Is Iphone syncing your contacts online without user consent?

I finally downloaded the last iphone software update after trying to avoid it as long as possible - based on past experience most of the updates had ended up not working and requiring hours and days of phone calls and troubleshooting to get it fixed.
Anyway downloaded the software update and then it started syncing and backing up the iphone data. Assuming the backup would be to my local drive, I disconnected the online connections and was dismayed to see that the update/backup failed because of no connection. Why would Iphone require an online connection to do the backup? If it is storing my contacts online, I need to know - not that there is anything I have to hide. But still, I feel it is an obtrusion on privacy and more like the old AOL trying to load up your pc with all sorts of updates and backend processing without prior consent, while the user tried connecting to the internet.

You stated that you've had a problem with every update. No one "shouted out" at you here, certainly not me. I said sorry that you've had these problems, which has not been the same for me. There is no probably for me and I have no reason to lie about it. I've installed every firmware update released without issue. I'm not stating that no one has had a problem with an update, or to discount the problems you've had. I'm a fan or I wouldn't own an iPhone, but I'm certainly no insider. Either one would not prevent me from having a problem with an update. I venture to say that overall problems using a Mac with an iPhone is less problematic than with a PC.
No different with the many Windows updates. With every update, there is a percentage of users who experience a problem - some minor, and some are major, but the overwhelming majority of users don't experience any problems with an update. The same applies with OS X updates on a Mac, and with iPhone firmware updates.
Since a firmware update includes an installer and due to the size of the download, this likely makes anti-virus, anti-adware, anti-spyware, and any other ant-whatever that is required with Windows go in circles. To complete the firmware installation process, an internet connection is required to very the iPhone's activation and maybe as part of the iPhone's baseband update. Usually good for a Windows PC to disable all the anti-virus, etc. before beginning the download and install, and possibly the firewall temporarily.

~ means your Home directory. Using the command above takes you to the Home directory on the boot drive.  Your backup files are now on another drive in a directory that used to be your Home but is now a subfolder of Users so you have to specify that drive after the /Volumes, then the user name, then the rest to go there
I use OSX 10.4.11 and on it the libraries are still visible.  There's two at least.  One general one at the top level of the boot drive and another for each user (the one with the ~).  I think they made at least one of them invisible with newer OS versions.

  • Does iphone sync Outlook contact categories

Does iphone sync Outlook contact categories?

    Hi Lawrence
I have now changed from a Blackberry Q10 to an iPhone 5s and all my contacts have synced across via outlook exchange. But they have not synced into their relevant/groups and none of the contact photos have synced across either.
Apple Care now tell me that this will not happen with the iPhone due to the way that this information is stored on the phone.
Do you, or anyone else there, have any other views on this please?

If syncing contacts from a Cloud service or a supported application on the computer, remove the groups there.
There is no functionality for the user to initiate sending contacts in iOS.  If the head unit support PBAP, the contacts sync automatically when connecting to the head unit.

  • PC Crashed, need to get iPhone synced with new PC without losing data

I have an iPhone 4 which I purchased a few weeks ago. Love the phone. The PC I set it up with has crashed so I need to use another PC to store/transfer data to/from the iPhone. I don't want to lose the data I have already put on the iPhone (about 700 songs, movies, 200 apps, contacts...) so a simple sync will not work. The files on this other PC are almost identical to the files I had on the original PC. Is there any way to change the single PC the phone will connect with, without changing/losing the data already on the iPhone?

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer files/docs/pics/music/etc.
Use your backup copy to put everything on the new computer.
The music sync is one way - computer to iphone. The only exception is itunes purchases. Without syncing: File>Transfer Purchases
If you sync your iphone contacts/calendars to a blank computer, then they will be erased as well. Another reason to use your backup.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup, then you can enter one unique contact and calendar entry on the new computer. When you first sync, then you should get the option to merge.

  • Can you sync your contacts to you PC?

I am new to BB and have been spoiled with the wireless sync I was used to using the Palm Treo.  If I lost/broke or had my three year old throw my phone down the toilet (just for example) I could count on all my contacts being saved on a wireless server.
I tried doing the GMAIL account since that syncs your calendar, etc.  but it is a pain to start a whole new account and have to re-enter all my current contacts, etc.
Is there software I can purchase to back up my contacts on PC.....You know......just in case that 3 year old...or his other 4 siblings get any crazy ideas!!
    thanks

  • This possible? ==   use iTunes to sync your contacts to Macbook contacts?

    Hi guys,
As I am unable to sync my contacts from Mobileme to my contacts in my macbook (my earlier post), a possible solution I was thinking of is if I am able to use iTunes and sync the contacts from my iphone into my contacts on my Macbook.
Is this possible and if so, can you tell me the steps please.... a million thanks

No. The iPhone stores no data on a sim card, thus there is no way to do what you want using iTunes.

  • IPhone sync of Contacts from Outlook 2003 on a PC ignores "File As"

In Outlook, the contact can be filed by the person's name, or by their company. When I sync to the iPhone, all contacts are filed by name...even those designated in Outlook to file as the Company. Any ideas?? Thanks...

the contacts are visible only when the phone is connected. or you need to do a backup of the phonebook or sync with outlook.

  • Account log out without user consent

    Hi all,
There are 4 separate user accounts under my MacBook Pro running Lion. Today I logged into one account and then used switch user to switch to another account.
When I wanted to switch back to the previous account, it appeared to be logged out. I didn't do it, and was not sure about what caused it.
May I ask whether anyone has the same issue or knows the causes and solutions?
    Thanks a lot.

    >>At the Log in Screen I guess there is no way to log out a user unless you log in and log off.
That's true, other than restart, which gives you the option, while warning that they may lose unsaved changes.

It works at least in Mac OS 10.6. I don't know about Mavericks.
It does work, and testing here, on the next login, windows & apps are just as they were left for the other user, even just-edited & unsaved files... no promises though.

  • Why in the world is an embedded social networking plugin included in firefox without user consent? Looks like the end of Mozilla!!

Seems like such a clear violation of everything firefox has stood for up to this point. Selling out and embedding spyware like everyone else?? The internet is about to completely die huh?
How do I disable completely this unrequested feature that was stealthily inserted into firefox between the last time I ran the browser?
Uninstall is legitimate, but I'd prefer another option first.

'''''You are incorrect.''''' The Hello feature is built into Firefox, it's not an add-on -- not a plugin, not an extension.
Hello is part of a W3C WebRTC API ''(WebRTC 1.0: Real-time Communication Between Browsers)'' that that supports browser-to-browser applications for voice calling, video chat, and P2P file sharing without the need of either internal or external plugins.

To disable Hello - type '''about:config''' in the Location Bar and hit Enter.
''Use the Search field at the top.''
Double-click this preference - '''loop.enabled''' - to ''toggle'' it to '''''false'''''.
    Then restart Firefox.

  • Google safe browsing: meaning of "malicious software being downloaded and installed without user consent"

    As an example, see http://www.google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?site=google.com
What does this phrase mean? Is it a browse-and-get-owned exploit? Is it for outdated browsers, or modern browsers too? Does it require specific vulnerable plugins to be active, such as Java?

Read the following about "drive-by downloads". Item 2 at the top of the page. User does not need to click on something on the infected page for a download to occur. Simply visiting the page is enough for the download to occur.

You've got an  incompatible Logitech driver and java was incompletely uninstalled.
You may have a problem with the Wacom driver.
I don't know if fixing those things will help.
There also a few window server errors, but I don't know if they are causal.
If you can note the time of the hangs, that might help narrow it down in the logs.

  • No Sync of contacts+calender since upgrade to iTunes 7.7 and/or iPhone 2.0

Windows Vista, Outlook 2007, iTunes 7.7, iPhone 2.0
After Upgrading to iTunes 7.7 and iPhone 2.0 neither my contacts nor my calender syncs anymore.
Often (but not allways), when connecting iPhone to my PC, I am getting the error "iTunes was unable to load provider data from Sync Services. Reconnect or try later"
When this happens, most of the time (but not always) my entries for syncing calender, contacts etc. under "Info" are missing. In these cases synching is not possile at all.
In those rare occasions, when the entries are not missing, ...
... synchronizing takes > 30 Minutes (much longer then before the update)
... new calender and contact data in Outlook are ot syncronized to iPhone and vice versa
    Note:
    1. De- and Re-Installing iTunes (íncl. Apple Mobile Device Support, Apple Software Update und Quicktime) did not solve the problem
    2. Resetting the sync history did not solve the problem
    3. Deleting data backup did not solve the problem
    4. When Syncronizing at a different windows user I do not receive the error "iTunes was unable to load provider data from Sync Services", but still: syncing does not work!
    5. On my iPhone there are 2 calenders: Home and "Outloook Calender"
    6. There were backups of two different iPhones in my iTune (which I have deleted)
    7. All podcasts were gone from my iPhone - after resetting the sync history there were transfered by to iPhone
    8. Right after the update, iTunes wanted to update each contact in Outlook (which I did not allow) - after resetting the sync history this message did not appear again
Anyone any idea? I love my iPhone but when I cannot trust that data is not in synch between Outlook an IPhone its not much more than a mobile phone!

I ran into this the first immeidately after upgrading to 7.7 (at least the calendars, I didn't have much of an issue with contacts). Long story short, I think it has to do with the "Home" sub-calendar it creates. Removing this and redirecting new events back to Calendar does not resolve the issue. It seems that whatever it does, corrupts the Outlook Data File (PST file) permenently.
Fortunately for me, my profile at home is very simple and I only use it to sync personal events and contacts. I tried a number of "fixes" including resetting the sync history in iTunes, rebooting multiple times etc. What fixed it for me was the following (though I would only recommend it if you know what you are doing as you can mess up your entire outlook profile if you don't). This is the short short version of these instructions... if you don't know how to accomplish these steps I'd suggest asking someone that does. BTW, this only deals with a simple profile with calendars and contacts. If your profile contains a lot of additional personal information that the iPhone does not support (notes, etc.) you will need to export these folders into individual files for later import into the reconstructed PST file.
    1) Disconnect the iPhone and close everything down (iTunes, Outlook, etc), make a backup of your PST file just in case things go wrong.
    2) Create a new data file and set it as the default.
    3) Open iTunes (before connecting the iPhone again) and click the Reset Sync History button in the preferences.
    4) Open up outlook just to make sure the new profile is working, then close it again.
    5) Connect the phone to have it sync your contacts and calendars back to outlook.
    6) The sync of both contacts and calendars should work correctly now.
Again, please note that these instructions left a lot of detail out concerning the individual steps. If you need help with these I'd suggest seeking out someone that has some experience with this process for help to reduce the risk of losing data in the process.
The bottom line for me was that it seemed that recreating the PST file and reimporting the data (not just copying the whole file into a new one) fixed the issue for me. Obviously, one would hope that Apple devises a better solution than this in the long term.

  • New PC: how can I sync my Iphone with a new PC without loosing data?

I have an old Windows Vista PC with Itunes.
I want to sync my iPhone4 with a new Windows 8 PC.
I only sync music and video with the iphone and itunes, NOT email adress contacts, etc (I do not want to mix and mingle all my contacts on PC and phone).
I DO want to take all the contacts to the new itunes.
Problem: When I connect my iphone to the new Windows 8 PC with the new Itunes, I get the warning that "all the data on the iphone will be replaced with the data on the Itunes", in other words: the iphone will be empty
Anyone any advice how to do this simple thing which is made super complex by Apple? Thanks.
( @ Apple: Apple engineers and Apple marketing should be ashamed that there is no simple way to do this, and there is no simple and clear information on the apple website for this !!!)

Copy everything from the old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer,  to the new one.
To what do you sync your contacts?  Icloud?  Other service?
Problem: When I connect my iphone to the new Windows 8 PC with the new Itunes, I get the warning that "all the data on the iphone will be replaced with the data on the Itunes", in other words: the iphone will be empty
Correct.  The iphone is not a storage/backup device.  It simply mirrors the selected content of the computer to which it is synced.
It should be very simple.  Everything should be on your computer, or cloud service.  The itunes simply allows your information from your computer, cloud service to be protable.
Copy everything to the new computer, then sync.
