Is Hyper-threading enabled on the i5 and i7 iMacs

I am interested in upgrading to a 27" i5 or i7. According to intels site all i-core processors support Hyper-threading. At work I use a quad core Xeon on a HP computer with Windows 7. The system reports that I have 8 cores in performance monitor as it sees each core as 2 cores with Hyper-threading enabled in the Bios.
Does Apple enable hyper-theading in EFI and does Mac OSX see 8 cores in the activity monitor and correctly show the activity of each thread? I suspect if it only shows 4 cores that hyper-threading is not activated on the iMacs. I want to get the most out of the processors capabilities since I am paying a premium for it and so I wont get a current generation machine if it is crippling the processors ability to run 2 threads per core as intel advertises. I would expect with Grand Central in 10.6 that hyper-threading would dramatically increase performance.
Can someone answer this question definitively?

Intels site states clearly that the i3 i5 and i7 all support hyper threading.. if only the i7 supports it on the iMac then apple is crippling the chip..

I have mediator calling bpel. Mediator is exposed as web service. Whenever I run the service using "Test" button on EM with validation turned on
then it works and the process will be completed.
But I have initiate xml in the test suites. I select "UnitTests" and select my test case xml that was associated to "Initiate Message for operation",
I see that the process is still in the "Running" state. I put in exactly the same values as I use for testing the service from EM.
Did anybody face this issue? This happens only when we turn the validation to "Enabled" in EM.

Check your Incoming IMAP or POP and Outgoing SMTP email account settings
Use Apple's online Mail Setup Assistant to discover what the correct settings should be for both your Incoming (IMAP or POP) and Outgoing SMTP email servers. If your email service provider is not listed in the Mail Setup Assistant, visit your email service provider's website or contact their support staff to get the correct settings. You can use this "cheat sheet" when asking your email service provider about the settings you need.
After you have the correct email service provider settings, make sure Mail is configured properly.
Click here if your Incoming and Outgoing email account settings are correct, but the issue persists
What alert message is shown in the Mail Connection Doctor "Details" column affected account?
Click here if a "Could not connect to this (server type) server…" message appears
Click here if a "Trying to log in to this (email server provider name) account failed…" message or any other error message appears
If the issue persists, then you'll want to remove the account and then add it again using this article:

I'm assuming you're machine is OS X (please include this in the future, avoids assumptions). Are you using anti-virus software, if so, if you stop/exit the anti-virus software, does the installation proceed?
If not, or if the installation still does not proceed after stopping the anti-virus software, please try the offline installer, posted at the bottom of the Installation problems | Flash Player | Macpage, in the 'Still having problems' section.

Spell Checker is not working although it's enabled in the Settings and I've already installed the dictionary

the spell checker is not working correctly although all the settings needed are correct,
the dictionary's installed, the Spell checking is enabled from the “Browsing” section of “General” tab under “Advanced” heading .
but still it only underlines the misspelld words without giving me the probabilities of the right word .
this problem started to appear after I updated my browser version .
additionaly there is no "Add dictionary" or anything related to spell checking when I right-click the writing area .

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

I can't decide between the 20" and 24" iMac C2D

Hey all...
I am in the process of selling my Power Mac G5 Dual 1.8GHz with 2GB of RAM as I want to move to an iMac C2D. I keep flip flopping between the 20" and 24". The only upgrade I would get for either would be bumping the memory to 2GB. The price delta between the two is $500. That additional $500 buys me a larger screen, better video and better speakers. I am also leveraging my daughter's educational discount.
I don't use my Mac for business. I use it for email, web browsing and research. In addition, I am a heavy iLife user, except for Garage Band. I use iTunes and iPhoto a lot. I also import movies into iMovie and iDVD. It will be used every day after work for about 3 hours and a lot on the weekends.
My Power Mac is running fine and has served me well for the last two years. I figured I'd sell it while I can still get some decent money for it (my eBay auction ends tonight!).
I just really want an iMac. There is something to be said for using a Mac with an Apple display. My G5 was connected to a Dell 2005FPW 20" widescreen. I also have two AMD based machines running Windows/Linx connected to my new Dell 2407WFP 24" widescreen and it is almost too big! Those are used for gaming, development, virtual machines, etc.
Is the 24" overkill? I don't know. It looked beautiful last night in the Apple Store.
Thoughts. Comments? Suggestions?

Hi there. I recieved mu 24" imac on Thursday this week having sent back my 20" as soon as the 24" came out. It was the best decision i ever made. I do alot of photo retouching and editing as I am a photographer and have only just started playing with the computer. The screen makes a massive difference, not only for photo's but for all other things, it enables you to keep windows open at a good viewing size and see them all on screen at the same time.
I know its a difficult decision as had to convince my girlfriend that it was worth the extra cost, but i am so glad to have done it.
The 20" was lovely and a fantastic size, the extra 4" is a worthy investment.
I was worried it was overkill also, but after using it today fully for the first time i could not imagine having a smaller screen.
Hope this helps, using Photoshop and Aperture means i really appriciate the extra space, but when i browse the web the pages do tend to look a little lost!! ;o)

hey i just want to know what the difference is between the new and the old imac G5.. it seems that the new one came out after a few days i bought the old one.. but why is new one so inexpensive?
oh and also.. i want to buy some extra ram from apple store.. and it seems the new imac ram costs way less than the old one.. i don't get it..

The latest iMac uses DDR2 memory and the "old" one uses DDR memory.
The memory manufacturers have ramped up dor DDR2 memory and are starting to drop DDR memory. That is why new may be cheaper than old. Visit www.crucial.com to see this in action.

I had already done that before giving him the phone. I left iTunes Match on it because in my mind, he would have access to his music and more. I guess he did not like the clutter form having the entire music to have to browse through.
In any case, I fixed the problem by doing a factory reset and restore from backup.
I should not need to do that .. but that got rid of the iTunes Match from the device.

TS4209 I keep installing all the updates and my iMac still have the same issue, Please help.

I am tired of downloading updates. This issue has been there since the begining. PLesae help.

Move the Cookies.plist file from the Cookies folder to the Trash
Relaunch Safari. From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Empty Cache
Now try eBay.

Can you mix calls to the Posix and native thread librariess?

Is it possible to mix calls to different thread libraries within the same process.
We have a shared library interface to our product which is called from a customers application. In order to provide a thread safety we need to protect global data in this library with a mutex. However we do not know which thread library (if any) will be used by the calling application.
If we used a Posix mutex in our library would it work if the calling application was implemented using non-Posix threads?
Are the Posix and Solaris thead header files different interfaces to the same underlying implementation?
What overheads are there loading the thread library when it is not needed? If for example the calling application was implemented without using threads.
Would we have to test our interface with the different thread implementations available? eg /usr/lib/lwp/libthread.so, /usr/lib/sparcv9/libthread.so as well as /usr/lib/libthread.so.

I know the author of the original post wrote this long ago, but I thought I'd write a reply in case anyone else stumbles on this like I just did.

For complete information, refer to the Solaris "Multithreaded Programming Guide", available at http://docs.sun.com in the the Solaris 8 (or whatever version) Software Developer Collection.

I think the Solaris threads implementation was part of the Solaris OS before pthreads were supported on it. Anyway Solaris really uses "LWPs" (Lightweight Processes) at the kernel level, and user-level threads (POSIX or Solaris threads) are mapped onto LWPs.

- /usr/lib/lwp/libthread.so is the "alternate" Solaris threads library that does a 1-to-1 mapping of user-level threads to kernel-level-lwp's
- /usr/lib/sparcv9/libthread.so I think is the fully 64-bit version of the default libthread

DISABLE HYPER-THREADING!!!

In this topic (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1429910#1429910) jimsg4 suggested disabling Hyper-Threading. I did so, using the System Manager in WindowsXP, which is rebooting and hitting F2 when you get the startup screen, then navigating down to Hyper-Threading, and turning it off. That fixed all iPod/iTunes freezing problems, now it works like it should. So, if you have Hyper-Threading enabled in your box, try disabling it. That was an amazing shot in the dark, thanks jim!!!

Oracle Linux 6.2 - hyper-threading

two simple questions, I hope 8^)
if I installed OL 6.2 and then also upgraded to UEK R2, on X64 Intel server - both tasks done with hyper-threading enabled and then I want to disable hyper-threading after OS installation - do I need to make any OS system/parameter changes at Linux OS level or simply turn off H/T at hardware level and reboot the server ?
is there general recommendation re when H/T is beneficial on Oracle Linux with UEK ?
what about if I added more RAM to the same 64-bit Intel server? Any Linux OS changes required to get all RAM recognised by OS ?

A recommendation does not mean the absolute best solution for every situation. There has been no information about any particular software deployment or even the particular CPU in question.
I agree with you that enabling or disabling HTT in regard to achieving the best possible performance for a particular scenario is subject to testing. But, if someone asks me what is the recommendation about HTT in regard to Oracle UEK kernel, and possibly Oracle RDBMS, my suggestion is to use the default and leave HTT enabled. I'm not aware of any documentation that suggest to generally disable HTT when using Oracle. Saying "it depends" is scientifically correct, but not helpful.
There are already plenty of discussions about HTT on the net. You can turn HTT off and experience a performance increase, but there is also a chance the performance was even better with HTT enabled in a properly configured system or application. There are cases were HTT apparently slows down performance, but drawing a conclusion about enabling or disabling HTT in regard to performance is often too simple due to many other factors that can interfere with the results.

Is there a huge different between the 13 and 15 inch?

I notice the 13 inch has the intel 2.66 GHz core 2 duo, and the 15 inch has the 2.4 GHz intel core i5. Is the 15 inch's performance worth the extra $300? or is it just a better screen? I cant quite afford to go for the 2.66GHz intel core i5 in the 15 inch. I dont do a lot of heavy lifting, some photoshop and illustrator work. Nothing real real taxing though. just in the market for a new machine.
So i guess my questions is, screen size aside, which would give me better performance the 13" 2.66 GHz core 2 duo or the 15" 2.4 GHz intel core i5.

The Core i5 is more state of the art.
Independent of the processor, the best bang for your buck is RAM. This will make a huge difference in performance. Factor that expense into your decision making for maxing out your ram after you make the purchase. In other words you will notice a bigger difference with the low end pro with max RAM. Compared to the high end pro with factory minimum ram.
Buy third party RAM and install it yourself.

Well good news, I received a bunch of BIOS'ses from MSI that have Hyper-V enabled.
The BIOS are released here as Hyper-V doesn't work for every CPU even if it does have it.
If it works it work, if it doesn't you are out of luck.

Have fun with them, but beware, they are for use at your own risk!! Nor do we know if they will have new versions in the future.
