Is Huey any good?

I'm using an Apple 20" LCD, and I've done the software calibration and created a custom monitor profile. However, the more i learn about colour management, the more i feel i should calibrate my monitor corectly, ie using hardware. Bearing in mind im just an amateur photographer, and the photos i take are primarily for personal use can anyone recomend the new Pantone Huey or similarly priced colour calibration tool?
Cheers,
Svendo

I just finished a review for PPA mag. In a nutshell, it's a decent device and actually pretty fantastic at this price point. But it's designed for a color management phobic user who wouldn't know a profile from a pickle. It's very easy to use and pretty fast. I wouldn't trade one in for an Eye-One Display-2 or better. I have a bit of a beef with the ambient light tracking such that I think users should control their environment rather than adjust the calibration. But lets face it, the users it's designed for (hobbyist more or less) can't or will not control their ambient conditions. So it's kind of interesting "fix".
On an Intel 20" iMac, it did a nice job using the default target values (they correlate to TRC gamma 2.2, CCT 6500K). The control panel wouldn't load on the Intel (a common issue).
Bottom line, if you're too thrifty to get an Eye-One Display or OPTIX or the idea of color management freaks you out, this is a great product and way, way better than eye-ball calibration (Adobe Gamma which even Adobe no longer supports or recommends).

  • Are there any good black box testing tools for j2me?

    Is there any good testing tools available for testing software on physical mobile devices?
    I would like to partially replace manual testing with automated testing using a test tool. It should work on physical devices, and with the help of a script it should be possible to execute predefined sequences of button pressings on the device. Preferably there should also be some way of deciding whether the test was a succes without having to do so entirely manually.
    The purpose with this would be to make it easier to go through the test protocols, which has to be done before every new software release.
    Deviceanywhere.com looks promising at first glance but it is rather costly. Still, does anyone have an opinion of it?
    Does anyone has experience of Mobile junit for this kind of testing? Is it possible to define series of physical button pressings with it? At first glance it doesn't seem so.

    You can collect the Organizational Health in Exchange 2010 console for Exchange 2003/2007/2010 and that will list very useful information about statistics in your organization like servers, databases, CALs, recipient, feature used etc...

  • Virtual PC 7 any good?

    Hi there, I am in the process of purchasing new workstations and server for our office (replacing our whole network). There are 2 schools of thought, that we should go all Mac or all PC. The all Mac side is just me! Right now we have a horrible mixed network architecture and really old machines. I want to keep things as clean, simple and robust as possible.
    The Mac network would consist of 2-3 workstations running the latest version of OS X and a server running OS X Server v10.4. The WSs would have to use Virtual PC in order to run the accounting sw package. My question is this - is it any good? Does one have to start the VPC before starting the windows sw. Where would the program files physically reside on the hard disk? Can you create aliases for these to put on the 'desktop'? I had some mixed experiences running 10.4.x on an old G4 (which had a hw problem with the processor or one of the boards) and OS 9 emulator, as it kept crashing all the time. The machine later totally died anyway, so the problems may well have arisen from this hw issue. I guess I'd have to wait for Microsoft Office 2008 to come out and use OpenOffice in the interim (we have some nasty formatted sales documents and leaflets that won't work very well in OpenOffice).
    If we were to buy PCs, then we were looking at using either W*ndows V*sta Business/Ultimate or W*ndows XP Professional on the workstations, and putting ubuntu linux on the server. I am a bit concerned about all the aggravation that I might get re anti-virus sw and anti-spyware, as one has to keep removing this constantly with PCs. I also don't like giving money to Microsoft lol
    Any thoughts or experiences would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks.
    Best
    Pat

    New Macs can't run VirtualPC at all. So if one of the new machines is a Mac, you'll want to get Boot Camp, VMWare, Parallels, or one of the Intel Mac solutions on my FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html#WINTEL
    VirtualPC is designed for use on your G5, and is no longer supported, but should work fine for any accounting package. The place where VirtualPC falls down is when you have insufficient RAM or hard disk space allocated to it for the version of Windows you use, which you'll also see in my FAQ above.
    You may even find CrossOver on a new Mac can run your accounting package without installing any Windows whatsoever, and be more secure.
    Or you may find a version of an accounting package for the Mac that will run your accounting data without installing any Windows software on your Mac. See alternatives to OpenOffice on my FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/crossplatform.html
    One can create aliases on the desktop for VirtualPC, though VirtualPC's software has to start up on its own. Boot Camp is a separate boot software
    Note: Intel is not G5, and rather is IBM. So that's a distinction you should make. All new Macs are Intel. Your profile says you have G5s which are now a generation older than what is out there.
    Viruses are almost unheard of on the Mac, and most people won't ever see a virus, unless they have to run Windows on the Mac. Your best bet is to tell that to your CIO, and tell them they'd have much lower support costs getting an all Mac network, as no anti-virus installations will be necessary and Macs for the most part just run. This FAQ page goes over those costs:

  • 24" iMac any good for games (compared to Mac Pro)

    Hi,
    I'm on my second Mac Pro and after no end of trouble so i'm hoping to exchange it for a 24" imac but i was wondering if it's any good for games?
    I would probably configure it with the 7600gt and maybe the 2.33ghz proccessor.
    My mac pro with the x1900xt ran Quake 4 and Doom3 etc at full stettings really well but i've just had to much trouble with it!

    The iMac would be fine for games for now, but you are stuck with the configuration that you purchase as there is no way (for now) to upgrade the video card.
    There is a thought that some OEMs might make an upgrade card, but as of now there are none.
    The big advantage of the Mac Pro is that it has the PCI-express video card that you can remove the stock card from and add a newer, better card.

  • Any good webcam suggestions?

    Any good suggestions for a webcam that is:
    -Not large, preferably a small one or medium-sized (one that can clip onto a flat screen monitor is ok, or one that stands on the desk)
    -Compatible with Snow Leopard
    -Mic included
    -USB/Firewire
    -High quality (smallest webcam isn't highest quality, I know this, but highest you can get for the size)
    -Not junky looking
    Have an early 2006 Mac Mini. Any good website references are welcome... As far as the price, I don't care, I will filter through those myself and/or bite the bullet. Thanks in advance!

  • PSE 6 Classroom in a book any good for PSE 10?

    I have just bought PSE 10 and am looking for a book to teach myself how to use it. A friend has PSE Classroom in a Book but for PSE 6. Will this book be any good or has PSE changed so much since version 6 - or introduced new things - that the book won't really be suitable?
    If this particular book won't be any good, does anybody have any recommendations? I like the Classroom in a Book style but am willing to try anything!
    I am using Windows 7 and have only limited experience of any photoediting software.
    Many thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

  • Is 24" iMac really any good?

    I know this is a vague question but hang with me.
    I am about to buy a 24" iMac and decided to look on these forums first to check if there are any problems with them.
    I have now read all sorts of horror stories regarding the screen (too bright/dead pixels/dark corners/etc...) Various problems with humming and misc noises coming from inside the Mac, and issues with audio quality output.
    One of the main reasons for going for a new machine is Boot Camp. Now having read the Boot Camp forum it seems the 24 incher just won't work at all with the latest beta of Boot Camp.
    Can I start a straw poll of owners with new 24" iMacs - are they any good? Are you happy with them? Is it the fact that we only heaar about the duff ones on these forums, or is it that a large percentage are inferior/faulty/unsatisfactory.
    Your thoughts/recommendations/experiences would be welcomed.
    Thanks

    I was going to post a new topic with this but I will post it here instead.
    I am on my second iMac in as many weeks, but this one is two hours old and it I am yet to find a fault with it.
    My first iMac had a single green stuck pixel, I called apple and they replaced it and where very good.
    I collected my new one about 3 hours ago from TNT and got it home. Took it out the box and notice the packaging was damaged and thought Oh god here we go...
    Turnt it on and spent 5 minutes looking at every single pixel on the display then I saw a single black dot.. luckily it was just a bit of dust!
    I booted it up, had trouble with setting up the keyboard, it just didnt work first time, But I got over that. Mouse was a doddle to set up! (both wireless)
    Now it is just working perfectly! Wireless is working great, iSight and Photobooth are fantastic! (I love the effects!!) The speakers are VERY good for a device that is so thin!
    I am yet to try a movie or DVD at the moment I am just playing with it, getting it configured and what not.
    There are dark corners on the display, but its really nothing to worry about. You dont really notice them, you just need to look really hard to find them.
    There is also a very important factor which many over look. It smells nice!!
    They keyboard is great, quiet and responsive, its white and I am a little scared of making it dirty!! it just looks so good. The mouse is a little heavy but I am just used to using a decent gaming mouse from my pc which is very light.
    Overall when you get a proper working one it works great, peforms fast and does exactly what it says on the tin.
    I dont get the so called brightness buzz, if I do, the noise from my PC is overpowering it and stopping me from hearing it so its really nothing to worry about.
    I was worried about the problems described here when I ordered but the thing is, this is a user support forum, IE the only people who are going to post are the ones with problems. If you get your mac and your not happy then call Apple as soon as possible and they will do every effort to ensure they get it fixed!

  • Are there any good code examples for displaying preview images in the storefront?

    I can gather other info using folio.xxx, but can not find any good examples to use for preview images.  Tried folio.getPreviewImage() with no success.  Oh, I should mention it is version 2.  Plenty of examples for version 1.
    Perhaps if I get a little more specific.
    I am calling up the folios via:
           adobeDPS.libraryService.folioMap.addedSignal.add(function(folios) {
                for (var i = 0; i < folios.length; i++) {
                    addFolio(folios[i]);
            }, this);
    This eventually works into a function where I am gathering and displaying folio data:
         var productId = folio.productId;
        var html  = "<div id='" + productId + "'>";
            html +=     "<a href='#'><img class='shadow' width='120' src='' border=0 /></a>";
            html +=     "<br /><span class='bold'>" + folio.title + "</span>";
            html += "</div>";
        this.$el = $(html);
    folio.title works fine to pull up the title, but I can no longer use folio.getPreviewURL in v2.  What code should I be using to set the src to the preview image?
    Thanks

    Have you looked at the default implementations of the library?
    In FolioItemView's render function, there is a function(follow the nested functions!):
    setTimeout(function(){ scope.loadPreviewImage() }, 100);
    It references this function (this doesn't copy well):
    loadPreviewImage: function() {
    if (this.el.parentElement) {
    var transaction = this.folio.getPreviewImage(135, 180, true);
    transaction.completedSignal.addOnce(this.getPreviewImageHandler, this);
    Going deeper, into the getPreviewImageHandler function is where you see the url value..
    if (transaction.state == adobeDPS.transactionManager.transactionStates.FINISHED && transaction.previewImageURL != null) {
                                  this.$el.find(".folio-thumb").attr("src", transaction.previewImageURL);
    Within the example is also code for supplying a preview when the Adobe API is not available:
    (Within the render function)
    var json = this.model.toJSON();
    $folioThumb.attr("src", json.libraryPreviewUrl);
    If you're making any changes to where the preview is displayed, you can just swap out the class ".folio-thumb" to whatever the class (or id) is of the element you're wanting to render the preview in.
