Is GoogleTalk Audio Chat Between Mac & PC Possible?

Using latest version of iChat AV, I tried GoogleTalk with a PC-user (using our respective gmail accounts) and was able only to do typed chat - both the audio and video buttons remain greyed out. Tried with Plantronics headset, Telex microphone, and Canon GL-1 camera in various combinations. Have opened various ports as suggested in other threads - no joy! Is there a way to do this?
Thanks for any insight.
G4 MDD, OS X 10.4.5, simple Airport connection to wireless broadband.

HI AZ Bob,
Have you set up the Jabber side of your iChat ?
In your Jabber GoogleTalk account is the server in Server Settings talk.google.com ?
It is not Gmail or anything like that.
Have you opened the Jabber ports 5220, 5222, 5223 in your Mac Firewall if On, your modem and any router you may have.
Google use the 5223 port to log on which is not listed in the Apple Doc 93208 at Note 1.
Can you use the AJbber/GoogleTalk side to Video chat to a Mac user ?

  • Audio chat between G3 and macbook

    Hi,
trying to get my sisters Imac G3 500 panther to audio chat with the current whitebook. My sister can audio chat between the two using the same router, but cannot connect when the whitebook is being used away from the house. The whitebook can successfully video and audio chat to other computers. is this a setting issue with the imac? The whitebook is a mac.com account while the imac is AIM.
    Thanks,
    Phil.

    Hi,
    Ok.
Can you confirm that they are at the same location ?
I am sure I understand that they are using the same device to get on to the Internet (the BT Home Hub)
    Umm.
Remote IP Invalid (error 4 to those users above 10.4.7 who can view the Logs) is an issue normally only seen at the end that is away from a Leopard user.
It normally points to an Issue at the Leopard end where their iChat (Yours in this case) has a LAN set up where iChat can "see" the internet twice.
Caused by two DHCP servers on the same LAN. Connecting by Ethernet and WiFi to the same router, Same with a neighbour's wifi whilst Ethernet to your own, having Parallels installed and running Sharing the Macs IP and allied to that having Internet Sharing On in System Preferences > Sharing in Leopard.
The BT HOME HUB has been an issue for iChat 2 and iChat 3 users in the past.
Things improved when BT updated the firmware to 6.2.2.6 (AS seen in these Pics for the BT HOME HUB original)
The issue was that they offer a VoIP service (Phones over the Internet) and this uses the same port that ichat uses to send the SIP invite after you send the Visible one.
BT HOME HUB Instructions for Access and Pics
This site is base on doing Port Forwarding.
She does not need or in fact Want to do this but the site does tell her how to access the set up pages.
    Two things.
One from the pics you can see this device can do UPnP
She/they should check this is active. Most likely it is if the MacBook can answer or contact you. (Port Forwarding (or Triggering) or DMZ should not be Enabled.
In the first real BT Pic you will see it list BT Broadband Talk and BT FON
One, if not both, are likely to be something to do with using a phone over the internet. (The FON thing might be a hotspot Wifi thing)
The Setting is most likely controlled in the Advanced > Telephony options (tabs and subtabs)
She will need to check what if any port this says the BT HOME HUB uses.
The Previous version was in fact made by Thomson-Alcatel and these also had a specific issue that other Thomson-Alcatels have/had until it got to the BT own firmware I mentioned.
I am not sure who makes this one and the pics give no clues
Basically the device forces any SIP data to port 5060
This is the port she should look for in the telephony settings and see if anything implies this is what is restricting things.
Hopefully Defcom will also post as he tends to know a bit more about the latest on these.
I hope this helps so far.

  • Problems Setting Up Audio Chat between Panther and Tiger Powerbooks

    Hi,
My pal Colin just bought a 1.67ghz Powerbook running Tiger 4.3 (I think). I'm on 1.33 ghz PB running 10.3.9. I've managed to have an audio chat once (with Ralph! ) but I don't use ichat much as most friends don't use macs. But Colin and I want to use audio chat - in common with an earlier attempt with a different friend, it isn't working. Colin's name appears in my buddy list with the green/white phone - OK. My name appears in his buddy list with a phone - OK. When we invite each other to audio chat, we get connections timing out - looks like the UDP SIP invite to (IP address):5060 isn't getting through on Colin's machine. His ichat bonjour is enabled but only mentions the two Bonjour ports, not 5060. We configured two ports to handle 5060 and 5190. Still didn't work. Do you need to restart after configuring ports in order to benefit from opening them? Or is there some other problem? Anybody got any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Mark,
Iin his Mac Firewall if On he needs:
    TCP 5190
    UDP 5060, 5190, 5678, 16384-16403
See here for these ports and the Jabber ones an d Bonjour ones as well.
IF he has a modem that is in default set up he may have to open the ports there as well.

NOTE: note 1 is wrong. It should read
    1. All iChat AV traffic is UDP except for ports 5190 and 5298, which need to be open for both TCP and UDP; and 5220, 5222, which need to be open for TCP only.

  • Audio problems with video chat between Mac & PC

    Hello,
My parents and I both recently purchased web cams to use for video chats. I am on a Mac, using an iSight through iChat, while they have a PC and are using a Logitech Quickcam 5000 through AOL IM version 5.9. I have successfully video chatted with other mac/isight users. Almost everything works fine chatting with my parents - the video works, and they can hear me. I however, am unable to hear them. I thought this might be a problem on their end, but when they open a video chat with me, an error message pops up saying that I "do not support the talk feature, or am not accepting talk invitations." They have been able to get the audio to work when doing so between two PCs using AOL IM. Is there anything I can do on my end that will let their audio come through to me?
    1.6 GHz PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Hi Raoul,
Welcome To The Apple Discussion Pages.
If you mean you are trying to do Audio only chats with a PC which is using AIM 5.9 or 5.5 then it will not work.
The AIM application has never been able to do Audio Only chats to iChat
One end needs to have a camera (preferably the Mac end).
The PC end stilll needs to do the "Tuning" after getting to the Porperties.
They may also need to enable the application through the XP firewall.
And it goes without saying they have to be on XP.

  • Once and for all: is video/audio chat from Mac to PC using MSN possible?

I've read all the posts, and all the jabber guides, and Mercury stuff, and it all seems like a huge hassle. I have a friend overseas who uses MSN (like EVERYONE overseas). he has a pc (again, like everyone overseas since Macs are 2x as expensive over there) with a webcam. I have AIM, MSN, and Yahoo accounts. I run Adium, and I can text with him but no vid or audio options are there. so, simply put, why is this so darn difficult? I suppose if we both had skype, that would be one solution. here are my questions:
    - why is there no audio or video in adium? (if there's a post on their site that I should have read, forgive me)
    - why doesn't MSN messenger for the Mac support audio and video?
    - does jabber really allow AV chat using the MSN protocol? (once the 15 or so setup steps are completed)?
    - is there, or will there be, a simple solution to this?
I have many, many friends both in the US and overseas, and all my friends overseas have PCs and MSN and webcams, and I have a very advanced MacBook, and I can't communicate with them the way I should be able to.
thanks! and I apologize if any of this has been covered in other posts, but I wanted to get it all down in one place.

    Hi
i would say use Skype http://www.skype.com/intl/en-gb/download/skype/macosx/
aMSN and Mercury only do video no audio, these are the only 2 progams that do video on the MSN network.

  • Multiperson audio chat with Mac/iChat and XP/AIM buddies

Looking at using a G5 for video-conferencing. I should be able to set up multiperson video chats with other Mac/iChat buddies.
What happens if an XP/AIM buddy wishes to join the conference? I expect they wont see a multiperson video display like iChat but can they audio conference with everyone? Can they video conference with the host Mac (my G5)?
One day I will talk them into buying Macs!

  • One way video chat between MAC and PC

My sister has latest version of AIM on her PC. We've tested it before and she was able to receive my audio and video signals. She could respond with audio only. She is now in a different state and suddenly she can only hear me. She receives no video. On my MAC, I see the video fine, and it says it's on a video chat with my sister. But she can only hear me. I have checked the preferences and it shows a 100% audio signal and 0% video. Can someone help?

    HI Jenny,
She obviously unlpugged her camera to move.
She needs to do the tuning again

  • Video chat between .mac account and AIM account

I have a G4 ibook and the person I am trying to video chat with has a Macbook pro. I do not have a camera attached to my machine. Nonetheless, he has one built in. I am unable to see him during our chat sessions. All I see is a blank white screen. I assume it has something to do with the fact that I aam using an AIM account. I dont want to spring foor a .mac account so does anyone know a way to get around this?
    Thanks.

    HI jle2,
He should be able to invite you to a One way Video chat.
You are likely to have to alter your Quicktime streaming sped to allow the data to reach iChat properly.
Go to System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab and change the speed in the drop down to match your download speed or a max of 1.5meg.

  • Trouble video chatting between Mac Mini and PC. Prob. with Skype and IChat

    Hello,
I hope someone can help my dad and I because we have been trying to solve this problem since Xmas. I will try to give you as much information on this as I can so that someone can hopefully help us.
He has a Mac Mini (OS 10.3.9) and a Logitech Quickcam 9.5 and I have a PC. We have tried IChat 2.1 to AIM 5.9 and initially he could see me and hear me and I could see him but couldn't hear him. Now when we try to connect. I can see myself but can't hear or see him. We have looked through a lot of the recent forums and have tried what was suggested with no luck.
We have also tried Mac Skype 2.0.06 to PC Skype 2.5.0.151 but with Skype he can see and hear me but I can either only hear him (when he has not started the video) or only see him when he has started the video. We cannot seem to get both going at the same time. He has made sure that "enable skype video" is ticked in the skype preferences and we have tried ticking "start my video automatically" but it still doesn't seem to work. I would prefer to use Skype if possible because the video is larger and I am more familiar with it.
If someone can help us with this, I would be so happy!
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi fantabuloussara,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions
Ok If this was a new computer and iChat was started when the computer was the first time then some settings will not have taken effect.
Go to System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming or Connection Speed tab (depending if Quicktime 6 or 7).
Set the drop down to 1.5Mbps/T1/LAN and restart iChat.
IS the Mac Firewall ON ?
In that case you will need this at the second pic.

  • Can you use audio chat with PCs with microphones?

Is there a simple way to link audio chat between Windows and Mac?

You can audio-chat with a PC user with the latest version of AIM and a mic (on the PC). On the Mac side though, you need to have a camera (camcorder or iSight) plugged in. You cannot audio-chat with a PC AIM user without a camera.
I use my powerbook 1.33 GHz, iChat AV3 and my Sony DV camcorder (FW) to audio-chat with friends using PCs eqipped with AIM and just a mic. No problems at all.

  • Can not audio chat or screen share in bonjour between 2 10.5 macs.

  • After years of owning all things Mac, I am finally trying to use iChat, and can't get it to work. I see my buddy, but all I can do is send a message--the video and audio chat icons are gray, as is inviting to a video chat under Buddies.

After years of owning all things Mac, I am finally trying to use iChat, and can't get it to work. I am using gmail, and I see my buddy (no camera icon next to her name), but all I can do is send a message--the video and audio chat icons are gray, as is inviting to a video chat under Buddies. My buddy has the same problem as I.  We are able to do video chat through gmail, but I had hoped to use iChat.  I am using OS 10.6.8, iChat v. 5.0.3.  What am I missing?

    HI,
iChat will Video chat to another iChat in a Jabber Buddy List (Google run a Jabber server for GoogleTalk)
However it will not Video to the Web Page login to iGoogle or the Web Mail Page login.  (where people can Google Chat as it were in a  Web Browser).
Nor does it video to the Google Talk Stand alone app for PCs or any other Jabber apps on any platform.
iChat uses a connection Process called SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) which is also used by other VoIP devices.
Jabber/XMPP invited the Jingle Protocol for Jabber Applications.
Google have included this in their Standalone app and the Plug-in for Web Browsers on both PCs and Mac (you can get this as a Standalone Plug-in or as part of Chrome)
More on this here  This article has been changed several time in the recent months.  It now claims a greater involvement by Google in writing the Jingle Library (Although now Google's version does not work with the others)
This tends to mean that using the web Login to Google to Chat also cannot video chat to other Jabber apps that are using Jingle.
If your Buddy is using iChat then check the Video Menu has two items to Enable Camera/Video chat and Microphone/Audio chats are ticked.
In the View Menu the Show Status Items should be ticked (Selecting them toggles the tick and the function On or Off)
It could be Internet speed but at this stage I would doubt this at this stage.

  • How do I chat between users that are under one .mac/MobileMe family acct?

How do I chat between users that are under one .mac/MobileMe family acct? We are all under one account, but in different locations, using iChat 4.0.5 and OS 10.5.4. Thank you.

The only way is to create separate accounts under either AIM or Jabber (for example Googletalk). Then everybody logs into iChat with a different user and you can have full iChat functionality (except encryption which works only if you have different .mac accounts). If some members of your family have already a gmail/googlemail account then they can use this account information to log into iChat if you create a Jabber account with the gmail user information. Otherwise go to www.aim.com, request a screen name and use this user information to create an AIM account in iChat.
    Have fun.

  • Can aim users and .mac users video/audio chat with each other?

today was a crazy day with ichat. two of my friends were able to video chat 1 on 1. my mac is qualified to handle 3-way or 4-way chats. when they invite me, the bubble pops up. i hit accept and the loading spindle keeps on spinning for minutes until it just denies me entrance. they get an error saying i never accepted, so as soon as they invite me, they don't get any other response back.
could it be that i am on the AIM network and both of them are on the .mac network?
iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   1.8ghz, 1.5gig ram, 3rd party camcorder, latest iChat. router installed.

can aim users and .mac users video/audio chat with each other?
Yes. Apple does not have its own publicly available IM service; iChat uses the AIM network, and there are few functional differences between AIM and .Mac screen names. If they are using a client other than iChat, there may be interoperability issues with audio and video chats, or the other client may not support those types of chatting.

  • Audio chat with iChat (Mac) and Trillian (PC) not working

I use iChat on my Mac (actually, we have tried two different ones with the same results) and the person I want to have an audio chat with is using Trillian Basic (just downloaded) for his PC. We tried using the AIM client on his PC and that didn't work... I looked through the forums and several suggested using Trillian.
We are both able to text chat with each other, but when I try to initiate an audio chat, it tells me almost immediately that the other user has declined my invitation. He never gets an alert. Basically the same thing happens the other way as well.
Any ideas? Is there a setting on the PC that needs to be set for this to work? I can iChat with Audio to other iChat users from my Mac(s), so I am thinking that the PC is the problem.
    Thanks!
    \frank

    Frank
I use iChat to videochat with my sons, who use Trillian on the PC. It's not that easy to set up, opening ports, enabling Trillian through the XP firewall, etc.
You might fare better with Skype. Download from:
    Mac version
    PC version
If you do want to persist with Trillian (and the results are much better once you've got it set up), try this tutorial:

    or this:

PS You can't do audio-only chats between iChat and AIM.
