Is it bad to charge your macbook pro early 2011 over night? What is the best way to charge the pro?

Just bought my pro. I'm just curious as to how I can get the most out of my macbook.
Is it possible to overcharge the lithium battery?
What do you recommend doing?

  • A warning about your MacBook Pro (Do not let this happen to you)

If your MacBook Pro is nearing the end of its warranty do like be like me. Purchase the extended warranty!
Just before the warranty ran out on my 17" MacBook Pro in December of 2007 the NVIDEA Graphics chip set failed. (8600GT). As you will see below, this is a known issue that can affect your MacBook Pro. Since the machine was still under warranty the logic board was replaced at no cost to me. (Yay!)
Well, the new board came with a 6 month warranty. I decided (foolishly) not to purchase the extended Apple Care. Two weeks ago, it failed again. Apple claims that it ought to have failed (if it were ever going to) within 90 days. Obviously this is false since I had the first quite a while before it failed. They will not pay to fix it this time. So I am stuck with a broken machine since it would cost quite a bit out of pocket to replace the board.
Needless to say, Im very disappointed with this and have no where to turn. I should have bought the extended care even though at the time I hadn't researched enough to realize they are aware of these issues of the NVIDEA 8600 mobile sets randomly failing. I've been a loyal Apple customer all my life, owning many many different models since my first 512K "fat mac" in 1985.
So, be aware. If you own a MacBook Pro at any given time in its life the graphic chip set might fail you and if you are not covered under the extended care (even if the warranty ended a short month and half before it died) you will not get your board replaced.

NVIDIA takes rare loss on faulty chips, competition
Graphics chip builder NVIDIA has reported its first quarterly loss in almost five years, writes the Wall Street Journal. The company has taken a net loss of $120.9 million for its second financial quarter, admitting that materials used to package its mobile graphics chips caused unusually high failure rates. Third-party observers have suggested that the company's desktop processors could be affected as well, but this allegation has not been confirmed.
Chip failures could be responsible for an error with Apple's MacBook Pro, in which the display goes black but every other component keeps running.

Sorry Dave, have to chime in here as you're very wrong, and BermudaSeal has gone through a lot here and doesn't need to be fed false information, however good the intention.
When the Nvidia cards go wrong, what happens is exactly what BermudaSeal is experiencing, they get reported by the OS as an intel X3100 - which is the core card that forms part of the SR chipset, and coincidentally the graphics card in the MB. Basically the hardware is reporting no external graphics card (the nvidia card), and so assumes that the default one is present. It's a bit like PC motherboads that have built in GPU's, which can be bypased by adding in your own third party part. In this case , the third party part has failed, and unfortunately there is no built in GPU either - hence, black screen.
This is a classic case of a failed NVidia chip, and, depending on the country where Bermuda Seal lives, he/she should be able to get this sorted very swiftly by Apple, as it is a known defect with the hardware that can be proven - BermudaSeal should not have to foot the bill for this - keep trying and refer Apple to the multiple posts on this forum where folks out of warranty have got the issue fixed.
That plus the fact that Bermuda Seal clearly described his machine in the first post - haven't seen many 17" Macbooks around, have you?
    Good Luck!

  • How long is the Battery your Macbook Pro 15 Inch (2011)

I might get a Macbook Pro 15 Inch 2011 with the 256GB SSD and the High Resolution Screen!
How much Battery Life would I get?
    1) Going on the Internet
    2) Running Skype
    3) Playing Flight Simulator
    4) Running Word
OR just list how long your battery is on your Macbook Pro!
    Thanks!!!
(Will the higher resolution display affect my battery life)?

I was saying all of those combined on the newest MBP
if you're just worried about word, depending on the version, it might not even run on the computer.
And surprising as it may be, web browsing, depending on how you browse and what plug-ins you have installed, can be a very intensive task that takes up CPU and memory.
I found a very good discussion specifically about your issue but the site is riddled with ads so just google "MBP battery life 2011" without the quotes for further information. (it's very vast)
Long story short, bring your power brick with you if you take your computer out. There are also extra battery options that are said to help you charge your computer however, the magsafe power adapter is Apple propietary hardware that no one is able to make unless it's an Apple branded product so these batteries usually have a three prong plug (depending on where you're from) to pluginto with your power brick.

  • Photoshop is lagging really badly in my 13in Macbook Pro.

Photoshop is lagging really badly in my 13in Macbook Pro. Simple operations like selecting a tool, or just any click take up to 5min to complete. I looked in the force quit menu and it tells me that the program is not responding. I tried re-starting my laptop, even uninstalling the program. When I installed it again the problem got worse as when it loads the rainbow wheel shows up, not letting me do anything. Currently I'm on the trial version. Maybe the problem will fix itself if I buy a plan?

Not really. You have to look at things.
System requirements | Photoshop to start with. See how your Macbook measures up
Verify your disk and Repair Permissions with disk utility.
Be sure you are updated to 2014.2.2
Then see if there are bad fonts or third party plugins.

  • How is the best way of keeping your macbook pro battery healthy

what is the best way of keeping your macbook pro battery healthy there are so many ways what is the best way?

    Read these two Apppe articles:
    http://http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1446
I generally keep my MBP connected to AC as much as possible and try to make certain that at least monthly I run it on the battery to about the 40% charge level.
    Ciao.

  • Temperature of your macbook pro

    hi guys,
can I know what's your normal and highest temperature of your macbook pro
the late 07 15'' macbook pro, the one right before the unibodies.
    ??

The highest temp I've seen is just under 180F when trying the "Prey" demo. Usually stays around 120-140F in normal usage (browsing, spreadsheets, etc). It will hit around 155 when watching TV show episodes via the internet. Watching video podcasts in Front Row will seldo runthe temps ove the "normal" range.
I'm very conscious of the heat and take care to never block the bottom of the case or the exhaust vent at the display hinge on the rear edge. Some people use these computers on pillows, blankets, or in their lap and loose the beneficial effects that the case bottom affords, It's designed as a big heat sink--let the air get to it. I also do not run the MBP with the lid closed when it's attached to an external monitor. A lot of heat can escape through the keyboard.
If you are not blocking the case bottom or vents and are still getting overheating, it's time to check Activity Monitor (AM) to see if you have any runaway processes. If you've not run AM before, you need to change the "show" option form its default of "User Processes" to "All Processes." Click the "%CPU" column to sort by processor usage. With no user applications running, the top percent reading should be under 5-10.
The "Prey demo caused excessive writing to system.log and that ran my temps up, even after closing the program. Something bad going on there. I removed the demo completely, cleared system.log and all was sweet again.

  • I bought 2 new memory card to 4 grams each - replace them in your MacBook Pro 13-inch but it will not turn on - If you are installing a card for 2 and one for 4 d all works - tell me what could be the problem

I assume that you have installed new RAM in your MBP.
It would be helpful if you indicated the EXACT model/year MBP that you have.
What the the RAM specifications that you are trying to install?
    Ciao.

  • How long is to long to keep your macbook pro on?

I'm downloading a movie and it's gonna take a while and I am wondering what the maximum time is for keeping your macbook pro on for.

As long as you need it on.  I never shut mine down, I keep it active all day, and I just put it to sleep everynight.  That allows Apple to make updates to your mac.

  • HT3232 How do you attach your MacBook Pro to your television (sound too)

    Hi
How do I attach my MacBook Pro to my television so I can watch movies from Lovefilm, so I will need sound?
    What attachments do I need?
    Thanks

What model/year is your Macbook Pro? What inputs does your TV have?

  • Is it better to sleep your macbook pro 13, or just close it?

Is it better to put your macbook pro to sleep or just closing the lid?... if you are just leaving for like a 5 minute.
    Thanks

If the computer is going to be stationary, leave it on power and sleep it.
If the computer is going to be moved and not awakened in a few hours, then don't sleep it, shut it down instead.
Let the battery drain to 20% a minimal one of a time a month.

  • What brand HD is in your Macbook Pro?

What brand of hard drive is in your MacBook Pro, what speed, and what capacity?
    Thanks!

seems like the 7200 uses about 25% more power during
    disk usage.
Because the 7200 spins faster it doesn't have to spin as long as a 5400 to xfer the same data. It all evens out as far as actual power usage. The 7200 xfers 228MB more data per minute over the 5400. While the 5400 drive is still chugging along with a 400 MB file the 7200 has been long finished.
Here is another benchmark test for anyone interested: http://www.barefeats.com/hard61.html

  • Is it better to leave your macbook pro in sleep mode during the night or have it shutdown all night?

Is it better to leave your macbook pro in sleep mode during the night or have it shutdown all night?

During sleep, your MacBook consumes a little part of the battery, so it won't harm leaving it in sleep mode. Also, you will be able to start using it quickly, as you don't need to wait until Mac OS X turns on.
I only recommend you to turn off the MacBook if you are not going to use it for days in order to save battery, but apart from that, you don't need to turn it off

  • What RAID Setup do you use for your Macbook Pro Scratch Drive?

Is there any benefit to using an Express-ESata Raid Enclosure vs a single esata drive as the scratch drive?
If so, is there any benefit to using a 4 drive Raid 0 vs a 2 drive raid 0?
What Raid setups are any of you all using with your MacBook Pro's? Is there a significant performance difference between using a E-Sata drive and a FW800 drive. Is RAID the right way to go?
Sorry I'm not making a lot of sense right now, but I've searched through 20 or so pages of the forum and didn't see that anyone had addressed this question yet.

OK, just to give you a frame of reference, I just performed the following tests -
I hooked up my Sony AVCHD camera to my Mac Book Pro 2.4 ghz with 4 GB ram - (pretty close configuration to yours) - and imported a 26 second clip into FCP 7 with the following drive configurations:
Capture to internal Mac Drive, no externals: 26 Second clip takes 44 seconds
Capture to external WD USB2 drive: 26 Second clip takes 44 Seconds
Capture to external CalDigit 2 Sata Drive Array, Raid 0, via Firewire 800: 26 Second clip takes 42 seconds
OK, so now I move the camera over to my Mac Pro 8-Core, 2 x 3.2 Ghz Quad Core Xeon with 14 gigs of ram, and capture *to the same external CalDigit 2 Sata Drive Array,* Raid 0, via Firewire 800: 26 Second clip takes 11 seconds
My conclusion would be the drives and drive throughput is not as consequential as the CPU horsepower in doing the conversion from AVCHD to Pro Res. However, there are many very knowledgeable people who look at these threads, and I would be interested to hear what they have to say.
    Hope this helps.
