Is is the BIOS or the system board?

Hi.  I have a pc manufactued by a deceased company named Quantex.  The pc has a MSI MS-6199VA
system board with W6199VAFD v3.3 121799 Bios, an Intel P6C (Coppermine) Pentium III 733Mhz
processor and a VIA Apollo Pro 133 chipset.
I have been having some trouble with the pc over the last month.  It has an nVidia GeForce 256 video
card and around the middle of October I updated my install of Norton SystemWorks from NSW 2002 to
NSW 2003 as well as updating the nVidia drivers to the latest version (40.72).  Things have not been the
same since.  I started getting random system freezes and 0D or 0E Fata Exceptions as Windows 98SE
was starting to initialize and display the desktop and Windows signon.  I was always able to restart in
Safe Mode, but not always able to get around the Fatal Exception in normal mode.
Over the course of the next month, the pc never really attained stability.  Sometimes it ran fine for a while,
then would just freeze.  I started backing up more often and got PowerQuest Drive Image for disaster
recovery purposes.  I already had a tape drive, but sometimes the tape backup software would
freeze/stop functioning in the middle of a backup.
I then got a larger hard drive, so that I do Drive Image backups to HDD rather than CD-RW.  I got an
ATA-100 80 Gb drive but did not yet install it.
This past week I checked your website to see if I could find any additional information about my BIOS
and if it would support the new hard drive.  I saw that I was on v3.3 and that you have v3.5.  It also
appeared to me that v3.5 was needed for the new drive.  It also seemed to me that my issues could be
hardware (ie, system board) related.
Anyway,  I used your v3.5 BIOS update utility to backup my existing BIOS.  Double checked my system
board and chipset and then tried the v3.5 update.  The flash update did not write completely (out of the
two full rows of white progress boxes around 6 of them were blue).  I restored the original bios and
regained some function.  However, I can no longer even get through the CMOS setup without the pc
freezing.
I have reseated all cards and the processor as well as trying only one memory chip at a time.  Nothing
has changed the behavior.  I even reflashed the v3.5 BIOS, this time with a clean update (all white
progress boxes).  Still no stability.
I am just looking for some advice.  It my system board gone?  Was it going or did I destroy it with the bios
update?  Since my original equipment manufacter is no longer in business I have nowhere to go for
hardware support.  Is it possible to find a replacement system board or better to cut my losses and get a
new pc.  I am fairly pc competent but not to the point where I would swap out a system board on my own.
Vic

On Friday I decided to take everything apart; including removing the system board and then put it all back together.  Believe it or not, without any repairs since I last replied in this forum, my pc is now somewhat revived.  It appears as though my problem might have been that the processor was not completely seated in the slot.  Does that make sense?  The freezing during CMOS setup or OS startup has completely disappeared.
There are still some stability problems and there also appears to be a BIOS issue.
I think the stability problems are from corrupt OS files (Win98 SE) and I am thinking the only recovery for that is to reinstall.  Nothing like a perfect opportunity to move this hardware to Windows 2000.
Now for the BIOS question.  This board is an MS-6199VA.  The BIOS is W6199VMS v3.5 100200 with BIOS ID of 01/01/2000-692-596-W977-2A6LGM4BC-00.  At the tail end of the BIOS startup I get the following..
CMOS Checksum error - Defaults loaded.
Warning! CPU has been changed.
Please re-enter CPU settings in the CMOS setup and   remember to save before quit.
Press F1 to continue or DEL to enter CMOS setup
I have gone through all the CMOS setup options, set them, changed some; like disabling a serial port and setting up a power on password, and save them.  Yet I still get this message every time.
Other than halting the startup until I press F1 or DEL there seems to be no other negatives.  Am I missing something or is there a storm coming?

Do you see item #3 (Novo button) on the right-hand side of your laptop? If you push it briefly while the laptop is fully powered off, it should boot to a small menu that has entering BIOS as one of the choices.

    Hi.
My PC had a problem, i have to recover it using the Backup BIOS build, but ¿how i do that?. My laptop is a Compaq CQ 42 124LA Notebook. I think that the bridges are like the jumpers in a desktop computer right?.
    Thanks for your support.

Please describe the problem exactly. You can roll back the BIOS but you have to have an image of the original BIOS with which to flash.

  • Nasty bug(s) in the BIOS of my 6758 board

I sent an email to the MSI support address, but I haven't recieved any information yet.
    Here's the issue, lengthily described:
I have two Promise UDMA100 PCI controllers.
In the old system (MS-6378) this worked very nicely.
The two boards recognized each other, and only the first one ran it's bios, finding all eight attached disks.
Once I upgraded to an MS-6758 board, this changed for the worse....
The Promise boards still recognized each other, but now, BOTH Promise boards ran their bios, finding all eight disks twice.
If that was the end of it, however, I wouldn't be sitting here right now...
The worst thing was that the board was IMPOSSIBLE to boot with!
    even floppies failed.
I didn't even get the good old ascii art frame with info about the system, just a black screen.
I then tried attaching a couple IDE drives to the onboard IDE3 controller, but was utterly unable to enable it as anything but RAID.
I don't want a RAID, I just want to access the two disks directly
Oh, and lastly, the system runs linux.

Whoa there big guy.... lets take it down a notch.
This forum is not officially monitored by MSI. It is more of a user to user help forum. Rest assured there are alot of users on these boards who know these products well and have a wealth of knowledge to share (with polite people who ask for help).
Now if you would like help please post your full system specs: All hardware in the system, memory type and config CPU, hard disks, etc.....MB Bios version.....
and we will see what we can do...
Also be patient there are alot of people looking for help and you should not expect an immediate turn around on your question. People will offer you answers (If they think you are genuine) based on their own experiences and knowledge and some times this can be just what you need to get the issue resolved.
I will do my best to help you out with these troubles you are having.

Right click 'Computer', then left click 'Properties', 'Advanced system settings', 'Startup and Recovery' 'Settings', uncheck 'Automatically resart'.

    Thanks buddy, now I found.
I'll take and post all the screens of my bios, if possible tell me if you configured everything right or if I need to change something ok.
Every time I try to run prime95 linx or just going to play, does not take long to see this screen.

  • Will an X230t system board fit in the standard X230?

Related to my other post about my 2306CTO X230 no longer powering up:  if I happen to find a replacement system board for the X230t tablet version, will it fit in my standard X230?
The FRU for my system board is 04Y1670.  Might have located a reasonably-priced replacement for an X230t, FRU 04W6804.
    Thanks!

If you use a dremel, maybe, but I recommend you to buy a X230 (non-Tablet) system board.

  • Big fan noise problem: the rear fan won't shut off, the BIOS won't update, systemupdate locks up

I received new ThinkStaion (oh boy, lots of memory and CPU speed, yay!)
I unfortunately left the originally installed Vista OS on there.  Very much regretting that as I believe it contributes to the following problems (BIOS).
So the original problem was that after just a month of using my new ThinkStation, the System Board died, and it had to be replaced. Honestly, all I did was choose the sleep or hibernate option in Vista to shut down.  Afterwards, poof! didn't even get the proper Power lights on the system.  I diagnosed this with the online docs and then sat for a few hours on our tech support line doing all the same things to re-diagnose it.
So after the replacement, the rear fan will not shut off. Jet engine noise all day. I went into the system settings and selected "Quiet" for the Fan settings but that did not help.
Research on this forum resulted in the possibility of a BIOS update fixing the problem.  Comparison to my co-workers systems which arrived at the same time shows this BIOS is woefully out of date, so even if it does not fix the fan issue I want to update it.  However, everything I've tried to do is failing for one reason or another.
(The fan issue does need resolution since in one week I will end up sharing an office (first time in many years, thanks IBM for nothing!) so since I don't want us both to have to wear noise cancelling headsets, I'd like to fix this without having to just pull the @#$@ power to the fan. Grrrr. )
I downloaded what I felt were the appropriate Lenovo apps to update both the BIOS and the serial number but none seem to work properly from the command line in Vista.  One of the two (can't recall which) asks me to reboot and it never actually shuts down. Eternal "Shutting Down" message. Ga!  The other throws some gosh awful

Then I decided Vista might be the problem and found sites recommending flashing the BIOS from a bootable USB.  So I started down that path and after burning the wrong version, finally geting the AIK Vista tools installed and to the point of trying to make the USB bootable, it won't allow me to put the OS boot on it.  Ah, for the days when a simple "sys a:" took care of that.
So, after reformatting the USB and pounding my head in the wall, keyboard, etc. I am at my wit's end.  What to do.  I just want the fan noise to go away.
This does seem to duplicate other forum messages but I can't get anywhere on this.  Help!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

FYI to all the helpful folks here (and any looking to shut their jet engine off as well): Flashing the BIOS did the trick.
First I had to find a website with DOS OS files and put those on the USB instead of Vista.  Oldie but a goodie, but at least it booted! No other versions would.
I had been intending to use the WinPhlash utility that Lenovo supplied with the BIOS update but since I was booting from DOS that was useless. However, I found a DOS version of it and used that instead. Boom baby!  Flashed and rebooted.
It did take two boots to get it back to normal (first one gave very alarming messages about no operating system being found but I think it was just a remnant of the reboot that was triggered from the DOS session).  A second boot returned life to normal and blissful silence from the server.  And I was finally able to get the model and serial number back in there to get rid of the bootup message it throws for that too.
    Ahhhhhhh.
Thanks to all for the hints - I believe I had gotten the idea of flashing the BIOS to solve this from some other thread I found here.  This is a very nice forum to have bookmarked.

  • New NF980-G65 with an AMD X6 1090T and the BIOS Update Utility Crashes?

Last week I received my new NF980-G65 board and with it an AMD Phenom II X6 1090T (Thuban 3.2GHz Socket AM3).  After installing the board and starting it up for the first time I noticed that it reports BIOS version 1.1 and CPU unknown.  Next I downloaded the BIOS update to version 1.3 from msi, made a boot USB stick and powered up again.  System will not boot from USB.  I tried now over 20 different sticks from 256MB to 64GB and none of them worked!
Went back to my old system and ripped its floppy drive out to install it in the new computer.  Had to go to RadioShack since I have not touched a floppy in over 10 years, but they had some on clearance.  Made me a boot disk, put the new BIOS and install utility on it, booted the system with the floppy, started the BIOS update utility and watched it crash.  When I start it by itself it gives me three screens of options and commands, but as soon as I try to use one of the commands or update the BIOS it keeps crashing.
What do I have to do to get the BIOS on the NF980-G65 updated so it will run with my AMD X6 1090T processor?
Thank you in advance for ANY help...

What thing are you talking about?  You are experiencing the a certain symptom for which you do not know the cause.  For some strange reason and without any in-depth tests you seem to assume that the board must be the problem (ignoring all other components (for example your factory overclocked memory modules).

What support have you tried to get that actually has to do anything with money?  Please note that this is not MSI Technical Support but a User-to-User forum, run by users (just like you) that do not get paid for donating their private time to try to help others.  Whatever your level of frustration is in regards to the money spent for your components, please do not use it to insult anyone here in this forum.

Yes Enable BIOS Boot Function as it will need that to flash from USB stick

also, switching the bios with the switch when the system is on safe?I am very scared to brick this bios also :(
the flipping BIOS Switch while in the BIOS to the other in this situation is OK to do as we worked this out as a viable recovery technique when the Z77 mpower boards kept getting a single bricked chip and as the actual way that functions on a BIOS level is the same it should have no problems at all to flip it live to attempt recovery of that bad chip!
ALL the boards with 2 BIOS chips Advise against doing it but we have had a near 0 fail rate reported by doing that as the Z77 M-powers where notorious for having either BIOS A or B Bricked by a failed flash and doing it the way i advised usually helps to recover the chip with very little risk to the working one as long as you have flipped the switch before the flash starts! (wouldn't want a failed flash on the working chip too as then you are really out of options)
(Reason for them Advising Against it is it will imprint a copy of the settings and MFLASH from one chip to the other via data held in your RAM to the one you just switched to and on a functioning chip that could brick it badly but as the one you are switching to is already bricked and totally non functional it has a near 0 chance of messing up anything as its already FUBAR and a 90-100% chance of fixing it via a new flash to it)
Does that answer your questions and put your mind at ease?

  • Is the new version of the bios worth going to?

This is more a generaly question about the BIOS. currently. my system works fine (i think.. havn't had much time to really test it, as i just got it up last night), and I figure if i'm going to flash the bios, i may as well do it now before i get too far into getting it tweaked and set up the way i like it.
so.... is it worth the risk to flash the BIOS? i've never done a bios flash before, so i want to be sure it's something that won't kill my board, as i already went through hell getting it from a supplier in the first place.
    any suggestions?
