Actually, iMovie/iDVD should create excellent DVDs! They're terrific programs -- and Final Cut Express is also excellent, if a bit hard to learn.
I've been seguing from using Premiere Elements on my PC to using it on my iMac, and I love it on Mac! Premiere Elements 9 runs very well on my computer running Snow Leopard.
I'd definitely recommend downloading the trial and giving it a test drive.

In Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes". (no quotes)
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.
    If it does contain data...

No. Your iMac only has DVI video connection. You would need an iMac with Thunderbolt.

  • Mac OS 9 still good for the year 2006?

Hi, I was just wondering if Mac OS 9 would be good OS to keep up with today`s computer demands...
I am buying the PowerBook Pismo but I dont think it will run very well on OS X...
does anyone know if Mac OS 9 is still good?

Hi, iBTO. Mac OS 9 still does everything it did in 2000-2001, just as well as it did then. All the software you might have wanted to run in OS 9 back then, you can run in OS 9 now. What you can't do in OS 9 is run software that's been written since then to run in OS X, or view web sites that require support for newer security features, newer multimedia browser plug-ins, or newer browser versions.
The Pismo, especially the 500MHz version, will run Panther (OS X 10.3.x) or Tiger (10.4.x) quite acceptably — much better than your iBook would — if it has at least 512MB of RAM and a big, fast hard drive installed. The original 4200 RPM 6,10, and 12GB hard drives that shipped in most Pismos are too small to be very practical for use with Panther or Tiger; the 6GB drive is really out of the question. The 20GB 4200 RPM drive that some later Pismos shipped with is the minimum adequate drive for Panther or Tiger use by anyone who expects to save any significant amount of digital music, video or photos; most OS X users will soon outgrow a 20GB drive. If the Pismo you're buying has a 6, 10 or 12 GB drive now, and you'd like to be able to use iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie or any combination thereof, get yourself a 5400 RPM 60GB or 80GB hard drive and at least one 512MB RAM module for it, and you'll probably be pretty happy running OS X on it for a year or two, for a comparatively small initial investment. Or for a really minimal investment, you can keep running your five-year-old software indefinitely on it, in OS 9.

  • Keeping number of files in check is good for your Mac

I just did what I thought was impossible - reduced the space on my hard drive from 2.6GB to 11GB! The Mac is flying again, hard drive is hardly audible, I am not missing anything useful, all the projects with roughs from stage 1 through 40 have been consolidated into a few examples, copies and back-ups of copies for "just in case" during a project have gone, and gems of ideas have been organised properly into present and future projects.
I may sound like a totally disorganised worker, but not really, I can quickly find what I need, didnt really come across anything I had no recollection of, but I just fell into the trap of "whatever the size of your bin the rubbish will accumulate accordingly".
So now I have 28GB of pure hard drive data to clone to a wiped external drive and I am looking forward to being able to back up incrementally with quality files instead of dross for that rainy day.
It makes me wonder how much useless data other people are struggling long with, and is the upcoming trend for unlimited storage with Google and Amazon S3 services really needed?

    lfdc:
Good for you. Getting rid of un-needed material is an excellent way to free up disk capacity. And backing up to an external FW HDD or archiving on CD or DVD, conserves more space. The graphic interface permits quite sophisticated filing systems so that even if one has a lot of data is can be organized in a way so it can be easily accessed. For example I have on major folder called DATA, in which I have nested folders, one of which e.g. is Financial. In this I have other Folders such as Taxes, Investments etc. The investment folder can is further broken into the Brokerage firms, and each of those in individual accounts, and each account with Bought and Sold for transaction statements. In this way, even with large masses of data it is easily accessible if you know exactly where it should be. Of course, every now and then something gets saved in the wrong place and that breaks the monotony trying to find it.
Incidentally, in your first sentence you said,"reduced the space on my hard drive from 2.6GB to 11GB!" I think you meant it the other way around (I hope).
    Good luck.

  • 1.67 G4, Still good for today?

I am quite new to macs, (well earlier this year I got an intel imac, but the last time i had a mac was in the system 7 days).
I am very happy with the performance of the intel chips (hi def video editing is very fast and smooth), A friend of mine has a dual processor G5 pro and his performance for daily usage is just fine and snappy.
I am looking into getting a G4 powerbook 1.67Ghz with 2GB ram, superdrive 128MB 9700 ATI card etc etc. The prices are good, the computers look nice and I have seen one with a year left on the applecare. This is kinda for me and also for my girlfriend who I am trying to convert (she loves making home DVD's for her friends, she has a Windows Vista based laptop and we have been having so much trouble completing projects on it, ie, having to do the actual DVD creation on my imac using iDVD). (no hi-def stuff, just putting videos together using photos and a sony T7 digicam)
I want to know how well it'll stand up for what I want to use it for, the GPU is adequate I think, about the same as a 9600 on a desktop. But these old G4's, do they still cut it? I don't want a lot of muscle, the most intensive stuff she does is that video editing, the rest is just photos, internet and email. But I just want to be sure that it won't be slow or laggy (need to make her a convert as she is wary of switching to a new OS).
Also, I want to have the OS setup in Japanese OS. when I setup my imac, i had the choice of any language, so assume that if I buy a US used model, I can have it in Japanese also. Keyboard doesn't matter, just the language of the OS. Am I correct that I can buy a US mac and have it in any language?
Oh, and the Mac I am looking at is around $800.
    Thx.

You cannot renew Applecare beyond 3 years, possibly you can find some other service program which covers repairs when Applecare expires. The only time I've heard of Apple providing a new computer under warranty is when they can't repair a significant problem after a number of tries.
I own the next to the last model of PB (before Hi-rez screen and dual layer drive) and it has lots of juice and horsepower to go. You can see the specs below. I do audio and video editing, amongst other things, and have no concerns with it's ability to handle them. It's not a dual processor G5, but it's not a slouch either.
For buying a used Powerbook, I would want to run the Apple hardware test, or one of the TechTool programs, to ensure a clean bill of health, before buying it. The Apple hadware test is on the first OS X disc that comes with the machine (if the system you're looking at doesn't have any discs with it, Apple will sell you a new set for around $50). Since it has Applecare, you can download TechTool Deluxe from Apple for no charge.
And yes, you can choose the language.

  • Is CS5 upgrade still available for a Mac?

I am thinking of getting an Intel Mac as the software on my G5 PPC Mac is showing its age.
I have CS4, which will run on an Intel, but would like to upgrade to CS6; unfortunately Adobe say the upgrade price for CS6 only applies to CS5 and CS5.5.
Which means if I want CS5 I need to get CS5 as an upgrade from CS4 and then go for CS6.
The question is then - can this still be done?
I can't find a relevant answer in the Adobe documentaion.

Not officially from Adobe. Adobe and authorised resellers wil lonyl sel lcurrent versions and you'd have to find used copies, make sure it's legit, run through all the song and dance of Transfer an Adobe product license and then some... Honestly, as much as you may dislike the idea of software rental, seriously consider Creative Cloud. it would be a lot less troublesome and they'l leven give you a discount for the first year based on your CS4 license.

  • Is this RAM good for my Mac Mini?

Mini is the 2.3 GHz i5 (mid 2011). I've currently got the 2 gb RAM that came with it. Will upgrading to 8 gb make it a heck of a lot faster or not a huge difference? Also, will upgrading to 4 gb or 8 gb be better, or is there like a cap where once you go above the amount of RAM it doesn't really affect the Mac.
Here is the one I'm thinking of buying
    http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0374837
Will that work on my mini?
    Thanks.

With a mid-2011 mini,  assume you have Lion installed. Many have reported that 2GB, which is the Lion minimum, is enough to turn the lights on but not enough to get any real performance out of Lion. 4GB seems to be the practical amount of memory to have a reasonably capable Lion system. Beyond that, it depends, as noted above, on what you run.  So, 2GB to 4GB in a Lion system you may see some real performance improvements.  4GB to 8GB and any benefit will depend on what and how much you run.
I like Crucial memory, as I've used it for years in a number of systems with no issues. 8GB for your mini is $46.  They are at http://www.crucial.com . They have free shipping in the US, and you can usually find a 5% off coupon on retailmenot.com. Another source is OWC at http://www.macsales.com. They sell Samsung as well as their own branded memory, and have a good reputation. I've bought Samsung memory from them, again with no issues.

  • Is a PowerBook G4 still good for what I need it for? 17" 1.67 Ghz CPU, 2GB RAM. Need for word processing, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, Sculptris, other programming software., Internet browsing, and light video editing.

Powerbook G4 1.67 ghz, 2Gb ram, OS X 10.5 Leopard. Is it good enough for word processing, Dreamweaver, flash, sculptris, some programming software, Internet browsing, and some basic video editing? It also includes iLife and iWork, what is actually included in these packages?

This is the fastest of the G4 Powerbooks which was a good performer when it was new. Graphics intense programs will not perform well by todays standard. In addition the up to date software programs need an Intel processor and more RAM. iLife includes iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand. iWork includes Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.

  • Still waiting for up to date to be shipped?

I was curious to whether or not any other people are still waiting for their Mac OS X Leopard "up to date" cd to be shipped. I ordered mine on the 23rd and it still hasn't even been prepared for shipment at this time. I have spoken to a customer service manager but the issue with my order escaped her. She was going to be contacting her supervisor to see if they could see what was going on. She said I should expect a call back tomorrow.
I am being patient about the wait as i figure supply is exceeding demand, but I know of two people who purchased the "up to date" upgrade in the days after mine, and their cd's have already shipped.
Has your "up to date" shipped or are you still waiting. When did you order the CD?

I have ordered mine on 16th Oct..on the website it says shipped on 25th but its not here yet..:(
I called Apple thrice. The tracking number they provided is no good as they have shipped it using regular mail. Once they said it is going to take 5 days to be here in canada. Then a crazy sales rep gave me few instructions how to install leopard instead of actually finding out what happened to my shipment. The third time they said there has been "some problems with some of the DVDs" so they cancelled the initial shipment and are waiting for the new disks to become available for shipment....whatever that means. He said he will get back to me via email in 1 hour....it has been 2 days already ! They have charged my credit card and the tracking site shows an invoice with all the number and stuff...Strange behavior from Apple...

  • Is Skype good for business?

I came across some disgruntled comments ... that's why I want to know if Skype is still good for businss ...

You get everything you need for conversations in one app—IM, audio and video calls, online meetings and sharing. And because Skype for Business and Office work together, it’s simple to collaborate right from your Office apps. You’ll see the contact card of everyone working in the same app as you so you can quickly send them an IM or email, or start a call. You can also schedule meetings and see IM history in Outlook, and start meetings from apps like Word and PowerPoint to present whatever you’re working on. Sourced from: Skype

  • Mac Pro 2012

I bought a new mac pro 2012-12 core w/12GB memory. I like to add 2-4GB memory sticks. In which slots should I install the 2-4GB memory sticks?
    Thank you,
    Richard

I bought 4-8GB memory sticks from OWC for the mac pro 2012. Installed the 8GB mem stick in slot 1,2,3,4 and the 2GB mem sticks in slot 5,6,7 and 8. booted up the mac pro and got memory slot utility message. Should install the 8GB sticks in slots 1,2,5,6 and fill the rest the 2GB sticks. Did that that and booted up the mac pro however it took over a min to boot up and thats with a SSD drive. It took about 1 min to load FCPX and it woould take forver to render. Tested the memory, tested OK . Took out the memory and reinstalled the 2GB sticks in slots 1,2,3,5,6 and 7. Rebooted the MP STRTED RIGHT UP AS DID FCPX. Sent memory back to OWC, got a refund and bought 2-4GB memory sticks from the apple store. I just want to make sure I install them in the right slots.
    Thank you,
    Richard
