Is iPhoto really right for me???

Hello,
Not used a Mac since 1996 (5200). Intel has brought me back & so has Final Cut Studio.
Now...I have 44 years worth of scanned/electronic pics...all JPG's now. Over 40,000 pictures!!! I need FULL CONTROL over these just like I have on my VAIO. Also, I DON'T want to store these pics on my laptop or home drives...only on my raid & raid backup.
These pics are perfectly organized & I don't need a piece of software to change my folders. I scanned 38 years worth in 2000 so all of these even from 1962 are dated year 2000. Importing into iPhoto was a mess. Definately a novice program. Is there a way to have FULL control with this program? I DON'T need thumbnails. If not, please send me to another program...or they will ONLY be viewed on a PC platform from now on. There is now 44 folders with 12 montly subfolders for each month on the PC platform...& I want to keep them in their respective folders.
Reason for using A program. Viewing, printing, modifying, pictures...with slideshows. I'd like to have the pic name under every pic...if wanted while viewing. Should I trash iPhoto....OR, can I make it work...otherwise these MACS will only see moving pictures with FCP>

Thanks for the response! I see that the people of Hawaii are really using Mac. I would like to hang up this PC thing (like I thought would happen 10 years ago), but, as long as these programs are packaged separately, I would be forced to replace all of my busines stuff.
You are right about the slideshow. But, is there a way NOT to have to select all the photos to get a contact sheet for each folder...then show them in the order I want by just clicking an arrow. XP allows you to go through each pic WITHOUT having to select all. Also, when you have a pic icon instead of list, you will see the shift button will not help you select all. In normal icon/list mode the shift however does work.
This goes back to ease of use of Mac software. It is my opinion that Microsoft is working harder, but Mac is not. The drop down menus for the most basic things sometimes take forever to find in many mac programs.
Take for instance Final Cut Pro (the reason I HAD to buy a Mac). If you lose a window, you can go back to the top and select View:Standard. Sounds easy huh...I have used this command so many times & every single time I do, it is hard to find. My wife pulls her hair out every time she loses a window & has to use this command. It is so BASIC...very needed...why isn't it at the top?(no I still refuse to memorize these keyboard shortcuts...takes up too much of my brain memory...also reminds me of DOS!!!)
As far as me being a power user...OK...I expect very much from all of the new programs. I try to use every feature of not just the programs but the operating system also. Computers are still too complicated for the general public. Working for IBM from '83-85, I should be able to figure all of this out...however, even for me & my internet help, it takes days...even for basic functions (PC & MAC). I stopped writing code in the 80's because it was getting so good commercially....however, I am seeing a slow down in ease of use. Computers are still too complicated...if you don't think so, try losing a .DLL file some time...OUCH!!!
One more thing...the cross platform stuff like MS office...Mac & PC files still don't mesh perfectly. Also, why doesn't Mac feel the need to write to NTFS...it is NICE that we can read it now though. Fat 32...4 GB limit really hurts in these big video files.

  • My iPhoto WIsh List for '07

Just sent the following to Apple's iPhoto Feedback; figured I'd post same here just for the heck of it. Many of these feature requests might only apply to my particular (and peculiar?) workflow, but I suspect at least a few of them might strike an empathetic chord...
    One User's iPhoto Wish List:
Your first priority is to contact the creators of iPhoto Diet and iPhoto Library Manager, pay them lots of money for their work, and then incorporate all the features of their shareware apps into iPhoto itself.
This would add to iPhoto features it should have had for a long time now, including:
    1) An option to delete unrotated originals.
It's silly to take up space on a hard drive with copies of files whose only difference is that one is correctly rotated and the other is not. Give us the choice to dispense with the unrotated ones.
    2) An option to delete the originals for any selected file(s).
I know that "always keeping a copy of the original" is a sacred cornerstone of the iPhoto app, but SOMETIMES, after I've edited, resized, or done whatever to a given file, I feel I've created the new master file, and I truly really honestly would like the ability to just dispose of the now redundant original and get the space back on my hard drive.
(If this sounds like giving the user of a "consumer app" too much control, by all means bury this kind of option behind all the Advanced Tabs and all the Warning Dialogs you want -- but please at least give us the option to manage what we ultimately keep or don't keep in our iPhoto Libraries.)
    3) Ways to manage multiple libraries on multiple machines with multiple users.
I have a 12GB (and growing) iPhoto Library on my G5 PowerMac. My wife's G5 iMac has a subset of that Library (about half the size), with the same Roll designations, Comments info, and Keyword assignments, along with some of the same Albums plus some unique Albums. I use iPhoto Library Manager to do this, but I should be able to do it using iPhoto itself.
Especially since the introduction of OS X, Apple has encouraged the notion of multiple users on multiple Macs. iPhoto needs to embrace that world view, and make the sharing and management of multiple iPhoto Libraries, even different versions of the same Library on different machines, a fluid, user-friendly, and fully-integrated process. For instance, I should be able to select which images, Rolls, and/or Albums from my Library get copied to my wife's machine (with all Comments, Roll info and Keywords intact) -- AND whether or not those copies include the corresponding original files or not.
    Other features iPhoto needs:
    4) Ability to correct and change the actual EXIF date/time info.
One example: It is extremely common to get jpegs from other users who haven't bothered to correctly set the date/time menu on their digital cameras. You want to correct that info, but if you do that in iPhoto's Info pane, and then Export that image and in turn Import it into another iPhoto Library, the Date/Time reverts back to the original INCORRECT setting. This is really annoying, and I feel like it's insulting my intelligence. (When I change the date of a photo, THAT'S the date I should now be able to search for by using the calendar mode, NOT its incorrect "creation" date.)
The current workaround of having to export the file, use another app like Graphic Converter to really change the exif data, then re-import into iPhoto (after first deleting the originals), then recreate all your Comments and Album arrangements, is clumsy, time-consuming, and when you think about it, absurd.
PLEASE consider a User Pref to the effect of "Changing Date/Time info changes original exif data as well"? You could have it unchecked as the default; you could have all sorts of "do you really want to do that?" warnings pop up when a user does check it -- but please just give us the option!
    5) Better User Pref options.
Give us the choice to NOT create a dupe original when a file is viewed in an external editor but no changes are made; likewise when just rotating an image within iPhoto.
    6) Better sorting/display options.
I display my library in Rolls (each Roll being pictures taken on a particular day or at a particular event). I'd like the ability to designate how files are sorted within a particular Roll -- the pictures in some Rolls sorted by file name, the pictures in other Rolls sorted by Date & Time.
Would also like to be able to insert dividers in the Source pane to separate some of my albums into different groups, as well as a way to set bookmarks or placeholders within a Library, as a quick shortcut to an often-viewed section for example.
    7) More e-mail attachment options.
Within each of the Small, Medium, Large, and Actual Size choices, there should also be (perhaps under an Advanced tab) a sliding scale of jpg quality, with an instant feedback showing what the total file size will be at that particular setting.
Also, there should be four checkboxes: one for Image Name, one for Date, one for Time, and especially one for Comments -- allowing the user to determine which of those four bits of iPhoto info are included in the e-mail attachment along with the image itself.
    8) Option to have Comments included in Captions for online albums.
Those same four checkboxes also need to be options for any kind online album posting. It's crazy that right now I can't put up an iWeb photo page that automatically includes the Comments I've taken the time to enter in iPhoto as part of that photo's Caption online.
    9) Option to show file extension in Title
Including or not including the .jpg or .psd or .gif extension is an option when Exporting a file; why not when displaying it as well?
    10) Option to "show all layers" of an imported Photoshop file.
Or any kind of layered file which has been imported into the iPhoto Library.
    11) Ability to enter partial dates.
It often happens when you import an older scanned photo into your library (or even when you're just sent a recent photo from a friend), you don't know know the exact date and/or time the picture was originally taken. iPhoto really needs a way to enter partial, approximate or estimated dates -- just the month/year without a specific day, for example -- both in the Info pane AND in Batch Change mode.
(Also wouldn't mind a user pref option to display the Time without the seconds.)
    12) Ability to Import pictures into an already selected Roll.
There are many times when I'd like to be able to select a particular Roll, then Import some new pics directly into that Roll -- rather than doing the Import, then having to drag the images sometimes several months back in time to drop them into the correct Roll.
    13) Ability to delete files from an Album and the Library simultaneously.
This would be some sort of Option-Delete command, where a selected image being viewed in a particular Album is ALSO removed and sent to the Trash from the Library as well -- with the appropriate warning dialog, of course.
    14) Built-in support for doing INCREMENTAL back-ups of either your entire Library -- or only the files from selected Albums -- to another hard drive.
I hope that most of these features have already been incorporated into the next release of iPhoto -- and if not, that you'll give serious consideration to implementing them as soon as possible. Your users will thank you.
    John Bertram
    Toronto

should add ability to scan directly to iphoto.
How would I give this wish to apple?
Note that under the Application Menu (in other words, in iPhoto under the bold Menu item called "iPhoto", right next to the blue Apple icon), there's a selection called Provide iPhoto Feedback. Clicking on that opens your default browser (if it's not already open), and sends you to the specific Apple webpage set up to receive user suggestions for that particular app.
In this case, the URL is the one "Old Toad" mentioned in his post:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html
Many of the major Apple apps have this direct menu link; for others you can just go to http://www.apple.com/feedback/ and navigate from there.
They claim to actually pay attention to this kind of user input; and I've heard people say it actually does affect how the development and implementation of new features get prioritized.
    Let's hope so, anyway.

  • Which version of iPhoto you need for streaming?

I have an iPhone 4, with iOS 5, streaming active. But there is no streaming of pictures towards my Mac. I read the explanations, the help pages in iCloud and Apple doesn't mention at all which version of iPhoto you need for this feature. It's sure that in the Sources I don't have "Streaming", as I can see in their image. I have iPhoto 8.1.2 and OS 10 6.8.

Hi, thanks for the answer, but iCloud works on my Mac with Snow Leopard.
From Safari I can access through icloud.com to Calendar, Contacts, Mail, iWork and Find my iPhone. Actually I don't have iWork for the iPhone, so I can't really use it, and I didn't activate Mail (in my iPhone), because all my accounts are IMAP and messages are saved forever.
Well, the only other thing that interested me was Streaming (so is it called in Italian, but you are right, in the English version of the help pages it is called Photo Stream).
I'm aware that the version of iPhoto that I need for that feature must be more recent than mine, but I still hope that there is a version of iPhoto which supports Photo Stream and requires only Snow Leopard. I think that after iLife 9 (my version) there is directly iLife 11 (the present version), and I know it requires only 10.6.3 and not Lion. If Photo Stream is supported by iLife 11 and iLife 11 requires 10.6.3.... But perhaps there is an exception for some features, like Photo Stream. I would like to know...
I don't want to update to Lion, it is a slow system.
    Thanks again

  • Is the IPad right for me

    hi guys,
i am trying to figure out if the ipad is right for me. i very much want one, but it seems to me that there are several reasons that it won't work for me.here is my situation: i travel a lot for work, so it would be in my best interest to consolidate how much i have to pack with me when i travel. right now i have to bring my 15' mbp with me wherever i go. i must have internet access for my job. since i spend a lot of time in hotel rooms, i have transferred most of my movie collection to a portable external hard drive that i bring with me....its about 600gb of data.
    so here are my questions:
    1) is there a way the ipad can access the movies on the external hard drive?
    2) most hotels have wireless, but there are some i stay at that only have wired internet in the rooms
    3) i have 64 gb itouch and an amazon kindle already, so is there any reason to get a ipad considering that i have major problems with the fact that the 3G plans aren't unlimited, and so if i only got the wireless version, i would basically have the itouch with a book reader (which i already have).
i very much want the ipad, i just am not sure if there are solutions to those problems above. i really don't want to get into jailbreaking the thing because i don't want to void the warranty, so i know that takes away some possibilities right there. any advice anyone can offer would be appreciated. thanks!!

thanks for the response julian, and to answer your question, of course i don't NEED the 600gb of movies, haha, but WANTING is something different, right ..... to be honest, no, i don't need all that, but sometimes i am on the road for 7-10 days, and i don't watch tv really, so its nice to be able to have anything i need in the area of movies. as for the airport express, i just found that solution as well, and i already have an airport express at home, so then is it possible just to create a wireless network if need be in the hotel room? i havent done that before.

  • Is Arch Linux right for me?

Arch seems like a pretty awesome distro, and I think I would like it a lot. But is it right for me?
I was first introduced to Linux and Unix-based systems last summer when I took a course at my local community college. Since then, I have installed Ubuntu on my HP laptop. In the past months, I have learned and taught myself a lot about the way linux works: downloading and installing software, Unix command line prompt, etc.
Ubuntu is a fantastic distro for linux beginners, but I feel like I'm ready to take the next step and I'm always itching to see a little more of what goes on behind the scenes. I read a guide on Arch over at LifeHacker and skimmed the "Getting Started" guide on Arch Wiki and I generally understood everything that was going on; nothing seemed way over my head. So I think I could handle Arch. What do you guys think?
If you think I should take Arch for a spin, is it practical to install it as my main OS on my main machine? Should I dual-boot it next to Ubuntu or similar? I am planning on building a PC this summer and am currently debating over which OS to use; Arch is a main candidate. My main uses for this computer will be surfing the net, listening to music (integration with my iPod would be great), a little video editing, some casual gaming, and general programming/tinkering with my computer.
I know y'all probably get a lot of these but I appreciate your feedback.

Check out the Beginner's Guide and The Arch Way in the wiki.  It's important to note that what really distinguishes Arch from most other distros is that it isn't a distro in the most common sense of the term.  Ubuntu, Fedora, SuSE, Sabayon, Mandriva, PCLOS, etc. have graphical installers that pre-configure everything for you;  the choices are made for you, and you'll have to work around anything you don't find to your liking. You can easily add and remove programs, but always limited by what they've provided: packages that are patched in order to work in the way they've deemed appropriate, and an init system that's opaque to users (remember the fuss over certain graphics drivers not rendering Plymouth splashes correctly?  I've never had that issue in Arch).  Arch, on the other hand, is essentially a set of tools--the Arch Installation Framework, a couple init scripts, about six config files (give or take), repos, the ABS tree, the kernel and a package manager--that allow a user to craft their own operating system to their liking.  A couple of the things I just mentioned are even optional as it is; at least three of those config files have never been touched by me, as I don't need them.  Combine this sense of freedom and control with the DIY philosophy (which I find empowering as well, but hell--I enjoy research, learning and problem solving) and the close-knit community, and you've got my favorite distro.  Ultimately, it's the choices of the developers that make a distro what it is; the software--at least in principle--rarely changes.  In the case of Arch, most everything comes straight from upstream, goes in the testing repo briefly, then ends up in the standard repo, only altered if deemed necessary for security or basic functionality.
I left Ubuntu after switching to KDE and finding Kubuntu not to my liking;  I also found that many of the "conveniences" of Ubuntu (and the 9-12 other distros I tried afterward) just got in the way.  For example, why use the Ubuntu USB Startup Disk Creator or Unetbootin when "dd" is faster and easier?  How much frustration could I have avoided installing the Catalyst driver in Ubuntu or SuSE if I'd done so manually (with a number of console commands I can count on one hand) rather than mess around with a GUI, thus knowing exactly what I did wrong?  To me, it just seems better to start with what I absolutely need and build up piecemeal, rather than add a bunch of crap I don't need/want/even know is there in the first place and hide it all behind extra GUI's, then try and pick it apart.  Ultimately, you make Arch what you want it to be.  No one can tell you if it's right for you, or if you should install it (there are rare cases where folks here would flat-out say "No," but yours doesn't seem to be one of 'em ).  Check out those wiki articles I mentioned;  if it seems like something that interests you, give it a whirl!

Can synced photos on my iPad be sent back to my Mac? I lost pics in my iPhoto file needed for a presentation.

And of course I forgot about the built in way to send them back to the Mac .... Email them. You can email up to 5 photos at at time.
Launch the photos app, while looking at the photos in thumbnail view - tap the arrow icon in the upper right corner - tap on up to 5 photos at a time - Tap the Share button in the upper left corner - tap email from the resulting window.

  • One connection user with full rights for a bunch of schemas

How can I give all rights of one user to another without declaring each object privilege one by one? For my application I would like to devide the data to maintain into four different schemas to. Never the less I would like to connect to the db by one account and have full access to all of the four schemas. My client denies to give the connect user DBA rights. The connection user is not allowed to have "ANY" grants, either. But my application often creates tables, views etc. and drops it when they aren't usefull any more. So it is nearly impossible to manage the grants on each db object one by one. So, how can I give a user all rights for a bunch of others?

My program uses logical "firms" to allow separation of clients client data. Sounds like Row Level Security - or even Views - would be saving you some grief here.
The most dynamic created tables are used to optimize performance for (sub-)queries builded at runtime by the user. Do you really have benchmarks to prove that building tables through dynamic execution of DDL results in faster response times than plain queries? Are the query structures some various that temporary tables won't do?
    Cheers, APC

  • Concept of Logic (right for me?)

I've had Logic for a couple months, but only dug into it the last couple weeks. (may just not have put
enough time into it) I don't plan to record too much of my own music other than piano, I tried to get
into this because I wanted to make hip/hop - electriconica - trance beats. But now I'm starting to
wonder if I should have went with reason over Logic. I love Logic simply because it's an apple product,
but I feel the other programs are more suited for my genre, with samples and such.
    -appreciated

Brandon if you can't do those genres on Logic ... then I dare say there is nothing out there for you...my biggest complaint is that pretty much all of the tutorial videos out there for logic are done by guys that do this kind of music, and I'm more of a rock/pop kind of guy. If that's what you want to do then you got the right software..
I would really recommend you go to macprovideo.com and get the Logic 101 tutorial well worth the money... and will get you from I'm not sure if Logic is right for me to **** I love this software, it's amazing, given the kind of music you want to make... from there you will likely want to purchase some of the other Logic based videos as your skill level increases.. but that is the one to start with ..
And I too, coming to Mac a year ago after about 14 or 15 years on PC have to agree .. I love all things apple now... I think the long time apple users don't realize how good they have it...

My iPhoto hangs right after it opens - i can open it remotely but not on my main machine

Before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. With information, s/he may be able to get your issue resolved sooner.

  • GB for Audio Editing - Is this right for me?

I'm brand new to MAC, and produce a podcast. I have been using a PC and Adobe Audition for a while for my editing.
GB looks great for multi-track MIXING, but for editing, I'm totally lost. The majority of what I need to do is to cut small pieces out (the silence, the 'ummmms', etc) and sometimes I need to do this on a single side of the channel (left or right). Or better yet, split the left & right channels and edit them separately.
None of this seems possible, and if it is, I can't find any instructions or tutorials on any of it.
I record completely outside of the computer, using a pair of condenser mics, a compressor, a mixer and a samson zoom H4 recorder which records a single stereo track, one mic on the left, one on the right.
After recording I will pull the file over to a computer via a SD mem card. The files are in .wav format.
Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. I know that in GB I could record directly to it, but that isn't an option. I need it for editing an audio file...
    TIA.
    -Jeff

Thanks. Kinda ***** as I was double-whammied when I found out that Audition wasn't available on mac and now GB won't really work for me.
Good news though is that I found an app that looks like it'll work for what I need and it's reasonable. "Sound Studio" for a mere $80...
    Thanks again.

  • IPad right for me?

    Hi everyone,
I am looking for some advice on whether an iPad would be right for me.
I run the IT and support side of a small company that requires me to:
    1. Connect remotely to Windows PCs & Servers using Remote Desktop or Teamviewer.
    2. Communicate with remote devices using UDP and also to ping them (the UDP part can be achieved connecting to a Windows system).
    3. Usual small business stuff like proposals, presentations, e-mailing, etc.
    4. MS document support.
I'm looking for a portable device that has WiFi and 3G and that is portable enough to keep with me at most times. I recently purchased an iPod Touch and am completely blown away by almost every aspect of the product. It already allows me to a lot of the above, except that it lacks 3G support.
As a result, I've been considering the iPad. From a usability and stability point of view, I have no doubt it will perform well. BUT, it is a little pricey and it has virtually the same footprint as a Netbook, i.e. not really that easy to carry around all the time.
The iPhone is another option, but I'd have to buy one outright online as I already have an existing contract on a BlackBerry (if only I'd considered Apple).
Do any of you have any recommendations and advice?
    Thanks,
    Checco

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
You can do any of the functions the iPod will do with the iPad...infact there is an entire knowledge base article on iPad in the enterprise. Quick search should turn up all the info you could want in that area. There have also been a number of threads recently from people doing what you want to do and how they have worked around some of the issues.

  • Is Arch right for me?

    I'm currently using Ubuntu.
I switched from Windows to Linux bout 9 months ago.
The main reason I want to switch to Arch is because it is said to be much more simple and lightweight, which is exactly what I want.
I'm not very good with the terminal and shell, but I'm willing to do some extra learning if I need to for Arch.
I'm slowly getting into computer programming too.

True, but once you try Arch, are you really that likely to keep hopping?

You've got to be kidding me. This is the 37,529th thread like this. If you honestly don't know after doing some actual research, then no.
In your opinon. And If you're going to be a condescending ass about it, than keep your opinion to yourself.
On the flip side of that, T2manner, weasel8 is technically correct. A quick search of the forums would have brought you a plethora of information on the subject at hand. I'll assume you didn't search because it just didn't occur to you (shit happens, oh well) and point you to the search page for future reference.
I hope that you decide to at least give us a decent shot, and I guarantee that once you get past the initial anticipation and hesitations, you'll grow to love Arch as much as the rest of us do. If you do have issues, the Beginners Guide and wiki are great resources, as are the forums. If you have further difficulties, feel free to stop by our room on IRC (if you don't know how to get there, read this).
Best of luck and let me know what happens!

You can download the trial version (http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/acrobat-downloads.html) to convert the PDF back to WORD if you do not have the original. The conversion may not be perfect, but it is typically better than starting from scratch. You may be lucky and get a good result. You might check the settings (in the save screen) to try retain format versus retain text flow. The format version can be a pain to edit since it creates a bunch of text boxes. The flow version may require you to reformat in WORD, but you likely would want to do that anyway.
