Is iPod video the smallest compression?

I'm wondering about compressing an HDV sequence down to less than 100MB. I have the video right now to about 130MB but would like it smaller. Every time I try and make it an mp4 via iPod compression it distorts the picture to a really bad quality.
Shouldn't the quality remain the same since it's making it smaller via iPod compression? I understand losing quality when enlarging an image, but shrinking it and losing clarity just doesn't make sense...

I have no idea why it looks horrible but yes, if you have the Final Cut project, you should definitely us it by selecting File>Export>Using Compressor.
If you material were shot with 30 frames per second, you should keep it that way. Just select "current" or to be sure you can select "30" from the dropdown menu in thr settings.
Since you only have a 2.5 minute long video you can adjust the bitrate on up to 4000 - 5000 kb/s. If your footage in Final Cut is the original and at a high quality you usually shouldn't see a difference when you watch the H.264 MP4.

  • Does apple make an armband that fits the iphone and a g5 ipod video?

I'm getting an iphone for graduation in may but right now I have a 5th generation ipod video, and I have a gift card for apple. So is there an armband sold by apple so i can use the gift card and use the band for both devices

They are different sizes with controls in different locations, so one case is unlikely to fit both (at least, not well). But, you may want to look at the Marware Sportsuit Convertible - it's being discuntinues so it's only $5:

The same armband works with the iPhone:

  • Final Cut and iPod video

    Hey guys,
Trying to export a video for iPod from Final Cut. I have an "iPod: 320x240" option in my pull-down menu, but videos come out low quality a little disproportional. What's an advanced way to export iPod videos, and what settings do you recommend? Thanks!
    Sam

Any thoughts as to what might be wrong?
    Yeah, actually, it's my workflow.
I just ran a whole battery of tests and, from what I can deduce it's an issue of metadata. No matter what I do - even though my files are within all the specifications for iPod video - the only videos that iTunes says are iPod-ready were created either with the iPod preset (in QT Pro or FCP) or by iTunes.
So, unless you use any of the 3rd party apps available, we're seemingly stuck using the iPod preset in QT or FCP. And, if you're working with rectangular pixel material (SD material, in most cases), the only way to do things is to do the conversion in QT Pro. However, you have to be sure to adjust for non-square pixels.
If you're working with square pixel formats, you can export from FCP and not worry about distortion, but with SD stuff, it's not very straight forward. It can be done, but the steps needed within FCP - essentially you'd need to adjust all your sequences to NTSC 4:3 and then add distortion to your clips - are not worth it, IMHO.
Anyway, CaptM, to answer your question specifically, I take it you're working with anamorphic DV material? If so, I have nothing else to offer but the 'prescribed' workflow:
Export a reference movie from FCP
Open reference movie in QT Pro
Press Command-J to Show Movie Properties
    Disable the Timecode Track
Alter the Scaled Size (under Video Track > Visual Settings) to 720x405
    Press Command-S to Save
Press Command-E to bring up the Export Dialog
Select the Movie to iPod preset and press Save
You can alter the file extension of your file - either prior to export or after it's done - to .mov or .mp4, if needed. (The .mov extension, of course, being especially helpful if you're posting on a website)
This should produce the 320x180 file that you need.
Or did I miss your exact issue?

  • Choppy home video on iPad & iPod Video, but not iPod Touch

I'm trying to create a simple 3-minute home video with Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD 9.0 on my HP Pavilion desktop PC running Vista. I render the edited video as an MP4 file. If I double-click the file, it opens in QuickTime player and plays just fine. If I add it to iTunes, it plays in the iTunes player just fine. If I synch it to my 32Gig iPod touch - just fine.
But on my 2nd Gen 80Gig iPod Video, the video is VERY choppy - one frame every half second or so. On the iPad it's better - but there are a bunch of square artifacts in the frame whenever there's movement in the frame, like swinging your arm from side to side. Is there some way I can... OPTIMIZE this video for the iPad? It'd be a really impressive way of showing off the video. I could burn the video to a DVD and show it on a TV, but the iPad is obviously more portable.
Any advice? Any questions about how I'm rendering the video?
    Dennis

  • New iPod nano Vs iPod Video

i currently own a mini and i am thinking of upgrading, but i dont know which ipod to get. should i get the new nano or the ipod video, the price between the most expensive nano and the cheapest video isnt that much. so which one? thanks

Only you can answer that question.
What do you intend to store on the iPod? Just music? Or do you want the ability to playback video?
Do you have a lot of music? Do you want a flash based player (the nano) because you want to use it during sports activity?
If you are not bothered about physical size, then go for the bigger storage space.
In my experience, it's way to easy to fill up an iPod and wish you had more space!

It really depends on what is important to you. If you want an extremely small and light device and you don't care about video or gobs of storage space, the nano is for you. If you need lots of storage and want to view videos, the iPod with video is the best option.

  • Video Compression - iPod Video 30GB

Hello All.... Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays, which ever you prefer.
I could not find a direct answer to my question seaching the posts, hopefully you all can help.
When a movie is purchased from iTunes it is an H.264 format with 1.5-1.7 Mbps total bitrate and 120-128kbps Audio and has a resolution of roughly 853x356 in most cases. These result in a relatively good quality video while watching full screen on my PC as well as on my MacBook Pro and great quality on my iPod Video.
In order for me to put a home movie on my ipod or my finacee's ipod i have to compress them further to 320x240 and can only go as high as 768 Kbps in order for them to even sync to the pods(as per listed iPod capabilities).
How can the movies we can buy get away with the beter quality?
Is it possible to go about using the same compression quality as Itunes does to get good full screen resolution? if it is possible how can i do it? what program is used?
    Thanks for all you help....

mine (80 GB) can play a 640x480 video at 1.5mbps h.264 format. i use videora converter.

  • THE SIMPLEST WAY TO GET A DVD MOVIE IN IPOD VIDEO IN 2-3 HRS

I just got the Ipod video and got Quick time 7pro and everything but it is not the right software to play a DVD or get a dvd movie into ipod. So i tell you exactly what to do: go to carrydvd.com, find the version for use on symbian and psp. download it to test it or buy it to be able to convert a whole dvd movie. When you have the software ready you just put the DVD in, on the screen go where it says select video quality: PSP (MP4) Hi quality. go to screen size select 320X240 (PSP, PALM OR WINCE) PRESS PLAY BUTTON AND IT WILL COMPRESS. WHEN FINISH YOU GO TO ITUNES AND IN FILE GO TO ADD FILE TO LIBRARY, LOCATE THE MOVIE YOU JUST COMPRESSED AND ADD IT TO THE LIBRARY, THEN CONNECT THE IPOD AND JUST PUT THE MOVIE FROM THE LIBRARY TO THE IPOD AND IS READY. I JUST GOT IN MY IPOD TROY WITH THE QUALITY OF A BOUGHT VIDEO OF ITUNES MUSIC STORE.

  • Downloaded the A-Team to my ipod video but can't find it

hello, I had just recently purchased the ipod video and over the weekend decided to test it out and I downloaded from apple's website the A-team now i can view it on my itunes under tv show but when i look for it on my ipod video there is no drop down menu for TV show i see videos, music, photos but no menu for TV show what can i do?
    thanks

i can view it on my itunes under tv show but when i look for it on my ipod video there is no drop down menu for TV show
I would contact ITMS and "REQUEST" they correct the matter. Whoever created the file did not properly include all of the required meta-data information which would create a valid path for file display on the iPod. Further, there seems to be a growing occurance (i.e., the lack of quality control) during the production of these files. While I might expect a small number of such files to crop up on occasion, I expect a commercial marketer to respond in a professional manner or suffer the legal ramifications of their failure to correct known product defects.
Be that as it may, you can of course, temporarily work around the problem by creating a "Playlist" to contain your TV episodes by series title. Just remember to order them properly within the playlist to maintain proper play order.

  • IPod video gives itunes the can't read or write error

I bought my iPod Video through the apple store shortly before Xmas. Since i was sepnding the holidays with my GF, she uses ugh windows. I formatted my ipod with windows, and got some songs on it and started using it.
When I came back, around 3 weeks ago, I cleared it to get it working in my powermac, but it gave me this read-write error, so i made a system restore and re-populated it with all my music, video's, contact info and calendar stuff.
Two days ago i got some new music, and (i also installed the dreaded 1.1 update), I tried to update my ipod with iTunes and i got this error in itunes saying it couldnt read or write to my ipod. Weird, I thought, but i restored it to factory settings. When I tried to import some music, it gave me the same error. Now I cant put any music at all!!!
What could be causing this problem?

I went to the Apple shop and they said it is now vintage and they can't fix my baby they offered me 10% to trade her in for a new model...
what else can I try to save her?  I've tried cleaning and wiggling and restoring. Everything looks and feels ok.

I've just found 'iPod Dock Connector Headphone Jack' on ebay it as an adapter that will connect my earphones via the wide ipod port better than 10% of something new

What have you tried so far in terms of troubleshooting this issue?  Are you plugging the iPod into a high powered USB 2.0 port on the back of your PC? Have you tried a different USB cable?
