Is iphoto 32-bit or 64-bit?

I was considering iPhoto on my MacPro3,1 under Mountain Lion (and later, Mavericks) but most of the 32-bit software I use crashes when I use a USB switch.  Is Iphoto a 32-bit application like iMovie or is it 64-bit?

The most recent version of iPhoto is 64 bit.

When I move a RAW file from IPhoto on my macbook pro to desktop or Photoshop it changes to a jpeg and reduces in size. How can I get the Raw file to move across?

I create separate folders based on the year and then the actual date of when I take images. You can make those folders anywhere on any hard drive that is connected to your Mac whether internal or external. I also use the Photoshop Photo Downloader that is included with Photoshop/Bridge and it will create the date folder so all I do is create a Year folder.
Open Bridge or click on the Bridge icon in PS and in the File menu item in Bridge select "Get photos from Camera". It can be a camera connected to your Mac or a memory card from a camera. A window will open and you then select the camera or memory card. Set the location they will be downloaded to, just the folder and you can Browse to a folder that you created, then in the "Create  Subfolders drop down select what date stamp you want to use or or custom name or not to create subfolders at all.
I've never cared for iPhoto one bit. I tried it but found it way to restrictive. It likes to have full control over how you interact with your images.

  • IPhoto '08 and Leopard

I am using an iMac G5 with 1.5 GB DDR SDRAM, 160 GB Hard Drive and recently upgraded to OS 10.5.1 Leopard. I am using iPhoto '08 Version 7.1.1 (354) and currently have just over 3000 photos (8.2 GB) in the library.
When I try to scroll in the photo viewing window when in "Photos" mode in the source list it is extremely slow, erratic and jerky. Also when in this mode even moving the "Zoom in/Zoom out" slider is slow and jerky. I don't check the "Outline" or "Drop Shadow" in the prefs.
On the other hand when I go to "Events" mode in the source list everything seems to be smooth and fairly rapid, certainly by comparison. I am puzzled and very frustrated by this especially since I went to the trouble and expense to upgrade my memory to 1.5 GBs. Is Leopard the culprit or is it my latest version of iPhoto? Or both?

    jerrydav:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I don't think it's the amount of memory that's the culprit. 1.5G is plenty. Is iPHoto slow in opening? Do you open into the Photo section with all thumbnails displayed? If so, select show Event names and close all of the events before shutting down iPhoto. Control click on of of the event triangles to open or close all at the same time. Having all the thumbnails open and fairly large can slow iPhoto a bit.
How much free space do you have on your boot drive? Too little can definitely affect performance, not only of iPhoto but the system and other applications. Report back with how much free space you have.
    Happy Holidays
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IPhoto crashing during edit with SL/GMA950

Since upgrading a MacBook2,1 (Core 2 Duo, GMA950) to SL/iPhoto 09 it consistently has problems while performing almost any image adjustments in full screen edit mode; hanging, showing large bars of vertical 'noise' and sometimes leaving the screen blank forcing a restart. Each time this happens there is the same 'problem' reported in the logs:
[0x0-0xf00f].com.apple.iPhoto[124] CoreImage: CIGaussianReduction4: fragment program failed to compile
[0x0-0xf00f].com.apple.iPhoto[124] CoreImage: CIGaussianReduction4: falling back to software
[0x0-0xf00f].com.apple.iPhoto[124] CoreImage: CIGaussianReduction4: fragment program failed to compile
[0x0-0xf00f].com.apple.iPhoto[124] CoreImage: CIGaussianReduction4: falling back to software
My understanding is that this is referring to the interface between CoreImage and the 'GPU' where LLVM tries to determine on the fly whether to use the GPU or emulate the OpenGL functions in software. The fact that it can't compile is odd, the only thing that I can think of is that maybe there is a JIT cache somewhere that is corrupted but I have no idea how that can be reset.
Anyone any ideas on this? Anyone else seen this (which is making iPhoto a bit unusable)?
I have tried the obvious already
    1) SMC reset, PRAM reset
    2) Reinstalled iPhoto & SL & rebuilt iPhoto library/thumbnails
    3) Deleted the user/Library/Cache directory
    Thanks in advance

Upgrading to iLife 11 (iPhoto 9.0) appears to have resolved the problem. It makes much heavier use of GPU acceleration so presumably the code in this area has been changed.
It's not a bad upgrade even if it is only UI changes though beware there are issues upgrading iPhoto 8 databases (make sure everything is backup up and they have been updated to the very latest version of iPhoto 8 before upgrading to 9.0). 1 out of of my databases would not update.

  • How do I migrate my Windows Photoshop Elements 12 to iPhoto?

I am switching to a Macbook Pro and want to move my photos that are stored with Photoshop Elements 12 on a Windows Laptop.  I want to use iPhoto rather than Photoshop Elements for Mac.  How do you do this and preserve all the tag information?

Basically that is a question for Adobe - How do you get the "tag" information in PSE 12 recorded in standard EXIF or IPTC fields so other standard photo programs can access it
When you import photos into iPhoto a bit for bit copy is made and the info in the standard EXIF and IPTC fields is available for use

  • Is iPhoto for me?

    Hey All,
I have been messing around with iPhoto a bit, and unless I am missing something it looks like it's not designed to be very practical.
I already know that it doesn't write to the actual Metadata and the only way to have it do that is to export the file, which ***** if you want to quickly backup / share photos manually.
The other problem I am having is how do I keep iPhoto from importing the files? I have all my photos on external drives and I don't want it importing them all to one giant directory. How do I keep iPhoto working on the original files and not making copies all over the place?
How big can the library be before iPhoto starts to bog down?
If I simply can't get it to work how I want, what is the best way to delete iPhoto
Bonus Question: Anyone usind Picasa for Mac?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

It sound like you do not want a powerful database that manages your photos but want a simple filemanager - iPhoto is not for you but Picasa probably is
iPhoto is an SQL database program and that is what gives it so much power - and as is true with all databases the information is not kept in one place as a file and to connect it together you must export it
You can have iPhoto reference your original photos (this is not recommended) but that does not change its operation at all - the information is stored in a database and modifications are stored in the iPhoto library and the only way to get intact information is to have iPhoto assemble it for you
How big can the library be before iPhoto starts to bog down?
That, of course, depends on your system, RAM, processor, disk, etc
If I simply can't get it to work how I want, what is the best way to delete iPhoto
You can not get it to work like you want - it works like it was designed - to get rid of it Drag it to the trash - the way you delete anything ont he Mac

  • IPhoto 11 book themes...

    Quick Q People.
When I purchase iPhoto 11 can I gain access to the the new book & slideshow templates that come with iPhoto via aperture?
    Cheers

Aperture can share its previews with iPhoto. When in iPhoto you can see the Aperture library,*File->Show Aperture Library* You can see all your projects, albums, smart albums etc. You can drag from Aperture into iPhoto but remember you're dragging the Aperture preview so keep that in mind when you setting the Aperture preview settings.
Once you have the images in iPhoto you of course can then use all iPhoto's bits on those images.

I have reinstalled Mac OSX 10.6.3 and done the updates from there.
I have reinstalled ilife 11 from disk and done the updates.
I have deleted all the suggested files and then redone install and updates.
I have tried just reinstalling iphoto and doing updates.
Is there any way to get a replacement -  /Library/Frameworks/iLifeSlideshow.framework/Versions/A/iLifeSlideshow
    file with the right architecture?

    Hello Susan,
Not sure if I have fully understood your question but have you tried ...

Usually, best results for questions come from posting to the forum directly related to the question, in this case iPhoto.  That tends to find the gurus

Can someone please tell me how to convert RAW files to jpeg RGB 8 bit in iphoto on an iMac?

  • How to save RAW edits as 16-bit TIFF? Can't find in Aperture, easy on iPhoto

In iPhoto there is "advanced preferences" options to save RAW edits as 16-bit TIFF. Where is this option in Aperture?

I suppose I do not understand how Aperture saves processed RAW photos then; in iPhoto by contrast, the default saves them as JPEG unless the TIFF option is selected.
If you are shooting RAW, Aperture will always store the original RAW file and the sequence of adjustments to produce the image version. It does not render the edited image and create an image file. Only when you export the edited image or share it, will a file of the processed image created.
All editing is always done starting from the RAW file and adding all adjustments. You will see the resulting image in the browser, but the rendered image file will only be created when you need it outside Aperture, and then you can select a suitable export preset.  Edited image versions do not take up much extra space, only for thumbnails and optional JPEG previews.

I don't think that Aperture is what you're looking for. Try Graphic Convertor
    http://www.lemkesoft.com/en/index.htm
or try searching on http://www.macupdate.com using 'image editor'.

  • Time Machine backup missing bits of iPhoto library

I just noticed that the size of my iPhoto '09 library as seen in the Latest directory on the backup drive is a little smaller than the current size of my iPhoto library. The backup is up to date. I made sure by running Time Machine manually.
After some exploring I found whole directories within the iPhoto package structure that are just missing on the backup drive. For example, iPhoto Library / Modified / 2009 / Sep 26, 2009 is missing. I can't understand why. TM has run plenty of times since those photos were imported into iPhoto. I found other directories missing, too.
What's up with this? At this point I no longer trust Time Machine. If it's not backing up these directories what else is it not backing up?

Move/backup/move back/backup did not fix the problem. TM still didn't backup the missing directories.
I was finally able to convince TM to do the right thing by following the procedure described here:
    http://www.nzmac.com/quick-tips/time-machine/how-do-i-reset-time-machine.html
This isn't a solution because I still don't know what caused TM to think that it backed up something that it didn't back up. But the article was suggested by a friend of mine in IT who also owns a few Macs. After following the procedure and running TM again I can see all of the previously missing files backed up on the ext drive. I also used BackupLoupe (http://www.soma-zone.com/BackupLoupe/) to browse the files that were actually copied by the last backup. I see that TM copied the directories that I knew were missing and two other directories that I did not know were missing.
At this point I think my TM backup is complete. But now I'm on the lookout for a better backup solution. Until I find it I'll need to periodically compare backup sizes to make sure that TM keeps doing its job.
