Is good to have RAC 10g inside a super dome HP?
Well I do not know if hp-ux is the best OS to have this type of installation?
I am just starting to think about it, but I do not know how good it could be?
Do you have any information that you can share with me?
A RAC beginner.
Paola.
You normally don't choose hardware and RAC like that. There are usually much more arguments to consider.
Anyway, I've been running on HP-UX PA-RISC for 2+ years. Good platform.
It's behind Solaris and Linux in terms of releases lagging and might have slightly more bugs but they got better recently. It's more common than, say, AIX.
I expect that HP-UX on Itanium is a little more buggy than on PA-RISC but that might be changing at some point.
All is based on subjective experience.

Question about RAC 10g on server running AIX and domain name changes
We have several 10g clusters running on IBM p-Series AIX servers, and our company is changing the domain name for our network. I am concerned that if we do not change the domain names in the TNSNAMES.ora file and also the /etc/hosts file on each server, the cluster will no longer function. We are using CRS (version 10.2.0.3) and ASM within each cluster.
Does anyone know where I can find information about changing the domain name that was set up as part of the CRS and database installs for RAC? Does anyone have experience doing this, and would be willing to share a few insights? Thanks in advance for any advice you can give!You may be able to use the VIPCA utility for RAC to change or modify the public and private settings for your domain names on AIX. Also, the Oracle 10g DBCA "Database Configuration Assistant" should be of use to change your settings for your RAC environment.
Also, see here for a good IBM Redbook that covers Oracle 10g RAC on AIX platforms:

Oracle RAC 10g on Solaris 10 in a non-global zone
I need to run Oracle RAC 10g on Solaris 10 in a non-global zone as I must cap the CPUs used for Oracle licensing limitations. My question is a simple one, but one for which I'm getting conflicting information depending upon whom I ask.
If I want to run RAC in a non-global zone on two nodes, does this require the use of Solaris Cluster?
I know there are good reasons to use Solaris Cluster, but the company for which I work cannot afford the additional expense of Solaris Cluster at this time. Is it possible to run Oracle RAC 10g in a capped container without Solaris Cluster or is Solaris Cluster absolutely required?
Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide.AFAIK, Oracle 10g RAC is not supported in solaris containers.
It is however supported in Solaris zone clusters...in order to use it, you would have to use Sun Cluster 3.2 (iinm). -
Compatibility with Oracle RAC 10g and E-business 11i ?
Hi netpros,
I am currently helping the sales guys with a tender. The customer requires the solution to be compatible for delivering Oracle RAC 10g and e-business 11i. we are proposing a combination of Cat6509E for the core with Infiniband server switches. Are these devices OK for use with Oracle. I have not much experience with Data centers and so any help is much appreciated.Hi,
It just so happens Cisco have a paper on exactly this subject (Oracle and e-business 11i) here:
http://www.cisco.com/application/pdf/en/us/guest/netsol/ns50/c649/ccmigration_09186a00807688ce.pdf
The design is somewhat OTT as it includes everything which Cisco thinks may be even vaguely useful, including ACE and FWSM modules. However, it's very useful as a comparison document and does include some good design tips, and the references at the end are also worth following up.
I wouldn't want to get into the whole Infiniband vs Fiber Channel argument (the doc uses MDS switches) but both work just fine in the DC environment.

Problem of using OCFS2 as shared storage to install RAC 10g on VMware
Hi, all
I am installing a RAC 10g cluster with two linux nodes on VMware. I created a shared 5G disk for the two nodes as shared storage partition. By using OCFS2 tools, i formatted this shared storage partition and successfully auto mounted it on both nodes.
Before installing, i use the command "runcluvfy.sh stage -pre crsinst -n node1,node2" to determine the installation prerequisites. Everything is ok except an error "Could not find a suitable set of interfaces for VIPs.". By searching the web, i found this error could be safely ignored.
The OCFS2 works well on both nodes, i formatted the shared partition as ocfs2 file system and configure o2bc to auto start ocfs service. I mounted the shared disk on both nodes at /ocfs directory. By adding an entry into both nodes' /etc/fstab, this partition can be auto mounted at system boots. I could access files in shared partition on both nodes.
My problem is that, when installing clusterware, at the stage "Specify Oracle Cluster Registry", I enter "/ocfs/OCRFILE" for Specify OCR Location and "/ocfs/OCRFILE_Mirror" for Specify OCR Mirror Location. But got an error as following:
----- Error Message ----
The location /ocfs/OCRFILE, entered for the Oracle Cluster Registry(OCR) is not shared across all the nodes in the cluster. Specify a shared raw partition or cluster file system that is visible by the same name on all nodes of the cluster.
------ Error Message ---
I don't know why the OUI can't recognize /ocfs as shared partition. On both nodes, using command "mounted.ocfs2 -f", i can get the result:
Device FS Nodes
/dev/sdb1 ocfs2 node1, node2
What's the possible wrong? Any help is appreciated!
Addition information:
1) uname -r
2.6.9-42.0.0.0.1.EL
2) Permission of shared partition

I am not sure how far this following solution is relevant to your problem (regardless when it was originally posted - may help someone who is reading this thread), here is what I faced and here is how I fixed it:
I was setting up RAC using VMWare. I prepared rac1 [installed OS, configured disks, users, etc] and the made a copy of it as rac2. So far so good. When, as per the guide I was following for RAC configuration, I started OCFS2 configuration, faced the following error on RAC2 when I tried to mount the /dev/adb1:
===================================================
[Root @ *rac2* ~] # mount - t ocfs2 - o datavolume, nointr / dev / sdb1 / ocfs
ocfs2_hb_ctl: OCFS2 DIRECTORY corrupted WHILE reading uuid ocfs2_hb_ctl: OCFS2 DIRECTORY corrupted WHILE reading uuid
mount.ocfs2: Error WHEN attempting TO run / sbin / ocfs2_hb_ctl: "Operation not permitted" mount.ocfs2: Error WHEN attempting TO run / sbin / ocfs2_hb_ctl: "Operation not permitted"
===================================================
After a lot of "googling around", I finally bumped into a page, the kind person who posted the solution said [in my words below and more detailed ]:
o shutdown both rac1 and rac2
o in VMWare, "edit virtual machine settings" for rac1
o remove the disk [make sure you drop the correct one]
o recreate it and select *"allocate all disk space now"* [with same name and in the same directory where it was before]
o start rac1 and login as *"root"* and *"fdisk /dev/sdb"* [or whichever is/was your disk where you r installing ocfs2]
Once done, repeat the steps for configuring OCFS2. I was successfully able to mount the disk on both machines.
All this problem was apparently caused by not choosing "allocate all disk space now" option while creating the disk to be used for OCFS2.
If you still have any questions or problem, email me at [email protected] and I'll try to get back to you at my earliest.
Good luck!

RAC 10g on Linux VMs problems with smp
I'm following Vincent Chan's article "Install Oracle RAC 10g on Oracle Enterprise Linux Using VMware Server" in order to get up to speed on Oracle RAC on Linux. I've had good success so far but it appears that when the kernel was created it was created as smp even though I only had processor count set to 1. I went on to choose the oracleasm-2.6.9-42.0.0.1EL driver for UP kernel not realizing I had an smp kernel. Now that I'm trying to create ASM disks I get the following message:
Writing Oracle ASM library driver configuration: [ OK ]
Loading module "oracleasm": Unable to load module "oracleasm"
[FAILED]
I'm assuming this problem is due to the wrong asm driver being installed.
So my question is, since I truly have a single processor virtual machine, should I try to rebuild the kernel as UP? Or should I try to re-install the smp version of oracleasm and keep the kernal as smp with 1 processor?

Thank youI had this problem and resolved it by transporting the file to the installation server with the correct ftp datatype (binary).
On page 54 of the install guide (..Server\Oracle_Business_Intelligence\doc\doc\bi.1013\b31765.pdf) that comes with the installation files, there is an instruction to make sure that any ftp activity is done in binary.
This may not have occured with the license.xml file if you use a tool which offers the "feature" of automatic datatype recognition.
Hope this helps. -
Error when adding a new node to RAC 10g
Hi all,
I have a RAC 10g environment test in Linux Red Hat Umbreakble 5 with two nodes. This RAC is fine on 2 nodes.
I want to add a new node (rac3) of the following way:
- The node 1 (rac1) is started and the instance ORCL1 is online.
- The node 2 (rac2) is offline. i.e the machine is off.
- The node 3 (rac3). The machine is on and already configured
So that when I execute the CRS_home\oui\bin\addnode.bat on node 1 and put the information of node 3 (Public node name, Private node name, Virtual host name) and press next I get the following message:
OUI-35000: Fatal cluster error encountered (PRKC-1071 Nodes rac2 did not respond to ping in 30 seconds) - Sure: The machine is off;
My question is: Can´t I add a new node on RAC if a node is off ?
Anybody can help me.
Thanks.
(Wander Brazil)Interesting question.
You might have better luck getting an answer if you ask where people discuss RAC, instead of asking where people report documentation issues. (Go to http://forums.oracle.com and scroll down to 'Grid Computing' to see RAC forums.) -

Edited by: user13405005 on Aug 29, 2011 11:40 PMHi,
don't worry about GSD. GSD is only used if you also run 9i databases in the cluster. Even though it should state as OFFLINE (not as unknown), I would not care about that.
However ONS should not be in the status UNKNOWN.
Can you do the following:
srvctl start nodeapps -n
To restart the ONS and see if it stays.
Also post the output on onsctl debug
(All from CRS Home).

However, I shall try again.
There is no relationship between instance failure and VIP failover. How can there be? What if you are running ten instances on each node, and one fails? Would you want the VIP to relocate? And I've already told you how to test it: kill the node. Just reboot it. -

Solaris x86 with Oracle RAC 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.3.0
Hello,
Maybe you can help me (new on RMAN backup) in doing this.
I have configured a single Oracle 10g database to have backup with RMAN with following steps:
1. $ mkdir $ORACLE_BASE/rman_scripts
2. $ mkdir $ORACLE_BASE/logs
3. $ mkdir $ORACLE_BASE/tracking
4. $ mkdir $ORACLE_BASE/c_backup
5. $ sqlplus sys/<password> as sysdba
6. SQL> alter system set db_recovery_file_dest_size = 50G scope=both;
7. SQL> alter system set db_recovery_file_dest='${ ORACLE_BASE}/flash_recovery_ area' scope=both;
8. SQL> alter system set log_archive_dest_10='location= use_db_recovery_file_dest';
9. SQL> shutdown immediate
10. SQL> startup nomount
11. SQL> alter database archivelog;
12. SQL> alter database open;
13. SQL> alter database enable block change tracking using file '${ORACLE_BASE}/tracking/rman_ change_track.f';
14. $ rman target /
15. RMAN> CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK
TO '/var/opt/oracle/flash_ recovery_area/ORCL/c_backup/% F';
16. RMAN> CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;
17. RMAN> CONFIGURE BACKUP OPTIMIZATION ON;
18. RMAN> CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO RECOVERY WINDOW OF 7 DAYS;
19. RMAN> exit
I need to configure incremental backup with RMAN on a two node Solaris x86 with Oracle RAC 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.3.0 installation.
We also use ASM to store database files, and have Oracle software installed on separate file systems (two Oracle roots for Node1 and Node2).
I have following questions:
1) where to put Flash Recovery Area (FRA)?
I saw recommendations to put FRA on the ASM, is this the best way to do it?
2) Can I put FRA on another file system (not on the ASM) which is available only from Node1? This way I can save space on the ASM.
3) Is it possible/recommended to run RMAN from Node1 only?
Below is the script used to run RMAN on the normal Oracle database (without RAC) which I need to change :
=============================================================================================
2.0 Oracle backup script: /opt/app/oracle/rman_scripts/backup.sh
Use this for daily backups, possiblly as a cron job.
Once a week run this: /opt/app/oracle/rman_scripts/backup.sh FULL
All other days of the week: /opt/app/oracle/rman_scripts/backup.sh INCREMENTAL
Note: You may have to change ORACLE_SID, ORACLE_BASE below to match your database.
=============================================================================================
#!/usr/bin/ksh
ORACLE_SID=orcl
ORACLE_BASE=/opt/app/oracle
ORACLE_HOME=${ORACLE_BASE}/product/10.2.0/db_1
PATH=${ORACLE_HOME}/bin:/usr/bin
LOGDIR=${ORACLE_BASE}/logs
LOGFILE=${LOGDIR}/rman.log
if [[ $# < 1 ]]
then
echo "usage: backup.sh FULL|INCREMENTAL"
exit;
fi
BACKUPTYPE=${1}
full='FULL'
incremental='INCREMENTAL'
if [[ $BACKUPTYPE == $full ]]
then
$ORACLE_HOME/bin/rman target / nocatalog log ${LOGFILE} append << eof
run {
backup database;
SQL 'alter system archive log current';
backup archivelog all;
delete noprompt obsolete;
exit;
eof
echo ''

if [[ $BACKUPTYPE == $incremental ]]
then
$ORACLE_HOME/bin/rman target / nocatalog log ${LOGFILE} append << eof
run {
backup database;
backup incremental level 1 database;
SQL 'alter system archive log current';
backup archivelog all;
delete noprompt obsolete;
exit;
eof
echo ''
fiHi [email protected],
Q1) where to put Flash Recovery Area (FRA)?
A1) With RAC: on the shared storage
I saw recommendations to put FRA on the ASM, is this the best way to do it?
If you want your backups to be available for both nodes you have to use shared storage or tape using an mml library.
So if you want to use the FRA for rman backups and the database is on ASM just make ASM the standard for the FRA as well.
Q2) Can I put FRA on another file system (not on the ASM) which is available only from Node1? This way I can save space on the ASM.
A2) Than you cannot recover in case Node1 is down. Best would be to send your storage admin to a training course so he can manage the clustered raw devices needed for ASM.
Q3) Is it possible/recommended to run RMAN from Node1 only?
A3) No see A2.

Tycho
