Is iPod multi-lingual (English and Chinese simultaneously)?

On my iCal and Addressbook on my Mac I have some entries in Chinese, while the rest is either in Finnish or English. Will the iPod (especially Nano) be able to show the entries correctly; that is, even if the language is set to English (or Finnish if possible) will the entries in Chinese be shown correctly?
Second question: Do the attached notes made in iCal (calendar and tasks) show in the iPod, or does the iPod only show the topic and time?

I found an article from Apple Support (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61894) stating:
"By default all note files are considered to be encoded in Latin1, unless the iPod language preference is set to Japanese, Korean, or traditional or simplified Chinese, in which case all note files are assumed to be in that encoding.
Note: You can tag a note file with a different encoding by including the following line: <?xml encoding="MacJapanese"?>
iPod handles these encodings: Latin1, MacRoman, MacJapanese, Korean, simplified Chinese, traditional Chinese, UTF8 Unicode and UTF16 Unicode.
The only way to display multiple encodings in the same note is to use Unicode."
So that means, if I interpret it correctly, that by adding a tag saying the text (including both Chinese and English) is in Unicode, iPod will display it correctly?
(And aren't text created with Macs' inbuilt TeXt editor automatically in Unicode format?)
How about the Calender and Address Book; if they contain both Chinese and English, will they be displayed correctly on iPod (are those applications on iPod automatically Unicode-savvy?)?

  • Entering and Displaying English and chinese

    We are running Oracle 8i on a w2k server and have w2k clients
    configured to enter and view English, Simplified and Traditonal
    Chinese. Oracle is setup with UTF8. We atn to be able to enter
    and display both english and chinese characters simultaneous in
    the forms as we enter data as well as in reports. Everything is
    done in Oracle forms/reports 6. I have tried various nls
    settings but nothing seems to work to provide both entry and
    viewing of the characters as well as providing properly
    formatted reports.

    I also have a customer that is having a similar problem. The
    general issue is that the customer wants to use Win2000 in
    English but within a Forms 6.0 application fill in certain fields
    with Simplified Chinese characters. I think they had difficulty
    getting it to work even if the default is all Chinese, that is
    both the Windows locale default and the NLS settings. We're
    mostly beyond that but the real goal is to allow the user to run
    in English (but with language supplement support available for
    Chinese) then when the user hits the appropriate fields in the
    application he toggles to a Chinese characters to input. So we
    can't seem to find the right combination of NLS settings,
    patches, etc. that would support this.
    At one point we apparently were able to have the application
    accepting the Chinese characters but to do so meant that many of
    the Oracle Forms default menu items, dialogue buttons and
    message bar were displayed in Chinese.
    The simplest explanation: allow to run Forms 6 app in English.
    Allow storing of Chinese characters into fields at the will
    of the user. Database stores characters correctly. Application
    (Forms) echoes characters correctly , not ???? or boxes .
    We need to have a definite answer to the customer within 2 weeks
    meaning we either have a fix now for their current ISO 9000
    certified application based on Forms 6.0 or we know through
    testing that it absolutely will work when we rev. the application
    to Forms 6i. The latter revision of their application is not due
    to ship until mid-2002.
    Any suggestions or referrals are appreciated.

  • How to make English and Chinese pdf files searchable?

    I have scanned many A4 English and Chinese print-outs into pdf format.  How to make these files searchable ? People mention about the OCR issue. Will the installation of Adobe make life easy and manageable?

    I know Acrobat does Japanese OCR very well; I can only assume that it works for Chinese as well.
    P.S. I just checked: Chinese (Simplified) and Chinese (Traditional) are both language selection options for OCR.

  • English and Chinese characters in a FIle

    Hi,
    I need to read a file from application server and create a idoc with that data. But, the File may sometime contain a mix of English and Chinese Characters as below.
    File at application server is as below format:
    #####û´##û³##úÊ##þÎñÓ#######MR###õ###########ø°####ò²#####7588##7590##200000
    The file has six fix fields separated by ''. But when I move these fields in six variables, in 4th variable the value comes as '#õ###########ø°####ò²#####7588##7590##' instead of only '#õ' (it takes value of 5th variable also) and then the rest of fields get misplaced.
    Any idea about this problem?
    Please note that My system in SAP 4.6.
    Thanks.

    Hi..
    Probably  is caused by the 2bytes consume of chinese characters, have you tried to temporarly delete those chinese characters from the input data and see what happen?..

    Please maintain the translation in SE63 - Translation->Abap objects->Other Long texts->FS(Forms & Styles ->SSF.
    Choose the target & source language & maintain the translation.
    If suppose, the original language is in 'EN', then maintain the translation in chinesese.

  • Universal charset for english and chinese

    Hi,
    Is there any universal charset for both english and chinese? I would like my portal to display both english and chinese characters and i understood that the default iPS charset is ISO-8859-1, we can change this to any charset, but this will be a global charset value. To change this value, i know i need to change at iwtPlatform and iwtUser. Any advise on this? Would like to know is there any universal character code to display english and chinese and if there is any, what is the code? Thanks a lot.

    Evelyn,
    You should be able to use UTF-8 or BIG-5 to display both Chinese and English.
    NOTE: BIG-5 will not be able to display simplified chinese. For Simplified Chinese, you should use GB 2312-80.

  • Having difficulty switching between English and Chinese

    Hi!
    I have a requirement to change the front panel strings (captions) from English to Chinese, at the click of a button.
    The PC specs are: Windows 2000, MSBC enabled with an IME.  LabVIEW 7.1 (Will eventually be using LabVIEW 8.20 - does this make it any easier?)
    I have done a little research on the NI web page, and have tried the following knowledge base article:
    http://zone.ni.com/devzone/conceptd.nsf/2d17d611efb58b22862567a9006ffe76/6d94f90fc9b93aad862568a7007...
    What I need to know is what this article means by "translating the text".  This is what I've tried thus far:
    Export strings to a file.
    Edit strings in an editor that supports Chinese.
    Save file as text (should I save it as xml instead?)
    Import Strings back into LabVIEW
    All that gets displayed is "???", instead of Chinese characters.
    Any suggestions?

    "... change the front panel strings (captions) from English to Chinese, at the click of a button."
    without scripting, no can do using the article you cited.
    The solution is trivial but the implementation is not.
    You will either have to update all of the captions or hide the captions and place string indicators where the captions would have been.

  • Are multiple languages e.g. English and Chinese doable as an iOS app with Classic text?

    I have an app (target iOS) that needs to be created first in English, then have the content converted to Chinese (which incidentally, I do not know).  With TLFtext gone, is this still reasonably easy to do?  Is it a matter of including a Chinese font and putting in the characters, or is there more to it than that?
    (And if you know whether this works or doesn't work with Android, please comment too.)
    Thanks.

    So long as you're using a font that has those characters you would go into Embed and click on the ones you want. Or just click All Glyphs.
    I think though that there can still be issues, and in the end I've also selected Use Device Fonts. I know that works on iOS and Android, but it may well be using a system font similar to my embedded one.

  • I have friends I like to email in China and in Chinese, however, the recent update to 9.0.1 seems to have blocked my ability to switch input languages from English to Chinese. Is there anyway to fix this to allow me to do input in English and Chinese?

    Under the old Firefox browser, I could switch input languages on the fly using the keyboard input option (shift+alt). However, this appears blocked on the new Firefox.

    this help is not useful.
    Since the new firefox version 20.0.1, '''no more of my add-ons work''' (except firebug ). They are installed '''but not visible '''(no toolbar, no menus) !!! same for the new add - ons that I installed. I tried everything: to reinstall add-on, to reinstall firefox.
    this new version of firefox is really horrible, '''thank you for making a corrective because I cannot work any more with'''

  • Multi-lingual Software & Database Design

    I am interested in how the industry is approaching multi-lingual software and database design. Specifically, I would like to know if there are any good resources (whitepapers, web sites, books) that get into the details of what the object model and data model of a multi-lingual design would look like and how the two fit together. I am working on a project that requires Product information to be stored in both English and French. Thank you.

  • Web Form Validation Message Language Setting at Runtime when work in multi lingual environment

    Business Catalyst use the default culture language to display web form validation message.
    When we are in multi lingual environment and not using subdoamin to handle multilingual sites, we found that the validation message did appear in the default culture setting. To make this work, we need to add the below script in our template.
    <script type="text/javascript">
    $(document).ready(function(){
    var head= document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0];
    var script= document.createElement('script');
    script.src= '/BcJsLang/ValidationFunctions.aspx?lang=FR';
    script.charset = 'utf-8';
    script.type= 'text/javascript';
    head.appendChild(script);
    </script>
    Assuming the template is in french. You can change the lang parameter in the script according to your language.

    After user 1 submits the page, it might not even be committed, so there is no way to have the pending data from user1 seen by user2.
    However, we do have a new feature in ADF 11g TP4 that I plan to blog more about called Auto-Refresh view objects. This feature allows a view object instance in a shared application module to refresh its data when it receives the Oracle 11g database change notification that a row that would affect the results of the query has been changed.
    The minimum requirements in 11g TP4 to experiment with this feature which I just tested are the following:
    1. Must use Database 11g
    2. Database must have its COMPATIBLE parameter set to '11.0.0.0.0' at least
    3. Set the "AutoRefresh" property of the VO to true (on the Tuning panel)
    4. Add an instance of that VO to an application module (e.g. LOVModule)
    5. Configure that LOVModule as an application-level shared AM in the project properties
    6. Define an LOV based on a view accessor that references the shared AM's VO instance
    7. DBA must have performed a 'GRANT CHANGE NOTIFICATION TO YOURUSER'
    8. Build an ADF Form for the VO that defined the LOV above and run the web page
    9. In SQLPlus, go modify a row of the table on which the shared AM VO is based and commit
    When the Database delivers the change notification, the shared AM VO instance will requery itself.
    However that notification does not arrive all the way out to the web page, so you won't see the change until the next time you repaint the list.
    Perhaps there is some way to take it even farther with the active data feature PaKo mentions, but I'm not familiar enough with that myself to say whether it would work for you hear.

  • Multi Lingual Titles

    We are developing a fully multi-lingual system and require the text displayed as report titles / headings to vary dependent on a 'locale' parameter. This does not appear to be possible - am I missing something?

    Is is possible with Oracle Reports!
    See the sample page on otn:

  • Unicode and Chinese

    This is driving me nuts.
    Created a page where there is a mix of English and Chinese,

    Hi guys
    I've just realised that the solution here isn't totally complete. If you are still interested in helping I would be really grateful.
    Quick re-cap:
    The problem was Java was mis-calculating the length of unicode strings.
    e.g. ...
    String nihao = "??";  //Should read 2 chinese characters, may display here as ??
    System.out.println(nihao.length()) ;... would print 6 or something, but not 2 as it should.
    I was recommended to use a parameter when invoking javac which fixed this problem.
    javac -encoding UTF-8 ClassName.javaNow, this solved the problem so far.
    However!!!! What I assumed would work and didn't test until now is this:
    System.out.println(nihao);But it doesn't work.
    So in a nutshell. If I have a Class which contains unicode strings out of the usual latin set and encode that text file as unicode, use a -encoding UTF-8 parameter when compiling, Java still prints out ?? to the command line.
    Is it my shell or is it Java?
    I'm using the Bash shell.
    If I had a file called ??.txt (should be 2 chinese chars) and used ls then ?? (should be 2 chiense chars) would not display properly. I would get ??.txt.
    To get the file name to display properly I would need to use ls -v. This -v flag makes things work.
    I've tried it with the java command but java doesn't like it.
    This is really doing my head in. If anyone has any ideas please help.
    Thanks.
    Chinese characters don't seem to be uploading to this website so it makes this post difficult. Where you are supposed to see chinese I have said so. It might display as ??. There are places where I wanted to write ??.
    I can't award Duke Dollars to this post as I did it already. I have posted a fresh version of this problem in the Java Programming forum. I have allocated Duke Dollars to that post so best to reply there if you have any ideas :)

  • Google Maps: Changed from English to Chinese with OS5

    Here is the issue:
    I bought an IPHONE4 in Hong Kong few month ago and I used it in CHINA with a chinese SIM card by China Mobile.
    The Google Maps works fine and they are in ENGLISH and Chinese.
    I have updated to OS5 few days ago and there you go...Google MAPS are now completely in CHINESE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    My friend had the same problem when he updaed his IPHONE3Gs to OS5 (IPHONE bought in ITALY with ITALIAN SIM Card).
    I mean what the ****?!
    My first IPHONE4 was bought in CHINA last year and at that time I had no idea that MAPS and all application linked to Google Map were in CHINESE! Even when I traveled abroad the MAPS were still in CHINESE (JAPAN and KOREA for example).
    So I sold it and I bought and IPHONE in HK and MAPs were working as expected...in ENGLISH!
    Is anyone out there able to provide a solution?
    PS: I have not yet tried to restore my PHONE to the original settings. Maybe this is the solution?! Let's see!
    Thanks
    C

    i also have posted another problem with the MAP.
    I don't have the language issue but after i've update to OS 5, my map is not able to navigate such that it is not able to route to any location. However, it is able to locate my current location. I was able to nagviate with the older version OS than OS5.
    Do you have this problem?
    Also, the keyboard for Chinese has some changes. The PinYin boxes seems bigger.
    I suspect bugs in OS5.
