Is is possible to use 16GB backup on a 8GB phone ?

My phone is dead. I was thinking I might save a few bucks while I waiting for the new phone to come out and get a used 8gb to replace my damaged 16gb. Obviously everything I have on the 16gb won't fit on the 8GB but can I use a backup of the 16gb to get my contacts, photos etc on an replacment 8gb phone?

If the iPhone is a previously activated iPhone and erase all content and settings on the iPhone has not been used or the iPhone has not been restored with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from the iPhone's backup, you won't be presented with transferring the backup for your existing iPhone, but you can restore the replacement iPhone with iTunes on your computer from the backup for your existing iPhone.
If you have a backup for your iPhone, you sync your iPhone with iTunes or manually update your iPhone's backup with iTunes on your PC at home. The iPhone's backup is updated as the first step during the iTunes sync process. You can sync contacts direct with the address book used by Outlook Express with XP called Windows Contacts I believe. If Windows Contacts is empty, enter one contact in Windows Contacts before the first sync. This will provide a merge prompt with the first sync for this data, which you want to select.
Having a MobileMe account would provide for syncing contacts and calendar events over the air with your iPhone with your MobileMe online contacts and calendar - or with the MobileMe "cloud", not with your Yahoo online address book. You should be able to export your Yahoo online contacts for import with your MobileMe online address book, or by Windows Contacts with XP on your PC at home, which can be synced with your MobileMe online address book.

  • Is it possible to use a backup from an iPad 3 to restore an iPad 2?

I am currently setting up a model within the company I work at for leasing out iPads to our customers. The process being worked on is that we set them up as we like them, then ship them out.
However, as above, my question is can a 3rd Gen iPad backup be used for a 2nd Gen iPad, or do you need to have a backup from each model to use on other iPads?
    Any help appreciated here,

  • So if I back up my iPhone 4, will it be possible to use that backup and transfer it to my iPhone 5?

That should work right? So I'll have my same contacts and such?

It is possible, although icloud will work more smoothly.

  • Is it safe to assume that once you've used a backup of an old phone to restore a new one that you can delete the old backup?  I am running out of "cloud" space and want to free up space

I purchased an additional 20gb of storage and I am getting a message that I am out of space on the cloud to backup my Iphone or my iPad.  When I checked my settings it seems like it's because my old iPhone backup is still being stored.  Since I used my old lphone4 backup to load my new iPhone5s would it be safe to say that I can delete that backup now since all the info that was on that phone has been transferred to my iPhone5s.  This way I can free up storage in my icloud (instead of buying additional storage?)

    Hi Mcchen425,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
As a precaution, I would suggest backing up your iPhone to your computer via iTunes as well as iCloud.  Then you can delete one of your two backups.  The article below will explain all of your options for deleting data or backups from your iCloud storage.

    Drivers and utilities are here.
No need to pirate anything. As you say, you have already purchased Windows 7 Home Premium. And as the mad RN says, you can legally download Windows. (Microsoft sells activation - not the software.)
Select Windows 7 Home Premium x64 SP1 (bootable) from this site.
Download Windows 7 Integrated With SP1 ISO – Official Direct Download Links
Be sure to partition and format during Setup. (No need for this using the recovery media. And you get a recovery-environment partition plus a full-recovery partition.)
       Installing and reinstalling Windows 7
Good luck on installing the drivers and utilities. The order is problematic. Best luck seems to be had by installing the Intel chipset and display software prior to other drivers. (No need for any of this when you use recovery media, of course.)
If you cannot activate Windows using the product key on the bottom of the computer, come back here for tips. (Windows on the recovery media is preactivated.)
One advantage to this approach is you'll avoid all the extra garbage, especially offers from Amazon, NetZero, Norton, QuickBooks, and Skype.
My time, however, is worth way more than the $30. I would opt for ordering the recovery media and removing the garbage. But that's your call.

  • Is it possible to use the personal hotspot on my phone while in airplane mode?

I have the Personal Hotspot on my phone and was wondering if while in the air (when my phone is on Airplane Mode) I could use it for wifi for my MacBook Pro.
    Thanks!
    -AS

To simplify Personal Hotspot, the phone needs data coming in (via cellular) to push it out (via wifi) to your MBP.  As wjosten said, with Airplane Mode on, all radios are off so no cellular or wifi functions will work.

  • Using nokia's E series of phones with linksys

    Hello,
I wonder if it is possible to use one of Nokia's mobile phones (E60,E61,E70 with VOIP features ) with any of the Linksys products? If so, what products are needed?
    Grtz,

@ Mountain2k : What kind of scenario are you looking for? Using a Linksys access point/router? Or are you interested in connecting the phone to an SPA9000?
There are two essential pieces to tracking down a problem with your VoIP equipment:
The configuration of every device involved
    SIP protocol traces
And don't forget: there's no such thing as giving too much information when describing a problem.

  • Difficulties getting old backup data to new phone

So, I thought it would be a simple thing to do - But no.I had a Xperia ZR (with Lolipop) and bought myself a Z3 compact. Before I resetted my ZR and made a backup using the backup program that the phone has in it, not PC companion. The result was a nice 800mb file on the SD-card, with all the apps, messeges, contacts and so on on it. So far so good. The major problem starts when I was about to resett all my old data to my new phone, using the exact same program on the Z3 compact. It can´t find the file at all, there is no option in restoring my old data in that app "backup & restore". All files are there in a map called ´.semc-fullbackup´ but the app can´t obviously do anything with it.  A little help would be much appriciated!  P.S my Sony ZR is sold, so no luck there..  Cheers

There should be another option except for the one which requires the old phone found at Xperia transfer > Sony/Sony Ericsson device > Xperia backup from computer.
I believe you're swedish so it should look like this:

  • Is it possible to use backup files previously copied to an external hard drive to backup an iPhone?

My sister froze her iPhone by trying to turn it off during a software update (not sure why) and restored it because she thought it would fix it. Unfortunately she unintentionally deleted all of her data and settings. She doesn't use iCloud, so I'm assuming all her files are backed up to her computer when she syncs her iPhone, but using iTunes I can only find two backup points using Edit>Preferences>Devices, both in the past few minutes. I know that each sync overrides the last backup files instead of creating newer ones, so apparently older backup files from her computer can't be used to recover her data. However, we both periodically use an external hard drive to back up our computers by basically dragging and dropping our files onto it, so there is an earlier version of her User folder on the external hard drive. It would definitely be preferable to use the backup files from a few months ago that are on the external hard drive and lose a few photos than to lose years of data, so would it be possible to direct iTunes to those backup files (AppData etc) instead of the ones saved on her computer hard drive? There's not any kind of browse option I can see that could allow me to get iTunes to search for backup files on the external hard drive and I'm not computer savvy enough to manually find the files and connect them to iTunes. Is it even possible to use backup files from an external hard drive? Do I have to replace the ones that exist on her computer now?

    Garageband can't use VST plugins.
If you're talking about AUs: you could try to put an alias into the HD/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components folder instead of the actual files, and see if GB loads them.

Is it still possible to downgrade from ios 6 to ios 5.1.1 on my ipod touch 4th gen as of Sept.24? Also, if I use a backup created AFTER updating to ios 6, when I restore/downgrade to ios 5.1.1, does it become ios 6 again because of the version of ios 6 that I created the backup on?

There has never been a legit way to downgrade.
It will always restore to the latest available software.

Use Google and you can find similar drives from other companies.

  • Is it possible to use an external hard drive for time machine backup and also as a regular hard drive?

Is it possible to use an external hard drive for time machine backup and also as a regular hard drive?

I am using an external drive in the exact way that you described. You just keep it plugged in to the computer when you want to access the movies and files. In order to put files on it, just go to finder open up the drive under devices and drag and drop files onto the drive. It is just like using a usb drive with a terabyte of space.

  • HT201250 if I used external hard disk for backup time machine, is it possible to use that external hard disk to save another else from diffrent computers?

If I used external hard disk for back up time machine, is it possible to use that external hard disk to save another else from diffrent computers?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can do this, but you should make a new volume on your external disk. Time Machine needs a volume that is only used to store backups, so you can't store other data in the same volume as the one you are using for making backups.
If you want to create another volume on your external disk, use Disk Utility to do this > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html Anyway, you should get another external disk to store other files, but if you don't want to, you can create another volume in it

  • Is it possible to use 2 firewire drives as TM backup with raid?

It seems that RAID is used for a lot of things, but I haven't been able to figure out if this is a proper use.
I have two hard drives. (1 TB/320 GB) I'd like to format the two drives into one using RAID in Disk Utility and use fore Time Machine backups. Is this possible or advisable? If this would work, is there a limit to the number of drives in a RAID setup?
    Thanks.

It's certainly possible to use a proper RAID with Time Machine, but you don't have the drives to create a proper RAID. A proper RAID system should be built using identical drives - same capacity, same brand and ideally, even the same firmware.

  • HT201250 Is it possible to use Dropbox or Microsoft OneDrive as the backup disk for time machine?

I have a MacBook Pro for which I have not set up Time Machine. I have a Dropbox account and a Microsoft OneDrive account, each with plenty of space to serve as backups. Is it possible to use either of these as THE backup disk for Time Machine? It doesn't appear intuitive from Time Machine on my MBP.
    Thank you.

No. Time Machine does not work with "cloud" drives.
