Is GeForce 9400M with VRAM of 256 adequate for PhotoshopCS4?

My MacBook pro (August 2009) has crashed multiple times, especially in the last few weeks as I was experimenting with study material for Photoshop CS4. The initial files are often 20+ MB. During processing they can become as large as 240 MB. When I completed a file of such size, during the save as process, the system saved but also crashed. Could some of the problem be the relatively small VRAM. My ancient Dell Inspiron 9300 was configured with 1GB of ram, and that was seven years ago. But I'm thinking there's been a lot of tech advancement in that many years. However, multiple crashes are annoying. My file sizes will not get smaller, at least not initially before specific merging and downsizing. In the future, I hope to get a Mac Pro desktop. It is has four graphic cards, each with an indicated Memory of 512. Does that mean approximately 2GB of VRAM? Has new technology really made a smaller VRAM indication that much better than four 1GB configuration?

For my own information, I stepped through the operation to convert a photo into a painting. The efficiency remained at 100% within PhotoshopCS4. The free ram began at 2.93GB, and gradually became: 2.77, 2.76, 2.73, 2.68, 2.69 (up?), 2.71 (up?), 2.65, 2.65, 2.64, 2.69 (up?), and finally ended at 2.67. So, as is, the system and PsCS4 are apparently working OK, without compromising system RAM.
The GPU ram is indicated to have 256 MB. I don't know if that amount is subtracted from the 4GB, or is in addition to. The "About Mac" information lists them separately. My history is with PCs where the RAM configuration is separate from the GPU, especially since a PC card is a separate unit. However, I understand that the MacBook Pro GPU "card" is not a card but is built-into the Mac framework (shades of uni-body PCs). If what you report is the working situation with the MacBook, darn!
As an additional step, I had disconnected a bothersome Western Digital external drive that created a persistent "open pool" error every ten seconds. That would have been a system disfunction, not a GPU issue, but it did seem to mess up and slow down everything.
Based on your input and general attributes of my MacBook Pro, my use of PsCS4 is probably as good as I am going to get for a while. I cannot change the GPU VRAM. The discussions regarding Mac Pro reference only Video output benefits of a GPU and that there are very few options for different cards (and that's in the face of Nvidia's super fast and very large VRAM GPU cards!!).

  • NVIDIA GeForce 9400M Drivers for Yosemite?

Are there updated video drivers for the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M in a mid 2009 MBP for Yosemite?

I recently upgraded to Yosemite on my mid 2009 MBP and now I have maximum resolution of 1080p - so i suspect its the nvidia Graphics card that needs essential updates. Also after extensive search Im starting to get the feeling Apple have cut us off ...  no surprises there.

  • Graphics glitches occurring with the GeForce 9400M?

Has anyone seen the same type of graphics glitches occurring with the GeForce 9400M in the new MacBooks that occurred in the MacBook Pros with GeForce 8600M GT?
The link to that previous issue is here: http://apcmag.com/appleacknowledges_macbook_pro_graphics_glitch_offersfix.htm
When viewing web pages with both Safari and Firefox, the page gets corrupted when I scroll down with the trackpad (this does not happen when scrolling with arrow keys). Any type of animation or video on a page is also really jumpy and flashes in and out.
It sounds like this was a hardware issue with the graphics card in the last version of the MBPs. Has anyone seen this issue in their new MacBooks?

    Hi there,
the same issue on my new MBP Late 2008. First, it happens in Safari, then I tried Firefox and there it was too. I switched the graphics to the second GPU (the better) and it seems the problem were solved. Back on the mobile GPU it never happened again.
I've never tried, but I think the problem occurs when to much Apps are opened and the Mac runs out of memory. The logout for switching the graphics gave the memory back and the better GPU has it's own memory.

  • Nvidia GeForce 9400M makes my MacBook Pro screen blinks

    I am using a Macbook Pro 2.4MHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB 1067MHz DDR3.
That's the one with the Nvidia GeForce 9400M and the Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT.
Using the Nvidia GeForce 9400M, as my default video card, seems to make my screen blinks. That is random.
Apple's Hardware Test show no problems.
When I am using the Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT the screen blinks stops.
I am sure that all started after updating to Mac OS X Snow Leopard. I am currently running Mac OS X 10.6.5.
Is this a software problem or there is a problem with the Nvidia GeForce 9400M chip?
Does any is experiencing the same problem?
+the problem withe the screen blinking is quite old. I am mostly using my Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT as my default video card with no problem at all, but I want to be able to use my Nvidia GeForce 9400M because of the better battery life.
    Any help will be valuable.+
    Tom.

I have the same issue with mine and sadly I missed the date to get Applecare on this machine (they usually call but this time around they didn't).  ***** that I didn't get this resolved before my warranty ran out .. I'm certainly not going to shell out for a replacement motherboard out of pocket.  I now use the 9600 graphics exclusively and can almost watch my battery drop by the minute.
On a side note I'm not very impressed with the quality control Apple has had with their portables in the last few years.  I bought this unit refurbished and it took two units to get one that worked properly, and even then this one never did as it's had this video blinking issue since day one.  The problem is I didn't really notice it until recently when I started using it running more often on battery and decided to use the mobile chipset to save battery time.  This is the third MBP I've had and their 3rd MBP that's had motherboard issues.
When it comes time to replace this one I'm seriously considering going with a macbook air or something else.  Can't justify spending the money on more MBP's with such terrible track records.

  • Is NVIDIA GeForce 9400 the same as GeForce 9400M?

Final Cut Pro X system requirements claim I need a GeForce 9400M to use the software but my Mac says I simply have a GeForce 9400. Are they essentially the same?

    Hi,
Going to the Nvidia website, it is clear that they regard the 9400 and the 9400M as different. Is it only the form factor (M seems to be meant for laptops) or are there greater differences? I don't know. Mac users are usually saved from the Windows problems with driver updates, but that's another issue.
But my aging iMac does well enough with FCP X and seems to have the 9400 graphics card.
I agree, try the trial version and see what happens.

  • NVIDIA GeForce 9400m graphic installation issue.

After installing Windows XP with SP2 32-bits via Boot Camp, I inserted my OS X that does all the installation of drivers which is said to include the graphic drivers but after restarting the computer, my screen resolution went to 680x520 and to 4-bits. Everything were big, fat and ugly with geeky colors everywhere.
I've been trying to solve this problem for about 2 weeks already but still with no luck even asking this question again and again in a dozen forums. People tried and gave me the download links for the graphic driver though non of them works as most gives me the error 'Couldn't locate the compatible driver for your current hardware' or some stuff like that.
And to anyone of you that has the same exact computer as mine which is the iMac 20inch 2.66 GHz with NVIDIA GeForce 9400m graphic card that could install a working driver and is able to play games now .. PLEASE give me the link to that driver. So that I can test if it's my computers problem before handing it to the stores.
And one more question - are notebook GPU drivers suppose to work on desktops too? I've received much download link but all I see are notebook GPU drivers. Please help me with this massive issue.
    Thanks in advanced.

    Hey Daveyx1,
Have you checked all the software updates and installed all of the available ones? especially the EFI firmware? Check the EFI firmware version on your system and verify that is the latest from this link. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237.
If the version is not right you need to install the software updates and restart the Mac. After installing the firmware updates install the Boot Camp drivers again.
Also I know that you had tried most of the possible stuffs to get the issue resolved. However if you haven't tried that please try this.
    1. Boot to Windows in Boot Camp
    2. Right click on My Computer and select Manage
    3. Check the display drivers installed
    4. Right click on that and choose to update driver
    5. When the wizard comes up let it search for the drivers first
    6. If it is not finding the appropriate drivers repeat the steps and choose to install from the disk
    7. Insert the Boot Camp driver disk (i.e. Mac OS X install disk) and try to update the driver.
This should update the drivers for the graphic card and the issue may be resolved. If the issue persists, please run an AHT as there may be an issue with either the Boot Camp drivers in the DVD or the Card itself.
You will need to contact the Apple store for a different disk and try installing the Boot Camp drivers or analyzing the Graphic card issues.
    Hope this helps you............
    Regards !!!!

  • System-Wide Graphics Lag on GeForce 9400M

I have a MacBook Pro (5,4) running OS X 10.6.4 with only a GeForce 9400M, and for a while now I've noticed that there's usually a noticeable amount of jerkiness in animations when I interact with the Dock, use Exposé, etc. Everything is as smooth as can be when I'm hooked up to an external monitor, but otherwise it exhibits these problems maybe 70% of the time, so I know it's not a performance issue. Has anyone else experienced the same problem?

  • Lion + GeForce 9400m = NG

I am realitively new to Mac's, historically a unix and windows guy... but I always had this impression that Apple does a decent job of maintaining support for the older products. I have been waiting for a fix for the driver issues (http://avatron.com/lion). I understand the same issues are effecting other users with other software but I am unable to find anything on Apple acknowledging the problem let alone working towards an update. I feel like I've taken a performance hit after upgrading to Lion (I haven't bother to benchmark it) but I am willing to accept slower performance from my laptop as it's more than 1 year old... but I feel like I've become a pretty loyal Apple user (iPad 2, iPhone 3g, 4, and Macbook Pro), this is the first time that I've had a problem where no one is really talking about it, and there doesn't seem to be any plan to correct it.
    Anyone else frustrated by this?

I have just had the same issue.
I downloaded the Air Display app [http://avatron.com/apps/air-display] through iTunes but did not realise until afterwards when downloading their Mac drivers that the Nvidia Geforce 9400M (among others) is not supported.
DisplayPad [http://cleancutcode.com/displaypad/] also do not support this graphics card.
One of the main reasons I bought the iPad was to use as a portable second display when not in the office, it would be great if this worked.
Are there any plans by Apple to look into this issue?

    Hi.
To fix this problem i've to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file and add to kernel line  vmalloc=192M option.
More information here: http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/L … ssues.html at Kernel virtual address space exhaustion on the X86 platform section.
I hope this can help someone

  • Problem with MSI Board and MSI Geforce 4 with Windows XP

    I have a MSI 845E Max(MS-6566E)

                  Celeron 1.7 gig
                  Soundblaster Live
                  2 Network Cards
                  and the usual stuff.
I have loaded Windows 98 on my system and it works fine. But then I load Windows XP on and the system starts rebooting. After it reboots my video resets itself and I have to load it back in. I will then reboot and sometimes it will work, sometimes it will not. I try playing a game or even searching the net for awhile, but out of the blue the system will give a very quick blue screen and reboot. And of course when it boots up the video is reset. I loaded all the drivers I could find on MSI's website and used every video driver made by Nvidia and MSI. If I do a Windows XP update to my system the computer will not even boot up. it will just keep rebooting when it is trying to bring up the login screen.  Anyone else run into this with Windows XP?

My system sometime freezes. Why ???

  • Need Geforce 9400m driver for OSX lion

Please help, I can't find the driver for the geforce 9400m for OSX lion on the Nvidia's website. There's only the drivers for OSX leopard and snow leopard.

Try turning off bluetooth. I noticed after doing some research and using xbench to test my system, GUI resources almost tripled after turning off bluetooth. I know thats odd but of all the fixes and ideas I have found online, this seems to be the only one which increased gaming performance. Be nice if we could download updated drivers from nvidia though. It will only be a matter of time before we have the ability to get lion drivers through nvidias site. Snow leopard is already there so im sure lion is to follow soon. If this doesnt help, go get yourself an optimization tool like onyx or CleanMyMac. This helped me out a little bit. Not much but enough to get another few FPS. Hope this helps.

btw, I have macbook late 2008 aluminum unibody running OSX mavericks & a windows 7 ultimate on bootcamp..

While we all have MacBooks in this forum not all of us use BootCamp. There's a BootCamp Support Community where everybody uses BootCamp. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

byte [] output2 = parameter.getKey(); Both ways give me same results, but now I wanted to achieve same password as from Crypto++.
This code give same result with 128 bit keys but not with 192 ot 256 bit. (I tried 8/16/24 byte salts)
Where is problem ? Padding ? Because when I used all same parameter with 128 and 192 bit I got these results:
    128bit:7b4b7b59b230003f452fa4fe7c0eb9c1
    192bit:7b4b7b59b230003f452fa4fe7c0eb9c19231f5a471741535
    My concret case:
    input: password: "321TestovacieHeslo"
    salt:"20CB84A0CE6F4C5B"
    iter:3456
And I need this 24 byte larger key from Crypto++:
    C6408B48D17A1A38F51AC7F05DE24CBB967049DF9FDDCB8F
    but I got this:
    1eb4b95846cdfb60eae519c8efa2569011e30e964be7cfbd
    Can anybody help me ?
    Thanks

Have you tried using "ntp update-calendar"?

  • Will Match replace tracks with bitrates over 256?

I have quite a few tracks on my hard drive that I've burned from CDs with higher bitrates that 256.  Some are in the 600s, 900s, even over a thousand.
If I use iTunes Match will Match replace those tracks (if they have them) with the lower 256 bitrate?  I'm not necessarily opposed to freeing up the hard drive space, but if it does replace them, will I be able to notice the difference?

Uncompressed aiff or wav from CD is 1411kbps, that's how the math works out on 44100 samples per second times 16 bits times two channels.
Not much point in going much higher than 320 on lossy compression since it gets close to the size of lossless compressed.
Match uploads mp3 or lossy AAC 320 and under, converts lossless and uncompressed formats to 256 as it uploads.  I suspect it would probably also convert lossy compressed over 320 although those are likely pretty rare.
I believe it gives an error on files over 48k sample rate, haven't checked 24 bit uncompressed.
