Is it bad to always fully charge an iPhone 5?

I'm confused on how to charge an iPhone. I've been reading a lot of posts saying that always fully charging your iPhone 5 can shorten it's battery life span. Is that true?

No. Just use it how it best suits you.

Use iPhone Regularly
For proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery, it’s important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally. Be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).

  • Bad to leave the nano always fully charged?

Is it a bad idea to leave my nano always fully charged? The reason I ask is because I sometimes go many days without using my nano. Should I leave it charged in the dock often?

This ir really a battery question, so what you might want to do is research how to best utilize Lithium ion batteries. Or go to www.iLounge.com and download their free iPod book. Lots of helpful hints including a section on batteries.
This question isn't limited to Li-on batteries either. Concerns with any rechargable will spark a comment or an out-right debate. Ultimately it's your call on the recommendations provided.

  • ATT SAYS TO FULLY CHARGE NEW IPHONE 4 BEFORE TURNING ON

OK. but then how do you know it is fully charged?

    because AT&T says this:
step 1 - leave new iphone off and charge it fully.
to activate smoothly and quickly, keep your iphone off
turning your iphone on could cause activation problems
if you already turned your iphone on, turn it off.
step 2 - activate new iphone using itunes
Don't believe AT&T. While activating, the USB cable will be connected, so the phone will be getting power from the computer, not the phone's battery. The battery will be charging, not providing power. There is no reason to fully charge it before activation.

  • My Ipod stays Fully Charged So it will not Connect to Computer...

You would think an Ipod that is always fully charged is good! but it is not, it wont connect to the computer because it is "Fully Charged" and will never fully turn off because it is "Fully Charged". So it just sits there and goes "I am Fully Charged". I made it play videos for about 2 to 3 hours but it claimed it was still "Fully Charged". How can i get it to connect to my computer? How can i fix it so it shows me my actual battery life!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It shows this when you connect it to your computer?
Have you tried resetting the iPod while it is attached to the computer?

  • Battery died, wont hold a charge, just died.  Fully charged battery dies in approx 2 hours.  Is it battery gone bad. Or something causing battery to use excessive amount of energy.  Do you lose data if battery goes out?

Battery died, wont hold a charge.  After fully charging battery, battery loses all power in 2 hours. Is this indicative of a battery gone bad or something else?  Will I lose data if battery completely dies?

    Hi, thanks for the reply.
Yes I have done the reset-didn't work.
Yeh, the calibration was done so the phone turned off, then plugged back in to charge back to 100%!
The iphone4s was connected to the charger outlet, the second I unplugged the phone the battery percentage went from 100% to 98%.
AS we speak my phone is now on 100%, after 10 mins usage and 33 minutes standby. This just doesn't correlate with the decrease in battery life associated with every other number (e.g 99,98,97%) apart from when it is on 100%.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
Please try this sequence...note that, throughout the entire 4h15m process, your BB must remain directly connected to a known-good wall charger (not PC USB, not a cradle):
With the battery inside, connect your BB to the wall charger
Leave it alone for 2 hours, no matter what the LED or the display does
    Remove the battery
    Wait 15 minutes
    Insert the battery
Wait another 2 hours, no matter what the LED or the display does
This has been known to "kick start" some BBs.
It is also possible that your battery or BB has experienced a problem...to test, this sequence is needed:
Obtain an known good and already fully charged additional battery...use it in your BB and see what happens
Obtain access to a known good and identical BB...use your battery in it and see what happens
The results of this will indicate if it's your BB or your battery that has the problem. Note carefully please that "new" and "know good" are not necessarily the same things. While rare, a "new" battery certainly could be defective. Rather, the simplest (and least costly, btw) method to conduct this test is to find someone with an identical BB who has no issues...trade batteries and see what happens.
Good luck and let us know!

  • TS1587 MacBook Pro 13" 2010, only beebs every four seconds when I try to start up. Have tried firewire connect to my iMac, open with utilities CD, pressed all the correct combination of keys during startup. Battery is fully charged. Will not startup!

I am a long time user of Macs. 20+ years.
This is my granddaughters 13" MacBook Pro we purchased for her in 2010 for college.
I have tried everything I know including firewire connection to my iMac while holding the T key, two different utilities CDs (will not open them) and held various key combinations as recommended while start up. Computer just beebs ever four seconds.
Battery is built-in but fully charged.
    Any ideas?

    Hello,
Can you count the beeps or flashes?
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.
Note: In this case, a flash is considered to be 1/4 second or 250 ms or greater in length.

  • IPOD Video 30GB does not fully charge

My 5th Generation Video Ipod is 3 years old.
A few months ago it stopped fully charging. The unit would say it was charging whether plugged into a computer USB or docked on an IHome. However, when the unit was removed the battery would be 1/4 to 1/2 charged and immediately drop into the red zone.
I bought a new battery and replaced the old with a new thinking it was a battery problem. The problem still exists.
I went into diagnostics mode today and everything passes, except my Full SDRam test fails.
    Run: BL On
    PASS: BL Blink
    Fail: BL Off.
This unit will sync with any pc, play on the Ihome, play on the accessory device for the auto. The only thing it will not do is fully charge the battery.
Can the SDRam really be bad? If so, can the SDRam only affect the battery charging?

  • Is it okay to unplug my macbook pro before it is fully charged?

I have heard that it is terrible to unplug a PC before it is fully charged but is it also bad to unplug a mac before it is fully charged?

    Janini133
Why is it bad to drain it to 15% and less?
Its very hard on the Lithium battery.
If your out and there is no power, you can do that a few times, or rarely "sometimes",
.... but dont ever make a habit out of it or do it "often"
Expected Lithium charge cycle "LIFE" based on DEEP DISCHARGE (generally)
not specific to macbook cells but lithium cells in general
there isnt a battery expert on earth that hasnt said repeatedly that "deep discharges on Lithium batteries BAD"
While cycle count is commonly seen to be the “miles” on your Lithium Ion pack cell in your Macbook, which they are, this distinction is not a fine line at all, and it is a big misconception to “count charge cycles”
**A person who has, for example, 500 charge cycles on their battery and is recharging at say 70% remaining of a 100% charge is a whole world better and different than another person who has 500 charge cycles at say 20% remaining on a 100% charge.  DoD (depth of discharge) is infinitely more important on the wear and tear on your Macbook battery than any mere charge cycle count.  *There is no set “mile” or wear from a charge cycle in general OR in specific.
As such, contrary to popular conception, counting cycles is not conclusive whatsoever, rather the amount of deep DoD on an averaged scale of its use and charging conditions.
LiPo batteries do NOT like to be dropped down to 15% or so often,....key word being "often"
A lot of battery experts call the use of LiPo cells the "80% Rule" ....meaning use 80% of the charge or so,.. then recharge them for longer overall life.

  • Is it bad to charge my iphone over a 100% for an 1hour?

So I plugged my phone in to charge but totally forgot to check how much it was charged to  after a couple hours I look and it's 100%
Is it bad to charge your iPhone over a 100% this is my first time ever doing it and I have a iPhone 5s?

You can and should charge as often and as long as possible... deep discharges are hard on lithium batteries.  Normal mobile use will usually result in the one charge cycle/month that Apple recommends although it's OK to fully discharge and then recharge to 100% every once in a while to recalibrate the battery meter.
Also, you cannot overcharge the device, thus you can leave it plugged in as long as you like.

  • Macbook pro not fully charging

My macbook pro is less than one month old and it started not fully charging a few days ago. It was at 97% when the light turned green, and wouldn't go up any more. I always have my keyboard light off & the screen light very dim so don't tell me to lower it. I then decided to calibrate the battery and it charged 100% but I unplugged it for a little bit and it dropped to 99% and will not go up anymore. The charger light is green and it thinks it's fully charged. What is going on?!! this is new!

    Normal behaviour. See below.
