Is iPhoto help wrong?

I moved several 4 or 5 iphoto libraries to an external disk. I can access all of them except the one I was last used at the time of the move. help says:
IMPORTANT: If you've created multiple photo libraries, be sure to move only the library currently displayed when iPhoto is open. If you want to move a photo library other than the one you're currently working on, you first need to switch to it. To learn more about switching between photo libraries, click "Tell me more."
My experience is opposite to what I understand help is stating.
How can I recover the library with the albums, slide shows, keywords etc. I have seen how to recover the photos, but I want the other work I have put in over the last 100 hours.
Thank you. RGB99

Lori: All the libraries had different names. Yes I can see all of them when in the finder. I can open all of them by starting iPhoto with the option key depressed except the one I was using last before I quit iPhoto and moved them. When I select that library the process just sits there, no loading pictures as it does when it opens the other libraries. I am able to get the pictures out of that library but without their keywords, smart folders, titles and slide shows. there are about 320 pictures all titled and organized that I do not look forward to labeling and organizing again. there must be a way to reset what ever got unset by the move.
The help paragraph I quoted stated that I would only be able to open the one I was using. What happened is the opposite to what help states.
Thanks Reg99

I tried upgrading permissions but it did not help!?  Can anyone tell me what is wrong?  Thanks

    Try
Reboot the computer, see if that fixes it.
    Then try:
Backup your files off the computer (not TimeMachine) and disconnect
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk and simply reinstalling OS X
Log in and update to 10.6.8
c boot off the 10.6 disk again and use Disk Utility >Repair Disk
reboot and all should be fine, except some third party programs that install kext files, those will have to be reinstalled from fresh sources.

  • IPhoto Help tips don't help create new Photo Library

I have 35 photos of folks associated with the magazine I edit. I created a separate album for them in the present Photo Library, but I would like to disconnect them from there and keep them in a totally distinct Editorial Photo Library. The Help tips for iPhoto allow for this action, but in my attempts to make it happen, iPhoto would not launch; it continues to launch only in the original way, with the lone Library and the usual albums with all their photos.
Not wishing to risk loss of hundreds of photos, I abandoned my attempt. All I really want to accomplish is to house the Editorial photos in a completely different place. This collection will expand as the magazine takes on new contributing authors, but I don't want any of these photos intermixed with my personal albums. Part of the reason for this is that I wish to preserve my method of captioning personal photos with numerical prefixes. This is the only sure way I have found to have photos sort strictly chronologically; no alpha method works worth a fig. I would still prefer that the default launch would bring up my personal Photo Library; but it would sure be nice to be able to toggle to the only other photo library that I intend ever to use.

I'm not sure which tip you're following. When you change the name of the "current" iPhoto library, the next restart cannot open in the renamed library on its own. Your choices are to create a new library, or locate an existing one. If you follow the steps in the iPhoto Help topic "Creating a new photo library", I don't see how you can go wrong.
To bring up a library other than the current photo library, you would follow the instruction in the iPhoto Help topic "Switching between photo libraries". If you want to keep your several photo libraries all together in the Pictures folder, you just need different names for each of the iPhoto Library folders.
Export the 35 photos (simply drag them from the iPhoto window) to a temporary folder on the desktop, then restart iPhoto with the new library and import the contents of the temporary folder. You can delete the photos from the initial iPhoto collection any time after you've successfully exported them.

  • Iphoto help unavailable

Hi, Today I upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard and iLife '09 to iLife '11. When I started iPhoto, it upgraded the photo collection. I'm trying to use the help tutorials to see what's new,  but ALL help topics display as
The selected topic is currently unavailable.
To see all iPhoto Help, you must be connected to the Internet.
I am, of course, connected to the internet - else I couldn't be posting this!
Software Update says I'm completely up to date (ran several updates today).
    Thanks for any suggestions,

    Hello KIRS10MG,
The same thing happened to me, but it was 7 DAYS after I "updated" (read "downgraded") my iphoto 11 to ver.9.2.1
I found what appears to be my photos by going to iphoto and clicking on "file" then clicking on "import to library", then going to the bottom part of the left-hand column where it says "media", and clicking on "photos", then, on the top menu bar just to the right of the word "photos" will be  a blue or graphite "up-down" arrows box. Click on that, and you should get some choices that you may not recognize, but explore them with the "thumbnails" format selected (that's the one that looks like 4 little squares, it's just to the left of the aforementioned "photos with the up-down arrows" selection). Exploring this in the thumbnails view should allow you to see your photos that "disappeared" Then you should be able to manually import them back into iphoto.
WHY ALL THIS GOBBLDEYGOOK IS NECESSARY IS SOMETHING ONLY THE apple SOFTWARE UPDATERS KNOW!!!!!
Personally, I have yet to restore my photos to where they were originally, that is, on iphoto, but I'm about to do that now, and I'll certainly report on this thread what my experiences were.
Thanks for "MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING" apple!!

  • IPhoto '08:"iPhoto Help" no longer "helps"

    Hi All:
I was looking for some help understanding some of the new editing functions in iPhoto '08, when I clicked on the "Help" menu in iPhoto, and then clicked on "iPhoto Help" submenu.
A small "iPhoto Help" window opened, but when I clicked on any of the subheadings in it, the subhead would be underlined briefly, and then the entire window would close. WHen I would try to run a search, nothing would be found; no matter what the search, even for something like "red eye," which I know is in there.
It seems like my iPhoto help function has been corrupted. In any event, it no longer works at all.
I remember there being a similar problem with the Mac Help in Tiger and there was a way to delete certain files and, in effect, rebuild the Mac Help function.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Does anyone know of a solution? Any and all help will surely be appreciated.
    Thanks.
    JDee

    Joe:
I know not if it was one of your suggested solutions -- the first of which I tried, the second of which I had already tried and the third of which I considered trying but did not -- or your calm, mellifluous manner of assistance, but regardless of the specifics, my issue is, indeed, solved. And you, mon ami, deserve the +ad hoc ergo propter hoc+ credit. Everything's working as it should, at least on the new MBP. The world, well that's an entirely different story, but at least there's change on the horizon, change I can believe in. Until then....
    Thanks, brah.

I went to search for a help topic in iPhoto and the only option it gave me was to "Download all iPhoto Help" and "Keyboard Shortcuts". I clicked on the "Download all iPhoto Help" and the screen in the help window went blank, then nothing happened... no indication that anything was downloading, nothing.
Why can't I get help to work? Any input appreciated, Thanks,

i deleted my events in iPhoto Help?  The "events" are not in the trash.  I did download stellar phoenix recovery but not sure what to do

i deleted my events in iPhoto Help?
You deleted them in iPhoto on your Mac?
If you do not have a backup of your iPhoto library, run the recovery program you downloaded, then reimport the folder with recovered photos into iPhoto.
You will probably have to weed out plenty of seemingly duplicates (thumbnails, previews, and original files), since the program will not be able to reconstruct your events, only find image files.

  • IPhoto Help Crashes

Hi. I'm running iPhoto 6.0.6 under Leopard on a Macbook. iPhoto help opens an "untitled" window and then crashes; Help works in all other applications (this is similar to the problem described in this earlier thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6057670&#6057670 ).
I have already tried the following:
    - Deleted help preference files from /Users/Your Name/Library/Preferences and re-ran the application
    - Deleted all iPhoto related files and reinstalled iPhoto from my install disks (twice)
Nothing has worked so far. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The crash report above says iPhoto 7.1 and it's up to 7.1.1 now.
If it created a new library no problem then is strongly suggests that your current library is damaged.
    Some things to try:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums back.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Camera date was wrong when I shot the pictures, so it inputted wrong in iPhoto - help me fix it?

Okay, first the basics: I'm using iPhoto '08 (version 7.1.5) - I know it's old as time but I'm always meaning to switch to Aperture so I keep not getting around to an upgrade My camera is a Nikon D5000.
Second, the problem: earlier this year I took my camera in for service. Since when I got it back (months later) it still had the same problem I'd handed it in for (and that had been the second time already), I had to get lawyers involved and all kinds of similar unpleasantness, so by the time they returned it supposedly fixed for good, I felt weary/disappointed enough by the entire experience that I just wanted to put it all behind me and start using the camera again. Except that as it turns out, the service center had left me with a nasty, sneaky little parting gift: they'd changed the date of the unit to about two years ago! (or maybe just failed to change it back if they reset the system or whatever).
Still unaware of this problem, and with no reason to suspect anything hinky since nothing like that'd ever happened before (not just with the Nikon's previous service session, but really with any service job on any device), I imported the shots to iPhoto.
Except when I went to look at them in my Events tab, they weren't at the bottom like I expected them to be! After a good deal of panicked searching, manually, through several thousand images (made even more stressful by the fact I'd already hit Delete Originals in complete confidence) I finally found them logged as having been taken in March and April of 2009 (instead of August-Sept '11). That's a huge problem for me, because by far the best way for me to get my hands on the photo or event I want, without having to put in loads of effort to tag everything, is the chronological thing.
So I was hoping there might be a way for me to change the date of those events to the correct ones.  I don't mind a convoluted round-about solution, but if it has too much under-the-hood stuff, I'll need very clear and detailed instructions to pull it off because I'm clueless about that. I would also prefer not to have to download any more software, but if it's the only way or even just the best way by some distance, I'll do that
    Thanks!

To elaborate a bit on Terence Devlin's excellent advice:
Select the images with the wrong date, then go to the menu
Photos -> Adjust Date and Time
and set the "Adjusted" Date to the correct date of the first image. All other images will have their date shifted by same offset. If you check the "Modify original files" button, then also the original files will have their date corrected, not only the current versions.

  • IPhoto reads wrong date of .mov file from iPhone 3GS...help!

    Hi all
    Need some help/advice please.
I have a bunch of files I am importing in to iPhoto that were initially downloaded to a windows laptop. I used Graphic Converter (GC) to successfully rotate and align the creation/modified dates so iPhoto reads the correct date. Now GC edits the .jpg and .avi file metadata fine, but wont edit .mov files from my iPhone? So now the iPhone videos are strewn all over the place in iPhoto compared to where they should be date-wise. Any ideas on how to fix this issue?
The .mov files in GC show the correct creation date, but iPhoto reads the actuals file's modified date instead of the internal creation date? So strange?
    Thanks
    Jared

iPhoto gets it's date and time from the Photos Exif metadata, not the file creation or modification dates. It will only use those if your photos have no Exif.
If you subsequently export these files then the created and modification dates a re very likely to change.
You can adjust the date and time rather more easily in iPhoto (Using either the Photos -> Adjust Date and Time and/or the Photos -> Batch Change commands) You can also write the corrected date and time to the Exif of the oriignals files, and export it along with the file in the future.
I'm not sure what's up with the dates on these mov files, but Movies don't have an Exif. You might want to check with the makers of Graphic Coverter for help.
You know that you can move pics and movies around inside iPhoto, right? Drag them from Event to Event?

  • IPhoto using wrong email to "share" photos

    Hi there,
I'm using my new macbook, and love it!
BUT, when using iPhoto for the very first time, I wanted to "share" a photo and clicked to email the photo.
I then had options to setup whatever email I had.  I opted for the Windows Live Account, but put in the wrong address.
Now each time I try to share a photo by email, it brings up this email account and will not send.  iPhoto will not let me edit the email address.
I tried in settings to add the correct account, and it let me, but iPhoto keeps bringing up the incorrect email and not giving me an option of choosing the correct one.
    Please help and thanks.

If that is supposed to be funny, it's not.
After INITIALLY setting up the wrong email ([email protected]) in iPhoto, I went into the Settings, Mail, Contacts and Calendars, and tried to setup the correct email ([email protected]).
In the Mail, Contacts and Calendars section, it does not show this incorrect @hotmail account, it only shows the new and correct @msn.com account.  So how can I delete the incorrect @hotmail.com account again?
There is NO option in iPhoto to select a different email account, it just opens a "new" email with the incorrect @hotmail.com account, so now I cannot send any photos to anyone via email as this @hotmail.com account doesn't actually exist.
I hope I am making my problem clear, can anyone out there help with this?
    Thank you.

  • IPhoto Help - photo and message issue

I am fairly new to using Apple products, so if this question or issue has already been covered please forgive me. Just point me to the link. I started iPhoto recently and its pretty fun, but I've been having a problem. When I attach a photo to a message and send it, the first email comes out the way it is supposed to. However, if I crop a completely different pic and again attach the photo to a message, the emailed pic and message reverts back to the card before (pic and words). Any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong or what to do to alleviate this problem? Thanks in advance.

It seems that the library system is more complicated than it needs to be.
I don't think so. When you bear in mind what iPhoto actually does it makes a lot of sense. Each folder has a specific role:
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
why there can't be a set of files (pictures), and a directory (info on sorting or categorizing the pictures)
The folders above each have their specific role to play. The "info on sorting or categorizing the pictures" is tracked in the database files. The good news here is that a single pic can be in 1, 10 or 100 albums with no extra copies of the files floating around.
Bluntly, you could simplify the library, but then iPhoto wouldn't work. If you want a simple folder of images, then don't use iPhoto. Pop your pics in a folder and use an Image Viewer. There are many available for the Mac.
Shouldn't there be a dialog box asking me how I want to burn the pictures?
Or, just a wild thought this, have you checked the Help?

  • IPhotos help please  re title

    Hi there,
Few questions. I have degenerative illness and doing this for family, not me. Needs to be done quick as I don't know what tomorrow brings.
After spending years scanning all family photos and putting them in folders and subfolders on Windows system, they have migrated over to iPhoto fine.
I've worked out that sub folders don't automatically show, which is so confusing on the iPhoto's screen "view" - as they are in folders but all over the place.
    1.  Worked out how to make album, and then folder  -  which is going to take me forever and a day to do, but will because important for me.Quicker way to do this? And can it change in "events" to look like albums? So 1986 will have one or maybe ten folders within it?
    2. I tagged photos with information i.e. grandfather's old home and address - looks like I am going to have to re-enter all that information. Yes? No?
    3. I don't wish to use faces, as waste of time, which I don't have - so many are wrong. Worked out how to stop that and have. But do wish to name the people in them, can I name tags or are tags simply colours.....?
    4. In Events if you open say an event it says in middle 1986 then has 12-08-1986 to 14-10-2014 (this is date I obviously migrated info across) - how can I change this second date as it is wrong.
    5. I know iPhotos has editing program, but wish to for one slightly better....any ideas? Not complex though, as I mentioned earlier, health and time are or relevance and some days can't see properly. Not costly either?
Thanks and hope you can help me someone out there in cyberspace.
I am loving my new iMac pro but having hiccups and learning process, but getting their slowly. Just really hope I don't have to reenter all info and wish they wouldn't just muck folders around by taking out the sub folders which are so relevant.
    Thanks,
    Belinda

    Afraid not.
But if the Photos have accurate Exif data on them then you can sort by date anyway, and make smart albums based on date.
    2. I tagged photos with information i.e. grandfather's old home and address - looks like I am going to have to re-enter all that information. Yes? No?
Depends on how you tagged it. If you used standard metadata then it will already be there. If you used non-standard then you will have a problem.
    3. I don't wish to use faces, as waste of time, which I don't have - so many are wrong. Worked out how to stop that and have. But do wish to name the people in them, can I name tags or are tags simply colours.....?
I'm not sure what you mean by "colours". Keywords are standard photo metadata that can be written to photos on export.
    4. In Events if you open say an event it says in middle 1986 then has 12-08-1986 to 14-10-2014 (this is date I obviously migrated info across) - how can I change this second date as it is wrong.
By changing the date on the photo(s) that are incorrect. (Photo Menu -> Batch Change)
    5. I know iPhotos has editing program, but wish to for one slightly better....any ideas? Not complex though, as I mentioned earlier, health and time are or relevance and some days can't see properly. Not costly either?
Slightly better in what way? In order of price here are some suggestions:
    Seashore (free)
    The Gimp (free)
    Graphic Coverter ($45 approx)
    Acorn ($50 approx)
    Pixelmator ($50 approx)
    Photoshop Elements ($75 approx)
There are many, many other options. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
    Best wishes.
