has been there unopened since it arrived with my G5 in 2006. Now I'm just about to embark on several months of various sound projects and was wondering if the Garageband I have is suitable, and if not, whether the latest version would be. Or do I need to go upmarket?
I made notes in 2004 about the limitations I came across, and this one was a biggie, but I was able to live with it because it as only a small project:
+Bars within a project cannot be deleted. If you end up with space inside a project the only way to delete it is to export the project, or part of it, and then use Sound Studio to delete the space.+
I wrote that six years ago and I think what it means is that when I cut and moved regions around, I ended up with bars – and therefore space – I couldn't get rid of.
So, regarding the latest version of Garageband (or, I'm hoping, G2.0.2):
Q1: Can bars with nothing in them be deleted?
Q2: Do I have to have bars at all? I don't need them.
If Sound Studio had non-destructive pans and volume controls, I could probably make do with it.

Bars within a project cannot be deleted. If you end up with space inside a project the only way to delete it is to export the project, or part of it, and then use Sound Studio to delete the space.
Are you talking about deleting from one track while keeping the other ones, or do you mean deleting whole passages from your song? In your version, indeed a gap would occur, but it's easy to fix by moving regions to the left. In the latest GB (after GB08, if I remember correctly), you can delete stuff from a track without creating a gap. To delete bars from the whole project, you can either proceed like that, cutting all tracks at the same time, or you can use the Arrange Track to create an arrange region and delete it.
Do I have to have bars at all? I don't need them.
No, for your purposes it's probably better to set the counter to real time (minutes and seconds) instead of musical time. That will automatically turn off the snap-to-grid function too. Should be possible with your version though.
GB 3 basically added podcast functionality to your version, so you don't need that. As for the new features of GB 4 (= 08) and GB 09, look at this:

  • How do you open Garageband for iPad files with Garageband?

I was led to believe that Garageband could open up Garageband For iPad files, but not vice versa.
However when a friend sent me his Garageband For iPad file, and I tried to open it, a "compatibility updater" started running then stopped halfway through and told me Garageband was "unable to complete the download" and directed me to go to Apple help.
    Here I am.
Anybody got any idea how to open (and work on) this file?
    Tank you in advance.
    -Dave-id

Apparently there were a two updaters I had to run first, before letting the compatability updater do it's thing.
And since I got my Garageband for Mac through the APP store I could only do my updating through that.
So if anyone else is having that same problem, update, update, update!

  • I have GarageBand for iPad 2 and noticed that there are far fewer loops for iPad than for apple laptops. Is there a library available of apple loops? I haven't been able to find any if there are. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Update: An Apple rep called me today to update the status of my return. I was told that the replacements for the BLACK iPad 2's was still another 3 weeks out (at least) so they offered me a brand new WHITE 16GB iPad 2. I could have that or continue waiting. I opted to go ahead and accept the offer of a new white one. Worst case scenario if I don't like the white one I have buddy that just bought a 16GB black one that he would be willing to swap it.

Problem with GarageBand for iOS 6/7 Iphone 3gs / 4
    Hello,
On February 16, bought the GarageBand for iOS which was free and so I find and install it on my 3GS .
Take the demo: Curtain Call Demo
    and within the instruments :
    audio Recorder
    Sampler
    Smart Drums
    Smart Strings
    Smart Bass
    Smart Keyboard
    Smart Guitar
    Keyboard
    Drums
    Guitar Amp
1.4.1 is the latest version for ios 6.
Configure my AppleID on a Iphone 4 and install the program , the version I have the Iphone 4 is the orange ( different from 3gs ) icon and put it on the AppStore : ios 2.0.1 for ios7.
    With these instruments :
    audio Recorder
Sampler ( to download the instrument )
Smart Drums ( to download the instrument )
Smart Strings (Download the instrument )
Smart Bass ( to download the instrument )
Smart Keyboard ( to download the instrument )
    Smart Guitar
    Keyboard
    Drums
Guitar Amp ( to download the instrument )
and if I give what I need to restore tells me if I bought it I did not restore anything and tells me to buy :
Complete collection of GarageBand instruments and sound at a price of : € 4.49
As they are 2 different versions ? More than anything I say because I have to pay for the instruments in the 2.0.1 version of the Iphone 4 ... ?
And besides not wearing demo Demo Curtain Call : (
GarageBand 1.x If you are upgrading it using iTunes on a Mac or PC, you can restore the original collection of instruments and sounds. There is no need to buy this collection. Press "You've already purchased?" When displayed on iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.
this puts on the AppStore but I have tried to restore as I wrote above, and does not work. There is nothing to restore.
    regards

I've been having the same problem. However, I believe my problem is due to the 3G issues I've been having. I don't have internet access even when the 3G symbol appears, so probably my iphone keeps trying to connect to the network and has its battery drained! Have you been having the same issue?

  • Get an older version of GarageBand for iOS (pre 2.0.1)?

How do I get an older version of GarageBand for iOS (pre 2.0.1)? Other than this method :
    https://sites.google.com/site/appleclubfhs/support/advice-and-articles/app-store -downloading-older-versions-of-apps-ios
I have been all over that article trying to figure this issue out. The problem for me is, my app store, my wife's app store, my friend's app stores, etc. all have updated versions of GarageBand iOS and we have updated iOS to 7. I can't downgrade to iOS 6 any longer. I've asked a friend to trade me his old iPad for my newer one! And on and on to no avail.
Is there a way I can download a pre - 2.0.1 version of GarageBand iOS from a 3rd party? Can the file be placed somewhere and then onto my Mac via iTunes? I have contacted app store support about this. They offered to refund my $4.99, but cannot give me my also purchased (on a different account and updated there as well) old version of GB iOS.
I have a compatibility issue between the latest GB for iOS and Logic Pro 9 on the Mac. LP 9 will not open the latest version of GB iOS. I cannot download LP 10 bc my 2007 MP is 32-bit EFI. I'm not comfortable w/ the hacks for getting Mavericks, etc. as I'm not computer savvy. I'm a songwriter who wants to write and record as simply as possible. My current set-up runs like a tank. GB iOS is great for getting ideas down when on the road. Then I flesh things out on the Mac in LP and add the audio tracks there as well.
Anyone know a workaround for opening GB 2.0.1 iOS in LP9? I don't want the audio BTW, just the MIDI. I can find the audio by show package contents, etc. but I can't see the MIDI info in the folder. Maybe my OSX won't recognize as I could possibly do this manually? When I unpack a pre-2.0.1 GB file on the Mac, I can see both the audio and the MIDI, but not on the new GB ".band" file. Any thoughts or ideas are welcomed. Thank you!

    16 GB RAM
    2 HD's
    Logic Pro 9.1.8
    Snow Leopard 10.6.8

Thank you! Can you please explain? Can I still record in GB iOS and then use the MIDI synth app? Where is the MIDI synth app - on the iPad or Mac?  How do I get the MIDI info to the Mac - by iRig MIDI or USB? Please break down the process if you can and I will try it. Looks like great idea, I just need a little more info. Thanks!

I'm new using Logic, i've been using garageband for quite awhile now though but my question is just basic. When i want to record electric guitar while clicking the software option it brings me to alot of guitar sounds that i want to chose. I chose the twangy electric or the distorted strat but i only hear clean sounds. No matter what kind of guitar sound i chose in the library it only produces clean guitar. How can i make it sound like it supposed to? Did i miss something i should do?

This definitely has me stumped as I'm unsure as to why your guitar can be heard, but with none of the channel strips plugins applied to the sound.
On the record enabled channel strip that contains your guitar input, is the "I" button located near the "R" active? Also, if you record your guitar, can you hear the FX applied to it when you play back the recorded track?

  • Is there anyway to record more than one track at a time on garageband for ipad?

Just wondering if that is possible or in the works?

GarageBand for iPad only allows to record on one track at a time. That is the selcted one that turns into the Instrument View where the actual recording is done.
If multi-track recording is in the works, nobody know except Apple and they won't usually pre-announce that kind a things. My guess, it will not be implemented.
    Hope that helps

  • How do I delete audio files on GarageBand for iPad?

In GarageBand for iPad, When I click on the audio files button, there are three songs in there that I have  imported to iTunes from my iPad. How do I delete these?

Connect iPad to computer and open iTunes. Select the iPad.
Click on the Apps tab and from there scroll down to the bottom.
There you should see a FileSharing section. Highlight Garageband in the app list and you should see your 3 songs on the "Garageband Documents" box to the right and be able to delete the from there.

GB for iPad doesn't have volume automation, you'd need to import the project into GB on a Mac to create the fade with a volume curve.
as an alt, finish your song and export the audio file, then import the audio file in an audio editor and create a volume fade with that:

  • GarageBand for iPad -- too many instruments?

Ugh.  I'm completely lost in GarageBand.  I was just messing around and when I tapped "instruments," it said I had already recorded eight and I would have to delete some tracks.  Well, I have no idea what that means.   Delete tracks from the demo?  That's my first question.
My second is: the red "recording" band stays at the top of my iPad when I exit GB, but I don't THINK I'm recording.  What's that all about?  Where are these recordings stored?  Can I get rid of them?
Third, how do you "start a new song" or whatever?  I seem to be stuck in the demo.
Is there a manual for this thing?  Thank you.

Once a song has eight tracks you can't add an addional instrument to the project. You could delete one of the instrument tracks from the demo if you wanted to experiment with it.
It would be better if they had used the word Saving instead of Recording. As far as I can tell all it is doing is saving the current state of your project. The fact that it requires a background task to do this suggests it is probably trying to optimse its use of storage when it is not active. Like most iOS apps it uses a private storage area. You can delete songs you no longer want to free up memory from within the GB interface.
To create a new song tap My Songs then use the + tool.
When a song is open press the ? top right for help, or view the GarageBand for iOS Help pages

When I use find file http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/30073/find-file (which does tend to find files that "Finder" can't), it's not coming up with any other itunes library files that have been modified in the past week, which I know it would have been - unfortunately, I don't have a very recent backup of the hard drive.  It would be a few months old so it wouldn't have the complete library on it....any ideas?  I'm wondering if restarting the computer might help but have been afraid to do so in case it would make it harder to recover anything...I was looking at this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4211589?start=0&tstart=0 in the hopes that it might have a helpful suggestion but it's definitely a different scenario.

  • Why are chords not in order of I, ii, iii, IV, V, Vi, Vii, in GarageBand for iPad?

In Garageband for iPad, for each instrument such as Smart Piano, the chords that you can play are listed "out of order." For example, in the key of C major, the chords are listed in the order of Em, Am, Dm, G, C, F, Bflat, Bdim. Is there a reason they are not listed in order such as CDEFGABC? Also, why is Bdim even there at all? This might be a newbie question, but I don't have much working knowledge of actual music theory.

Bdim is the VII chord - rather we should ask why is the Bb there! Bb is not in the key of C major!
However, great questions overall for a 'newbie' to music theory!
My guess... iii-vi-ii-V-I-VI-vii is a  circle progression   -   iii-vi-ii-V-I-VI-VII-vii is a circle progression with a borrowed VII from the C minor scale (see below)
the vi–ii–V–I progression is a chord progression (also called the circle progression for the circle of fifths, along which it travels). It is "undoubtedly the most common and the strongest of all harmonic progressions" and consists of "adjacent roots in ascending fourth or descending fifth relationship"
    - from circle progression wikipedia article
And also from the circle progression wikipedia article :
'The circle progression may also contain dominant seventh chords."
    - Just don't know why they went with a flat! maybe they figure a key change around the seventh chord wouldn't be to drastic and allow some playful dissonance
Try playing that Bb, you'll notice its sounds slightly brighter than all the other chords, has a different mood. That's because its out of key, but just slightly, that it is still usable - its a borrowed chord (wikipedia has article on this too) - and there are not hard and fast rules for what you can and cant play!  In music theory, this is known as a non-diatonic chord.

  • Recording with Garageband for IOS

I wanted to share a recording or two using the ipad so that people could see that garageband for IOS doesn't suck.  I didn't spend too much time throwing them together, but at the same time they're not too horrible either. They give a pretty decent idea of what a 1st gen ipad with a 5 dollar app is capable of in regards to guitar and shred-type guitar stuff. I'm kind of sick of reading and listening to scathing reviews on how the ipad and Garageband in particular is for non-musicians and noobs who want to sound like they're making music... (ooo that could describe me... yikes!) If I could have had an ipad-like device when I was just getting started, I think that I would be a much better player today. I am totally blown away at the expectations people have of a 5 dollar program, when they haven't spent the time trying to see what it does do well. Anyways, here's hoping that this post helps people out that are trying to find out what the capabilities of an ipad with GB are, especially if they are a guitarist. At the end of the day, it is still the person using the device that either makes it sound horrible, mediocre or amazing...
So anyways, I decided to make a quick track where I didn't spend too much time on the music, and I used only what was in GB in regards to my tones and stuff; That means all stock amp and pedal combinations. I also wanted a track that focused on guitar parts, and making the best of what the app has to offer. I'm sure with some tweaking and mucking around there could be some much cooler tones generated, but hey... it is what it is. Also, I used a Godin LGXT direct into the ipad with an Apogee Jam. Very inexpensive. Bass and drums were recorded with the Line6 Mobile25. The tablet's screen works too, but I find that the keyboard is a lot more accurate, especially for drums. Obviously, you could go into the drum and guitar parts and edit and tweak the parts further, creating drum parts that feel and sound a bit more lifelike, but I didn't do that here; this one was about direct recorded electric guitar...
    https://soundcloud.com/jayesskerr/ipadgination
Arguably, you could also record your stuff via microphones also. In this case I used a Roland VS880 as a mixer (It was handy), with 4 CAD microphones connected to it to capture my drum kit. (I'm not much of a drummer, but you get the idea...) I then just lined out of the VS880 into the apogee Jam into the ipad. BANG! This app could work very easily for drummers also... or people who must have their tone and not a digital preset...
    https://soundcloud.com/jayesskerr/just-drums
    I own a couple of good mac boxes loaded with killer software, and I also have some decent interfaces. They are pretty superior in regards to the amount of options that they present, without a doubt. And then when you include all of the 3rd party plugins and loops and stuff that you can get... well, it's very, very nice. The ipad intrigued me because it's self contained, and is extremely portable. It has limitations which force one to be kind of clever in order to work around them. Also, the recording process with an ipad is very, very quick. Setup time is minimal.  So anyways, with just Garageband, and an Apogee Jam (I have the irig connector also, but in my opinion the Jam is so much superior...). The only other thing I'd reccomend is the Line6 Mobilekeys25 which I used here; MUCH easier to enter notes in on bass and drums. Here's some points to sum up my opinions on my experience with the device;
No it's not better than Logic or Cubase or prottols or something with an interface. It's only a 5 dollar app on a 600 dollar tablet (In my case an outdated 1st generation ipad).
There's only 8 tracks, but you can bounce and merge.
The amount of sections is limited, but you can work around that too...
It's extremely portable. Way less gear to haul and set up, but feel free to use your own stuff with it also...
GB on a tablet is very, very easy to learn. Super intuitive and quick to use.
The amount of sections is limited, but again you could always just make another song project and then stitch it together later...
The amp and pedal emulations aren't as good as Guitar Rig, a line6 Pod Pro hd, or a FAS Axe-FXII. But they aren't horrible, they are certainly pretty good for the price of 5 bucks...
If you're broke/poor and want to get into recording and sharing your music, this is the ideal way to go about it. Your recording device (The ipad) also makes documents, does email, takes and edits pictures, takes and edits video... The only thing standing in the way of you sounding great is you...
The 'merge track' option is a powerful tool, especially on your midi tracks.
No pitch correction. Waaaaaahhh boo hoo! You're gonna have to learn how to sing. Plus, it's only 5 bucks!
Don't want to use the internal drum sounds? Or want to use your amp's miced sound? Get a small mixer, and connect your mic to that. Then connect the mic to the Apogee Jam (There are other products out there that work better and in stereo, but this would do in a pinch) and you should be good to go.
I recommend using a small keyboard like the Line6 Mobile Keys 25 to enter your midi/virtual instruments stuff in. For me, using just the pad means more track editing after I enter it...
The last point is this; there's other software besides just GB. Cubasis anyone?
Anyways, thanks for checking this out, I hope that it helps, and if anyone else has any opposing viewpoints or points to add, please do.

Yes, I do it all the time. The best I have found is the Apogee iMiC. Here is a link.  http://www.apogeedigital.com/products/mic.php

  • Suggestions for new instruments on GarageBand for iPad

Two ideas my friends and I have been talking about is for the next update for GarageBand should definitely include Smart Brass layed out the same way as Smart Strings with different types of ensembles for jazz, concert, etc. Then the same deal for woodwind instruments. There should also be new drums called Marching Equipment. Snares, tenors, bass drums, and crash cymbals to design your own cadences or with brass, even your own drum corp show. Another idea that is a little more far fetched is to making something for dubstep and bass drops. Just some ideas I hope get seen and produced for the next update.

You need to use this route: GarageBand for iOS Feedback.

  • Concerning midi data in GarageBand for iOS: can we copy midi data from one virtual instrument to another?

Concerning midi data in GarageBand for iOS: can we copy midi data from one virtual instrument to another?
For instance: I play my "lucky take" on the virtual piano, and now I am curious how it would sound on let's say a organ. Normally I would select the midi content out of the piano track and copy it into the organ track. I cannot figure out how to do this in GarageBand for iOS. Is there anyone out there with a solution?
    Thanks!

It is limited, how you can move regions between tracks. Basically, you can move between tracks with the same touch instrument.  See the help: http://help.apple.com/garageband/ipad/2.0/index.html#chsec12c15d
    Move a region
Drag the region left or right to move it forward or back in time. Align the left edge of the region with the bar or beat on the ruler where you want it to start playing.
Drag the region up or down to move it to another track with the same Touch Instrument. You can also drag regions between Keyboard and Sampler tracks, and between Audio Recorder and Guitar Amp tracks. Smart Drums regions cannot be dragged to another Smart Drums track.
If you move a region so that it overlaps another region, the overlapped part of the “covered” region is deleted.
    Paste a region
You can paste a region you have copied, or paste an audio file from an app that supports copying audio to the clipboard. GarageBand supports 44.1 kHz sample rate, 16-bit depth uncompressed audio files.
You can paste copied regions to another track with the same Touch Instrument. You can also paste regions between Keyboard and Sampler tracks, and between Audio Recorder and Guitar Amp tracks. Smart Drums regions cannot be pasted to another Smart Drums track. Audio files copied from another app can be pasted to Audio Recorder or Guitar Amp tracks.
Move the playhead to the point where you want the region to start.
Tap the header of the track where you want to paste the region to select the track.
Tap the track where you want to paste the region, then tap Paste. You can also tap an empty area of Tracks view, then tap Paste. In this case the region is pasted into the currently selected track.

Is it possible to change the tempo mid-song in GarageBand for iPad? And if so, how do you do it?

The tempo setting applies to the whole song, but only to the recorded midi instruments or loops. It's a bit of a kludge, but you could record different sections at different tempos, export each as an AIFF file, then glue them together in a new project.
The same goes for the key.
