Is Instant Hotspot On-Demand?

Is the Instant Hotspot supposed to be a "on-demand" feature?
I have the iPhone 6 Plus and a 1st gen iPad Mini. I'm able to connect to the Instant Hotspot and use it just fine although sometimes I get an "Unable to connect to remote hotspot" error. After a period of time the hotspot connection times out and when I wake my iPad it will not be connected anymore. So at this point I have to go back into the Wi-Fi settings and reconnect.
My question is whether this is supposed to happen automatically or is it necessary to manually reconnect every time?

On Demand programming is provided by the networks and FOX doesn't seem to want to play with others.
FOX programming (FOX, FX, etc) is available on-line so it may be available by VOD in the future, but not just now.
Which is probably just as well as I'd stay home and watch Archer repeatedly.

  • Instant Hotspot not working on MacBook Pro Early 2011?

    Hi and tnxs for reading.
I have a MacBook Pro Early 2011, and I cannot figure out how to use Instant Hotspot.
It is regularly working as standard hotspot by activating it on my iPhone and checking the iPhone WiFi Hotspot from WiFi menu, but otherwise is not available after the iPhone goes on stby...exactly as before.
Is this a limitation like the major part of Continuity?
    Tnxs

not working for me either and i have iphone6 and macbook mid 2014 so it cant be a hardware problem for me at least....

  • Instant hotspot and continuity in iOS 8

Hi everyone, I hope somebody can enlighten on the following:
The day iOS 8 was launched, I installed it both on my iPhone 5 and iPad Air.
I tested a few features, among them instant hotspot that worked remarkably well. I could see my phone's name in the iPad's wifi screen, just tap on it that it would turn hotspot on in the iPhone, lock the ipad and it would turn it off, flawless.
Handoffs worked equally well, and I noticed that both devices (the iPhone and the iPad) had a bluetooth pair to each other, that could not be removed. In fact, since I had paired my devices before upgrading, I had two pairs, one could be removed, the other could not. I also noticed that as soon as I open the messages app or the email app on either device a bluetooth connection would be established automatically and the app icon would show on the other device lock screen.
So far so good but, I got an iPhone 6, and got rid of my iPhone 5. The iPhone 6 was by default named Ricardo's iPhone, like my old device. Two weird things happened.
    1) I had two bluetooth devices named Ricardo's iPhone on my iPad, neither of them could be forgotten.
    2) The instant hotspot feature stopped working.
I figured out that the iPad was seeing my old device, so I changed the name of my new iPhone to Ricardo's iPhone 6, just to distinguish them. Here is what happened.
    1) I still have two iphones as paired bluetooth devices, but named Ricardo's iPhone and Ricardo's iPhone 6, not too big of a deal but annoying nonetheless.
    2) More serious, my iPad still sees my old iPhone (e.g. Ricardo's iPhone) for instant hotspot, and does not see the new one (Ricardo's iPhone 6).
    3) I can see my iPhone 6 the old way, if I turn hotspot on, I can see Ricardo's iPhone in the list of wifi network and I can connect to it, I tried that and enter the password hoping the iPad would recognize it, but not, still sees the old one.
I tried rebooting both devices, resetting network settings but no luck. I am thinking that I probably need to restore the iPad to fix this problem but it would be indeed annoying if every time you have a new device this happens.
For now, I am waiting for iOS 8.0.2 (after it has been PROPERLY tested) hoping that I least the installation will fix this, but Apple needs to fix this.

No its not their, I can see cellular options but hotspot option is missing. Attached are the screenshots.

  • Continuity, Handoff, Instant Hotspot and iMessage stop working

    2013 iMac with 10.10.2
       - Beginning two days ago, I think..(maybe coincidental with update to 10.10.2, but I thought things were working fine following) iMessage stopped syncing with other OS X and iOS devices on the same iCloud account.  All on the same network.
         - Instant Hotspot, Continuity and Handoff also do not work on the iMac...(worked great a couple days ago)
         - iMac is primary ethernet, but wifi is on also.
         - I have cycled power, turned on and off wifi, turned on and off handoff settings, turned on and off iMessage, cycled iMessage "enable account", logged out of iCloud, logged out of iMessage (on all devices).  When I turn on iMessage on the iMac - I do not get any notice on any other device that I have done so, like I do with all the other devices.
         - I did get notice on the other devices when I turned iCloud back on and wanted my keychain restored.
         - MPB is also updated to 10.10.2 and no issues.  All features work.
         - iPhone and iPad are at iOS 8.1.3
         - iPhone only sees MBP and iPad for "text forwarding"
When I send an iMessage on any of the three (MBP, iPad, iPhone) they each sync nicely.  No message received on iMac.  Before I realized I was having problems with the iMac I did see that more messages were going out as "text".  Also, when attempting to send to know iMessage account holders I was not getting the blue, rather the red highlight on the names and the "not registered with iMessage" notice.
I am tempted to just do a Time Machine restore back to a few days ago, but I would like to know if there is something else I should do first.  Seems a bit heavy handed to do that.
    Thanks
    Dave

They're going to treat every case individually.  While perhaps similar in nature, they will have to run through the same diagnostics with every new case the same way.  I have an applecare contract, and I started with online chat support for OSX issues.  Got the first level person pretty quickly who guided me through a bunch of diagnostic steps.  At the end of that session, when things were still not working, she set me up for a support callback from Level 2.  Call came in at the scheduled time less than an hour later, I got hooked up with a rep named Tyler, who had the ability to look at the devices registered under my apple id.  He said it was strange that he didn't see my macbook pro listed, though he saw my other products.  He said it would have to go to engineering.  Sent me instructions to prepare a dump file and email it to apple support, which I completed right away.  The next day, around mid-morning, my devices were getting the apple id popup message.  Tried imessage on the MBP and it worked.  Emailed Tyler that imessage appeared to be working, he replied, and it was done.  I was surprised that I didn't receive any sort of follow up that my issue had been worked and resolved, but I was very pleased with the experience with apple support.  For anyone who doesn't have an active applecare contract, I believe apple will handle Apple ID related issues for free, so that would be the path to follow.  I'm wondering if I started through support as an Apple ID issue instead of as an OSX issue, maybe it would have resolved more quickly.

  • HT6337 Handoff/Instant hotspot requirements for iPhone 4s

    HI,
Apple updates recently the "HT6337: Connect your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac using Continuity" support page which was not very clear. They added some explanations to activate and use each feature.
It's better but Handoff/Instant hotspot requirements are still not explicit for iPhone 4s : what does "(sharing iPhone calls only)" mean?
This precision is wrong because SMS/MMS sharing is available too for iPhone 4S.
    For iPhone 4S,
Call and SMS/MMS sharing is available.
It seems Handoff is not available.
    What about Instant Hotspot?
    Best regards,
    Florent.
PS : I would be nice that Apple updates the HT6337 to clarify requirements for Handoff and Instant hotspot by separating them in two distinct paragraphs.

I thank you for you answer.
I let a feedback to Apple few days ago on the document by answering "No" to the question "Helpful?" at the end of the page, and the document was updated. Unfortunately, the confusion about Instant Hotspot is still in the system requirements document (System requirements for Continuity on iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac - Apple Support). I let again a feedback. I hope Apple will update this confusing page pretty soon.

  • Instant hotspot does not show up

    I have installed logic pro x (10.0.7).
It fails to download any additional content after downloading for a short while.
I have tried everything, latest step was to erase the drive and make a clean install of the OS and then installing Logic as the first program, but it still fails.
My internet connection usually don't have any problem and my GF's mac has no problems with the internet ever.
I have Yosemite installed, but as far as I see, none else has problems with this OS and Logic or internet in general.
Anyone got an idea what the problem could be?

Not sure what your question has to do with an "Instant Hotspot" as per the subject title you gave... but anyhow...
Downloading 'Additional Content' or the Logic Pro X app Tips
Take note in particular the sections on using Ethernet instead of WiFi and the Energy Settings...

  • Instant Hotspot doesn't "just work."

I have a rMBP15 and a iPhone 6 Plus and want the mac to tether to the iPhone using Instant Hotspot. It does... sometimes. Then it doesn't and I have to go through a seemingly endless cycle of shutting down and rebooting, deleting and reestablishing network settings, etc., before it starts working again fairly dependably, until it stops working again. It's not working right now, and the shutting down and rebooting or both devices, and the turning off and on of WiFi and Bluetooth on both devices, has not turned it on again. So at this point I typically have to bring out the big guns of reseting network settings and forgetting networks and setting everything up from scratch. Which is a royal pain. What's going on?

More info: Both devices have the latest OS versions as of today. I can pair the rMBP15 and iP6+ and then manually tether via Personal Hotspot, so there is no problem with the hardware, cellular carrier, or old software.

  • Instant Hotspot / Personal hotspot not function correctly?

BEST SOLUTION: Go to settings-cellular- cellular data network,  then scroll down to personal hotsot, then do the APN setup, after that go back to settings, your hotspot will then appear under cellular. This works perfect.  give us like on  www.facebook.com/computersgh

I Have the same issue. My iPad sees instant hotspot of iPhone, but cannot connect to it due an error. All devices have been reset,  their networks have been reset, but instant hotspot cannot be reached.
I Have solution to it, it's recommended here, on support forum. solution is:
    1. Reset network settings on both devices
    2. Reset all settings on both devices(it will leave content, but erase fingerprints, ringtone settings etc.)
    3. Both operations must be executed with Bluetooth turned on.
I Tried this method and it really works. But a week later this issue raised again. I think it's Apple hard issue, so they must fix it with patch only. Permanent resets aren't solve this.
P.S. Not working properly instant hotspot prevents using  even ordinary hotspot. There is no iphone wifi network except that buggy instant hotspot.

  • Instant Hotspot: not possible to share iPad's LTE anymore?

I used to have my iPad's LTE plan in order to share it in my car with my family or in any other situations. That was one of the main reasons to purchase wi-fi / cellular version. With the new Instant Hotspot in iOS 8 only the iPhone has the modem mode and possibility to create the hotspot for other devices. Is that correct?

I was having the same issue with iPad 4, cellular + wifi model. Unlike iOS 7,Personal hotspot was not listed in Cellular Data for first time enabling.
    Following steps resolved my issue in iOS 8;
Setting >Cellular Data >APN Settings > there is a section 'Personal Hotspot', with fields 'APN, username, and Password'
    in APN field type www
then enable Airplane mode for few seconds and disable it. You should now see 'Personal Hotspot' appearing under Cellular Data and as a main listing in Settings.

  • Instant Hotspot / Personal Hotspot Not Functioning Correctly

Repost due to header spelling fail... Sorry!
Performed the iOS update to 8.1 and the instant hotspot isn't functioning. Whenever I try to connect from my MacBook I get the error: Failed to enable Personal Hotspot on "Tim's iPhone" - Check to see if the tethering device is turned on and in range of your computer.
I've reset the network settings on the iPhone, cleared all of my saved networks on my MacBook to try to get it back to a semi-reset state (though I did a full drive erase and installed Yosemite from scratch so I can't imagine my settings are very far from virgin state yet) but I'm still unable to connect unless I manually turn on the Personal Hotspot on the iPhone first (even then, connecting is a bit hit and miss which was never a problem before). Restarting each device multiple times and logging into and out of the iCloud account on each device hasn't changed anything.
Even worse is that, prior to upgrading from 8.0.2, the feature worked perfectly between my iPad and my iPhone. It even shut the personal hotspot off as soon as you disconnected from the iPhone. Now, it's hit and miss as well; Connecting every 3rd or 4th try but leaving Personal Hotspot "on" on my iPhone after disconnection.
The smooth experience between my iPad and iPhone is what gave me such high expectations for the Yosemite release. Now I'm sitting here with that still not functioning and the original experience gone. How disappointing.
    Tim

Ok... I've had some success with the issue. It seems to be a combination of resetting my network settings on my phone and reinitializing the iCloud accounts on both devices. Following are the steps that worked for me on several different devices. They may not all be absolutely necessary but it's what finally got the functionality working on all of my devices.
    1. Sign out of the iCloud account on both devices. (I let iCloud delete everything when asked. It all comes back when sign back in later)
    2. Reset Network Settings on the iPhone (General -> Reset -> Reset Network Settings)
    3. If necessary, Rename the phone to what you want it called (General -> About -> Name. Resetting network settings consistently renamed my phone to just "iPhone")
    4. Power down both devices.
    5. Restart iPhone and log back in to iCloud.
    6. Restart other device and log back into iCloud.

  • Calling using the Instant Hotspot

    Hi all,
I try to use the continuity calls through Instant Hotspot.
It's not working. I'm not sure if it's normal or if it's a config error of myself.
Do you have any idea how can I use it?
Because, in my job, I use my iPhone to be connected to the Internet. And Continuity calling should be very useful.
FYI, it's working fine when I'm connected to a regular wifi (sms, handoff, ect.).
In advance, thank you for your help :-)
    Cheers,
    Xavier, Switzerland

    Okay I follow your logic.
Question   Ipad creating instant hotspot   Phone and computer are then on this network.   So why does it not work?
The whole point of being able to use the phone at work is that my internet wireless signal is too weak to use it on my normal  network.
I have Lte  and my speed goes form  600KBS  to 40000kbs which allows me to have conversations using my computer.
Facetime audio did work although i answered it on my ipad it passed thru to the computer as the ipad is not on the network.  It worked perfect
Cellular phone call continues to say that I am not the same network when I use the computer to make the call.   Ipad same it just says it fails.
What can be done to solve if anything.
I  have tested cellular calling with my computer and iphone at home where I have a great connection and it works perfect. So it is not a hardware problem.

  • Instant hotspot Troubles

I have 2 iPhone 6 and they are both at ios8.02
    I also have a iPad 2 on ios 8.02
The iPad is wifi only and it was connecting to either phone through the instant hotspot
Now the iPad doesn't even see the phones instant hotspot
I also have a Mac book air with 10.10 public beta and it is not seeing the phones either
If I switch on personal hotspot on either phone under settings then it connects just fine, this dress l the battery too quickly for my liking
I have tried to reset network settings on both phones and the iPad without any change in the behavior
On my iPhone I can see my wife's phone and vice versa
We are all on the same colour account
    Please help

It'd all be trial and error. You can try uninstalling the new Firefox and see if that fixes things, if not then uninstall and reinstall YIM. If that still does nothing for you then you could always try a 3rd party chat program. I like Pidgin as it's very light on resources and works for AIM, MSN, YIM, Jabber, Googletalk etc. Keep in mind Pidgin probably won't work for voice chats or video chats.
Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, but hit a man with a brick and you can have all his fish...and his wife!

  • Unable to use handoff , instant hotspot...

I just updated my mac to OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 , but I am unable to use handoff, instant hotspot or any other options which it is explained here https://www.apple.com/osx/continuity/

First, if Handoff has never worked, verify that the Mac is capable of using it. Hold down the option key and select System Information... from the Apple menu. In the System Information window, select Bluetooth from the list on the left. Near the top of the summary of "Hardware, Features, and Settings," you should see this line:
              Handoff Supported: Yes
In rare cases, you might not see that indication, even though you have one of the models that is supposed to support Handoff. That could happen because of a hardware fault or a corrupt OS X installation.
Follow the instructions in this support article. All the devices using Handoff must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. If the Mac also has an Ethernet connection, disconnect the Ethernet cable.
If Handoff still doesn't work, on the mobile device, turn Handoff off and back on as directed in the linked article. On the Mac, turn Bluetooth off and back on. You might have to restart a mobile device to get it working.
Handoff is not yet completely reliable, and any improvement may only be temporary.

  • Does Instant Hotspot turn off automatically?

IOW, when the units using the hotspot are finished with doing whatever, does the Instant Hotspot turn off by itself so that cell data isn't continuing to be used?

OK, being the impatient type of person I am, I just tested some scenarios.
Went to iPad, changed wifi to Instant Hotspot and it turned on the hotspot on the phone.  Disconnected from the personal hotspot on the iPad and waited less than 5 minutes and the phone went back to my home wifi as I hoped it would.
Then cranked up the iPad again, picked the Personal Hotspot, did a quick web crawl then put the iPad to sleep.  A couple minutes later the iPhone was back to the in house wifi.  Woke up the iPad and the wifi had gone back to the in house wifi just as I'd hoped.

  • Continuity Calling THROUGH Instant Hotspot???

Is it at all possible, or will it be possible in the near future, to make and receive calls from an iPad using the WiFi connection of an Instant Hotspot from my iPhone?
In essence, the two devices would be on the same WiFi network but in a mobile fashion.  Currently, when I pair the two devices using the instant hotspot feature and attempt to make the call from my iPad, it tries for a second, then a prompt appears and reads "iPhone Call Failed".  And yes, the iPad calling function works perfectly well receiving and sending calls when connected to my WiFi at home and work, but I would love to use the feature in my car as I have a sweet iPad mount setup

    Okay I follow your logic.
