Is it all over for my iBook?

Hi,
Last night, while trying to get my mail, my iBook stopped responding and, when I tried to reboot, it never made it to the log in screen. So I booted from the install cd and ran the disk utility. It told me that my hard disk was failing but not completly kaput, and that I should back up as much as possible.
I tried finding things in terminal, thinking if the hard disk hadn't failed completely, I could copy by hand some of the more important files I wanted. But terminal didn't see the hard disc. On the off chance, I went back to Disk Utility. This time it allowed me to start disk repair. And I got the following messages:
Keys out of order
Rebuilding Catalog B-tree
The volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS volume checked
1 Volume could not be repaired because of an error
Repair attempted on 1 volume
1 volumne could not be repaired
So, is it all over for this iBook or is there anything further I can do.
And just to be cranky, aren't those some of the most useless error messages you've ever seen.

Do you still have an Apple warranty or AppleCare? It
might be covered under it I'm not sur
Unfortunately, my warranty just ran out and I don't have AppleCare.
PS If you ever decide to I can show you some websites
that guide you through installing your own hard
drive. That would void any warranty if you did it
yourself.
I'd like a look at those web sites. It's easy enough to replace a hard drive in a PC but I don't know if I'm up for doing it in a laptop.
Approximately how much would a 30GB iBook hard drive cost?

I have Final Cut Studio V1 - the PPC/Intel V5/5.1 cross-grade version, which would suit your requirements perfectly. (I have it for sale at present down here).
If you keep looking, you're sure to find a similar second hand copy in your area, without the need to upgrade your graphics card.
I'd go for Final Cut Pro as above over any version of Express. FCP has the full version of LiveType - not the truncated version that was released later on.

Window > and select Libraries By default it should appear in the tabbed panels above the layers panel with adjustments and styles

Unable to sync contacts and calendar to my Blackberry since installing Maverick (worked before). Hunted all over for iSync and it can't be found?

Ok so what have you done with iSync in Maverick?
I have a Blackberry Curve 9320 and until I "upgraded" to maverick I was able to sync my calendar and contacts using Blackberry desktop. Now I see the error sync service disabled. Looking on your help there doesn't seem to be anything that tells me how to enable sync ..
However, hunting around I can find sync services but am unable to do anything with them - i.e. no preferences, etc.
I've looked at your "Advanced" help and the help refers to earlier versions of OSX.

i used Q10 for a month with my icloud account for calendar and contact.. after few days of "honeymoon", the sync suddenly failed! and no more cal sync, and even the contact is.... sigh.... totally messly!

Yes! i agree with you! the keyboard is great!!! some of the new features are wonderful.... but those basic function.... hahaha!! no more!

I've been looking high and low for my Lion disk. But now I'm deducing from posts I'm seeing that maybe I never got one. Am I right?

If you have the "Install Mountain Lion.app", you can just right click it, "Show package contents", and find a file called "InstallESD.dmg".
Burn that to a disc and there you go!

There should be no need to zero the hard drive.
Using the Restore discs that came with the iBook when it was new, restore the system software using the appropriate instructions which you can find through a link contained in this Apple Knowledge Base article:

Thank you Alan and know you are right. I really can do all I need with my netbook and ereader and do not need the ipad. I think I just wanted something new and felt I may enjoy using it a lttle more than the netook. But it would be a waste just to buy one when I donlt acutally need it And, donl't think it is worth the extra money for me the get the 4g wireless capability since I doubt I would really need it often.
I may treat myself to the Ipad for the color, touchpad and fun to use but it is very expensive considering how little it will do for me no more than the things I want it for. It woudl be and expensive luxuray, I can do without. I actually need t learn how to use more of the function avaiable first. Maybe I should take up playing games and learning to take digital pictures so I can at least load them. If I could learn to do that and take a decent picture, I could start selling back all the "stuff" I have purchased on ebay. haha - I do have a nice doll collection, I would like to sell. I just do not have room for anything else. That was the primary purpose for the Kindle Ereader I bought and enjoy so much,
But, I will hold onto the thought for a while and see how it goes and what other comments I get, If I think I cannot live without it, then I will have to rethink which one to buy, I coud get the 32 g if I did not have to pay for the 4g wireless. And, if I knew I could get help to teach me how to use and enjoy all the functions, I would give it more serious consideration. My granddaugther got one for Christmas and that was what got me interested in it. I love the size of the screen and it had good color and was fast. She even had an application where she could write her notes and it would convert into typed words. That was a neat feature, If you could print it?

You can change the linked email/sign in email for your iCloud and Apple ID accounts from 1 site,

You buy one download and one download only, it is your responsibility to backup your music.
it has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer. Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup ( not good), then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod: File>Transfer Purchases

Welcome to the Apple Community.
If you use the Apple TV for something else or turn it off it will erase whatever is on it's drive. If you are going to download content for later viewing you might consider doing it on the computer, downloads don't disappear until they expire and you can watch them as many times as you want.

HT1926 I was prompted to install iTunes 11.1.4 this morning. It failed (first time EVER) with the comment that 'msvcr80.dll' was not available. Upon searching for that .dll in my computer, I found it to be all over the place! Thoughts?

I've NEVER had a version update fail. I did go to 'Tools' and download for a manual install of this update as the info screen suggested. It, too, failed. After searching for the 'missing' msvcr80.dll on my computer, I found it all over the place!
Ran a malware & virus scan with nothing evil popping up.
Tried going back to a restore point before a previous update and doing the install. It failed.
OS: Vista Home Premium x64, SP2 (and current with all MS updates)
Now I'm pretty nervous re: syncing with ANYTHING-especially my iPod that has all my music I teach from at work.
