Is iMovie compatible w/ H.264 format?

I have a camera that says to view videos made on it my software should be compatible with H.264 format.
Further, it explains that if my software is not H.264 compatible then I have to use "VLC Media Player" to view my videos.
Can I even use iMovie with this camera?
Any ideas??

According to iMovie '09 Help (accessed from the Menu), iMovie '09 supports most commonly-used video codecs, including DV, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264, and AIC. So, your camera should be fine with iMovie '09. But, as suggested by others here, it's best to try it with iMovie before being too concerned about codecs and formats - you might be pleasantly surprised!
I found the above information in the Apple iMovie '09 Help article "+A limited number of video files may require conversion before importing+".

Video: MOV/H.264 format for iMovie

For years I have used a Sony HandyCam with digital tape, inside of a Sony underwater housing to do underwater video. Great quality and editing it in iMovie is a piece of cake. I have had no compatability issues. Trouble is hauling the housing, the tapes, etc. I am thinking about buying an Olympus TG-2 IHS which records in MOV/H.264 format. One camera to do it all.
I am concerned about editing in iMovie since this format is a compressed format versus the digital tape. Does anyone have any experience to share with this format in iMovie?

That will require conversion to a format that iMovie can use, which will give slight quality loss.

Is Mac compatible with AVCHD video format?

i'm looking for a videocam and trying to figure out for sure if Mac is simply not compatible with the AVCHD 60p format? or it can support AVCHD format but only at lower frame rates? i was looking at a Sony camcorder, and it said specifically that iMovie cannot support AVCHD 60p format. is this a hardware issue? is it a quicktime issue? is it an OS issue? (i'm on Snow Leopard 10.6.8 if Lion, or Mountain Lion now support AVCHD 60p format, please let me know). thanks

IMovie compatible conversions and metadata

I have a camera that saves in .asf format. I used Xilisoft Video converter to change the files to an iMovie compatible format but the time/date stamp changes to the conversion date. Anyway around that bc I want the original metadata. I plan to use the time/date title block for the movie and without the correct metadata it's essesntially useless. Any work arounds or idea's? Thanks for any help.

I am a teacher, relatively new iPad user. I would like to find an app that allows me to create videos that can be added to our morning announcements. The teacher in charge of announcements uses iMovie. I need an app that is user friendly, includes a pause feature so I can record in small segments AND it needs to be easy to record in iMovie compatible format OR be easy to convert. Any suggestions?

This worked for us with some modification as the version of Quicktime 10 we have doesn't have send to iMovie.
Connect Samsung video camera to laptop
Open the the “video” folder on the camera and copy videos to your desktop.
Double click on the movie to open in quicktime. Click on the box with the arrow on bottom right of the quicktime movie. Scroll down and select "send to iTunes". Select desired format (usually apple tv choice) and send to iTunes.
Open iMovie and go to FILE - IMPORT - MOVIES and browse to iTunes movies and select the correct video file from iTunes movie folder.
Once the video processes you can edit the video in iMovie ‘11

I have the same problem. I'm using Mavericks OS and latest iMovie. Both downloaded last week. I save the movie into File (as directed) and QuickTime
will not open. I'm then directed to a page of formats which are supposed to be supported on which is .mp4. Any tips?

H.264 format suddenly disappeared in my AE CS4!

first post here for me. I've been currently working on a project in AE CS4. Over the last few days, I have been able to run test renders in h.264 formats. Tonight I've finished my project and am now wanting to render out the final product. Went into Output Module, opened up the Format drop down box and suddenly realized. The Format is no longer on the list!!
Has this happened to anyone else? All I did tonight was import in an MP3 but Im not sure that would cause the problem. I don't even get an error message, it just no longer has the H.264 format!
I've tried Re-starting the app and also the comp but still no joy.
Alternatively I suppose I can try and render out a quicktime movie and changing to H.264 in the format options but it gives me the warning message to select the H.264 from the drop down....." Yes, I'm happy to do that but where did you hide it!!! " XD
any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

As shooternz said, try to reinstall QT to re-wire stolen CoDecs back to more suitable "defaults". Also uninstall any CoDec packs you may have downloaded recently. That may, however, still not do anything for Adobe CoDecs. If you have not updated AE, Encore, Premiere or AME yet, downloading the manual updaters and running them may fix things. If that doesn't go anywhere because they report everything as aready updated, then I'm afraid you will have to reinstall from scratch.

The Flashplayer does not support h264 or AAC publishing. The Flashplayer supports only h.263 (sorenson spark) video, and Nellymoser Asao and Speex audio.
If you want to publish h.264 you'll need to use Flash Media Live Encoder, or a third party encoder.

When publishing video files in H.264 format, I get the error "No rendered photo exists on disk"

I want to export images as well as videos (.mov files) by using the Publishing Manager in Lightroom 5.6 under Windows 7, 64 Bit. For this I activated "Include Video Files" in the Publishing Manager and set "Video Format" to "H.264". When publishing, all photos are correctly published. The videos, however, are not published. Instead Lightroom returns the error: "Some export operations were not performed.", "No rendered photo exists on disk" followed by a list of the videos that could not be exported.
If I select "Original, unedited file" for "Video Format" instead, the videos are published. Also, if I manually export the videos (without using the Publishing functionality), the export works.
How can I publish videos using the H.264 format?

I just tried to export it again but this time to the desktop, not a Sandisk USB, and this time it created 4 different files, one being audio only and when I tried to play/open the others it gave a 'server error' dialogue window and I couldn't get a screen shot while this was open.

Horrible final video quality in After Effects CS6 when rendering a 1920x1080 video with H.264 format

I've been using After Effects CS6 on my Macbook Pro for over a year now with no issues. However, today when I exported a video to be rendered in 1920x1080p with H.264 format, I got the worst quality final video I've ever seen. I filmed my video files in 1920x1080p (like usual), and I clicked all the same buttons I normally do to export a video, but every HQ video I try to export looks horrible. I haven't clicked any crazy buttons or anything out of the ordinary.
I always export a video following this sequence:
File > Export > Add to Render Queue > Lossless > H.264 (quality format) > video output (make sure it's checked) > audio output (make sure it's checked) > OK > Output to Desktop
My render settings are always set as "best settings" including "full" resolution and "best" quality.
Now, when I click H.264, a "settings mismatch" pops up and says:
"Warning: Output file will be resized from 1920x1080 (1.00 PAR) to 320x1080 (6.00 PAR) to meet format constraints"
The rendering quality and playback quality within After Effects is great, but once the video is exported, it is horrible.
PLEASE HELP?! I have deadlines I need to meet!

Use the H.264 encoding presets in Adobe Media Encoder.
The H.264 export features in After Effects have been removed in later versions because of numerous problems.

Macbook Pro use H.264 Format like the iPhone?

I know that iphone and iPad have the H.264 Format in them as you can watch youtube videos on them.
I am thinking of Macbook Pro something next and I really hate Flashplayer.

I have a solution to this issue now after a discussion with Apple Support. Some where in the last few weeks, there was a change in the key that would do a Show Desktop under the Mission Control settings in the System Preferences. Even though the key sequence that was shown for the Show Desktop setting did not include the Left SHift key, by changing this first to having no key sequence and applying that and then changing it back to the F11 key, the Left SHift key issue that I was having has cleared up.
A second issue that was uncovered was that the SSD had some issues (uncovered when I ran Disk Utility using the Repair Disk key). I had to restart and use the Disk Utility through the Command R sequence to get to the stand alone Disk Utility. The SSD appears to be running better as a result as well.
Hope that this is of use to someone else in the future.

Converting swf to h.264 format?

Has anyone successfully converted a Captivate swf (that contains audio narration, such as text-to-speech) to an H.264 format? I've tried publishing to F4V and then using Adobe Media Encoder to convert to H.264 video, but the voice becomes out of sync with the video. I don't have any audio/video sync issues in the swf at all.

EDIT: actually when I use F4V with Fixed Frame Rate, the audio stays in sync, but gets distorted. Not only is the audio distorted, but the video ends up being paused at various places momentarily. I can see this happen while I am publishing as F4V--the video actually stops running/publishing momentarily (this always happens at the same places in the video). This pause always happens on the first slide as the mouse begins to move, and then happens at the same places in a few other places in the course of the video. These pauses are actually in the finished F4V. I don't think this is a problem of system resources, either.

This isn't so much of an answer as it is a question: how did this issue work out for joebor1776?! I asked this like same ? earlier today (about converting swf to h.264) but got no reply while I waited... Mine doesn't have sound but did you have to convert 1st to quicktime and then to the h.264 or did you give up to plot another process?

Does Adobe Captivate 4 allow you to produce output in the H.264 format?

O.K., I don't really understand my own question. My department is probably buying some additional Captivate licenses for a project. One of the techies asked a colleague of mine if the Captivate licenses we are buying will allow us to publish in H.264.
I don't have Captivate 4, but I'm guessing the answer is "No". Based on my understanding, H.264 is the codec for the MPEG-4 video format utilized by iTunes, YouTube, etc. Not that I fully understand exactly what a codec is.
My assumption is that a .swf to video converter would be needed to publish Captivate files in the H.264 format.
Is this correct? Or is this capability part of Adobe Captivate 4?

I certainly cannot claim to be any sort of expert on the H.264 format, but Captivate 4 only produces SWF, EXE and AVI formats. So you are correct in that you would need to convert from either the SWF or AVI format to an H.264 format. From what I understand, AVI and MP4 are the two file extensions you may find H.264 file format used. So I suppose it's possible to say that if you have a CODEC (Compressor/Decompressor) installed for H.264, Captivate could spit out an AVI encoded in H.264 format.
