Is iMovie the software I need?

Instead of me spending hours reading through the specs of iMovie, iDVD, Quicktime and others, I thought I'd post here initially, to find out what program I should be looking at. Here is what I want to do:
1. Prepare a presentation of member's photos (slides, prints, digital) for a camera club. The presentation will consist of, say, 200 images and last about 30 minutes.
2. The time that each image is on the screen will vary from about 6 seconds to 10 seconds.
3. I only ever want to use a simple dissolve (2-5 seconds) between images. Fancy wipes are not needed.
4. Sound-editing facilities within the software would be useful but not necessary – although I will need the ability to incorporate stereo sound within the package. What I mean is: I can separately generate the soundtrack as a stereo aiff file in Garageband or Sound Studio so it is timed exactly to match the presentation, and when everything is finished I can import it into the image software. In fact, this requirement isn't strictly necessary. I am happy to burn the sound to a CD and play that separately, as long as the image software allows me to stop/start/pause wherever I want and shows me the play time. If the CD and the image software get out of sync (because of power loss on the CD player, for example), I can pause the presentation, set the CD to the same time as the image software, and restart from there.
5. Image quality is the most important aspect. Thus, my first step in a particular presentation will be to determine the native resolution of the digital projector. Then all images will be scanned, cropped and resampled to exactly this resolution so that there is no other scaling performed during the presentation.
6. Following on from (5), I want the ability to have variable-size image formats. i.e. for a particular presentation I may want to exactly match the projectors capabilities, say 1024 x 768 so the images will be sampled to that size; but for the next show the projector may have 1680 x 1050 resolution. High Definition format (1920 x 1024?), is a particularly important feature because I will want to burn presentations to Blu Ray eventually, and standardize on that format.
Any suggestions on which software I should be investigating? And I should add – the simpler the better. I will be using it only for the above scenario.

No; you don't want to use iMovie.
iMovie is intended for editing video, and video - standard-definition video, in particular - has a far lower resolution than most stills cameras (digital or film).
So you will be knocking down the sharpness and detail of the originals if you convert them to video.
A high-definition photograph if held on the screen for 10 seconds is just that: one single individual picture - at whatever definition you want - staying on the screen for a particular number of seconds.
Once you bring that into iMovie, you get a stream of pictures (..30 of them a second in the US, 25 per second in Europe..) each on the screen for one thirtieth (or one twenty-fifth) of a second, at a lower resolution than the original.
Standard-def video has a resolution of (roughly) 640x480 pixels = 307,200 pixels ..or about one third of a megapixel ..and the highest-def high definition is about 6x that: 1920x1080 = 2,073,600 pixels ..two megapixels.
If your original photos were shot with anything higher than a two megapixel camera - which they probably were - then detail will be lost if you convert those pics to even the highest hi-definition video. Furthermore, the video won't (usually) look as sharp as even a 2 megapixel picture, because video is normally presented as interleaved fields of video; each with half the resolution of a complete picture.
This doesn't matter for movies, as the eye can't catch all the detail in a moving picture. But with static photos, the converted-to-video pics will look nowhere near as sharp as the digital - or film - originals.
Because of the characteristics of video, too, as opposed to static pictures, you may find that detail within shadows or highlights is nowhere near as well defined once you've converted your originals to video, instead of keeping them as photographs.
As for adjusting the pics to match the resolution of your projector(s), once again you may be losing definition by doing that. You'd need to experiment to see what happens with various resolutions - and brands - of projectors; some may intelligently resample the images themselves, to give the best possible projection. You may get "twitter" or "moiré" patterns at some resolutions if you have very fine horizontal lines in some pics ..with others, which don't have exactly horizontal fine lines, sampling the pics at twice the resolution of the intended projector(s) may give best results, or just copy them at the highest possible definition, and then let the projection do its best.
I'd use iPhoto first - as that's a program intended for handling still photos - and use it to create a few test Slideshows. iPhoto should give you all that you need, and you can Save Slideshows, and burn them to discs ..as data rather than as movies! (..Blu-Ray discs hold a huge amount of data. Burning Blu-Ray movies, though, will make the pics look poor ..unless you use 'Motion JPEG' format - instead of normal video formats - which keeps a lot of the detail which ordinary video loses: just look at Apple's Tutorials and "Get A Mac" adverts, to see how sharp MJPEG looks!)
iDVD - the Apple program which burns videos to DVDs - can't yet handle Blu-Ray burning, and will automatically downgrade hi-def video to standard-def when you make a project for burning to disc. Roxio's "Toast", can handle HD and Blu-Ray, but the same considerations apply as before: you'll still only get maximum 2 megapixel definition.
Why not try posting your question in the iPhoto Discussions, and see what expertise you can find there..?

Hold down the Option key while you boot your Mac. Then, it should show you a selection of devices. Click your flash drive and it will boot from that.

  • Digitizing Old Video Tapes I Can Figure Out Hardware is iMovie the Software

I have some old VHS tapes and some newer DV tapes.
I'd like to get convert all the old tapes so I can share digital copies with members of my family.
I think I can hook up a VCR to my DV camera and then hook that to my iMac. Failing that I'll buy some sort of converter.
Once I figure out the "hardware how?" I wonder about the "software what?" Is iMovie okay for me to work with? In what format do I store the files? bla bla bla. Right now I just want to get digital copies of all my videos; I'll edit files later.
I only want to do this conversion once and would hate to end up with a lower quality compressed file or something not compatible with editing when if I'd set things different I'd be better off if you get my drift.
I know there are many posts in these discussions about importing video -- if anyone can guide me through the advice or offer more insights I'd be grateful.
    Thanks

I'd like to get convert all the old tapes so I can share digital copies
I have done lots of that.
I think I can hook up a VCR to my DV camera and then hook that to my iMac
    Yes, that is one way.
Failing that I'll buy some sort of converter.
    I Like the Grassvalley ADVC300.
I've played around with countless other conversion systems, ranging in price from $79 to $399. Short verison, this is the ONLY unit to own. No dropped frames at all, even with questionable quality tapes, no jitter, great color, excellent sound quality. Zero setup with iMovie 06 and iDVD 09/11.
This is a prosumer deck. The time code function is alone worth the price if you have old analog footage. Absolutely NO "Out Of Sync" audio.
ADVC300 is for anyone who wants to do editing and is concerned about quality of color and speed, for the novice it is an incredible gizmo that will restore VHS tapes to a state close to the original fixing midtones, highlights and shadows on the fly. Not only can you simply convert analog to digital you can actually manipulate the signal going in (if you want to).
A bit pricey but it WORKS.
I only want to do this conversion once and would hate to end up with a lower quality compressed file or something not compatible with editing when if I'd set things different I'd be better off if you get my drift.
    I do get your drift.
I would use iMovie 06 with iDVD 09/11, why?
iMovie 09/11 uses 'single field processing' meaning every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage. iMovie 06 uses ALL of the image to form the video.
If your primary workflow is editing DV clips and making DVDs, iMovie '06 is better suited. Your movie will arrive at iDVD in DV format, which is an ideal match for making a DVD: same resolution, same pixels aspect ratio, and original quality. If you share your movie from iMovie 09/11, it gets re-rendered at 640x480 or less, and then iDVD upscales it back to 720x480. The end result is obviously not as good.
Compared to today's standards DV Video's quality is not that great, so I don't want to lose ANYTHING in my conversion, I have no quality to "spare".
iMovie 06 and iDVD 09/11 is a "lossless" combination.

  • Is Flash Media Server the software I need?

    Hello!
A client needs a Flash streaming software to best serve the following:
    750 Mb/s Internet bandwidth
    Average 7 minutes video length
    Average 1,100 video requests
3,500 video requests at peak hours
    99,9% SLA
Will Flash Media Server do the job or will I need something else?
Thank you very much for any ideas.

    > 750 Mb/s Internet bandwidth
Sure, FMS can handle 750Mbps of throughput
    > Average 7 minutes video length
Not an issue. It doesn't matter how long the videos are (although on a 32 bit OS, the file size has a limit of 2GB)
    Average 1,100 video requests
Assuming the server has adequate hardware and network resources, 1100 concurrent streams is realistic.
    >3,500 video requests at peak hours
A single FMS won't handle that many concurrent streams. You'd need to distribute the load across at least two servers for that capacity.
    >99,9% SLA
There is no SLA associated with the software. That's something your hosting provider would be responsible for, and it wouldn't apply to FMS... just to the server FMS is running on.

  • When you buy a macbook pro does it come with all the software you need

when i purchase a macbook pro with retina display. will it come with all the software i need

    Hi logan_logan,
Probably all depends on your past experience, but I'm getting a new Macbook Air next week, and I will be purchasing Microsoft Office. I have been using Word and Excel for years, and know all of the tricks, bells, and whistles, so just really don't want to go through a major learning curve to figure out how to use a new word processing and spreadsheet processing system.
I've had a little experience with Pages on my iPad (which I know is not even a close comparison to what is on the Mac), but I'm just more comfortable with Word.
So, I'd say depends on whether you want something that you are comfortable with, or something that is a new adventure! What's your pleasure?

  • When I insert the software disc for my new Palm, nothing pops up!

The CD icon doesn't show on the desktop and it doesn't show in the finder when I do 'apple' N. I've tried using the slot loading CD drive and the external CD drive I have. Nothing works. How can I get the computer to recognize the CD so I can use my new Palm software?? Please help!! Thanks!

I already tried going to palm.com and dowloading the software. The software I need isn't available for download. All other CDs I've used have worked fine for me. In January I completed wiped the hard drive and re-installed my OS. That worked just fine. Last month I installed some software for my digital camera and that worked fine. It is plausible that the CD is just bad. But that just doesn't get me any where. So frustrating! Thanks for your input, though.

I need help exporting a project i created on final cut pro 10, but it keeps saying i need to update to 10.1. To update the software, i need 4GB but my mac book pro only has 2GB

Well it's probably time to do some house/computer cleaning.
You need to clear space and maybe get a large fast external drive for media storage.
Try turning off auto updating in System Preferenses>Software Update.

  • I used Finder to organise my iMovie events into folders. In iMovie I can see the folders but the software says there are no events present. What can i do?

I used Finder to organise my iMovie events into folders. In iMovie I can see the folders but the software says there are no events in the folders. What can I do to rectify?

Very carefully use Finder to move the Events back to the top level of the Movies/iMovie Events folder. iMovie will not see them if they are nested in Folders.
If they are on an external drive, move them to the iMovie Events folder at the top level of the drive.
However, you can put iMovie projects in folders if you want.
It is best to do all moves and renames in iMovie so you do not destroy the links in your Projects. However, you need to move your events back to where they were in the Finder sonce iMovie cannot see them.
