Is ical "sharing" always read-only?

I assist an MIT professor who uses the ical software, and I use Windows XP. I need the ability to edit his calendar by "suggesting" a meeting that he can either accept or reject and that is clearly "from" me. Is this possible? If it is, how does the software deal with issues of synchronizing--i.e., if I suggest a mtng on a calendar that hasn't yet been synced up with his Palm that day, will his calendar automatically catch new conflicts when it is synced?
I read the thread posted about users sharing a synced calendar, and it doesn't sound promising. Any new ideas much appreciated.
Thanks,
Isadora

The answer to your basic question is that an iCal that is published by its originator is always read only to those viewing it - either on the web or as a subscription in iCal.
If you use Outlook, you could try making your suggestions in the form of meeting requests (perhaps in a dedicated calendar on your 'side'?)
There's an explanation about what happens at the iCal end here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iCal/2.0/en/wr41.html
I can't be much more precise because I don't have the Windows equipment to verify how well this works.

    Hi,
If you haven't already, it might be worth trying deleting the preferences.
Close iCal and go to your user Library/Preferences and delete these files:

  • Fat32 Shared from Mac - Folders Always Read Only?

I have a Mac Book Pro running 10.5.8 with a FAT32 Bootcamp Partition. I set up Windows Sharing so a computer running WIndows Vista can share this FAT32 volume on my Mac. The basic networking works fine, and I can open, edit and save C files in the Microsoft Visual C++ environment I'm using.
But, the compiler attempts to create temporary files during compilation and this fails. It complains that the folder is write protected. This is substantiated by the fact that when I show the folder properties for the folder in question, it shows "Read Only" in the "Attributes" section.
Thing is, using Notepad, I can create a new file and save it on these "read-only" folders without any errors.
So I'm mystified. Any thoughts on why the compiler wouldn't be able to create the temporary files?
    Looking forward to a solution,
    Mark

I am posting back here because I discovered the cause of the second problem mentioned in the above post. IE: the problem of misbehaving folders in windows.
First, some background. The folder structure is rather large and complex, so I created it using applescript and a text file with outline levels. Unfortunately, some of the outline titles (which became folder titles) ended in a space.
Apparently windows does not like folders (files too?) to end with a space. While this never affected my Mac, when I transfered the data and structure to the PC it went haywire. I did notice that the duplicate folders were not identical as I first thought, but rather were generated without the trailing space(s). Now it is just a matter of removing all the trailing spaces and it appears that windows can handle the folders.
However, every folder I put on the PC still says it is read only and I can't seem to change that. Any help?

  • Shared folder read-only for other users

We setup a new iMac with three accounts for members of the family. Two have admin rights. We installed Quicken Essentials 2010 for Mac, and put the Quicken data file in the Users/Shared/Quicken folder. Everything worked great for user #1 who copied the file to the shared Quicken folder.
User #2 (also an admin) was not able to open Quicken, as an error stating the file was read-only. I checked permissions, and set user1 and user2 with read/write and everyone with read/write. Basically, all permissions on that data file are read/write for everyone.
That still did not work. Then, I set user2 as the owner. Now, user2 can use Quicken and the file, but user1 cannot. Same error.
How do we get it so that files in the Shared folder are really shared and accessible to everyone?

The solution that I discovered to work: Place your quicken data file(s) on an external drive (or create a partition if you only have access to a single hard drive) and have permissions on that drive (o volume) set to "ignore ownership on this volume" It works for me. Both accounts can now access my single quicken data file. To set the permissions on a drive/volume, select the drive or volume, choose "get info" from the file menu and at the bottom of the get info window mark the box "Ignore ownership on this volume".

  • Always "Read-only" in dimension detailed view, OWB10gR2

In OWB10gR2, let's get any dimension open in the "Data Object Editor", then click on dimension object, right button menu and select "Detail View". The editor shows as expected, the dimension itself and the underlying table, however in the lower pane where we can select tabs(Storage, Attributes, Levels, etc.) it always says "Read-only". Why is that? According to my security settings, I do have full control over these objects.
Can anyone explain this to me?
    Thanks,
    vr

Everyone, the "detail view" is read only becuase you aren't allowed to change settings here. If you notice, there should be a set of tabs at the top that say "relational", "dimensional", "business definition", and something else for the detail view (can't remember now). It appears that you can only change settings when on the "dimensional" tab - so just click there and you'll be good to go.
    Hope this helps,

  • View sharing in read only mode

    Hi,
I have made an application in which I made two local development projects. Through that I am using views of one into another with the help of "Used WebDynpro Components" concept. After deploying, I have got these two views.
But the problem is that I want that view in read only mode which I have taken from other local development project.
Please provide me the code for the same.

  • How to set a shared calendar 'read only' for SOME users in ML server

I am setting up Mountain Lion Server and wish to set up a series of calendars to be used by a studio of approx 20 people - two calendars will show the kind of thing I'm trying to achieve.
Calendar A shows appointments and meetings - it can be viewd and edited by all
Calendar B shows who is taking leave and when - it can be viewed by all, but edited by only a small group of people
What is the best way to set this up? On The earlier version of the server we had set up calendars on the server and delegated - this is not possible on Mountain Lion Server.

I don't think you can do this strictly by personalization since you need to use SPEL, unless the attribute you will be using for the display to control readonly is already present in the VO. Basically you need to check a value, say Supplier, and have another attribute say readOnly, tthat is set to TRUE if the supplier equals your desired supplier and FALSE for all other suppliers.

  • SMB connection is read only

I have tried several different ways to connect to a windows network drive using SMB and CIFS, using the sharename and the IP address.  I get the drive to appear on my computer, but it is always Read Only.  I can connect to the same drive using a VMWare View Client, but I want to connect through the mac side.  I have tried a few things in terminal, but can't get that to work either.  I have searched around the web, but haven't been able to find the answer.

    Maybe these will help:

  • Read only item populated by dynamic LOV

Since I'm using artificial keys in most of my table FKs, I need to use a lot of LOVs to provide the user with discernible data.
Many of the columns I use an LOV for I need to be read only items. However, whenever I use a dynamic LOV, I do not see how to make it read only. It sets the value of the item to [].
I know this can be accomplished in some cases with a join in the underlying query. However, many of the pages where I need to make this change are not based on a query.
Is there a way to make an item populated by an LOV read only while still retaining the value?
    Thanks for your help!
    -Reid

I'm using apex 3.2.1. Your testing and replies have helped me realize that the problem is that the column indeed did not have a value. When I had the item "display as" set to "select list" the LOV was also setup for allow NULL=NO. Thus, it was showing some value in the LOV in that item. But, when I switched to the "display as text" and set the always read only, then it gave the double brackets []. When I changed the allow NULL=YES, it worked fine and gave me a blank value.
    Thanks again!

  • Automator plug-in added to read-only calendar in iCal

I was trying the 'Tiger Tip of the Week' about creating an Automator workflow saved as an iCal Alarm plug-in. Unfortunately, it added it to the 'Holidays' calendar, which is read-only. I found where the plug-in was saved in my library and deleted it, but the 'Boston Globe' event was still on my calendar. Luckily, I was able to unsubscribe and re-subscribe to the US Holidays shared calendar and make it disappear, but what did I do wrong? I didn't have any options available when saving as a plug-in.

One way I've gotten around some weird problems like this in the past is to export my calendars to the Desktop, and then re-import them back into iCal. I'm not sure if this will work for you, however. You also might try backing up and restoring via File->Back up iCal... . Hope that helps.
Edit: if the problem is related to a calendar you've published, Apple offers these suggestions (from iCal Help):
    ■ If you want to change events on a calendar that you published on the Internet, but you’ve deleted the calendar from your Calendars list, you need to re-create the calendar with all its events, give it the same name as the published calendar, and then publish the new calendar. The new calendar will replace the previously published one.
    ■ If you can’t change an event for which you are the organizer, or you can’t change the attendee settings for an event you’ve been invited to, make sure all your email addresses are listed on your Address Book card (the card marked “me”).

  • Airport Extreme - Iomega Minimax 2tb File Sharing set as read only

    HI,
I am using an Airport Extreme as home router and to share files in my wireless lan an Usb Iomega Minimax hard disk (not for Time Machine). I am having some issues with file sharing.  My problem is that after using for a while, if I left it without activity for a couple of minutes then I can't write anything. Like if the hard disk put itselt in read only mode or there is an issue with permissions (Snow Leopard or Airport Extreme Itself). I try to Disconnect / Connect several times, but with no positive results. If I reboot the airport all back to normal operation.
The error message when I try to copy using an iMac (8.1) is:
The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50).
I can delete any file or browse and view photos or any file.  All that I described were using Airport Extreme Firmware 7.5.2. I downgraded to 7.4.2 firmaware and having the same issue as results.
I have in home, the iMac,  3 PC's with Win Xp sp3, and one notebook with win 7 starter edition more, and I am having problems too. I was reading in the communities archive, I understand that exist some problem with file sharing, Any idea? I must to put the airport with 7.5.2. It's a dual band A1301, I think is the 1st generation router, not the latest.
    Thanks in advance.
    Marcos

    [SOLVED]
I changed the Iomega Minimax disk, and put a Lacie Quadra D2 500gb that i have, and force it with the switch [off-auto - on]  to always ON mode. The iomega minimax have a switch with ON - OFF position, the auto sleep mode cannot be disabled. The airdisk function perfect now. I can read, write, when I need.
The problem for me wa with Airport Extreme and the internal mount/umount command when disk's  goes to sleep.

Generally when creating a Word file from either a Mac or Win7 pc and opening it on two different machines (either one first) it always prompts that the file is open and will be opened as read only.
However opening a CSS file does not prompt that it is already open on or from any machine which is causing code edits to be lost.
What we found from out testing:
    - The file can be saved from one user to the server and WILL NOT PROMPT on other machines until the saving machine has the Dreamweaver program closed completely
    - The file can be closed and  Dreamweaver minimised to the launch bar but it still will not register on other machines that it has been changed.
    - Also, until the  Dreamweaver program is closed on the machines, it will continue to open it's saved version of the file.
    Example Scenario:
    - User 1 opens test.css (which is 2000 lines) and adds some code to the end of the file to bring it up to 2500 lines
    - Meanwhile User 2 opens test.css as well (opens as 2000 lines as User 1’s edits have not yet been saved) and adds in code to bring it to 2300 lines
    - User 1 saves his file and closes it - but  Dreamweaver is still open.
    - User 2 also saves his file and leaves  Dreamweaver  open.
    - The server will report the size and last edit of the file the same as User 2 as he was the last person to save it (and if you open from the Win7 Machine it will show as User 2’s 2300 line version)
    - If User 1 then open's the file again (from either the 'recent' in Dreamweaver OR clicking on the file directly in Finder...which version opens.... The version that User 1 saved! Not the true version on the server, but the version that User 1 edited and saved with 2500 lines in it.
    - Same for User 2, he will open 'his' version with 2300 lines in.
    Other information:
    - Files are opened directly from the server
    - Sometimes the users will save incrementally and re-open
    - Most of the time users will save incrementally and keep the files open
    - The users will never not save incrementally and just save when closing the file once finished
    - The users are usually working on the files all day
    - It is always the bottom lines of code that are lost. It could be a case of the two versions being mixed up and cutting off the newly added lines based on the line count (possibly).
It is as if Dreamweaver is holding a cache of the version locally and then only properly looking back to the server when it has been completely closed. It is very difficult to see how the server is causing such an impact on these files, there are very few logs which are giving any indication to the root cause of the problems.
Anyone know if this is a known issue?
Is there a way that there can be a featured implemented on the server that doesn't allow another user to open a file if it is already open on another machine?
    Thanks

Your server file handling has nothing, and really nothing to do with Adobe software. If files don't get locked for (over-)writing and/or lose connection to the program opening them, then your server is misconfigured. It's as plain and simple and that. Anything from "known file types"/ file associations not being set correctly, MIME types being botched, crooked user privileges and file permissions, missing Mac server extensions, delayed file writing on the server, generic network timeout issues and what have you. Either way, you have written a longwinded post with no real value since you haven't bothered to provide any proper technical info, most notably about the alleged server. Either way, the only way you can "fix" it is by straightening out your server and network configuration, not some magic switch in Adobe's software.

  • How do i shut off the read-only mode in iCal?

I don't what happened but suddenly I cannot add any new entries to my iCal. I get a error prompt that says, "READ-ONLY CALENDAR - You cannot change events or To Do in a read-only calendar." How do I disable this read-only feature so I can use my iCal again. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hyun, I suspect you just need to select another calendar in the panel on the left (eg Home). Subscribed to, and iCal Birthday calendars are read-only.

  • Read-only access when saving metadata to file from Adobe Lightroom on a MAC OS to Windows shared drive

We have a group of 5 people editing and indexing photos to a shared drive on a windows server, everyone has its own catalog and working on different folders to avoid any locking conflicts.
The windows computers don't have any problems but the Mac's don't write the updated metadata to all files because they get the message "Photos have read-only access".
    The environment is the following:
    2x Macs workstations running:
    - Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.7.1
    - iMAC with MAC OS X Yosemite 10.10.2
    3x Windows Workstations:
    - Windows 7
    - Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.7.1
    Server:
    - Shared drive on a Windows Server 2012 Standard
I have searched the internet, no one has this problem with this exact setup but I have tried all the solutions I found, namely:
    1. Connect to the network drive with cifs:// protocol
    2. Change the settings of the nsmb.conf for 'smb1_only' protocol
    3. Mount the drive manually by command line
    Nothing worked, any ideas?

Did you ever find a solution to this problem?  I have the same issue and wonder if Lightroom 6 will resolve it.  I  tried AFP, SMB2, SMB3 and they all failed to save metadata randomly. When I use NFS from OS X then it works fine but it's a little slower than SMB and it's not as native as the mount via AFP or SMB, so it's harder to maintain.     My server is a FreeNAS 9.2 (FreeBSD) which is running Samba, Netatalk and native NFS.

  • Server 2003: make user template with read-only access for shared folders

I have need to make a type of user (like Administrator, Power User, Mobile User, User, etc.) that has read-only acess to shared folders. So when I make a new user and assign the "read-only user" template I wish to have, the user can open files
in the shared folders on the server, but not edit, save or delete files. Other users can and should remain able to edit, save & delete.
Before I dig in, is this even possible?

You could create a Group called ReadOnly, and set that to have Read on the ACLs of the relevant files or folders.
Make that template user a member of that group.
As long as they are not also a member of another group that gives them higher permissions, this would work.
Otherwise set the ReadOnly group to deny Write, which would over ride any other permission set.
    So,
    Folder A
    ACL:
    ReadOnly : R
    Users: Read/Write
If a user is a member of Users & ReadOnly, they would get read/write to Folder A. As permissions are cumulative.
    If you did the following:
    Folder A
    ACL:
    ReadOnly : R
    ReadOnly: Deny Write
    Users: Read/Write
The users in ReadOnly would be denied write, as it overrides the cumulative permissions.
