Is it a good idea to only save my photos on iCloud Drive instead of paying extra for phone storage?

I'd rather not pay too much for extra storage space when I buy my phone and I am willing to pay 0.99 cents per month for iCloud Drive.

Given all the issues people are having right now with iCloud Drive you would be better off waiting for iCloud photo library to be introduced later this year.  It's designed for allow you to keep your photos in iCloud without having to store them all on your phone.  Besides, you have to use iCloud Drive compatible apps to access documents and data on your iCloud Drive, and as far as I know, there aren't any such apps to access or store photos there from your iOS devices yet.

  • Is it a good idea to install an SSD as the main drive and a regular HD for data?

Please help me make the best decision on making my machine faster without having to purchase a new one!

Nothing is going to make that system any faster. The Speed of any system it determined by the speed of the CPU, RAM and Graphic processor. The speed of the hard drive or SSD has little to do with the overall speed of the system.
Yes with a faster hard drive and certainly with a SSD the system will boot faster and load programs faster, and with some programs that use the storage media (HDD or SSD) to store files while running, which will SEEM to make the whole system faster, but in reality it is not. The CPU and memory can only do so much in any given time period. With newer systems that speed is faster then with older system and there is nothing you can do to make an older system as fast as a newer system with a more modern, faster, CPU and faster RAM.

  • I have 10Gb of photos on my iphone, so can choose only half of it (5Gb) and share it with icloud and leave the rest on my phone storage, or i must share all photos and videos (my whole camera roll)

No.  Your iCloud account only includes your the camera roll photos stored in the backup.  And they can only be accessed by restoring the backup to your phone.  Also, if you delete any photos from your camera roll and continue to back up, the backup that contained the deleted photos would be overwritten by one that doesn't and they would be lost.
If you want to save some of them and delete them from your phone, import them to your computer as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.
Another option is to import all of them to your computer and delete them from your phone, then put the ones you want on your phone in a folder and sync them back to your phone by selecting the folder on the photos tab of your iTunes sync settings and syncing.  The advantage of this approach is that synced photos are placed in an album called Photo Library, which is not included in the iCloud backup (since they are already backed up on your computer), thereby saving space in your iCloud account (which only backs up camera roll photos).

  • HT1711 Why do I have to pay extra for something that I already bought? Shouldn't I be able to have access to my music even if its not through apple? This is ridiculous when I go to the store and buy a CD I'm not relegated to only playing it on one CD play

iTunes Plus is the name for the option in iTunes that allows customers to buy music at the iTunes Store that is free from digital rights management, or DRM.
Digital Rights Management, or DRM, is designed to prevent unauthorized sharing of files. This especially became a big concern for the music industry after the rise of Napster, Limewire, and Kazaa.
DRM, even the DRM used by Apple on iTunes Store content, prevented that. Apple's DRM allowed users to share files on only up to 5 computers.
According to TUAW, the new iTunes Plus songs have information embedded in them that identifies the user who bought and shared them by name.
This means that if you share your music and record companies want to track you down and sue for you copyright infringement, it's going to be easy.
This may help you understand why you would need iTunes Plus - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1711.
It may be that Android required that type of file to be able to let it sync.  See here - http://developer.android.com/guide/appendix/media-formats.html.

  • How can I save my photos to icloud?? What do I need to do???

Hi can you tell me how do I save my pics to icloud??

Don't try to use iCloud to back up your photos.  iCloud streams your photos to your other devices but photo stream photos only remain in iCloud for 30 days.  It will also back up your camera roll photos but if you delete the photos from your phone and continue backing up, the backup that contains the deleted photos will be overwritten by one that doesn't and they will be lost.  You could also add them to a shared stream and they will remain in iCloud indefinitely, but they will be a lower resolution than the originals.
You also can't save any space on your phone using iCloud for your photos.  If you add photos to your photo stream, then delete them from your phone, they will also be deleted from your photo stream.
If you want to back up your photos, import them to your computer as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.

  • How do I save a file to iCloud Drive and NOT have it sync to all my devices?

I have a Macbook Air with 128GB of SSD storage.  I have a Mac Mini with 2TB of storage.  Both are running OS X 10.10 with iCloud Drive enabled.  All iOS devices are on 8.0+ with iCloud Drive.  I want to upload files to my iCloud Drive from my Macbook Air and then delete them off my Air to save valuable storage space.  When I try to delete a file from my iCloud Drive on my MB Air, it prompts me to say that the file will be deleted from ALL iCloud Drive devices.  I just want delete it locally on the MB Air.  Is there a way to do this?  Do I have to do it through the iCloud Drive web interface?  Can I just make a folder in iCloud Drive that does not sync to the other devices but you can still "view" the files?  I just want to save files in the iCloud but not have all those files synced on my Macbook Air.  Make sense?   Help please!  Thank you in advance.

You're going to find that pretty much every cloud storage system works in a similar way. Some, like OneDrive, will allow you to select what folders sync to and from every machine it's installed on.
Maybe something like that would fit your needs better.

  • Can I save photos to iCloud without taking up space on my phone??

I was wondering if the new iCloud features will allow me to store my photos on the server instead of on my phone.
By now, many of us must have an excessive amount of photos on our devices.  It would be nice if I could 'archive' or 'keep on server' my photos from 2010 that I rarely access... but still have the ability to download them if I were so inclined.  I am using GB upon GB in pictures and have no space for movies and music at this point.
Is anything like this possible?  what about with iOS 8 and the new iCloud features?
I know if I create a stream it gives me the ability to download the whole thing.
    Any tips/direction would be appreciated....

The best tip I can give you is to export ALL of your photos to your computer, then store them indefinitely on a portable HD and/or thumb drive as a backup.
You will get the full resolution photo when you do the export.   The one that gets copied to your photostream is a compressed version.
Don't have a computer?    Use a cloud-based storage service such as dropbox and pay for the extra storage if you exceed 5GB.
iCloud is an all-or-nothing backup service.   You can't just save photos to your iCloud... it doesn't work that way, yet.

  • HT201317 How do I save my photos from iCloud to my computer

Hey guys I just got my new iPhone and I want to save my photos from my photo stream. I sold my old iPhone and forgot to transfer them to my laptop, luckly they were still in my photo stream. However, I don't know how to save the photos from my photo stream to my laptop. Can anybody please help me?

Save them to the camera roll on your phone by opening the my photo stream album, tap Edit, tap the photos, tap Share, then tap Save to Camera Roll.  Once they're in the camera roll you can import them as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.

  • REQUEST: Good ideas to make my band photo look PRO

Hi! I´m looking for help/instructions to make my band photo look more  pro/cool. Also it has some mistakes i would like to vanish:
    1.  The sealing should be turned from white to black and still look as  natural as possible. Does this mean the singer´s hair will vanish?
    2. The pockets I would like to be black, like this:
    3. One version which has the first two and all the basic gizmos adjusted, contrast, black&white points etc.
    4. Additional with colouring/effects, something like one in below or else you think may be suitable for this kind of photo.
IN CASE someone decides to do these by himself (I´m sure it  will take max 10min. for you true gurus ;), links for original pics are  below. The divine individual who mails me examples will have my infinite  respect! [email protected]

Here is a very quick (Mask with the mouse, as Wacom was not hooked up) treatment with the low-rez version.
In this case, there was a bit of distortion with the Free Transform to create a bit of perspective. I would definitely use a different background image, but did not have the big externals hooked up to the laptop, so just grabbed one, that contrasted a bit, and was not too busy. I could see using something like a graffitti-covered brick wall, thrown out of focus a bit, with a Blur. I have dozens of those, but not resident on the laptop. I also added an Outer Glow here, but something like Mystical Lighting (an optional plug-in), could prove useful. For that background, you can get as weird, as you wish.
One big consideration would be the feeling that you want to create, and that would probably be based on the music and its style. Say you do Mephis jazz, think about a brick wall from Beale St., maybe with a little bit of a neon sign, etc. So very many possibilities there.
I did not adjust the pockets here, especially with the low-rez image, but it would be a series of easy Masks, and probably a Hue Saturation Adjustment Layer.
Does this give you any ideas?
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS - obviously, with your higher-rez image, the Masking would be so very much better. This was just for an example, was done in about 3 mins.and only to give you some things to think about. It took 10x as long to type the above, as the work that I did.

  • TS3989 I have photo stream setup on iPhoto on my macbook pro and I just got 2 iPhones for my family and only one streams photos to iCloud photo stream.  Both iPhones have the same Apple ID and have Photo Stream turned on.  Shouldn't both iPhones stream ph

I have photo stream setup on iPhoto on my MacBook Pro and on 2 new iPhones that have the same AppleID as the MacBook Pro.  However only one iPhone will stream photos to iPhoto on the MacBook Pro.  All these devices were purchased in the last 2 weeks.  What setting is wrong?

Photostream only syncs photos over Wi-Fi, make sure you are connected to Wi-Fi to begin with.
Photostream only syncs when the camera app is closed, ensure it is closed.
Photostream only syncs when the battery is above 20%, try recharging the device
Try disabling photo stream on your device (settings > iCloud), restarting your device and then re-enabling photo stream.
If this doesn't help you may need to reset photo stream. You can do this at icloud.com by clicking on your name in the top right corner and then the advanced settings in the pop-up dialogue box that appears.
Note: disabling photostream and re-enabling it will result in any photos that are currently in the photostream album on your device, that are older than 30 days old, not being added back.

  • TS2755 Is there a way to only save text messages?

I was told there is a problem with my back up which prevented me from sending and recieving imessages or I would recieve them realy late. I had to restore my phone without using my back up and so now I don't have any numbers. Is there a way I can only save my contacts and texts and transfer it to my restored phone?

If you have a backup of the phone with the messages on there, you can restore to that backup. Understand however, that anything done on the device since that backup will be lost.

It is a hard one.. laptops with small drives are a pain.
What you need is a home media server.
Some people use a PC running itunes for cost.. but that is nothing like as good as using a Mac mini.. they make great little HTPC device.. you can plug in large hard disks and store all your files and media. And share it with the network.. Read up apple's instructions on home sharing.
    https://www.apple.com/au/support/homesharing/
For cost you can buy a mini from 2011 or 2012.. I would not recommend earlier ones.. the advantage of 2012 is they have USB3 ports. But you will pay more for them.. new mini is not as useful.. they have soldered in memory and you cannot upgrade.. the old mini was the most easily modified mac in the whole range. Uses little power and can be bought for a $300US for a good one second hand.. maybe less.
