Is iPhoto 09 more robust than 08?

Hi All,
I never upgraded to iLife 09 because I didn't want any of the new features. However, iPhoto has begun to corrupt its database for the second time in 3 years and I was wondering if iLife 09 was less likely to cause this problem.
This is the standard problem where thumbnails of photos show but the file reference to the full image is corrupt. I just noticed it on some old photos so I'm not sure of my backup will be similarly affected. This is not the place to ask how to fix the problem but I thought Terence and Toady would be likely to know if iPhoto 09 is the long term solution. =)
Personally, I'm wondering if iLife '10 will catch my eye.
Ta
Dave

Yes iPhoto '09 appears to be a lot more robust and the new rebuild the iPhoto database from the last automatic database backup is very helpful when there are problems

  • Looking for something more robust than global variables

    Hi,
The company I work for makes really big deals based on the Forms we develop,
and it makes me edgy to rely on :Global.variables to assign big amounts of money
    to a field or another.
Maybe someone could direct me to a paper about a more robust scheme to run tests deciding what is going to happen next, like calling another form or populating another block?
    Many thanks :-)

    JeanParis,
I did a quick Google search, but didn't find any reference material on you question so I'll give you my personal preference. Bear in mind, it truly was a "quick" search. I'm sure there is information about this topic somewhere.
I use a Global Variable (GV) when a value is needed by significant number of Forms in the application. If the value of the is only needed by a few Forms, then I use a Parameter List. When I do use GVs, I only use them for as long as I need them. In other words, I'll assign the value of the GV to a Forms Block Item (base table or Control Block) or a parameter and then set the value of the GV to NULL. This ensures the value is only available "Globally" for as long as it is absolutely needed. This does cause a little extra work, but it make the Form safer in my opinion.
If I simply need to have access to a "Global Variable" within the scope of a single form, I prefer to use a Form Parameter (FP). I like using using FPs over a Control Block (CB) Item because there is less overhead (attributes of a FP) than with an Item (attributes of the Item) in a CB. I know this is nit-picking, but there is a cost associated with each attribute that is loaded into memory and I like to keep this cost to a minimum. (I suppose if you sub-classed your CB Item then it would share the attributes and reduce the overhead even more). I develop Forms for the web using Forms 10g so any time I can shave off the load-time of my Form is worth it to me.
    Hope this helps.

Help!!!!! I need to get iphoto lib off of hd which is running really slowly, and clicks rather more loudly than usual, how do i do this, im even on my iphone asking this! Computer also runs inly marginally faster in safe boot mode! Could the apple store help?

It certainly sounds like your harddrive is dying.  I would Immediately backup your harddrive to an external USB or Firewire harddrive Before doing anything else.  It just may save your data in time before you lose it all.
    Hope this helps

  • IPhoto downloaded more than 1000 pictures

    Hello all,
I lost my phone and Im trying to recover the pictures using MyPhotoStream on IPhoto.
I read that its supposed to save the last 1000 pictures on your phone. Somehow the IPhoto managed to download 1800 pictures instead to my Macbook Pro. What is going on? Could someone give me a light of where those 800 pictures come from?
Would it maybe be possible to get the rest?
    Thanks in advance,
    Joao

    Joao,
the limits to the photo stream are just guidelines. You may be lucky and the Photo Stream may download more photos than the 1000 photos limit, but you cannot rely on that.
Sometimes I am finding more than 1000 photos in the stream, but sometimes only the last month's photos, far less than 1000 pics.
The bottleneck is iCloud. All your devices upload the new photos to a cache in iCloud and other devices have one month time to retrieve the new photos from there - and less than a month's time, if iCloud already holds 1000 photos. Then the older photos will/may be removed.
Your macs have a second cache of downloaded contents from iCloud, and that cache may differ from what is currently visible in iCloud. Perhaps your additional photos came from your local iCloud storage in your user library. On your mac the photo stream lives in your user library in
    ~/Library/Application Support/iLifeAssetManagement/assets/
You may want to look at these documents:
    iCloud: Photo Stream FAQ
    iCloud: Photo Stream limits

    Hello Susan,
Not sure if I have fully understood your question but have you tried ...
iPhoto > iPhoto help > browse help > view and organise.  Perhaps this touches on some of your needs.
Usually, best results for questions come from posting to the forum directly related to the question, in this case iPhoto.  That tends to find the gurus

  • How do I change the image title when it is uploaded from iphoto to iweb. At the moment the image title is /shapeimage_1.png and I would like to put in something more relevant than just shapeimage?

How do I change the image title when it is uploaded from iphoto to iweb. At the moment the image title is /shapeimage_2.png and I would like to put in something more relevant than just shapeimage_2?

When you drag images from iPhoto to iWeb, iWeb retains the original filename.
When you use a mask, iWeb creates a png file with the shapeimage name.
So do not use a mask and crop your images before dropping them on the iWeb canvas.
When you use an irregularly shaped mask, then png files are created. They have to be png because of the transparency of the shape.
You can use a 3rd party application to create the png images yourself, and give them a proper name.
Or use the published png files, rename them and drop them back onto the iWeb canvas, while first removing the previous images.

  • Can I make a book from iPhoto that is more words than pictures?

Can I make a book from iPhoto that is more words than pictures?

Sure - use lots of all text pages
You can not modify the templates - you have to fine one that works for you - samples of iPHoto '09 templets are here - they pretty much exist in '11 plus there are more options - what version of iPhoto do you have?

  • If I have a pic in more than one album, does iPhoto make more than one copy of that pic?  When I search the file name on finder, it seems to be showing one copy of that file for every album it's in.

If I have a pic in more than one album, does iPhoto make more than one copy of that pic?  When I search the file name on finder, it seems to be showing one copy of that file for every album it's in.

No it doesn't. Albums simply reference the photos in the Library. A single shot can be in 100 albus and use no extra disk space at all.
If you have the same shot in two Events then yes, the file is duplicated.
When I search the file name on finder, it seems to be showing one copy of that file for every album it's in.
The Finder doesn't really understand the iPhoto Library. It's quite possible for the iPhoto Library to contain many files with the same name. The Library also contains different versions of the same shot - thumbnail, originals and edited version. This is normal.

  • Being deaf, I rely on the vibrate mode to alert me to incoming messages. I recently obtained an iPhone 4 and I find its vibrate mode wimpy, causing me to miss calls. Is there any way to make it more robust?

Being deaf, I rely on the vibrate mode to alert me to incoming messages or reminders. I haven't had problems with my previous PDAs such as Blackberry and Motorola, but since I obtained an iPhone 4, I`ve discovered that its vibrate mode is more of a whimper than anything else. I`ve missed many calls as its vibes are indiscernible when it`s in the holster on my belt. Is there any way to make the vibes more robust? I`ve amped up the ring volume control to no avail.

No, there is no adjustment for the vibrating mode.

I have a Canon MX882 printer and more often than note get an error message that says "Printer not Connected." When I check the printer itself, I get confirmation that the access point is connected. I tried reloading the software and that seemed to have solved the problem for awhile but I'm experiencing the same problem. Any ideas what is causing this?

Did you delete all receipts with iDVD in the file name  with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/  folder before installing the new copy?  If not then do so and delete the new application also.

  • Should I upgrade to Macericks now from 10.6.8 on my i-Mac(mid 2007, core 2 duo?). Will Mavericks be more secure than 10.6.8 ? 10.6.8 has been great, it runs great with all my apps but am concerned about future supportibility?

Should I upgrade to Mavericks now from 10.6.8 (i-Mac, mid 2007, core 2 duo)? Will Mavericks be more secure than 10.6.8 ?  I have the latest version of 10.6.8 and have upgraded my memory to 4GB. This could be one reason for me to make the move now.
10.6.8 has been great, it runs great with all my apps but am concerned about lack of support now. I know my PC apps will not work but maybe some apps that work now will "walk away" from 10.6.8 and then there's the security question of above.
I am also concerned about iPhoto 9 transition to i-Photo 11 and compatibility of my Time Machine WD Passport HD (format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled) based on several questions in applicable forums.
Thanks for your help in this important decision!

If I were you I would stick with Snow Leopard. It's much better suited to your old hardware. That said:
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • "Last Month" in RECENT shows a lot more photos than just last month's photo

For some reason when I select "Last Month" in RECENT (on the left) I get a lot more photos than just last month, it seems like just about all the photos from the current year!
Any one else running into this problem?
By the way, my library was originally created using iPhoto '07 and I upgraded when iLife '08 came out.

Indeed that is the case but it sounds to me like a bug and not a feature.
I agree - but since this is just a user forum that is all I can do
report to Apple -- iphoto menu ==> Provide iPhoto feedback - they can change it

  • Is there a wider need for an industrial spec, hard cased, scratch and bump resistant iPad and iPhone? (one that is more robust to outdoors and an engineering environment.

Is there a wider need for an industrial spec, hard cased, scratch and bump resistant iPad and iPhone? (ones that are more robust in the outdoors and an engineering environment.) With the acceptance of app based problem solving in industry, the only obstacle to purchasing apple products seems to be their emphasis on providing an asthetic product that looks cool. Industry however, needs something that is harder wearing, splashproof/showerproof, work in the cold and dirt and is fully wipeable. If such an apple product existed I believe they would move units.

I use the ipad in a hydrometallurgical plant.  Lots of dust, harsh chemicals, and where equipment come to die.
I've used laptops/ tablet pcs.  All having a very bad problem of sucking in air to cool the computer.  The slight acid mist in the air corrodes the contacts in the computer and they last ~ 4 months.
I have moved on to using a ipad currently in a glorified zip lock bag from the internet that has been working for the last year.   I haven't dropped it yet so that's great.  Most of my applications are done in a virtualized environment where i connect in to using RDP.
It works flawlessly.  When the zip lock bag i'm usign gets too scratched up to read easily, I just replace the 10$ bag.
I do want another case.  I am waiting on the lifeproof case coming out for the ipad2.  Shockproof, dustproof, and waterproof.   Much classier than my zip lock bag solution.
Within my plant, there is 4 ipads.
they have fit the bill so far.  Only downfall of ipad for our windows enterprise system is the lack of sharepoint browsing natively within the ipad.  I can do it with RDP but come on. . .

  • Why is an "original" iPhoto export poorer quality than my original photo?!

    Hi Everyone,
I hope you're all well. I had a question regarding iPhoto - I have an SLR which takes really good quality pictures, and I wanted to back them up in more than one location. I already have them in my iPhoto library - however, when I tried to export them with the "Original" option on File Export, and compared the exported version to the ones in iPhoto, its poorer quality than the one in iPhoto! Even though I selected "Original" quality!! However, when I exported it using PNG, it was exactly like the photos imported in to iPhoto. I understand that PNG is a lossless file format, but I am very confused as to why exporting photos in its original format gives a worse quality picture!
Would someone please be able to explain what is going on, and why the original export is much worse than PNG?
    Thank you for your time!
    Regards

How are you determining that the export is "much worse" than the imported photo
What format are you shooting on the DSLR (I assume it is digital)? What format are you exporting?
For what it is worth I do two daily backups (Time Machine running hourly and a daily bootable clone of my entier system) and I dod an occasional off site backup and I use three 32 GB level 10 SD cards so even shooting 16 MP RAW I only rotate back to the oldest card about once a year giving me a year's originals in addito=ion to my other backups

  • Is DVD Studio Pro More Reliable Than iDVD?

Is DVD Studio Pro more reliable than iDVD?
Because my needs are simple, I thought I'd just use iDVD to burn DVDs. I created a movie in Final Cut Express, exported it as a Quicktime movie with chapter markers, and created an iDVD project around it. The iDVD project recognizes the chapter markers and it all plays just fine from within iDVD, but I haven't been able to successfully burn a DVD of the project.
The video is a little over an hour long. When I start the burn process a box tells me that it will take something like 3 hours and 45 minutes, and the clock starts ticking down. Fine. Then somewhere around two hours later, iDVD quits and I get a message saying only that iDVD "quit unexpectedly." (As if I didn't know that.) The same thing happens when I try to save as a disc image instead of burning directly to a DVD. I've got plenty of hard disk space, have repaired permissions, etc.
This leaves me wondering whether DVD Studio Pro might be a more robust program. This is a very simple project -- one video, 13 chapters -- so it's very disappointing that iDVD can't seem to deal with it.
So -- is there any general consensus about how DVD Studio Pro compares to iDVD in terms of stability and reliability?

I do not think there is a clear answer on that one. I use both and find iDVD has less issues than DVD SP (not that DVD SP has a ton of issues, but enough that eventually you will probably run into something that will throw things off and will need to know the workaround.)
If you look at the boards you will see people that have problems with both applications. Not that either one is bad, but since boards are designed to help with issues, it is rare that you get someone saying "Wow this has been rock solid for a year" so it is always a grain of salt.
DVD SP does give you more control over things, but by the same token it may not be the application you need. In other words since it is now part of the Final Cut Studio you would need to take a look at the Studio and see if it is something you want. The iApps overall, IMHO, do quite alot for many things and I use them often depending on what I am trying to do. Your project should work it sounds like and there may be something going on (well yes there is of course) You may want to take a quick look at these threads where people have quit issues with iDVD and see if any of the details in th workflow, computer etc are similar and if there are solutions.
