Is it alright to erase now?

I have just installed a 40gb WD and did a OS X10.4 upgrade from 10.3.9 . When install was complete, I was asked if I wanted my old system transfered to my new drive. I answered yes and all is working fine.
Would it cause any problems if I erase my old disk and reformat? It being the 15gb Maxtor
Thanks

It should be, but I wouldn't. I'd keep it as a backup until you're satisfied the new installation doesn't have any problems. Afterwards, I'd erase it and use something like Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper!, etc. to make a bootable clone of the new system on it. That gives you a backup of what you have on the new system in case something gets screwed up. Not having a backup is similar to not checking the oil, coolant level, or tire pressure on your car.

  • HT1766 iphone recovery wasn't successful due to low disc space. should i erase now?

upgraded iphone 4 to iOS7.   Phone is now disabled as it was asking for a code and neither my granddaughter nor I knew what it was (I believe it should have been 1234).   Have tried recovery but it wasn't successful due to low disc space.   Im no techno-gran and am trying to work my way through this slowly.   I don't really understand what will happen if I erase it.   Will I be able to put everything back on?

    Hello Em126
If you go to Settings > General > Usage, it will provide you with a list of what apps are using the most data on your iPhone. Then you will have a sense of where you can remove data if you need to.

  • Computer crashed new memory installed... iPod says it has to erase now

My Dell (go figure) crashed long story short I had the memory replaced in it. Now when I connect my iPod it says it's synced to another computer and i can only listen to music cant add or delete or anything. How can I get it so that the iPod and my computer recognize each other again. Also I have an external hard drive an all my music is saved to that along with the iTunes program. That is why I am so confused because the iTunes was always on the external and that is fine it was just my computer that messed up. Thanks!

is it purchased music that you have? if so you just have to authorize the computer under the store tab.

  • Contacts erased now it wont sync

for some reason all my contacts have been deleted from the phone, they are all saved on my mac but now they wont sync with the phone. any ideas?

I would be glad to look into this issue with your contacts. Did you have more than one gmail account on the device? Since you have already checked gmail online and seen your contacts, Please hard reset the incredible and reload your gmail onto the device and it will reload your contacts back on the device. You may have to redownload some applications back to your device.
    Thank you

  • Totally erased, now: use itunes to restore your ipod... ??!

Ok well, I just connected my ipod as usual to add some music. When I return to my PC after 2 hours, my ipod seems to be completly empty . I tried to connect it again, and it recognized it, ok well, no problem I think just put all your 2000 songs on it all over again. After some weird errors, the screen stays frozen on o not disconnect.
I solved it using the 2 button press thing. And now it all of the sudden sais: COnnect the ipod to your computer, use itunes to restore.
As I connect it to my computer, nothing happens. I see it as mass device (not Ipod anymore), and Itunes doesnt recognize it.
Itried using the updater and try to restore, but no, updater freezes up everytime I try.
I've tried a lot of things now, and it doesnt respond at all.. does anyone has a clue??
    thanks in advance!
    Marit

Disconnect the ipod and keep it in "DIsk Mode" for now.
In Windows, Goto control panel>add and remove and uninstall iTunes AND quicktime (You will not loose any music or playlist).
Scan the system for malware with ewido http://www.ewido.com
Now disable antivirus AND any other security programs and goto apple.com to download/install iTUnes again.
Reboot the PC, Disable your antivirus/security programs, Open the ipod updater THEN connect the ipod in disk mode to the PC and try restoring it

  • All contacts on iPhone erased, now what?

I upgraded my iPhone to the 2.0 version, and I have mobileme. When I synced everything, I lost all my contacts. How can I get them back? I think I set up everything right with the whole mobile me push thing, but am not sure. My iPhone's settings under Mail, Contacts and Calendar do not show mobile me anywhere.

I had the same problem, then restored them from the Outlook 2003 backup -
Select File, import from another program or file, personal file folder (pst), choose browse, choose the appropriate backup file to restore. Good luck!

  • Lost Ipad today and erased on find my Iphone then later i found it before it was able to erase via wifi how can I reverse the request for erasing to keep all my current content the same

Today I lost my IPad and was FREAKING OUT !!!!!   When a couple of store attendants told me to use the ICLOUD find my Iphone option in order to erase all the content just in case it fell into wrong hands.    Within an hour via survelance video we located the ipad prior to being able to connect to internet and erase everything.
Now I am keeping the power off keeping it untouched or unerased,   QUESTION TO COMMUNITY????    Is there a way for me to successfully avoid the erase process  that is due to occurr once I power up and hit the WIFI????   Appreciate any input up front,    BRfromGR

You cannot prevent it from being erased now. But surely you backup with iCloud or iTunes and/or sync with iTunes so when you get the iPad up and running again, just restore from your iCloud backup, or your iTunes backup and then sync with iTunes again and you will be OK.
If you don't backup or sync .... Well then you should probably think about doing so in the future. Out of the mouth of a Apple ......
If you erase then find your iOS device, you can restore the information on the device using iCloud Backup (if backup was turned on before you erased it) or iTunes. For more information, see iCloud storage and backup overview, or your device’s user guide in Safari bookmarks or on the Apple Support website.

  • I have upgraded from iphone 4S to 5S - now backup/restore didn't work fully

I backed up my 4S via icloud and also via itunes [belt n braces] immediately prior to moving my sim to my new 5S.
However, having done a backup on 20th May at 14:00 ish [it did confirm at the time that it had done one], I then started the restore following the prompts, but when the list of available backups was shown, it only showed the previous two - one from 5 days ago, and one older than that.
I [stupidly, as it transpires] went for the more recent one [dated 5 days ago] thinking maybe it had not updated its timestamps, and I now have my calendar / reminders etc all fine up until 5 days ago.
I have now lost 5 days worth of updates and I have checked that it has indeed missed out the last 5 days. I have done a lot of work in that time so
    what happened when the backup lied about finishing today's backup OK;
why did I only get the most recent backup showing as 5 days ago, and
how do I get the missing 5 days back?

I ended up going back to backing up the iphone 4S via itunes, then leaving that phone in the usb port.
I linked up the 5S via its usb port [why do they have to be different by the way - is this a ploy to get you to buy a new in-car charger all over again too?] and then restored the iphone 5S by selecting the backup from the 4S that I'd just done, and lo and behold! Problem solved.
It also helped that I renamed both devices to include the text '4S' and '5S' in their names, as prior to that , they were both called "...'s iphone", thus adding to the confusion over the backups and which to select.
It still doesn't solve the original problem of why I 'lost' a backup via iCloud, but I choose to ignore that as "I'm alright Jack" for now!

  • HELP! iPod Erased, Can't put files on it

My iPod got completely erased, now in itunes when I try to put music on it, it just doesn't show up on my iPod, but itunes say it is there.

And since you don't have anything on your ipod, you could try doing a 'restore'. When you installed your ipod software, an updater was installed.
After trying the standard stuff, try restoring your ipod by plugging it in and running the updater. Select the restore option. This will erase your ipod and completely restore it to the state it was when you got it. This is usually a pain in the neck because you have to resynchronize your ipod afterwards, but since your ipod is empty anyway it should be quick and painless.
DO NOT DOWNLOAD THE 1.1 UPDATER FROM APPLE'S SITE. The 1.1 updater is severly defective and will cause you and your ipod to suffer mental illness.

  • TIGER/POWERBOOK 12" G4 - erase and install problems. please help..

    Hello,
I have a powerbook g4 (the last of the powerbook 12"/ 80gb/1.5ghz to be released) with tiger installed.
I have had a a crash x 2 when doing software updates. So I managed to get it going, to then back up to an external drive - to do an erase and install.
Once I went to do the erase and install it failed, so I tried again and it seems to have done the erase. now my actual HD isn't visible as the select detination to install?
So, I can't actually even attempt to install with no destination.
any help would be most appreciated.
    thankyou

Unfortunately, it seems as if your HDD has failed. Try booting from the install disk, the go to the Utilities menu and launch Disk Utility. If the HDD shows up in the sidebar, you should reformat it. (Directions below). If it does not show up, you need to replace the HDD. Post back for a list of available HDDs and vendors, step by step directions and additional tips.
If your HDD shows up follow these directions to reformat and erase:
Formatting, Partitioning Erasing a Hard Disk Drive
Warning! This procedure will destroy all data on your Hard Disk Drive. Be sure you have an up-to-date, tested backup of at least your Users folder and any third party applications you do not want to re-install before attempting this procedure.
Boot from the install CD holding down the "C" key.
    Select language
    • Go to the Utilities menu (Tiger) Installer menu (Panther & earlier) and launch Disk Utility.
    • Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
    • Select Partition tab in main panel. (You are about to create a single partition volume.)
    • Click on Options button
    • Select Apple Partition Map (PPC Macs) or GUID Partition Table (Intel Macs)
    • Click OK
    • Select number of partition in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
(Note 1: One partition is normally preferable for an internal HDD.)
    • Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
    • Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    • Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
    • Select Erase tab
    • Select the sub-volume (indented) under Manufacturer ID (usually Macintosh HD).
    • Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
    • Click Erase button
    • Quit Disk Utility.
If you are able to do the reformat and erase, you can then proceed to restore from your backup, or to install the OS from disk.
Please do post back with an update on how it goes, and with further questions or comments, if any.

  • External drives erased

  • How long to do a 7X erase

I decided to do a 7x erase thinking this was the optimum choice (wish I had started the quick erase now) but it is going on for ages, is this normal ?

Depending on the disk size.. 7days..
Simply stop it.. now.. and do a quick erase.. that is all you need.
Reboot the TC it will be fine.

  • Stopping a 7 pass erase of a Time Capsule

I'm in the middle of the 4th pass of a 7 pass erase of my Time Capsule.  To save time I'd like to stop erasing now and start using my Time Capsule.  I'm comfortable with only 3-1/2 passes.  Can I do that, or will it cause problems with my Time Capsule?

    You can do it..
I am just not sure how..
Is there a cancel button ??
In the end if you kill airport utility.. force quit and it won't stop.. simply unplug the TC.. it is a poor way but you should never have done 7 passes.
When you plug it back in again.. do a quick erase to fix up anything that goes wrong.. it will be fine.

  • HT201210 I started an update on my daughter's Ipod.  An error occured.  Now it's saying I have to reset the Ipod back to factory status.  If I do this, her pictures will be lost, correct??

I started an update on my daughter's Ipod.  An error occured.  Now when connected to the computer, it states that I need to do a factory reset on it.  She has pictures on there that we are afraid we will lose if we do this.  When we turn on the Ipod all we get is a picture of the USB end of a charger with an arrow pointing to the iTunes logo (music note in a circle).  Anyway to unfreeze it, without losing all the pictures??

You need to restore the iPod. I is erased now.
    For how to restore:
    iTunes: Restoring iOS software
    To restore from backup see:
    iOS: How to back up
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If no backup you may be able to get them from the restored iPod
