Is it advisable to download platform updates over wireless macbook pro ret?
Will be downloading update on my brand new....(but, made in mid 2012)....MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display with 10.8.2 version Mountain Lion.
Will be only downloading up to 10.8.5....as the new Maverick is conflicting currently with the new ProTools 11 ,which I need to upload from a DVD...after updating the MacBook Pro..platform. (That's the very reason I had to seek out a store with existing MacBooks still available for purchase...because I can't wait for Avid to catch up..I'm finishing a music project partially at home.)
Read somehwhere here that downloading with a WIRELESS CONNECTION will potentially have its problems. Input on this situation is appreciated at your earliest convenience. And if most of you feel there will be downloading conflicts with "wireless", then do you maybe suggest I hook up to DSL ethernet temorarily for the download and then simply go back to wireless connection ?
Also...don't want to cough up $300.00 for Apple's "Time Machine"...external hard drive to back up my system before downloading 10.8.5, WHAT TRUSTED ALTERNATIVE TO THE "Time Machine" they sell is liked and doable for this system backup before updating ?

Everything I own at home connects wirelessly - MBP, Windows desktop, printers, scanners, TV, etc, etc. I have no ethernet wired devices at all. I have a good quality simultaneous dual band 802.11b/g/n wifi router that has yet to give me problems (Netgear WNDR4500 connected to an AT&T Uverse fibre gateway).
I backup over wifi, I update over wifi - I do everything over wifi and have not had any issues updating over wifi from OS X 10.4->10.5->10.6->10.7->10.8->10.9 (with various machines too, mainly a Powerbook G4 and a late-2008 unibody MBP). So I would say not to worry. Depends on just how reliable your network has been for you of course.
As to your last part, I use a WD MyBook 1TB USB2 drive for my Time Machine backup (it is done wirelessly as the MyBook hangs off the Netgear router). I also use a SeaGate firewire 800 bus-powered drive and a WD passbook USB2 bus-powered portable hard drive for bootable clones. You can use any hard drive you like for a TM backup or clone.

My husband just brought home his new MacBook Pro, and is trying to set it up. It is taking 3 hours to download a software update over our broadband connection. Is this normal?
That is your wireless connection speed not the broadband speed. It is tough to see the broadband speed with out doing a speed test at Speedtest.com or going to broadband reports . com and using their tools page and the speed test.
Once the update downloads finish do some speed test to get a reference on how fast or slow your broadband connection is.
If you have more then one computer do the tests on both to see if the new mac has the same speed as your other computer. You can also do them on your phone with a mobile speed test through your wifi connection to your broadband. -
I'm trying to download an automatic update from ITunes but when I click on "Update" it comes up with the message, "You have updates available for other accounts" an tells me to sign in to my husband's account, even though the MacBook is registered in my name and I have my own ITunes account. My husband has his own MacBook and ITunes acct. How do I fix?

Just downloaded an update on my macbook and now the screen is black
just downloaded an update on my macbook pro through the app store (March 20, 2015) and now I cant get into my computer. It will start and turn off but the screen is black. It flashes a white screen briefly and I can see a download bar but I cannot control anything because then the screen goes black. I have tried several suggestions to fix this that I have found online, but it doesn't work. My mac has the most current operating system.

Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list. Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

I downloaded the latest update on my MacBook Pro last week. Now I keep getting a pop-up that iCloud wants my password from an email login I haven't had in a year. I can't find where to delete that email login. iCloud is also showing my new email login, plus a bogus one I accidentally created trying to fix this problem. Now the calendar on my MacBook Pro won't sync with my iPhone5.
It sounds like you have the Find my iphone Activation lock for sure. Go to www.icloud.com/find and see if you put in that Apple ID that is coming up and yoru password to see if you are able to sign into the account that way to turn it off. If you are unable to, you will have to contact AppleCare by phone (chat cannot handle account lock outs or forgotten password due to not being able to verify your identity) and see if they can reset it. And are you sure the Apple ID that is coming up yours?

Every time I download a file to my macbook pro, it saves it to downloads but changes the name and inserts % sign. Please advise how to correct the name that it is saved under.

A common hangup for updates is corrupted file permissions.
Using Disk Utility, perform a Repair Disk Permissions on your main drive, then re-attempt the update. -
Safari is not connecting to internet on my iPad. Says "could not open the page becuase the server stopped responding." Everything else that updates over wireless connection is working fine. Get same response on any site I try to visit. Need Help!

My computer had been wanting to do a software update, with what I believe was the Mavericks Software, for a few weeks but I had been putting it off. When I finally decided to install the update onto my Macbook Pro 15" today, my screen went completely black and I haven't been able to get it back since. The computer still turns on, I can tell because my caps lock key still glows when I press it and my volume buttons still make sounds when I press them. However, I cannot see anything on the screen. I don't even get the grey start up screen when I reset my computer. I have tried the SafeMode Restart where you hold Shift while it is restarting and the Display Reset in which you hold Command + Option (alt) + R + P until you hear the start up noise twice, and neither have worked. Any other advice on what I can do to get my screen back without having to send my computer away to be fixed?

Well, if your MacBook Pro is new, it already has Mavericks installed and there is nothing to update.
Go to the Menu Bar, and click the Apple logo. Then click "About This Mac." Does it show OS X 10.9 or 10.9.1?

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.

☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.

If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.
