Is iBook G4 Mac OS 10.4 compatible with Mac OS 10.5?

I have recently purchased second hand iBook G4 with the operating system 10.4. All files have been removed by its previous user the only thing is every time I put the machine on it asks for his ID and password. So I thought that I could get rid off this annoying thing by running the install disc. But I don't have the version 10.4. However I also have Mac machine at home with 10.5 operating system. So the question is: can I use 10.5 install disc on the iBook G4 that originally had the version 10.4?
Thanks for your help

These are the minimum system requiremnts for running 10.5
Processor must be any Intel, PowerPC G5 or G4 (867 MHz and faster)
DVD drive (for installation of the operating system)
At least 512 MB of RAM (additional RAM (1 GB) is recommended for development purposes)
At least 9 GB of disk space available.
However 10.5 may be slow on your G4 if the CPU is less than 1 GigHz and if RAM is less than 1 GB.
But you could probably run 10.5 on it.
Is the problem with the existing 10.4 is that you cannot log in, because you don't know the username and password and don't have the 10.4 install disk to change it? You can get around this if necessary.

  • Is 250GB External USB Hard Drive compatible with Mac OSX on an iBook G4?

    Hello,
I just bought a Toshiba 250GB External Usb Hard Drive because the seller recommended it to telling me that it works in my computer iBook G4 Mac OSX.
I prepared it and I see it on my desktop with a folder named System Volume Information and 2.32 GB available.
I tried to copy a file and I received a message telling that the disc can't be modified.
Where can I find the instructions to initialize it if it is compatible?
    Thanks in advance,
    Joan

I have a feeling this is a similar problem to my 400GB Usb2 drive. I reformatted it to the default Mac format in Disk Utility and it mounted!! Try this

  • I had an old version on my iBook G4 Mac 10.39 and I tried to upload and now lost everything. How can I get my bookmarks and firefox back?

Firefox was working just fine on my 2004 ibook G4 computer with a Mac 10.39 browser. Then, I got an email message that I needed to upgrade my browser in order to see the new Yahoo email. So I clicked on the link and it took me Firefox 4. I downloaded it and then it asked if I wanted to replace my old Firefox and I said 'Yes". BIG mistake because when I tried to open firefox 4 - I got the error message: Firefox won't open because it is incomplete or damaged. Then, I couldn't get my old firefox back and I lost all of my hundreds of bookmarks. Please advise and help me! I have been searching for hours for an old version of Firefox to download that is compatible with my iBook and to no avail. Please tell me where to go to download a new Firefox please.

Firefox 2.0.0.20 is the last ever release for Mac OSX 10.3.9 and earlier versions. <br />

  • Old Composite Video cable (Tangerine iBook) not compatible with Video iPod

    I discovered a little surprise.
Despite being exactly identical on both ends of the cable, an old Apple Composite Video cable, originally purchased for a Tangerine iBook, is not compatible with Video iPod.
Anybody confirms such situation, or is it just my Video iPod with a faulty video output?

The cable may look the same but it's wired differently. Please see this for more info :

  • IBook and Mac mini

Hello users... I'd like to know if anyone has helpful information as to whether my iBook G4 can or will Communicate BETTER with my mac mini? I know that they are totally different operating systems but my iBook is perfectly fine and works great, plus I do not want to spend more money on a new laptop for travel or out and about. The updates that I install when the update messages show up, I assume are for the intel operating system, yes? I'll take what information you can share from you pros.
    Thank you,
    Ronald

Updates should not appear for the Intel operating system in Software Update.
The only update you really need to apply, and that's if the rest of your PowerPC applications are compatible with it are either 10.4.11, or 10.5.8.
10.4.11 combo PowerPC is free to 10.4.1 users. 10.5.8 you'd have to shop around and find 10.5. installer DVD first, and then apply the 10.5.8 combo update. Apple no longer sells the 10.5 installer disc. See my FAQ* on upgrading:

  • Is there any flashplayer that is compatible with an ibook G4

I am wondering if anyone knows of a flashplayer that is compatible with an ibook

The last version that works with PowerPC Macs (such as an iBook G4) running Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) or later is Flash Player 10.1 (specifically 10.1.102.64).  I have it on my Power Mac G5.
    You can find it here
         http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/archived-flash-player-versions.html
in a download of "archived" Flash Player versions
On that web page, look down the list of downloads.  The one you want is
         (Released 11/04/2010)  Flash Player 10.1.102.64 and 9.0.289.0 (126 MB)
    Within this download, find
         Flash Player 10.1.102.64
              10_1r102_64
                   flashplayer10_1r102_64_ub_mac.dmg
That should be the installer you need.
Note:  Performance may not be satisfactory, if playing Flash-based "HD" videos.

  • I'm new...Is the iBook compatible with IBM?

So I might be getting a new job and they asked me if my computer is IBM compatible. I am not sure. I think they need to know if it will be compatible with a hand-held device such as a palm pilot type thing. I'm new to the world of Apple so I have no idea and I don't even know where to look.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
IBM compatible is another way of asking "windows compatible". Macs are very adaptable, usually not having a problem interfacing with various external devices including handhelds etc. Sometimes, a mfg. states that a device is "windows only compatible", when in truth they usually interface seamlessly with OS X.
Most palm pilot devices, especially recent ones, are OS X compatible. Have a look at their support page for specifics.
Also, I encourage you to become more familiar with your Apple iBook. You'll find the computer operating system is very intuitive. As for resources, besides these forums Apple's Knowledge Base, via their web site, is very helpful. Also, go to a national bookstore chain and have a look in the computer section at the OS X manuals. There are a number of very useful ones, well written and illustrated, to get you up to speed with OS X and Apple's iLife software package. I suggest selecting the one that best works with your level of understanding, i.e. makes sense to your brain.
    Good Luck

  • Is there an agenda app compatible with Mac, iPhone

I'm looking for an app to use as my agenda/planner but that compatible with my MacBook Air, iPhone 4 &amp; iPad 2 and that it's able to update via iCloud, is there such an app?

There isn't a iBooks application for Mac yet. However, Apple showed a preview of iBooks for Mac at the WWDC with OS X Mavericks, that will be released in fall, so you can be sure that iBooks for Mac will be launched

  • Ibook 500mhz AV cable its compatible with the iPod AV cable?

Last Sunday i've found an old cable from my old ibook 500mhz: http://www.mac-pro.com/s.nl/sc.2/category.114/it.A/id.1383/.f
Do you think it will be compatible with the ipod video that im waiting? (yes, because im from portugal and need to wait a lot for all the new mac products...)
the jeck 3.5 connection seems very similar.
    Thanks a lot.

No the jack is wired differently :
    http://www.tuaw.com/2005/11/01/how-to-convert-an-ibook-av-cable-to-an-ipod-av-ca ble/
If you are prepared to cannibalise the cable you can get it to work but it's not as tidy as the Apple supplied cable.
Generic A/V cables may work if you get the RCAs in the right place, e.g. cables suitable for Sony camcorders work if you swap the Video (Yellow) and Right Audio (Red).
I think that's what the previous poster was referring to.

  • Firefox prompted me to download an incompatible update that its website claims is compatible with my operating system (Mac OS 10.4.11). Why prompt an incompatible download AND claim it is compatible?

I have an iMac and use OS 10.4.11 & Firefox 3.6.19. Firefox prompted me to download an update (to 7.0.1). I looked up the system requirements on your website, and it stated the update is compatible with OS 10.4.11. But after I downloaded and installed the update, it failed to work on grounds of incompatibility. Hence 2 questions: (1) Why did Firefox prompt me to download an incompatible update? (2) Why did your website claim the update is compatible with my operating system when it is not?

Sorry, it's because Firefox 4+ are only compiled for the Intel processors.
There is a separate project for PPC Macs called Ten Four Fox. You might give it a spin when you're tired of 3.6.

  • Is Office 2008 for Mac more compatible with PC's ?

    Hi,
I currently have iWork 09. Sometimes, I save my documents to a .doc format for instance, but when I re-open it, I always have error messages saying that this thing or that thing has been modified to fit the current format etc...
    If I use office 2008, will it be a 100% compatible with PC's ?
    Sincerely.

Yes, Office for Mac should be fully compatible with Office on Windows.
The reason errors are popping up on your iWork documents may be because you are using things that aren't supported in Word (such as image reflections, or different fonts).

  • Is Apple video adapter compatible with my 12 inch ibook G4?

    HI.
Sorry if i'm repeating an old topic, but I can't seem to find this specific question in any of them. i was reading on the apple website that the video adapter M9109G/A (Model no) Is only compatible with ibook's without the external reset button? What exactly do they mean by external reset button? Mine has a reset/startup button on the right, just above the keyboard. Is that what they are referring to?
Anyway, I'm sure someone here can help me out.
    Thanks
    Steve

You are talking about the power button on your iBook G4. You can see a couple examples of reset buttons in KB 14449, Resetting PowerBook and iBook Power Management Unit (PMU).
The M9109G/A is the correct cable for your iBook.

  • I have a mac osx version 10.6.8 no windows and i am trying to install a program but keep getting can not run in dos mode  ( the disk says on back works on intel mac with parallels or vm fusion) is this program not compatible with my mac?

i have a mac osx version 10.6.8 no windows installed and i am trying to install a program but keep getting can not run in dos mode  ( the disk says on back works on intel mac with parallels or vm fusion) is this program not compatible with my mac?

You run Windows in Parallels or Fusion. Then in Windows you install the program.

  • Time Capsule 1TB Will this unit still be compatible with Lion OSX ,As I have not switched yet until other programs I have installed on my mac are up to speed

I have had my eye on one of these for quite some time in the past and up until just very recently have puchased a 1TB Time Capsule at rather quite a reasonable price or so I had thought compared to what they had been priced at originally in the past which I had thought to be a bit over the top as is with most of apple's products or should I more say marketing tactic's,
Anyway I was just wanting to know in general is this unit already so to speak on it's way out or becoming obsolete in comparison to the 2TB's and 3TBs Time Capsules ,
Not the implicating the obvious being storage in differences but more so the compatibility issue side of things,
In short will this unit still work with OSX Lion for example, or is it only limited to Leopard and Snowleopard,
The place I had purchased this unit from are more or less in the dark themselves and although more than helpful are more a musical instrument outlet than a computer store as the decision was my choice alone in which I need not to be convinced,
Although I have purchased this item I am yet to recieve as this unit was the one of the last in the country and is to be shipped in from out of town,
But has given me time to think of such in the process during as this unit is no longer advertised amongst it bigger companions,
I use my mac or mac's mainly for composing music with such software as Pro Tools 8 soon to be 9 and also Live 8 Studio as I don't plan to plan to change over to Lion OSX until these programs are up to speed and speaking the same language,

    Yes, it's compatible with Lion.

  • HT1199 My mac has OSX version 10.8.2 and I'm try to install an aiport express base station which requires 10.5.7 or later. Yet when I try to install the software it says the base station is not compatible with my mac version - how do I resolve?

My mac has OSX version 10.8.2 and I'm try to install an aiport express base station which requires 10.5.7 or later. Yet when I try to install the software it says the base station is not compatible with my mac version - how do I resolve?

You already have the software installed that you need if you have 10.8.2.
If AirPort Utility cannot find the Express, that is another matter. More software is not needed. More troublehooting is needed.
Power up the Express for a full minute
Hold in the reset button on the Express for 7-8 seconds and release
Allow a full minute for the Express to restart
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen
Look for a heading of New AirPort Base Station
Just below that, click on AirPort Express
    What happens?

  • I have a mac osx 10.4 and all the new versions of fire fox are not compatible with my computer, how can upgarade so I can get to my gmail account, etc?

I can't access my email on firefox , it states that I am using an old version of firefox that is no longer compatible with gmail, however when I try to upgrade to a newer version I get a window that says that my computer is not compatible with the new version. Is there one that is??

Current Firefox versions require a Mac with an Intel processor and OS X 10.6 (Firefox 16 runs on Intel Mac OS X 10.5).

For an unofficial Firefox 17.0.10 ESR compatible version that runs on a PowerPC Mac with OS X 10.4.11 or OS X 10.5.8 you can look at TenFourFox.
