Is iChat in Tiger compatible with iChat in Jaguar?

A buddy and I want to set up ichat. We both have .mac accounts, he uses Jaguar OS and I use Tiger. We both put our .mac address in the buddy list but can't seem to get a connection. Another friend has a Macbook pro and a .mac account. We had no problems. Is there an inherent problem here between Rendevous/bonjour and/or Jaguar/Tiger or have we missed something???? Any help appreciated.
Jeff

Hi el beagle amable,
iChat 1.x in Jaguar should be able to text chat to iChat 3
It was possible to buy a version of iChat for Jaguar at one point and again there should be no problem with this.
Is he able to Log on to AIM at all ?

  • Cameras compatible with iChat?

I have many friends who use AIM on Windows computers, whereas I use iChat with my AIM on my Mac. I've tried starting video chats with them, but I haven't been able to have a video chat with anyone but my friends who have mac computers and use iChat.
One of my Windows-using friends wants to buy a camera for their computer, but we want to make sure it will be compatible with my iChat so we can have video chats. Any recommendations as to what would work best?

Their Should be no problem with camera compatibility it is merely a video feed coming in to iChat that has been correctly converted. How ever I have no knowledge on AIM. I would try a Google Jabber account. Try this http://www.google.com/talk/otherclients.html it works on a lot of platforms and has good video quality. Best of Luck.

  • Wireless camera compatible with iChat

Does anyone know of a wireless webcam that works with iChat?
I found a bluetooth one but that has limited range of 10 to 30 feet. It would be nice to have longer range. Would that need to be a wifi webcam? All the ones I find seem to only be used in the context of a web browser rather than an application like iChat.
    thanks

    Hi,
This is the site we normally point people towards
    http://www.mac-compatible-web-cam.com/ (don't allow the redirect)
It tends to list a history of older Cameras down the left with Amazon links to second hand ones.
I did not see any WiFi ones listed there though and only one Bluetooth one.
As the default for a Camera nowadays is essentially a UVC (USB Video Class) compatible camera and these work in Vista upwards and 10.4.9 upwards for Macs the redirect site is here http://www.uvccompatiblewebcams.com/
I did a Google Search for Wifi WebCams
This one for instance would work over your WiFi Network.
The Tech Specs say Windows only though and the output is not a format iChat can "see".
iChat can interpret DV signals from Firewire device (Camera or DV converter).
It can since 10.4.9 "see"/use UVC cameras.
Pre Snow Leopard older (USB 1.1) Cameras that had Specific Mac Drivers (Or worked with third party Drivers) could be got into iChat with iUSBCam (No longer supported in Snow Leopard).
A web browser is going to use Quicktime to access any Video it "sees".
Although iChat does use Quicktime it is limited to the formats I have mentioned above.
This Article from 2004 uses a second Mac with a Firewire external iSight back to a central point and then Evocam and Security Spy to upload pics to a server/Web site.
This one "sort of" imported Video on one iChat computer and streamed that to another when cetain conditions were met (used Status Messages like iTune Remote does).
CamcamX may provide you with a means of getting other Video into iChat.
A Bluetooth Hub may be another options.
Basically I think you will find it difficult to find a Wifi Camera that can get Video into iChat.
The same may be true of Blue Tooth ones as well. Although this one does advertise it will work with iChat.
There are ways of "Converting" video using third party apps that may get the Incoming Video into iChat.

  • Linux chat clients compatible with iChat Audio

I have a friend who has Linux. What Linux clients are there that he can use so we can do audio chats, with me using iChat, of course?

Their Should be no problem with camera compatibility it is merely a video feed coming in to iChat that has been correctly converted. How ever I have no knowledge on AIM. • Is Tiger compatible with Syst 9 for Bigpond Cable!?

Hi I need Syst 9 running in the background for my bigpond cable apparently!? I read somewhere that Tiger is not compatible?! Is this true?

    Cec,
You stated/asked...Hi I need Syst 9 running in the background for my bigpond cable apparently!?BigPond makes no such claims on What are the Cable system requirements?
According to that page OS 9 is not, nor would I expect it to be a requirement for a cable connection.
By the way, Tiger does support OS 9, which is known as Classic. Mac OS X provides a compatibility layer called Classic that runs a complete Mac OS 9 installation within OS X for applications and hardware that require OS 9.
I have lost track of which computers can start (Dual Boot) using classic, your machine may or may not be able to start up in Classic.

  • Is Tiger compatible with MS Office v.X?

    Hi
Preparing to upgrade to Tiger from Panther. Will I still be able to use Microsoft's Office v.X without glitches?
    My thanks,
    TF

    TF,
I can agree about the wondering if cron scripts was done on a regular basis. I have Mac Janitor on my iMac and Onyx on my iBook, due to the differences operating systems.
Impressed with Tiger? Oh my goodness YES. I'm pondering whether to upgrade these two or go for a newer Mac. I'm spending entirely to much time on my wife's Mini.
As far as antivirus I'm running Norton. It actually caught a virus on the iBook, (V.9.0),the animation was cool. Must have been a Windows virus, I know...don't want to get the replies of no known viruses on a Mac. No antivirus is on the Mini yet. Soon to be addressed.
I have read on numerous posts of unhappy experiences with Norton Disk Utilities...It may be worth a new post to see what the majority is using for an antivirus and their experiences.
As always Happy to help when I can.
    Lee
    Klaus,
I just checked with my wife. All is well here. I'm sorry I can't offer much insight. I have, however, read that others have had problems in their font folder. May be related??? I'd recommend another post since this one has been indicated as answered.
    Good luck,
    Lee

  • OS X 10.4 Tiger compatible with PBG4 1.25GHz?

    Hi-
I am considering buying Mac OS X 10.4 so I can use the iPod touch on my PowerBook G4 (1.25GHZ, 512MB). Is this machine supported by OS X? Would it be wiser to upgrade to a new Mac, if performance is compromised too much? My fear is just that an updated OS X will bog down my system (I currently run 10.3.9 trouble-free and have been for the past couple of years). It will be 5 years since I bought my PB in mid-January.
    Thanks!
    -Daniel

As BDAqua noted, your powerbook will be just fine running Tiger, and could use more memory if you go that route.
IF you can afford a new laptop and you do a lot of graphic/photo editing, video editing, or other CPU and memory hungry tasks on a regular basis you should see a big difference if you get a new laptop (or desktop). If you do word processing, email, web surfing, etc... then an upgrade to 10.4 would be a more reasonable approach.
BD = thanks for the info on calling Apple for 10.4. I didn't realize they were still selling it.

Appropriate for using iChatAV 2 upwards. Edits have been made for iChat 4
    Glossary for this FAQ
Routers: Any configurable device that sits between your computer and the internet link you have. This includes Modems that Route as well as "routers"
Routers seem to fall into two categories
Those that work straight from the box. See Apple Article HT1787
NOTE :This Article has not been updated in content since Jan 04 Only being changed to an Article from the Previous Doc listing
Even then some list that they need tweaks.
    and those that do not.
This post will deal with what you may need to look at.
First off make sure your device is acting as a DHCP server. (if you are already on the internet you may not have to bother with this.)
Check in the Tiger System Preferences > Network Preference Pane, in the "Built in Ethernet" option from the "Show" drop down list.
In Leopard the Networks are listed on the left with icons. The Airport Option will need you to access the Advance Button for the Next bit.
Make sure the TCP/IP tab is the 'front' one. You should be able to see Configure IPv4 and it most likely reads Using DCHP. Make a note of your IP address. It will start 10.xxx.xxx.xxx or 192.168.xxx.xxx (the 'x' s will stand for any number between 1 and 255). The range 172.16.xxx.xxx is also a possible value at this point. Rarely used, but it is part of the RFC for Address Allocation for Private Internets.
Your router is most likely to be configurable from your browser. You will need to find the IP address to type into the browser from any Readme or PDF files that came on the install disk or visit the makers website and download a manual.
The Port Forward.com site lists many devices and clicking on one will take you to a list of Applications. This iChat will open an page that will start by telling you the defaults to access the device
Opening or Allowing ports. Several Methods not all devices have all of them.
    DMZ (Demilitarised Zone)
This is a less secure setting that basically opens all ports and points the incoming data to your computer. (not helpful if you have more than one computer on your LAN). It can be considered as an extreme form of Port Forwarding
Port Forwarding (also Virtual Server or Pin Holes)
These settings are usually found in an Advanced setting.
You may need to set an incoming IP address (Usually 0.0.0.0 to any outside server), a port that data will arrive on, the Inside computer's IP address (your computer) and the port it will deal with the data on and the protocol it will use.
See this pic for an example of the description above.
In this example shows that on some Port AND Protocols need to be listed.
iChat uses TCP and UDP so some devices will need the ports listed one by one and some settings done twice, once for each protocol. The example above has a "Both" setting
See Apple Article HT1507 Previously Doc 93208 for more information. This is the Tiger iChat 3 list. The same ports are needed for Leopard except for these changes
    My Note 2:
On the first link Note 1 under tables in that link would be better if it read:
" 1. All iChat AV traffic is UDP -
    except for ports 5190 and 5298, which need to be open for both TCP as well;
and 5220, 5222, which need to be open for TCP only. "
    Note 2
GoggleTalk needs port 5223 on TCP. Also note the Server name for iChat 3 set ups
    UPnP Universal Plug n Play.
This is a simple Plug and Play type of setting. iChat can find it's own way through a router if the device has this capability.
By Not doing Port Forwarding, Triggering or DMZ and enabling UPnP the application is allowed to control the modem and the ports that are open.
They close after the application has finished with them on a timed basis.
On some devices the number of "hops" (how far away the UPnP can be "seen") can be reduced from a default of 4)
    Trigger Ports
Some devices offer a security measure that works by a first or trigger port receiving a data packet and then opening further ports when accepted.
The first port for incoming Video or Audio invites is port 5678.
    Pre iChat 4
When you click on the invite window the process moves in to port 5060 (so these will need to be opened by the trigger port) for negotiating the final group of ports from the group of 20 (16384-16403 These will need to open when the trigger says so as well). Therefore port 5678 triggers ports 5678, 5060, 16384-16403. All on UDP. Port 5190 neeeds to trigger port 5190 for both TCP and UDP.
See this variation where only the ports listed above are completed.
The other single ports need to be set one by one in addition. (5220,5222, 5223 5297, 5298, 5353)Replace
    iChat 4
The port used in IChat 4 is port 16402 instead of port 5060. The group of 20 ports is reduced to 10 (16393-16402). This is because all the In and Out Audio and Video data is on one port. Other that than the settings are the same.
At this time there is no Info on the ports the Screen Sharing in iChat 4 uses.
    Wireless
Here you will have to read around but this Apple Article TA25949 Previously Doc 58514 might be a good starting place.
Essentially whether you are wireless or Ethernet to your routing device makes very little difference to the way you do things.
Your computer will get two IPs from a DHCP server if you are connected by both methods. (iChat does not like this)
    Multiple devices
Make sure only one is acting as a DHCP server. Make sure wireless devices are bridged properly.

  • Video ichat no longer working with a new ISP

Hiya, I have read pages and pages of these posts and I am still none the wiser. I used to be able to video ichat with my old ISP but I can't with my new one. Audio and text work fine.
I have changed my quicktime streaming settings
    I have disabled my firewall
I have gone to portforwarding.com and done the port forwarding thing (I think, I am not that technical)
I am using a fixed IP - my airport is using 192.168.7.3, my DSL router 192.168.7.1
I can ichat video fine from work (as long as it's not to my wife when she is at home)
I have tried to ichat to other people who have ichated succesfully to their friends
I have called my ISP and they assure me that no ports are being blocked
I am using the latest version of Tiger and ichat on a brand new MacBook Pro (wow this thing is fast), but my older Powerbook laptop can't connect either.
    Can anyone help?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   ichat 3.1.4

    Hi Russell,
Most of the devices listed here can be made to work with iChat
    http://portforward.com/routers.htm
However I would tend to stick to the bigger names.
AT this stage MIMO and Pre-N devices (the ones with the extra antennas and the ones trying to predict the 802.11N wireless protocol) as iChat seems to have soem problems with them.
Things like the Linksys WRT54G has routing and UPnP capabilities. The Netgear DG834G and it's variants are also popular. (D-Links seem to be a bit odd as set ups vary and they do not always have UPnP)
Thomson/Alcatel Speedtouch devices need to be on Version 4 firmware (No higher than 4.2.9) and not Version 5 or 6 (or the 4.3.x version that is really version 5 re-written for earlier devices). These Alcatels need the SIP Unbound from port 5060 that I was talking about.
See Mine in the white box just out of site http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page4.html#_text
What you have to look in to at this stage is whether the ISP is blocking port 5060 for it's own VoIP service. It it is it will not matter what modem you get.
As I said before in some cases it may be the device itself and we may be able to do soemthing about that.
http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page4.html#_text Scroll down to the White box with text in it.
    Apple have this list http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93333
These are supposed to work Out of the Box which is not the same as Can Work with iChat.

  • Problem with ichat 3.1.9 and os 10.4.11 and aim logon for a/v chats

Hello all. Please help. I have been trying to help a family member with their mac laptop, os tiger 10.4.11 and ichat 3.0. When trying to logon to start an a/v chat with anyone the program keeps defaulting to AIM. We have repeatedly deleted the "com.apple.ichat.aim.plist" file from the computer. This was done in the home/user/preferences/library folder and then in the documents folder. We have deleted all AIM accounts from the computer in iChat and all AIM associations in the keychain access. We have unchecked all boxes for the bonjour account in preferences in ichat and checked only "use this account" for the ".mac" account. We have tried changing the port to 443 from 5190 with no results. Short of reinstalling the ichat program from the installation cd, I am at a loss for what to do next. All replies helpful. Thanks.

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
Can I check a couple of things ?
    You are on 10.4.11 ?
And the iChat version reads iChat 3.0 ?
This would suggest iChat has been Reinstalled and the 10.4.11 COMBO Updater for your Processor type has not bee installed (Again)
Software Update will think this update is done and not ask for it again. However the reinstall of apps will override this and need the COMBO Installer to be downloaded and run.
With the OS at this time there were separate Intel and PCC Downloads.
    See this List
    Next.
iChat 3 can login to AIM with AIM Names, Apple IDs (@mac.com and MobileMe @Me.com names) and to various Jabber servers also in an email type name style (as in [email protected]) and can be made to login to GoogleTalk.
Previously in iChat 1 & 2, iChat Only logged in to AIM.
In the Start Up Screens which you can return to be deleting the com.apple.ichat.plist and the com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist at the same time it will offer AIM as the first choice (With @mac.com as the alternative option).
MobileME names have to be entered as if they are AIM names and entered in full as in [email protected].
iChat is therefore a Multi-service client. An AIM Login with an AIM name or an Apple ID is the first choice in entering a Screen Name in the Start Up Screen.
From there it will appear first in the list in iChat > Preferences > Accounts (And the Window Menu). In the server Settings tab it will list the AIM server as the login server (login.oscar.aol.com) whether you use an Apple ID or an AIM one.
Apple have an agreement that lets AIM (Or it's servers) query the MobileMe and @mac.com name databases to check a name is valid.
There is one drawback with this method. AIM only allow passwords up to an including 16 characters where as Apple allows longer.
They need to be shortened to 16 characters or less if they are longer at Apple.
There is NO Apple or Mac IM service.
Reinstalling iChat will not change this behaviour.
There is no option in the General Section of the Preference to Set iChat as the default app See Here in iChat 3
This has a direct effect on using Web Page Links to start Group Chat/Chatrooms.
This is changed in Firefox 3.x in the MIME settings or this Method in Internet Explorer.
Shiira and Safari cannot change this but changing in the others seems to help them as well.
    Summary.
It looks like you need a COMBO Install to bring iChat up to date with the OS based on the info posted. Links provided.
iChat is first and foremost an AIM client and Apple IDs log in to the AIM Servers.
iChat cannot be set to be the default App in iChat 3 (It can in iChat 4 and 5).
However you can use a Web Browser to change this behaviour for Web Links to Chatrooms/Group chats.
I think I have covered almost everything I can think of raised by your post but I am still unsure which of these you were really asking about.
If I have missed the point could you re-post with some different info or describe what it is you are trying to do ?

  • Issue with iChat AV 4.0

Just upgraded to Leopard and tried to have a chat with my son in Miami. I got the same error message no matter which one of us tried to initiate the chat. It timed out on his side and I got a message saying that he had ended the chat (although he had not). We're both using Intel imacs. He's using Tiger. Any help would be appreciated
Here's the text of the message:

    Hi,
Certain functions like web browsing and mail tend not to be effected by networking issues.
However in this case it would seem that as you can get on line some of the basic stuff has been brought across.
Ok in Panther and Tiger to changed or check the IP you got from your router or modem you went here
    http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/iChatPicsFolder/7System_Prefs-Network/slides/iChat_Network-PreferencePane.html
If you now click the left arrow just above the pic you will see where that went next.
Two clicks to the right arrow leads on to the next bit (as the pics are out of order).
Now you get a pane that lists the connections you could use down the left.
The Drop down for Automatic or the location is at the top on the right.
Under that you have the choice of which Network you are connected to (for Airport)
Further down is the Advanced Button.
This opens up to display what was the tabs with some things moved from other parts of the OS.
You have to set the TCP/IP stuff in here (No problem if DHCP to the Airport)
You may have to re-enter the DNS Servers (Use the Add Button for each choice you have)
In the WINS bit you can add the SMB WORKGROUP name if using other computers on your LAN (This used to be in Directory Access in the Utilities folder).
The WINS server should not be important. (nor the Proxies if you did not use them before)
Check to see if this info is the same as it was before.
    The Firewall has also moved.
    It was in Sharing
    http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/iChatPicsFolder/6iChat%20Ports/slides/1_iChat_PortsFirewall-Sharing.html
    These pics are in order
Now it is in Security on the top row of the System Preferences and is simplified to naming apps if you Restrict it but you do have to list them like Exceptions on a Windows computer.
Most likely it is the DNS server info that you need.

  • IChat is not friends with AOL anymore?

I am trying to set up an iMac G3 Indigo 500mhz with iChat. I have recently installed Tiger on it, which is running fine along with the several software pkgs. that I have put on it- Adobe CS, Office, etc.. I can not get iChat to connect to AOL. I have followed all of the the steps Apple provides several times:
    How to Start
After getting your account name start iChat. It will lead you through a assistant.
If you launched it before and are starting again make sure iChat is off line.
Go to Preferences in the iChat Menu item. Open the Acounts icon.
Select the type of account it is.
Type in your name (with the @mac.com if required an AIM one does not) and use tab key to enter password.
Server Options key should be live at this point. Check that it reads login.oscar.aol.com and the port is 5090.
Close Server Options and hit enter.
    iChat should now log on.
I know that the account works because I use it on othe computers. The error that I get when tryingo connect is this:
    Could not connect to AIM
Could not connect to AIM. Try again. The server message was Auth:DbSendError
    Any suggestions?

    HI Molly,
Welcome to the Apple Discussion Pages.
I take it you know that this Mac is too slow in noraml circu=mstance to Video chat ?
IT sounds like port 5190 is blocked somewhere.
Is this an Update from Panther ?
Was the Firewall active in Panther ?
http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/blog.html You need the table at 7th Sept for at least the AIM ports if it is.

  • Does the new AIM Triton work with Ichat?

    Hi,
Does anyone know if the new AIM Triton works with Ichat AV? I know the Beta version was not working but don't know about the new triton release.
Also, has anyone tried video/audio communication between Trillian and Ichat? Does it work? Is it better than AIM?
    Thanks,
    Stefano

I have been working with the Triton on a PC and after much research (frustration), I have found this stated on the AIM support site:
    http://www.aim.com/helpfaq/startingout/getstarted.adp?aolp=#six
Q: Is AIM Triton compatible with AIM 5.9, AOL 9.0 and iChat?
A: : AIM Triton works seamlessly with AIM 5.9, AOL 9.0 and iChat. You can send and receive instant messages with your buddies using any of these clients. Certain features may not work across all clients at this time. Voice Chat with more than two people only works with other Triton users. Video Chat will work only between two Triton users at this time.
So after reading around, I believe the 5.9 will video to the iChat 3's but I haven't had the time to try. Other posts suggest this to be true. Including many by Ralph.

  • AIM Triton - Not compatable with iChat for Audio/Video

    **From MacDailyNews** http://www.macdailynews.com
AOL's new AOL Instant Messenger 'Triton' (free for Windows 2000 and XP at http://www.aim.com/ ) update is now available. "Triton is more marketing-driven than ever, but this version's audio-chat feature shuts out one popular AIM-compatible program, Apple's iChat AV, and it doesn't allow video-conferencing with any other AIM software," Rob Pegoraro writes for The Washington Post. "More ads, less compatible: Does that sound appealing?"
"Text chats between Triton, earlier AIM releases and two third-party programs -- iChat AV, released with AOL's support, and the independently developed, open-source Gaim -- went fine. But Triton makes enough changes to voice chatting to prevent any audio exchanges with iChat AV, and its new video software doesn't work with any other AIM-compatible software," Pegoraro reports. "Fortunately, you don't have to run AIM to use the AIM network. For basic text chats and file transfers, non-AOL programs such as Gaim, Trillian and iChat provide the same utility without any of the ads."

    HI Rj,
As Triton got to it's current version as a Beta and then without any apparent changes become the item on the AIM latest page link http://www.aim.com/getaim/win/latestwin.adp I would presume it is not a fully functional item yet.
Particularly as AIM 5.9 is still available here http://www.aim.com/getaim/win/otherwin.adp?aolp=
As it is market driven hopefully it will catch up with AIM 5.9 on the connectivity front and lose or at least gain the ability to block unwanted ads.
I think we have a while to go with this one before suggesting people swap to Triton.
    Ralph

  • Feed up with iChat 3

I am sick and tried of trying to fix "faults" with iChat 3 on Tiger. It just works does not cut it any longer. I wish apple would give me the product that they sold me. I did not buy this to spend months trying work around's and still not get anywhere. Now last night it led to a fight with my wife. I cant put up with this any longer. iChat worked fine in Panther so we are going to dump Tiger and go back to Panther. I hope this fixes things with my wife.

It just works does not cut it any longer.
It works fine out of the box for many people without any special configurations or knowledge. You'll see many posts here that say it doesn't work because this is a technical discussion area where people come to ask questions, not praise the product.
I wish [A]pple would give me the product that they sold me. I did not buy this to spend months trying work around's and still not get anywhere.
Ok...you have the product. Did you want help? Did you even ask on the discussions pages with help? Under this screen name, it appears you did not or at least didn't respond back to the person (Ralph) trying to assist you.
Now last night it led to a fight with my wife. I cant put up with this any longer. iChat worked fine in Panther so we are going to dump Tiger and go back to Panther. I hope this fixes things with my wife.
Again, it's a technical discussions board.
